Abstract:Ether-bond-free polyfluorene (PBF) anion exchange membranes (AEMs) containing flexible alkyl pendent chains terminated with piperidinium cations were prepared via one-pot, superacid-catalyzed polycondensation and a subsequent quaternization reaction. Hydrophilic and hydrophobic microphase segregation was observed in all AEMs. The hydroxide conductivity of PBF2-Br reaches up to 86 mS cm–1 at 80 °C, and 1H NMR showed no measurable degradation after alkaline treatment in aqueous NaOH (1 M) solution for 1200 h at 80 °C. Besides, a peak power density of 410 mW cm–2 was achieved at 60 °C for an alkaline fuel cell using the selected PBF1-OH (OH– form) as AEM.

Abstract:Nafion is one of the most widely investigated materials applied in proton exchange membranes. Interestingly, it was found that Nafion could serve as a macroinitiator to induce atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) on its C-F sites. In this study, poly(1-vinylimidazole) was selectively bonded on the side chains of Nafion via the Nafion-initiated ATRP process, which was confirmed by the measurements of (1)H/(19)F nuclear magnetic resonance spectra, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, differential scanning calorimeter and matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization-time-of-flight/time-of-flight mass spectrometry. The as-prepared Nafion-co-poly(1-vinylimidazole) (Nafion-PVIm) membranes, with tunable loading amount of imidazole rings, presented greatly enhanced proton conductivity and methanol resistivity due to their well-controlled chemical structures. Especially, chemically bonding PVIm with Nafion chains endowed the Nafion-PVIm membranes with high stability in proton conductivity. For the first time, we revealed the great potentials of the Nafion-initiated ATRP process in developing high-performance proton exchange membranes.

Abstract:Proton exchange membranes with high selectivity are urgently required in energy and electronic technologies. Nafion, a state-of-the-art commercial proton exchange membrane material, faces significant challenges. It suffers from the permeation of undesirable substances, like hydrogen in fuel cells and vanadium ions in redox flow batteries, due to the unmatched sizes between its ionic domains (3~5 nm) and these substances. In this work, we present a supramolecular modification strategy that simultaneously enhances the proton conductivity and selectivity of Nafion. We employ fluoroalkyl-grafted polyoxometalate (POMs) nanoclusters as supramolecular additives to modify Nafion via co-assembly. These POMs can precisely and robustly decorate at Nafion ionic domains, with their fluoroalkyl chains anchoring into the perfluorinated matrix while their inorganic clusters stay in the ionic regions. The hybrid membranes, with continuous proton hopping sites and nanoscale steric hindrance offered by POMs, exhibit a 56% increase in proton conductivity and a 100% improvement in proton/vanadium selectivity. This leads to significantly enhanced power density and energy efficiency in fuel cells and vanadium flow batteries, respectively. These results underscore the intriguing potential of molecular cluster additives in improving the functions of ion-conducting membranes.

Metal-Organic Framework/Pvdf Composite Membranes with High H-2 Permselectivity Synthesized by Ammoniation

Abstract:Herein we report a new ammoniation-based chemical modification strategy for synthesis of continuous and uniform metal-organic framework (MOF)/polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) membranes with attractive performance. Ammoniation can promote the support PVDF membrane to produce amino groups, form a nanoparticle structure, and be well cross-linked; therefore, the high-density heterogeneous nucleation sites for MOFs growth were provided and the thermal stability and chemical resistance of composite membranes can be greatly improved. The high-quality layers of representative Cu-BTC and ZIF-8 were synthesized on the chemically modified PVDF membranes. By ammoniation, ZIF-7 can even be grown under harsh synthetic conditions such as in DMF precursor solutions at 403K. The fabricated MOF/PVDF composite membranes with excellent hollow fiber structures and enhanced structural stability exhibited high H-2 permselectivities for H-2/CO2 and H-2/N-2.

