Abstract:Surface-initiated atom transfer radical polymerization has been performed on poly(vinylidene fluoride) electrospun nanofibers (PVDFNF) to incorporate poly(styrenesulfonic acid) (PSSA) chains tethered on PVDFNF surfaces. The obtained PSSA-g-PVDFNF nanofibers are used as reinforcement for Nafion to prepare Nafion/PSSA-g-PVDFNF composite membrane (Nafion/NF-CM). The PSSA chains tethered on the nanofiber surfaces improve the interfacial compatibility between the nanofiber reinforcement and the Nafion matrix, and might provide a proton-conducting pathway along the nanofibers. As a result, the proton conductivity of Nafion/NF-CM membrane is 2.5-fold of the value recorded with the nanofiber-free recasting Nafion membrane. The H2/O2 single cell employing Nafion/NF-CM membrane shows a maximum power density of 770mWcm−2 which is 1.5-fold of the value recorded with the commercial Nafion 212 membrane and a current density at 0.6V of 940mAcm−2 which is about 2.7-fold of the value recorded with Nafion 212. The Nafion/NF-CM membrane is also suitable for direct methanol fuel cell, in which it could be operated at a 5M methanol solution to show a cell performance of 91.2mWcm−2 for maximum power density and 464mAcm−2 for current density at 0.2V, which are about 1.5-fold of the values recorded with the commercial Nafion 117 membrane at 2M methanol solution.
Proton-conductive aromatic membranes reinforced with poly(vinylidene fluoride) nanofibers for high-performance durable fuel cells

Abstract:Durability and ion conductivity are counteracting properties of proton-conductive membranes that are challenging to achieve simultaneously and determine the lifetime and performance of proton exchange membrane fuel cells. Here, we developed aromatic ionomers reinforced with nonwoven poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) nanofibers. Because of the right combination of an isotropic nonwoven PVDF with high porosity (78%) and partially fluorinated aromatic ionomers (SPP-TFP-4.0), the resulting composite membrane (SPP-TFP-4.0-PVDF) outperformed state-of-the-art chemically stabilized and physically reinforced perfluorinated Nafion XL membrane, in terms of fuel cell operation and in situ chemical stability at a high temperature (120°C) and low relative humidity (30%). The SPP-TFP-4.0-PVDF membrane exhibited excellent chemical stability and stable rupture energy at high and low RH levels, allowing it to be an alternative proton-conductive membrane to meet the U.S. Department of Energy target to be used in automobile fuel cells in 2025.

Abstract:Nafion-functionalized multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT-Nafion) are prepared through an ozone-mediated process. The chemical structure of MWCNT-Nafion is characterized by Raman spectroscopy, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Nafion chains covering on the outer surfaces of MWCNTs in MWCNT-Nafion is observed in high-resolution transmission electron micrographs. The Nafion fraction of MWCNT-Nafion is about 12 wt%. MWCNT-Nafion is effective to prepare Nafion/MWCNT-Nafion composite membranes for proton exchange membrane fuel cells. Compared to the pristine Nafion membrane, the composite membrane with a MWCNT-Nafion loading of 0.05 wt% (N/MN-0.05) exhibits an 1.5-fold increase of mechanical strength and a five-fold increase of proton conductivity. In single cell tests, the current density at 0.6 V and the maximum power density measured with the N/MN-0.05 composite membrane are 1556 mA cm−2 and 650 mW cm−2, respectively. Both of the values are 1.5-times the values measured with a pristine Nafion membrane.

Abstract:In order to obtain a dual-functional nanofiber framework that could simultaneously serve as an ultra-strong reinforcing substrate and a fast ion transport medium, herein, silica coated poly(vinylidene fluoride) (SiO2@PVDF) electrospun nanofiber mat was firstly prepared using a universal polydopamine-assisted sol-gel method. After grafting with dense quaternary ammonium groups, quaternized SiO2@PVDF (QSiO(2)@PVDF) was yield. This mat with densely cationized surface can not only provide a reliable mechanical support for superhydrophilic quaternized chitosan (QCS), but also significantly improve the ionic conductivity of the whole system. The resulting QCS impregnated membrane exhibits satisfactory wet strength of as high as 11.9 MPa while pure QCS is hardly self-supporting. Moreover, the surface high-concentration cationic groups can establish channel-like ion transport pathways with the aid of 1D continuous nanofibers, thus obtaining high ionic conductivity of 0.041 S cm(-1) (80 degrees C), which is about 1.3 times higher than that of pure QCS. The single alkaline fuel cell using this membrane demonstrates a maximum power density of 98.7 mW cm(-2). Therefore, this relatively independent design of mechanically support fiber core and high-concentration ion conduction surface provides a new methodology for fabricating high-performance anion exchange membranes.

