Abstract:Sulfonated poly(phthalazinone ether ketone)s (SPPEKs) and zirconium hydrogen phosphate (ZrP) hybrid membranes for direct methanol fuel cells (DMFCs) were prepared by the impregnation method and direct blending method. The physicochemical properties of these hybrid membranes were studied by means of field-emission scanning electron microscope (FSEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis, and thermogravimetry analysis (TGA). For the hybrid membranes prepared from impregnation procedure, the highest proton conductivity could reach 0.074 S/cm at 80°C under 100% relative humidity and the methanol permeability at room temperature is more than 10 times lower than that of Nafion 117. Abstract:In this work, the polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) electrospun fibers was applied as robust mechanical support and subsequently functionalized with polydopamine/polyethyleneimine (PDA/PEI) composite, then filled with sulfonated poly (ether ether ketone) (SPEEK) to obtain SPEEK-PDA/PEI@PVDF composite proton exchange membranes. The composite membranes achieved better balance on the mechanical stability and conduction performance, owing to enhanced interface interactions and compatibility between robust PVDF and conductive SPEEK. In wet conditions, the composite membrane exhibited excellent mechanically robust with tensile strength of 34 MPa and elongation at break of almost 200 %. Furthermore, the composite membranes also showed high structure and performance stability during the measurement of proton conductivity and fuel cell performances, it could hold stable proton conductivity of 48 mScm(-1) (at 80 degrees C) and maximum power density of 58.9 mWcm(-2). The durability test further confirmed the super operating stability of composite membrane, only 2.6 % reduction in open circuit voltage was observed during operated at 80 degrees C for 100 h.y

Abstract:Sulfonated poly(ether ether ketone) (SPEEK) membranes were used as support material for Nafion–SPEEK–Nafion (NSN) composite membranes. The NSN composite membrane was prepared by immersing the SPEEK in the Nafion-containing casting solution. The resulting composite membranes were mechanically durable as we selected a suitable degree of sulfonation (DS) of PEEK, and we expect the composite membranes to be of low methanol permeability and high proton conductivity relative to pure SPEEK membranes. The proton conductivity and methanol permeability properties of the composite membrane were measured, and the effect of proton conducting layer was discussed with an empirical equation. It was found that the proton conductivity of the composite membrane exceeded that of the SPEEK membrane under the same condition. The methanol permeability of NSN membrane was higher than that of the same thick SPEEK membrane. The direct methanol fuel cell (DMFC) performance of the NSN membrane was better than that of the SPEEK membrane at 60°C using 1M methanol solution.
Improved Performance of Sulfonated Poly Ether Ether Ketone/three-Dimensional Hierarchical Molybdenum Disulfide Nanoflower Composite Proton Exchange Membrane for Fuel Cells

Abstract:As one of the most essential components of fuel cells, the commercialized Nafion-based proton exchange membranes(PEMs) suffer from several drawbacks like high cost and methanol permeability. The aim of this work is to fabricate a high performance PEM with combined low cost and methanol permeability together with high proton conductivity. Three-dimensional hierarchical molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) nanoflower is synthesized via a facile one-pot hydrothermal method, and then was embedd into sulfonated poly ether ether ketone (SPEEK) matrix to prepare composite PEM. The three-dimensional hierarchical architectures of MoS2 nanoflower can not only avoid the aggregation of MoS2 nanosheets but also provide abundant surface area and active sites, which are of benefit to fully take advantage of the intrinsic water absorption and methanol diffusion resistance ability of MoS2 nanosheets. The formed hydrogen bond network with water passway contributes to the improvement in proton conduction of composite membrane. As a consequence, composite membrane with 1 wt% MoS2 nanoflower loading content achieves optimized proton conductivity (0.123 S cm−1, 80 °C) and methanol permeability (21.5 × 10–7 cm2 s−1, 70 °C), which is 59.7% higher and 79.1% lower than that of SPEEK control membrane. Owing to increased proton conductivity and decreased methanol permeability, the maximum power density of the SPEEK/MoS2-1 composite membrane is 82.7 mW cm−2 at 70 °C, which is nearly 64.7% higher than that of pure SPEEK membrane (only 50.2 mW cm−2). Furthermore, the durability test confirms that the SPEEK/MoS2 composite membrane still possesses satisfactory stability even after continuous operation at 70 °C for 100 h.
Highly Proton Conductive and Mechanically Robust SPEEK Composite Membranes Incorporated with Hierarchical Metal–organic Framework/carbon Nanotubes Compound