Abstract:Abstract Proton exchange membrane (PEM) is developing towards thin thickness and high mechanical strength for extraordinary performance proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs). However, the commercial membrane such as Nafion can hardly satisfy the practical application of PEMFCs because of high gas crossover and low mechanical strength when the thickness is less than 20 μm. Here, a reinforced composite membrane (denoted as P110-PFSA) was synthesized by blending poly(vinylidene fluoride)(PVDF) featured with high molecular weight of M w = 1100000 g mol -1 into perfluorosulfonic acid resin (PFSA). The P110-PFSA with the thickness of 15 μm exhibits tensile strength of over 33 MPa because the PVDF with high molecular weight forms a higher density of hydrogen bonds with PFSA, resulting in a reinforcement of the bonding strength between PVDF and PFSA. H 2 /O 2 fuel cell performance with the P110-PFSA shows more than 1170 mW cm -2 fed with H 2 at 70 °C and 100% RH much better than that with Nafion 211. Direct methanol fuel cell power densities of the blent PEM are 92, 61, 50, 28 and 15 mW cm -2 fed with 2, 6, 10,16 and 20 M methanol solution respectively at the anode.
A “H2O Donating/methanol Accepting” Platform for Preparation of Highly Selective Nafion-based Proton Exchange Membranes

Abstract:For a proton exchange membrane (PEM), the ratio of its proton conductivity to its fuel permeability usually defines the membrane selectivity. Generally, a highly selective PEM is preferred for application in direct methanol fuel cells. Herein, sulfonated SiO2@polystyrene core–shell (SiO2@sPS) nanoparticles were synthesized and then imbedded into a Nafion membrane by a blending–casting method. SiO2@sPS partakes in strong interactions with the Nafion polymer, which benefits its dispersion in the membrane matrix. The as-prepared SiO2@sPS + Nafion composite PEM presents a large increase in its proton conductivity owing to the introduction of additional –SO3H groups and hence has optimized channels for proton transport. Meanwhile, a reduced methanol crossover was also observed for the SiO2@sPS + Nafion composite PEM because of the formation of obstructed transport channels for bulk methanol. Besides this, a deep investigation on further enhancement of the membrane’s performance was conducted by etching the SiO2 core and hence forming well-dispersed uniform hollow spheres inside the membrane matrix. The intact hollow sulfonated PS spheres (h-sPS) acted as water reservoirs which in turn could gradually release water to hydrate the membrane under high-temperature and low-humidity conditions. Therefore, compared to the SiO2@sPS + Nafion membrane, the h-sPS + Nafion one presented a further increased proton conductivity at 100 °C under 40% RH. Meanwhile, h-sPS further suppressed methanol penetration by trapping it inside the hollow spheres. Herein, a “H2O donating/methanol accepting” mechanism was proposed for the first time, providing a promising platform to alleviate critical disadvantages of Nafion membranes and thereby fabricate highly selective Nafion-based PEMs.

Abstract:Nanofibrous proton exchange membranes (PEMs) play an important role in improving the performance of the fuel cells. In this paper, two kinds of Nafion nanofibrous PEMs, Nafion-E/W and Nafion-DMF, were fabricated respectively by using ethanol/water (E/W) and N, N -dimethylformamide (DMF) as the solvent and their properties, such as the morphologies, water uptake, area swelling, ion exchange capabilities, conductivities, and mechanical properties were examined. Nafion-E/W nanofibers showed a thick diameter of 6,089 nm and Nafion-DMF nanofibers a thin diameter of 410 nm. Then the two Nafion nanofibers were annealed to provide the PEMs. Compared with Nafion 117 membranes and Nafion-DMF PEMs, Nafion-E/W PEMs showed the greatest water uptake and area swelling of respectively 59.75 % and 30.31 % and the conductivity increased to 0.1405 S/cm, more than twice as much as Nafion 117 membranes, but the broken stress decreased to 5.49 MPa, nearly half of Nafion 117 membranes. Nafion-DMF PEMs showed the lowest water uptake, area swelling, and conductivity of 22.67 %, 10.75 %, and 0.0410 S/cm, and the broken stress reached 14.20 MPa, greater than 11.0 MPa of Nafion 117 membranes. The obtained experimental results are instructive to improve the properties of Nafion PEMs.

The Incorporation of Sulfonated PAF Enhances the Proton Conductivity of Nafion Membranes at High Temperatures

Abstract:Nafion membranes are widely used as proton exchange membranes, but their proton conductivity deteriorates in high-temperature environments due to the loss of water molecules. To address this challenge, we propose the utilization of porous aromatic frameworks (PAFs) as a potential solution. PAFs exhibit remarkable characteristics, such as a high specific surface area and porosity, and their porous channels can be post-synthesized. Here, a novel approach was employed to synthesize a PAF material, designated as PAF-45D, which exhibits a specific surface area of 1571.9 m2·g-1 and possesses the added benefits of facile synthesis and a low cost. Subsequently, sulfonation treatment was applied to PAF-45D in order to introduce sulfonic acid groups into its pores, resulting in the formation of PAF-45DS. The successful incorporation of sulfonic groups was confirmed through TG, IR, and EDS analyses. Furthermore, a novel Nafion composite membrane was prepared by incorporating PAF-45DS. The Nyquist plot of the composite membranes demonstrates that the sulfonated PAF-45DS material can enhance the proton conductivity of Nafion membranes at high temperatures. Specifically, under identical film formation conditions, doping with a 4% mass fraction of PAF-45DS, the conductivity of the Nafion composite membrane increased remarkably from 2.25 × 10-3 S·cm-1 to 5.67 × 10-3 S·cm-1, nearly 2.5 times higher. Such promising and cost-effective materials could be envisioned for application in the field of Nafion composite membranes.