Abstract:Nanofibrous proton exchange membranes (PEMs) play an important role in improving the performance of the fuel cells. In this paper, two kinds of Nafion nanofibrous PEMs, Nafion-E/W and Nafion-DMF, were fabricated respectively by using ethanol/water (E/W) and N, N -dimethylformamide (DMF) as the solvent and their properties, such as the morphologies, water uptake, area swelling, ion exchange capabilities, conductivities, and mechanical properties were examined. Nafion-E/W nanofibers showed a thick diameter of 6,089 nm and Nafion-DMF nanofibers a thin diameter of 410 nm. Then the two Nafion nanofibers were annealed to provide the PEMs. Compared with Nafion 117 membranes and Nafion-DMF PEMs, Nafion-E/W PEMs showed the greatest water uptake and area swelling of respectively 59.75 % and 30.31 % and the conductivity increased to 0.1405 S/cm, more than twice as much as Nafion 117 membranes, but the broken stress decreased to 5.49 MPa, nearly half of Nafion 117 membranes. Nafion-DMF PEMs showed the lowest water uptake, area swelling, and conductivity of 22.67 %, 10.75 %, and 0.0410 S/cm, and the broken stress reached 14.20 MPa, greater than 11.0 MPa of Nafion 117 membranes. The obtained experimental results are instructive to improve the properties of Nafion PEMs.

Abstract:Proton exchange membranes with high selectivity are urgently required in energy and electronic technologies. Nafion, a state-of-the-art commercial proton exchange membrane material, faces significant challenges. It suffers from the permeation of undesirable substances, like hydrogen in fuel cells and vanadium ions in redox flow batteries, due to the unmatched sizes between its ionic domains (3~5 nm) and these substances. In this work, we present a supramolecular modification strategy that simultaneously enhances the proton conductivity and selectivity of Nafion. We employ fluoroalkyl-grafted polyoxometalate (POMs) nanoclusters as supramolecular additives to modify Nafion via co-assembly. These POMs can precisely and robustly decorate at Nafion ionic domains, with their fluoroalkyl chains anchoring into the perfluorinated matrix while their inorganic clusters stay in the ionic regions. The hybrid membranes, with continuous proton hopping sites and nanoscale steric hindrance offered by POMs, exhibit a 56% increase in proton conductivity and a 100% improvement in proton/vanadium selectivity. This leads to significantly enhanced power density and energy efficiency in fuel cells and vanadium flow batteries, respectively. These results underscore the intriguing potential of molecular cluster additives in improving the functions of ion-conducting membranes.

Abstract:In this paper, the composite membranes based on poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) with different amounts of halloysite (HNT) nano-filler were prepared by phase inversion method for the application of lithium ion batteries. The effect of the content of HNT on the crystallinity and morphology of the composite membranes were investigated. The results showed that the crystallization behaviors of the HNT/PVDF composite membranes were reduced with the increase of HNT filler content. Furthermore, the introduction of HNT into PVDF matrix remarkably affected the formation rate of nuclei which could evolve into pores to change surface morphology. The HNT/PVDF composite membranes showed the sufficient porosity and good affinity between the eletrolyte as well as the electrode, which led to superb electrolyte uptake and low interfacial impedance. Among HNT/PVDF composite membranes, in particular, the 4-HNT/PVDF composite membrane with 4 wt% HNT content had a great electrolyte uptake (430.2%), superior electrochemical stability window (4.5 V), high ionic conductivity (2.4 mS/cm), and low interfacial impedance (63 Omega). The cells assembled with the 4-HNT/PVDF composite membranes obtain discharge capacities of 164.72 mAh/g (0.1C) and 134.88 mAh/g (2C), corresponding to 96.89% and 79.34% of the theoretical capacity of LiFePO4 (170 mAh/g), respectively, better cycle performance (with capacity retention 89.12% after 100 cycles) at 0.5C and excellent rate performance. It is concluded that the content of HNT deeply affects membrane performance. Therefore, the 4-HNT/PVDF composite membranes could be a good option of high performance lithium ion batteries. Property Enhancement Effects of Side-Chain-Type Naphthalene-Based Sulfonated Poly(arylene ether ketone) on Nafion Composite Membranes for Direct Methanol Fuel Cells

