Abstract:In this paper the calibrations of different soft X-ray detector elements used experiment diagnostics of ICF in Beijing Synchrotron Radiation Facility-3W1B beam is reported. SR used special operation type with beam current 35-110mA, the storage ring electron energy 2GeV, photon energy region 50-1500eV. First, property of light source was studied by transmission grating-face array CCD system. We have divided 50-1500eV energy region in seven energy section through different material prefilter with monochromaticity better 95%. The AXUV-100 photodiode produced by IRD of America as secondary standard monitored light source intensity. The successive adjust monochromatic light was contained through reflectometer target chamber and relative adjust facility. The,sensitivity of XRD(Au,Al), the reflectivity of planar mirror and multi-layer mirror, the transmissivity of different material filter, the diffraction efficiency of transmission grating, the energy response curve of soft,X-ray film, the quantum efficiency of face array CCD and the still property of soft X-ray streake camera et al. were calibrated. Finally, the experiment data treatment in Shenguang- II were used by many calibration resuite, which secure data treatment accuracy.

Abstract:In this paper the calibrations of different soft X-ray detector elements used in experiment diagnostics of Inertial Confinement Fusion (ICF) with Synchrotron Radiation is reported. Abstract:Calibration of the energy response for the soft X-ray detection elements using in the ICF diagnostic are reported.The Beijing synchrotron Radiation Facility (3B1 beam line,photon energy～250—1000eV,radiation flux ～1012photon/s·mm2·mr2·0.1% band-width,beam current ～20—80mA) and target chamber of the reflectometer are used.The source intensity is monitored by AXUV-100 photodiode.The calibration of the energy response for the XRD,filter light film,Ⅱa type diamond photoconductive detector,transmission grating and soft X-ray film are given and analysed.

Abstract:In this report, a brief description of the current progress at the Shanghai EBIT project is presented. This is followed by a short discussion of the measurement of various parameters (electron beam diameter and ion density) under a number of operational conditions. A brief introduction to di-electronic recombination measurements for highly ionized xenon is given. Next, we present a preliminary measurement of the time dependence of xenon X-ray emission lines. Finally, a comparison of calculated and experimental charge-state distributions is given. This shows the influence of multi-electron capture and different distributions of the ion cloud on the charge state distribution.

Abstract:In this report we will focus on spectrometer development, spectroscopic studies and a few other recent developments at the Shanghai Electron Beam Ion Trap, EBIT laboratory. Currently the Shanghai EBIT has three spectrometers covering totally the wavelength region of I to 10000 A. Two of these instruments are home made. A flat crystal spectrometer covers the wavelength range of around 1 - 20 angstrom while a flat field instrument covers the range of around 20 - 400 angstrom. The 3rd instrument is a commercial McPherson 225 normal incidence spectrometer. All spectrometers employ CCD cameras for photon detection. The Shanghai EBIT is also equipped with high purity Germanium detectors for, amongst other things, dielectronic recombination studies and time evolution studies of ion distributions. To back up these experimental studies computer codes have been developed for calculation of charge state balances etc. Parallel to the experimental program we have also developed experience at running a number of atomic structure codes (MCHF, MCDF, FAC) for various systems, e.g. the M3 decay of the 3d(9)4S D-3(3) for Ni-like ions.

Abstract:EBIT (Electron Beam Ion Trap) is an excellent instrument both as light source and ion source, and is widely used in atomic physics research. In principle EBITs can produce ions of any charge state and of any element. In this report, a general introduction to the Shangai EBIT and short discussions of the spectroscopy platform are presented. Due to the repetitious running of the Shanghai EBIT over the past 5 years, it became necessary for the Shanghai EBIT to be disassembled for some maintenances and further modifications/improvements. The new design contains two major improvements. Furthermore, some experimental results on studies of dielectronic recombination processes for highly charged Xe ions will be discussed.

Abstract:X-ray spectroscopy is an important method in exploring the material composition and elemental properties. Traditional spectrometers in X-ray spectroscopy include wavelength-dispersive type and semiconductors-based energy-dispersive type. The former possesses high energy resolution but low collecting efficiency and narrow spectral band coverage, while the latter is more efficient and wider in spectral range but give relatively low energy resolution. Spectrometers based on microcalorimeters serve as a new class of energy-dispersive type spectrometers which balance the performance in energy resolution, detection efficiency, and spectral coverage, making them promising in many spectroscopy applications. The superconducting transition-edge sensor (TES) is a representative class of maturely developed microcalorimeters success in array fabrication and readout. We are developing TESs-based X-ray spectrometer at ShanghaiTech University aiming at the application in advanced X-ray light source, like synchrotron radiation or free electron laser facilities. Recently, a prototype has been set up and started running in the lab. This paper introduces a systematic work on data processing with this prototype, focusing on both data acquisition and analysis. With optimization on both hardware and analysis, we have achieved resolution better than 7 eV in the range from 2 keV to 9 keV on the prototype.