Abstract:High-quality thin-film composite (TFC) membranes with high selectivity and permeability have great significance owing to their practical applications, specifically for the accurate differentiation of monovalent and divalent ions. However, the trade-off effect between selectivity and permeability is still a big challenge due to the difficult structure adjustment of the selective layer. Herein, polydopamine (PDA) functionalized with a hydrophobic long alkane chain was first explored as a functional amphiphilic interlayer to synthesize high-quality TFC membranes via a confined interfacial polymerization (IP) reaction. The amphiphilic interlayer not only restricted the formation of the polyamide (PA) matrix in the pores of the substrate but also accelerated spatially more homogeneous polymerization and formed a PA active layer with a more uniform pore size distribution. The method may provide an effective principle for the construction of versatile polyamide-based membranes with high perm-selectivity on various supports. The NaCl/Na2SO4 separation factor of the D-8/PA membrane reached as high as 204.07, while the flux increased up to 25.71 L m-2 h-1 bar-1. This progress provides a more feasible way for the construction of high-quality TFC membranes with a devisable and creative amphiphilic interlayer for industrial application.

Abstract:To obtain positively charged layer and achieve high divalent cation rejection, a novel nanofiltration (NF) membrane was successfully fabricated by utilizing polyethyleneimine (PEI), newly fabricated polyacrolein (PA) and amine silane coupling agent γ-aminopropyl triethoxysilane (APTES). The PA was synthesized via radical polymerization to avoid the migration and volatilization of small molecule in the typical coating process, making NF membranes even with great stability. On the one hand, the PEI crosslinked with PA through Schiff base reaction; on the other hand, the in-situ hydrolysis self-polycondensation of APTES generated loose networks with Si-O-Si bonds which provided the permeation channel for water and accordingly boosted the water permeance. The water permeance of the optimal PEI/PA/APTES membrane could reach 16.9 L·m-2·h-1·bar-1 and the Mg2+ and Ca2+ rejections were 98.8% and 97.3%, respectively, better than those of commercial NF membranes, breaking up the “trade off” effect. This study prepared a high-performance PEI/PA/APTES hybrid NF membrane oriented for hard water softening in tap water and brackish water via the non-interfacial macromolecule crosslinking coating method.
Enhancing Proton Conductivity and Dimensional Stability of Nanofiber Proton Exchange Membranes through In Situ Growth of MOF-Modified PVDF Nanofibers

Abstract:Proton exchange membranes often encounter challenges with proton conductivity and dimensional stability under conditions of high temperature and low humidity. Incorporating proton-conductive nanofibers into the membrane fortifies its dimensional stability and establishes extra proton transfer channels at the interface between the fibers and matrix, thereby improving proton conductivity. This study utilized polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) fibers as a base material, modified with ethylenediamine to yield amine-functionalized cross-linked structures. UiO-66-NH2 and UiO-66-NH2–SO3H were then grown in situ on these fibers, and the resultant structures were integrated with Nafion to fabricate metal–organic framework (MOF)-modified nanofiber proton exchange membranes (NFPEMs). We examined the growth of MOFs and their role in enhancing the nanofiber proton exchange membrane’s properties. Both UiO-66-NH2 and UiO-66-NH2–SO3H were successfully incorporated, resulting in a maximum enhancement of proton conductivity by 149.69 and 80.38%, respectively, compared with PVDF@Nafion, and the proton conductivity of the MOF-loaded membrane reaches 152.11 ms/cm at 80 °C and 100% relative humidity. The swelling rates were also significantly reduced by up to 59.16 and 57.94%, relative to Nafion, effectively boosting dimensional stability and thermal stability. These improvements are attributed to the additional proton transfer channels formed by the MOFs, the contribution of acid–base pairs, limitations imposed by MOF porosity on water molecule mobility, and the supportive three-dimensional network conferred by PVDF. Findings from this research provide valuable guidance for the design of NFPEMs.