Abstract:Nafion/SNPAEK-x composite membranes were prepared by blending raw Nafion and synthesized side-chain-type naphthalene-based sulfonated poly(arylene ether ketone) with a sulfonation degree of 1.35 (SNPAEK-1.35). The incorporation of SNPAEK-1.35 polymer with ion exchange capacity (IEC) of 2.01 mequiv·g-1 into a Nafion matrix has the property enhancement effects, such as increasing IECs, improving proton conductivity, enhancing mechanical properties, reducing methanol crossover, and improving single cell performance of Nafion. Morphology studies show that Nafion/SNPAEK-x composite membranes exhibit a well-defined microphase separation structure depending on the contents of SNPAEK-1.35 polymer. Among them, Nafion/SNPAEK-7.5% with a bicontinuous morphology exhibits the best comprehensive properties. For example, it shows the highest proton conductivities of 0.092 S cm-1 at 25 °C and 0.163 S cm-1 at 80 °C, which are higher than those of recast Nafion with 0.073 S cm-1 at 25 °C and 0.133 S cm-1 at 80 °C, respectively. Nafion/SNPAEK-5.0% and Nafion/SNPAEK-7.5% membranes display an open circuit voltage of 0.77 V and a maximum power density of 47 mW cm-2 at 80 °C, which are much higher than those of recast Nafion of 0.63 V and 24 mW cm-2 under the same conditions. Nafion/SNPAEK-5.0% membrane also has comparable tensile strength (12.7 MPa) to recast Nafion (13.7 MPa), and higher Young's modulus (330 MPa) than that of recast Nafion (240 MPa). By combining their high proton conductivities, comparable mechanical properties, and good single cell performance, Nafion/SNPAEK-x composite membranes have the potential to be polymer electrolyte materials for direct methanol fuel cell applications.
High‐Throughput Electrospinning of Unmodified and Aminated Poly(Pentafluorostyrene) for Fiber‐Reinforced Proton Exchange Membranes

Abstract:This work presents a high throughput fabrication of modifiable poly(pentafluorostyrene) fibers as reinforcement for Nafion and SFS001 in proton exchange membranes. The mechanical properties and proton conductivities correlate with the basicity of the fiber material by interactions between amines (fiber) and sulfonic acid (matrix). These findings serve as a blueprint for the design of novel fiber materials with high throughput. This study demonstrates a high‐throughput fabrication of fiber interlayers for proton exchange membranes based on poly(pentafluorostyrene) (PPFSt) and its aminated derivatives. The fibers are produced by electrospinning, where the parameters are carefully screened. The controlled parameters are solvent composition, weight percentage, voltage, flow rate, and temperature, controlled with a self‐designed heating jacket. The parameters are iterated toward optimized fiber structure and maximum output. The yielded fibers are infiltrated with Nafion and sulfonated polymer from bisphenol AF and decafluorobiphenyl (SFS001) by spray‐coating and doctor blading to obtain the fiber‐reinforced proton exchange membranes. Tensile tests reveal a higher Young's modulus and yield stress than pure Nafion. Here, the basicity of the aminated PPFSt fibers correlates with the Young's modulus due to improved acid‐base interactions between amine groups and sulfonic acid. The acid‐base interactions influence the composite membrane's proton conductivity, varying from 23 mS cm−1 for strongly alkaline fibers to 69 mS cm−1 for non‐basic fibers. These findings can be transferred to fabricating fiber reinforcements beyond routinely used poly(benzimidazoles).