Abstract:The preparation of composite proton exchange membranes (PEMs) by incorporating metal- organic frameworks (MOFs) into polymeric substrates has become a hot research topic in the field of fuel cells in recent years. In this work, ZSC was prepared by in-suit reacted with the precursor of ZIF-8 (Zeolitic Imidazolate Framework 8) and silica coated carbon nanotubes (SiO2@CNTs). The as-prepared ZSC was introduced into sulfonated poly (ether ether ketone) (SPEEK) to fabricate a series of composite proton exchange membranes SPEEK/ZSC-x (where x is the mass percentage between ZSC and SPEEK). The coating treatment of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) by silica not only can avoid the direct contacting among CNTs and enhance the dispersion in SPEEK matrix, but also realize the regulation of nucleation and crystallization process of ZIF-8 particles along the morphology of CNTs. The obtained SPEEK/ZSC composite membranes show improved performance owing to construction of interconnected network architecture and the compositional advantages of the ZSC materials. The proton conductivity of SPEEK/ZSC-0.5 membrane was up to 38.10 mS/cm at 80 °C, which was 1.8 times that of the pure SPEEK membrane (21.12 mS/cm) under the same condition. Moreover, the SPEEK/ZSC-0.5 showed better performance with peak power density of 38.9 mW/cm2 in 2 M methanol solution, which was 1.3 times that of the pure SPEEK membrane of 30.3 mW/cm2, the further stability tests confirmed that the composite film maintained good voltage stability even after 100 h of continuous operation at 80 °C. These results indicate that the strategy of construction MOFs and functional CNTs hybrid materials show promising application prospects in the preparation of high performance PEMs.

Abstract:A facile spinning-based strategy was developed to fabricate continuous carbon nanofiber (CNF)- and activated carbon nanofiber (ACNF)-supported sulfonated poly(ether ether ketone) (SPEEK) membranes as proton exchange membranes (PEMs) for fuel cells. Polyacrylonitrile nanofibers were solution blown as precursor to obtain CNF and ACNF mats. These mats were then impregnated into a SPEEK solution to fabricate pore-filled composite membranes. The morphologies as well as thermal and mechanical properties were examined. Moreover, the performance of the mats as PEMs was investigated. Results showed that carbonaceous nanofibers were dispersed incompactly in the SPEEK matrix and thus made dense membranes. The introduction of CNFs and ACNFs to composite membranes significantly improved mechanical properties and proton conductivity, which indicated that carbonaceous nanofiber-supported membranes are promising materials for PEM fuel cells.

Abstract:The SiO2-Nafion/sulfonated poly (ether ether ketone) (SPEEK) composite membranes are fabricated by using the simple mechanical ball-milling process to combine SiO2 glass powders with small portion of Nafion, in which SiO2 glass powders are prepared by modified sol-gel progress and Nafion is embedded in situ into a highly porous silica network. The morphology, thermal and mechanical properties, pore structure, proton conductivity and fuel cell performance of the SiO2-Nafion/SPEEK composite membranes are investigated. The poor miscibility of Nafion and sulfonated aromatic polymer is solved by fixing Nafion into SiO2 glass powders. The composite membranes perform well even if the proportion of inorganic component in membranes is as high as 40 wt.%. A maximum of proton conductivity, 0.018 S cm(-1), is obtained from the membrane of 4(8Si-2N)/6SPEEK at 80 degrees C and 90% relative humidity, which is owing to its enhanced hygroscopicity and highly dispersed Nafion clusters. In addition, a single fuel cell equipped with the composite membrane shows a peak power density of 589.2 mW cm(-2) at 70 degrees C. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:As a key component of direct methanol fuel cells (DMFCs), proton exchange membranes (PEMs) are required to be mechanically robust, methanol-resistant, and conductive to protons. In this work, a novel sulfonated poly (ether ether ketone) (SPEEK) impregnated poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) electrospun nanofiber membrane was prepared. To avoid the collapse of PVDF fiber framework by the solvent of SPEEK, we designed a SPEEK/solvent/nonsolvent ternary filling system through the cloud point titration curves. Meanwhile, polydopamine (PDA), an extraordinarily adhesive and hydrophilic material, was coated on the surface of PVDF nanofibers to further improve the interface bonding between SPEEK and PVDF. The introduction of PVDF nanofibers completely changed the rigidity of SPEEK thus achieving a 5.4-fold increase of toughness when compared with that of pure SPEEK at dry state. Notably, significantly improved methanol barrier ability was also obtained due to the tortuous methanol crossover pathways caused by the embedded PVDF nanofibers. In the DMFC tests, the ultralow methanol permeability and relatively high proton conductivity of the obtained composite membrane made it could be operated with 5 M methanol fuel and showed a peak power density of 104.0 mW cm(-2), which was higher than the values of 89.3 mW cm(-2) (2 M methanol) and 84.0 mW cm(-2) (5 M methanol) recorded with commercial Nafion 115 membrane.