Abstract:Nafion-boron nitride (NBN) nanocomposites with a Nafion-functionalized periphery are prepared via a convenient and ecofriendly Nafion-assisted water-phase exfoliation method. Nafion and the boron nitride nanosheet present strong interactions in the NBN nanocomposite. Then the NBN nanocomposites were blended with Nafion to prepare NBN Nafion composite proton exchange membranes (PEMs). NBN nanocomposites show good dispersibility and have a noticeable impact on the aggregation structure of the Nafion matrix. Connected long-range ionic nanochannels containing exaggerated (-SO3-)n ionic clusters are constructed during the membrane-forming process via the hydrophilic and H-bonding interactions between NBN nanocomposites and Nafion matrix. The addition of NBN nanocomposites with sulfonic groups also provides additional proton transportation spots and enhances the water uptake of the composite PEMs. The proton conductivity of the NBN Nafion composite PEMs is significantly increased under various conditions relative to that of recast Nafion. At 80 °C-95% relative humidity, the proton conductivity of 0.5 NBN Nafion is 0.33 S·cm-1, 6 times that of recast Nafion under the same conditions.

Abstract:In fuel cells and electrolyzers, suboptimal proton conductivity and its dramatic drop at low humidity remain major drawbacks in proton exchange membranes (PEMs), including current benchmark Nafion. Sustained through-plane (TP) alignment of nanochannels was proposed as a remedy but proved challenging. We report an anisotropic composite PEM, mimicking the water-conductive composite structure of bamboo that meets this challenge. Micro- and nanoscale alignment of conductive pathways is achieved by in-plane thermal compression of a mat composed of co-electrospun Nafion and poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) nanofibers stabilizing the alignment. This translates to pronounced TP-enhanced proton conductivity, twice that of pure Nafion at high humidity, 13 times larger at low humidity, and 10 times larger water diffusivity. This remarkable improvement is elucidated by molecular dynamics simulations, which indicate that stronger nanochannels alignment upon dehydration compensates for reduced water content. The presented approach paves the way to overcoming the major drawbacks of ionomers and advancing the development of next-generation membranes for energy applications.
Retarded Interfacial Formation of Polyamine-Based Nanofiltration Membranes with Pyromellitic Acid: Separation, Acid Stability, and Antifouling Performance

Abstract:Crosslinked and additive-added polyamide thin-film composite (TFC) nanofiltration (NF) membranes formed by the conventional interfacial polymerization (IP) process have shown good performances. However, studies on polyamine TFC NF membrane prepared via an adjusted IP process with low-cost acid ligands as an interfacial additive for improved liquid-based separation are still lagging. In this regard, a polyamine-based TFC NF membrane synthesized by retarding the interfacial polymerization (IP) process with pyromellitic acid (PMA) (a polycarboxylate acid ligand) is herein reported. The PMA-adjusted membrane displayed a superb range of pure water fluxes from 9.8 to 20.4 L m–2 h–1 bar–1, with the best-performed membrane achieving up to 95.1% for Na2SO4 rejection. Thus, the water permeability of the PMA-TFC membrane is ∼2.4 times as high as the control TFC membrane. The best-performed PMA-TFC membrane showed good hydrophilicity, pressure resistance, and long-term filtration stability. In addition, the membrane structural stability was maintained with ∼3.9% declination in salt rejection after 30 days of immersion in 0.1 M HNO3 solution. Also, an impressive fouling resistance was achieved after three-cycle of bovine serum albumin fouling tests. This work, therefore, offers a more feasible way of designing polyamine-based NF membranes with good prospects in water reuse and nitric acid-generating wastewater treatment application.

Abstract:A new paradigm for energy is underway demanding decarbonized energy systems. Some of them rely on emerging electrochemical devices, crucial in hydrogen technologies, including fuel cells, CO 2 and water electrolysers, whose applications and performances depend on key components such as their separators/ion-exchange membranes. The most studied and already commercialized Nafion membrane shows great chemical stability, but its water content limits its high proton conduction to a limited range of operating temperatures. Here, we report the synthesis of a new series of triazinephosphonate derivatives and their use as dopants in the preparation of new modified Nafion membranes. The triazinephosphonate derivatives were prepared by substitution of chlorine atoms in cyanuric chloride. Diverse conditions were used to obtain the trisubstituted (4-hydroxyphenyl)triazinephosphonate derivatives and the (4-aminophenyl)triazinephosphonate derivatives, but with these amino counterparts, only the disubstituted compounds were obtained. The new modified Nafion membranes were prepared by casting incorporation of the synthesized 1,3,5-triazinephosphonate (TPs) derivatives. The evaluation of the proton conduction properties of the new membranes and relative humidity (RH) conditions and at 60 °C, showed that they present higher proton conductivities than the prepared Nafion membrane and similar or better proton conductivities than commercial Nafion N115, in the same experimental conditions. Abstract:Swelling of a Nafion film makes it very difficult to deposit thin catalyst layers on a membrane electrolyte. In this study, a process has been developed that utilizes the expansion of Nafion film in the deposition so as to mitigate this problem. When the film is fully expanded, catalyst ink can be applied on to the membrane directly by means of spraying or blade pasting without concerns over swelling. The resulting membrane electrode assembly shows good performance relative to commercial products.
Fabrication and characterization of a novel Nafion‐PTFE composite hollow fiber membrane