Abstract:A novel type of hybrid membrane was fabricated by incorporating sulfonated polystyrene (S-PS) electrospun fibers into Nafion for the application in proton exchange membrane fuel cells. With the introduction of S-PS fiber mats, a large amount of sulfonic acid groups in Nafion aggregated onto the interfaces between S-PS fibers and the ionomer matrix, forming continuous pathways for facile proton transport. The resultant hybrid membranes had higher proton conductivities than that of recast Nafion, and the conductivities were controlled by selectively adjusting the fiber diameters. Consequently, hybrid membranes fabricated by ionomers, such as Nafion, incorporated with ionic-conducting nanofibers established a promising strategy for the rational design of high-performance proton exchange membranes.

Abstract:Nafion/PVA nanofibers were produced by electrospinning, PVA, and Nafion used as filler material for pore closure. The effects of filler material on the morphology, stability, proton conductivity and methanol permeability were investigated. In this study, polyvinyl alcohol/Nafion nanofibrous composite membranes were produced to investigate their possible application as a polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM) in direct methanol fuel cells. Electrospinning method was used for nanofibrous membrane production, in which the mixture of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and Nafion solutions was directly electrospun. Produced nanofibers were subjected to physical stabilization, filler application, and sulfonating to produce composite nanofibrous membranes. PVA and Nafion polymers were used also as filler materials. The properties of resultant composite membranes were compared in terms of water swelling, weight loss in water and methanol solution, thermal stability, morphology, proton conductivity, and methanol permeability. Proton conductivity of the membranes depending on the humidity was also investigated. TGA analysis showed that the membranes had adequate thermal properties regardless of the filler material. The nanofibrous structure was shown to be preserved by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) after treatment with water and methanol solution. It was shown that PVA/Nafion nanofibers displayed proton conductivity after filling process. The use of PVA as a filler material led to higher proton conductivity at 100 RH%. It was reported that proton conductivity could only be obtained at higher relative humidity values (>80% RH). A lower methanol permeability of PVA‐filled membranes was reported. Highlights PVA/Nafion nanofibrous membranes were produced by electrospinning. PVA and Nafion were also used as pore filling materials. PVA‐filled membranes had higher proton conductivity and lower methanol permeability. Proton conductivity could only be obtained at higher RH% values.

Abstract:Novel electrospun inorganic-organic nanofiber reinforced anion exchange membranes were developed by incorporating imidazolium functionalized multiwalled carbon nano tubes (FMWCNTs) into imidazolium functionalized polysulfone nanofibers via co-electrospinning. Under a high-voltage electrostatic field, FMWCNT inorganic nanofibers were able to align along the axis of the electrospun nanofibers, thereby solving the problem of easy agglomeration of FMWCNTs in cast-composite anion exchange membrane, synergistic with the polymer nanofibers to reinforce the membranes. Small angle x-ray suggests that ion clusters are more likely to aggregate in a co-electrospun composite membrane, indicating continuous and lower-energy-barrier pathways for hydroxide transport. As a result, composite electrospun membranes exhibit higher OH- conductivity and better single fuel cell performance. With an additive amount of 0.4 wt.%, hydroxide conductivity reaches a maximum value of 67.5 mScm(-1) (30 degrees C). However, the maximum power density (102.5 mW cm(-2)) is much higher than that of the electrospun (2.1 times) and cast (3.3 times) membranes without FMWCNTs. Fibration of polymer and alignment of multiwalled carbon nanotube nanofibers also greatly enhance the membrane strength. For fully hydrated membranes, tensile stress dramatically increases from 5.6 MPa for a cast membrane without FMWCNTs to 24.4 MPa for an electrospun membrane with 0.4 wt.% FMWCNTs addition. The strategy for co-electrospinning of imidazolium functionalized multiwalled carbon nanotubes/polysulfone presented in this work provides a way to enhance the organic-inorganic interface compatibility, and improve ionic conductivity and mechanical strength of anion exchange membrane simultaneously. Improved performance of nafion membranes by blending ultra-high molecular weight polyvinylidene fluoride