Abstract:The phosphosilicate sol/sulfonated poly(ether ether ketone) (SPEEK) composite membranes are fabricated by using a simple mechanical mixing process. The performance of the composite membranes is investigated, including their morphology, thermal and mechanical properties, water adsorption and swelling ratio, proton conductivity and fuel cell performance. The composite membranes obtain the advantages of both components while avert their disadvantages, showing excellent comprehensive performance. The utilization of SPEEK endows the composite membranes with good mechanical properties even if the proportion of inorganic components in the membranes is as high as 40 wt.%. The incorporation of phosphosilicate sol not only enhances the dimensional and thermal stability of the composite membranes, but also improves their conductivity significantly. A maximum of proton conductivity of 0.138 S cm(-1), higher than that of Nafion 212 membrane (0.124 S cm(-1)), is obtained from the composite membrane 6SPEEK/4(P-Si) under the conditions of 70 degrees C and 95% relative humidity, owing to its enhanced hygroscopicity and functional groups. Besides, a single fuel cell equipped with the composite membrane 7SPEEK/3(P-Si) releases a peak power density of 449.9 mW cm(-2) at 60 degrees C, higher than that of cells equipped with SPEEK and Nafion 212 membrane measured under the same conditions. Abstract:In fuel cell applications, the proton exchange membrane (PEM) is the major component where the balance among dimensional stability, proton conductivity, and durability is a long-term trail. In this research, a series of blended SPEEK/SPPO membranes were designed by varying the amounts of sulfonated poly(ether ether ketone) (SPEEK) into sulfonated poly(phenylene) oxide (SPPO) for fuel cell application. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) was used to confirm the successful synthesis of the blended membranes. Morphological features of the fabricated membranes were characterized by using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Results showed that these membranes exhibited homogeneous structures. The fabricated blended membranes SPEEK/SPPO showed ion exchange capacity (IEC) of 1.23 to 2.0 mmol/g, water uptake (WR) of 22.92 to 64.57% and membrane swelling (MS) of 7.53 to 25.49%. The proton conductivity of these blended membranes was measured at different temperature. The proton conductivity and chemical stability of the prepared membranes were compared with commercial membrane Nafion 117 (Sigma-Aldrich, St. Louis, Missouri, United States) under same experimental conditions. The proton conductivity of the fabricated membranes increased by enhancing the amount of SPPO into the membrane matrix. Moreover, the proton conductivity of the fabricated membranes was investigated as a function of temperature. Results demonstrated that these membranes are good for applications in proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC).

Abstract:<p>In this article, a novel proton exchange membrane, shown both high proton conductivity and excellent stability, has been demonstrated, which is simply fabricated by embedding poly(vinylidene fluoride) grafted poly(styrene sulfonic acid) (PSSA-g-PVDF) nanofibers in sulfonated poly (ether ether ketone) (SPEEK) matrix. The novel nanofiber-enhanced membrane (NEM) presents an utlra-high proton conductivity of 720.6 mS/cm, which is 2.4 times higher than the unmodified SPEEK membrane. The long-range continuous proton transport channel built at the interface between the matrix and nanofibers, known as acid-condensed layer, has been directly confirmed by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) measurements for the first time, which illustrates the result. Futhermore, the NEMs are always provided with the excellent dimensional, thermal, and mechanical stability, which benefit from the sturdy three-dimensional network of PSSA-g-PVDF nanofibers. In virtue of the high conductivity and stability, the NEMs have proved to be very promising in fuel cells.</p>