Abstract:<p>Nafion has been widely used in electrochemistry, but there are only a few reports on its application in other fields, such as, gas separation, even though it exhibits good performance. The primary reason for that is the high cost of Nafion and making a composite membrane with a thin Nafion layer is a potential solution to solve this problem. In this study, a novel Nafion‐PTFE composite hollow fiber membrane, which had a thin (~5 μm) and detect‐free Nafion layer on PTFE surface, without Nafion filling substrate pores was developed, differing from the reported ones in which Nafion resin was required to impregnate into porous PTFE membrane as thorough as possible to ensure the ion conductivity and operation stability. The surface morphology, crystallite, solubility in ethanol/water mixture, and water uptake of membranes were systemically investigated. The gas permeance tests were also conducted. The permeances of different gasses of prepared composite membranes were significantly enhanced compared with the commercial membranes due to the decrease of Nafion thicknesses, while the selectivity remained the same, verifying the detect‐free structure of Nafion layer on PTFE substrate. This study provided a good reference for the preparation and application of low‐cost Nafion composite membranes.</p>

Nanofiltration Membranes Via Co-Deposition of Polydopamine/polyethylenimine Followed by Cross-Linking

Abstract:Novel composite nanofiltration membranes (NFMs) were simply fabricated via co-deposition of mussel-inspired polydopamine (PDA) and polyetheylenimine (PEI) followed by glutaraldehyde (GA) crosslinking. A uniform, robust and defect-free selective layer was generated on the hydrolyzed polyacrylonitrile (HPAN) ultrafiltration membrane substrate, endowing the composite NFMs with high separation performance for multivalent ions. Zeta potential measurements indicate these NFMs are slightly positively charged, resulting in a salts rejection sequence of MgCl2>CaCl2>MgSO4>Na2SO4>NaCl at pH 5.5. The nanofiltration performance can be tuned by changing the co-deposition time and the mass ratio of dopamine/PEI. A mass ratio of 2/2 with 4h co-deposition is the optimum protocol for the membrane performances including surface hydrophilicity, water flux and salt rejection. Moreover, the composite NFMs show a good structural stability for immersing in ethanol or for long-term nanofiltration process.
Composite membranes of Nafion and poly(styrene sulfonic acid)-grafted poly(vinylidene fluoride) electrospun nanofiber mats for fuel cells

Abstract:Surface-initiated atom transfer radical polymerization has been performed on poly(vinylidene fluoride) electrospun nanofibers (PVDFNF) to incorporate poly(styrenesulfonic acid) (PSSA) chains tethered on PVDFNF surfaces. The obtained PSSA-g-PVDFNF nanofibers are used as reinforcement for Nafion to prepare Nafion/PSSA-g-PVDFNF composite membrane (Nafion/NF-CM). The PSSA chains tethered on the nanofiber surfaces improve the interfacial compatibility between the nanofiber reinforcement and the Nafion matrix, and might provide a proton-conducting pathway along the nanofibers. As a result, the proton conductivity of Nafion/NF-CM membrane is 2.5-fold of the value recorded with the nanofiber-free recasting Nafion membrane. The H2/O2 single cell employing Nafion/NF-CM membrane shows a maximum power density of 770mWcm−2 which is 1.5-fold of the value recorded with the commercial Nafion 212 membrane and a current density at 0.6V of 940mAcm−2 which is about 2.7-fold of the value recorded with Nafion 212. The Nafion/NF-CM membrane is also suitable for direct methanol fuel cell, in which it could be operated at a 5M methanol solution to show a cell performance of 91.2mWcm−2 for maximum power density and 464mAcm−2 for current density at 0.2V, which are about 1.5-fold of the values recorded with the commercial Nafion 117 membrane at 2M methanol solution.