Abstract:In this paper, a brief description of the progress of the Shanghai permanent magnetic electron beam ion trap is presented. Some test results regarding the electron beam current versus beam energy are presented. The electron beam width was measured and compared with our simulations, and good agreement was found.

Abstract:A high-temperature superconducting electron-beam ion trap (EBIT) has been set up at the Shanghai EBIT Laboratory for spectroscopic studies of low-charge-state ions. In the study reported here, beam trajectory simulations are implemented in order to provide guidance for the operation of this EBIT under ultralow-energy conditions, which has been successfully achieved with a full-transmission electron-beam current of 1–8.7 mA at a nominal electron energy of 30–120 eV. The space-charge effect is studied through both simulations and experiments. A modified iterative formula is proposed to estimate the space-charge potential of the electrons and shows very good agreement with the simulation results. In addition, space-charge compensation by trapped ions is found in extreme ultraviolet spectroscopic measurements of carbon ions and is studied through simulation of ion behavior in the EBIT. Based on the simulation results, the ion-cloud radius, ion density, and electron–ion overlap are obtained.

Abstract:In this report, plasma diagnostic-related activities at the newly developed Shanghai electron-beam ion trap (EBIT) are reviewed. The density of the electron beam was measured by employing a slit imaging system, and the ion densities of bare and H-like Kr were studied using radiative recombination emissions of n = 1 processes. A first intrashell (KLL) dielectronic recombination resonant spectrum of xenon is also shown and discussed. Finally, ion density oscillations from possibly different mechanisms than those seen earlier at the Berlin EBIT are observed and discussed.

Abstract:Energy resolution is an important figure of merit for TES microcalorimeter. We propose a laser system to measure the energy resolution of TES microcalorimeter with a 1550 nm laser source. Compared to method that characterizes the performance by irradiating the detector using X-ray photons from a radioactive source placed inside the refrigerator, our system is safer and more convenient. The feasibility of this system has been demonstrated in the measurement of an Al/Ti bilayer TES microcalorimeter. In this experiment, the tested detector showed a energy resolution of 72 eV in the energy range from 0.2 keV to 0.9 keV

Abstract:Over the last few years the Shanghai electron beam ion trap (EBIT) has been successfully redesigned and rebuilt. The original machine, developed under collaboration with the Shanghai Institute of Applied Physics, first produced an electron beam in 2005. It could be tuned with electron energies between 1 and 130 keV and beam current up to 160 mA. After several years of operation, it was found that several modifications for improvements were necessary to reach the goals of better electron optics, higher photon detection, and ion injection efficiencies, and more economical running costs. The upgraded Shanghai-EBIT is made almost entirely from Ti instead of stainless steel and achieves a vacuum of less than 10(-10) Torr, which helps to minimize the loss of highly changed ions through charge exchange. Meanwhile, a more compact structure and efficient cryogenic system, and excellent optical alignment have been of satisfactory. The magnetic field in the central trap region can reach up till 4.8 T with a uniformity of 2.77 × 10(-4). So far the upgraded Shanghai-EBIT has been operated up to an electron energy of 151 keV and a beam current of up to 218 mA, although promotion to even higher energy is still in progress. Radiation from ions as highly charged as Xe(53+, 54+) has been produced and the characterization of current density is estimated from the measured electron beam width.