Abstract:Abstract Proton exchange membrane (PEM) is developing towards thin thickness and high mechanical strength for extraordinary performance proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs). However, the commercial membrane such as Nafion can hardly satisfy the practical application of PEMFCs because of high gas crossover and low mechanical strength when the thickness is less than 20 μm. Here, a reinforced composite membrane (denoted as P110-PFSA) was synthesized by blending poly(vinylidene fluoride)(PVDF) featured with high molecular weight of M w = 1100000 g mol -1 into perfluorosulfonic acid resin (PFSA). The P110-PFSA with the thickness of 15 μm exhibits tensile strength of over 33 MPa because the PVDF with high molecular weight forms a higher density of hydrogen bonds with PFSA, resulting in a reinforcement of the bonding strength between PVDF and PFSA. H 2 /O 2 fuel cell performance with the P110-PFSA shows more than 1170 mW cm -2 fed with H 2 at 70 °C and 100% RH much better than that with Nafion 211. Direct methanol fuel cell power densities of the blent PEM are 92, 61, 50, 28 and 15 mW cm -2 fed with 2, 6, 10,16 and 20 M methanol solution respectively at the anode.
Zwitterion-functionalized nanofiber-based composite proton exchange membranes with superior ionic conductivity and chemical stability for direct methanol fuel cells

Abstract:Proton exchange membranes with high ionic conductivity and good chemical stability are critical for achieving high power density and long lifespan of direct methanol cells (DMFCs). Herein, a zwitterionic molecule was grafted onto the surface of polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) nanofibers to obtain functionalized PVDF porous substrate (SBMA-PDA@PVDF). Then, sulfonated poly(ether ether ketone) (SPEEK) was filled into the pores of SBMA-PDA@PVDF, and further ionic cross-linked via H2SO4 to prepare the composite membrane (SBMA-PDA@PVDF/SPEEK). The basic groups on the zwitterionic interface could not only establish ionic cross-linking with SPEEK to increase chemical stability and reduce swelling, but also serve as the adsorption sites for subsequent H2SO4 cross-linking to significantly enhance proton conductivity. Super-high proton conductivity (165.34 mS cm-1, 80 °C) was achieved for the membrane, which was 2.12 times higher than that of the pure SPEEK. Moreover, the SBMA-PDA@PVDF/SPEEK membrane exhibited remarkably improved oxidative stability of 91.6 % mass retention after soaking in Fenton's agent for 12 h, while pure SPEEK completely decomposed. Satisfactorily, the DMFC assembled with SBMA-PDA@PVDF/SPEEK exhibited a peak power density of 99.01 mW cm-2, which was twice as much as that of commercial Nafion 212 (48.88 mW cm-2). After 235 h durability test, only 11 % voltage loss was observed.
Porous Nafion nanofiber composite membrane with vertical pathways for efficient through-plane proton conduction

Abstract:Nafion has been the benchmark of proton exchange membrane for decades due to the excellent proton conduction and physicochemical properties. While the strong dependence of transfer channel continuity on humidity always causes serious conductivity drops and hampers the wide application. Herein, a combination of electrospinning and soft template (ionic liquid) methods is proposed to fabricate porous Nafion nanofiber. The resultant nanofiber mat is then impregnated with chitosan (CS) to prepare porous nanofiber composite membrane (PNFCM). This is different from traditional nanofiber composite membrane (NFCM), of which through-plane conductivity is much lower than in-plane one (i.e., strong transfer anisotropy). The abundant pores inside porous nanofibers provide numerous vertical transfer channels at interfaces between CS and pore walls. Meanwhile, the –NH/–NH2 groups on CS form acid-base pairs with –SO3H groups along pore walls. These stable vertical pathways significantly facilitate the through-plane proton conduction at both hydrated and anhydrous conditions. Particularly, PNFCM attains perpendicular conductivities of 307 mS cm−1 at 90 °C and 100% RH, and 150 mS cm−1 at 120 °C and 0% RH, which are, respectively, 3.2 and 2.7 times of that of NFCM. Consequently, the transfer anisotropy coefficient decreases and fuel cell performances enhance obviously.