Abstract:In this work, a portable slit imaging system is developed to study both the electron beam diameter and the profile of the newly developed Shanghai Electron Beam Ion Trap (Shanghai EBIT). Images are detected by a charge coupled device (CCD) sensitive to both X rays and longer wavelength photons (up to visible). Large scale ray tracings were conducted for correcting the image broadening effects caused by the finite slit width and the finite width of the CCD pixels. A numerical de-convolution method was developed to analyse and reconstruct the electron beam density distribution in the EBIT. As an example of the measured beam diameter and current density, the FWHM (full width at half maximum) diameter of the electron beam at 81 keV and 120 mA is found to be 76.2 mu m and the density 2.00 x 10(3) A.cm(-2), under a magnetic field of 3 T, including all corrections.
A Very Low Energy Compact Electron Beam Ion Trap for Spectroscopic Research in Shanghai

Abstract:In this paper, a new compact low energy electron beam ion trap, SH-PermEBIT, is reported. This electron beam ion trap (EBIT) can operate in the electron energy range of 60–5000 eV, with a current density of up to 100 A/cm2. The low energy limit of this machine sets the record among the reported works so far. The magnetic field in the central drift tube region of this EBIT is around 0.5 T, produced by permanent magnets and soft iron. The design of this EBIT allows adjustment of the electron gun's axial position in the fringe field of the central magnetic field. This turned out to be very important for optimizing the magnetic field in the region of the electron gun and particularly important for low electron beam energy operation, since the magnetic field strength is not tunable with permanent magnets. In this work, transmission of the electron beam as well as the upper limit of the electron beam width under several conditions are measured. Spectral results from test operation of this EBIT at the electron energies of 60, 315, 2800, and 4100 eV are also reported.

Abstract:We describe the design and performance the calorimeter systems used in the ECCE detector to achieve the overall performance specifications cost-effectively with careful consideration of appropriate technical and schedule risks. The calorimeter systems consist of three electromagnetic calorimeters, covering the combined pseudorapidity range from −3.7 to 3.8 and two hadronic calorimeters covering a combined range of − 1 . 1 < η < 3 . 8 . Key calorimeter performances which include energy and position resolutions, reconstruction efficiency, and particle identification will be presented.

Abstract:A portable high resolution soft x-ray and extreme ultraviolet (EUV) spectrometer has been developed for spectroscopic research at the Shanghai Electron Beam Ion Trap (EBIT) laboratory. A unique way of aligning the grazing incidence spectrometer using the zero order of the grating is introduced. This method is realized by extending the range of the movement of the CCD detector to cover the zero order. The alignment can be done in a few minutes, thus leading to a portable spectrometer. The high vacuum needed to be compatible with the EBITs is reached by mounting most of the translation and rotation stages outside the chamber. Only one high vacuum compatible linear guide is mounted inside the chamber. This is to ensure the convenient interchange of the gratings needed to enable wavelength coverage of the whole range of 10 to 500 angstrom. Spectra recorded with one of our low energy EBITs shows that a resolving power of above 800 can be achieved. In the slitless configuration used in this work, we found the resolving power to be limited by the width of the EBIT plasma. When mounted on the Shanghai EBIT which is a high energy EBIT and has a narrower EBIT plasma width, the estimated resolving power will be around 1400 at 221.15 angstrom. (C) 2014 AIP Publishing LLC.

Abstract:Small thermal calorimeters operated at temperatures below 1 K can detect single photon or particle events that deposit only a few eV in the device. Their energy resolution for soft X-rays is potentially better than 1 eV FWHM, maintaining the high efficiency and large angular acceptance of a Si(Li) solid state detector with a factor of about 100 improvement in resolution. The best performance obtained so far is 7.3 eV FWHM for 6 keV X-rays with a 1/4 mm x 1 mm device operated at 60 mK. Other unique properties of microcalorimetry include sensitivity to non-ionizing events and a high tolerance for the inclusion of many source materials within the detector.We discuss fundamental factors influencing resolution, limitations of the current approach, applicability considerations, and possible routes for future improvements.
High Resolution Flat Crystal Spectrometer for the Shanghai EBIT.

Abstract:We report on a high resolution flat crystal spectrometer designed for the Shanghai EBIT. Its energy range is from 0.5 to 10 keV. Three crystals can be installed in the vacuum chamber simultaneously, and its effective Bragg angle can be covered from 15 degrees to 75 degrees . A vacuum version charge-coupled device detector is used for detection of photons. An energy resolution under 1 eV was reached in measurements of the 4.5 keV Kalpha(1) line by using an x-ray generator with a titanium anode. The spectrometer was also tested to operate well on the Shanghai EBIT by observing the lines of tungsten at around 3.2 keV.

Abstract:A modified miniature metal vapor vacuum arc ion source has been developed for the Shanghai electron beam ion trap. Several kinds of elements have been tested to extract lowly charged ions, such as Fe, Au, Ge, Mo, Ti, Al, and Cu. Besides high enough ion beam current and a short pulse width, we focus on the operation reliability, long term operation, and convenience of use.