Abstract:Nafion chains have been reacted onto graphene oxide (GO) through atom transfer radical addition (ATRA) reaction between the C–F groups of Nafion and the C=C groups of GO. The obtained nanohybrids of GO and Nafion (GO-Nafion) are characterized with Fourier transform Infrared spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and Raman spectroscopy to support the performance of the ATRA reaction between GO and Nafion and the chemical structure of GO-Nafion. Morphological observation on GO-Nafion with transmission electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy further demonstrates the organic-inorganic hybrid nanosheet structure of GO-Nafion. GO-Nafion has been used as a nanoadditive for fabrication of Nafion-based nanocomposite proton exchange membranes for fuel cells. Compared to the neat recast Nafion membrane, addition of GO-Nafion results in a 1.6-folds of proton conductivity to the corresponding nanocomposite PEM. The single cell tests on the nanocomposite PEM also exhibit an about 35–40% increase in the fuel cell performance.
Enhancing Proton Conductivity and Dimensional Stability of Nanofiber Proton Exchange Membranes through In Situ Growth of MOF-Modified PVDF Nanofibers

Abstract:Proton exchange membranes often encounter challenges with proton conductivity and dimensional stability under conditions of high temperature and low humidity. Incorporating proton-conductive nanofibers into the membrane fortifies its dimensional stability and establishes extra proton transfer channels at the interface between the fibers and matrix, thereby improving proton conductivity. This study utilized polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) fibers as a base material, modified with ethylenediamine to yield amine-functionalized cross-linked structures. UiO-66-NH2 and UiO-66-NH2–SO3H were then grown in situ on these fibers, and the resultant structures were integrated with Nafion to fabricate metal–organic framework (MOF)-modified nanofiber proton exchange membranes (NFPEMs). We examined the growth of MOFs and their role in enhancing the nanofiber proton exchange membrane’s properties. Both UiO-66-NH2 and UiO-66-NH2–SO3H were successfully incorporated, resulting in a maximum enhancement of proton conductivity by 149.69 and 80.38%, respectively, compared with PVDF@Nafion, and the proton conductivity of the MOF-loaded membrane reaches 152.11 ms/cm at 80 °C and 100% relative humidity. The swelling rates were also significantly reduced by up to 59.16 and 57.94%, relative to Nafion, effectively boosting dimensional stability and thermal stability. These improvements are attributed to the additional proton transfer channels formed by the MOFs, the contribution of acid–base pairs, limitations imposed by MOF porosity on water molecule mobility, and the supportive three-dimensional network conferred by PVDF. Findings from this research provide valuable guidance for the design of NFPEMs.

Hybrid Nafion Membranes of Ionic Hydrogen-Bonded Organic Framework Materials for Proton Conduction and PEMFC Applications

Abstract:As the high-power density and environmentally friendly energy resources, proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) have a promising future in portable power generation. Herein, the hybrid Nafion membranes of ionic hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks (iHOFs) for PEMFC applications are demonstrated. By adjusting the position of sulfonic groups on naphthalene disulfonic acid compounds, four iHOFs with different types of hydrogen bonds were synthesized successfully based on 1,1'-diamino-4,4'-bipyridylium and naphthalene disulfonic acid. The formation of hydrogen bond interactions between amino and sulfonate groups provides a rich hydrogen bond network, which makes such iHOFs have high conductivity, and the maximum value is 2.76 × 10-3 S·cm-1 at 100 °C and 98% RH. Besides, composite membrane materials were obtained by mixing Nafion and iHOFs, and the maximum proton conductivity values can achieve 1.13 × 10-2 S·cm-1 for 6%-iHOF-3/Nafion and 2.87 × 10-3 S·cm-1 for 6%-iHOF-4/Nafion membranes at 100 °C under 98% RH. Through the H2/O2 fuel cell performance test by using iHOF/Nafion as the solid electrolyte, the maximum power and current density values of hybrid membranes are 0.36 W·cm-2 and 1.10 A·cm-2 for 6%-iHOF-3/Nafion and 0.42 W·cm-2 and 1.20 A·cm-2 for 6%-iHOF-4/Nafion at 80 °C and 100% RH. This work provides a practicable approach for establishing high-performance proton exchange hybrid membranes by doping high proton-conducting iHOFs into the Nafion matrix.