Abstract:A series of novel nanofiber composite proton exchange membranes were fabricated by embedding highly sulfonated poly (ether ketone) (SPEEK) nanofibers in a cross-linked SPEEK matrix, showing both high proton conductivity and excellent stability. Composite membranes were prepared with salt-form SPEEK nanofiber mats filled with acid-form SPEEK solution. After thermal treatment at 180 °C in the presence of dimethyl sulfoxide, the cross-linking reaction occurred in the acid-form SPEEK matrix but not in nanofibers. The dimensional stability, mechanical strength, and oxidative stability of the composite membrane were significantly improved due to thermal cross-linking treatment. The swelling ratio of all the cross-linked membranes was below 30% in hot water, and the maximum tensile strength reached 68 MPa. The nanofibers formed non-cross-linked regions and retained rich sulfonic acid groups to construct fast, long-range proton transport channels. The proton conductivity of the nanofiber composite cross-linked membrane reached 200 mS/cm exceeding the pristine cross-linked membrane (135 mS/cm). The fuel cell performance showed a peak power density of 485 mW/cm2 at 80 °C under 100% relative humidity.

Abstract:To overcome the difficulties of excessively swollen or dissolve of sulfonated polyarylene ether nitrile in high temperature, the multi-layer proton exchange composite membranes based on sulfonated polyarylene ether nitrile (SPEN) and sulfonated carbon nanotubes (S-CNTs) were designed via facile step-by-step solution casting technique. The multi-layer structure of membranes can make the membrane more compact and reached the aim of low-swelling. The multi-layer structure of composite membrane was confirmed through scanning electron microscope, exhibiting improved dimensional stability, larger tensile strength and elongation at break than pure SPEN with a certain content of S-CNTs in the wet state. The proton conductivity of composite membranes with 3 wt% S-CNTs achieved 0.094 and 0.275 S/cm at 20 degrees C and 80 degrees C, respectively, which is higher than that of Nafion 117. Besides, the methanol permeability of SPEN/S-CNTs/SPEN composite membranes is lower than that of the commercial Nafion 117 membrane. Novel Nanocomposite PEM Membranes with Continuous Proton Transportation Channel and Reinforcing Network Formed by Electrospinning Solution Casting Method

Abstract:In this work, a kind of novel nanocomposite proton exchange membranes (PEMs) with excellent properties for fuel cell application is obtained through the combination of electrospinning and solution casting. PEMs are obtained via the electrospinning of solution of sulfonated poly(arylene ether ketone)s (SPAEK)s with carboxylic acid group (SPAEK-COOH) inserted with nanocrystal cellulose (NCC) first, and then, the SPAEK-COOH solution is cast on the obtained electrospinning membrane to fill the voids. According to the scanning electron microscopy image of the membrane surface and freeze-fractured cross section, the nonporous membrane was successfully obtained. The water uptake and the swelling rate of the nanocomposite membrane with 2% NCC (NF-NCC2) decrease to 62% and 61.5%, respectively, and the membrane shows much higher proton conductivity (0.29 S cm(-1)) than the pristine SPAEK-COOH membrane (NF-NCC0) (0.196 S cm(-1)) at 100 degrees C. Furthermore, NF-NCC2 shows a tensile strength of 38 MPa, which is an increase of 36% compared to NF-NCC0 (28 MPa). The orderly and uniform distribution of NCC in the electrospinning nanofiber and further in the membranes.

Abstract:Sulfonated poly(ether ether ketone)-poly(ether ketone) (SPEEK-co-PEK-x) copolymers with controlled degree of sulfonation are synthesized by the polycondensation reaction of varying monomer ratios. Compared with the traditional homopolymer sulfonated poly(ether ether ketone) (H-SPEEK), the SPEEK-co-PEK-x copolymer membrane has a high degree of sulfonation and excellent proton conductivity. Meanwhile, it also has favorable mechanical properties and stability. This is attributed to the introduction of the -PEK- segment. The SPEEK-co-PEK-75 membrane exhibits the highest conductivity (0.285 S cm −1 ) at 80 °C, 100% RH and when tests at 80 °C with 80% RH, the SPEEK-co-PEK-75 membrane reaches 0.0587 S cm −1 . In addition, the tensile strength of the SPEEK-co-PEK-75 membrane reaches 47.66 MPa at room temperature . Moreover, the study investigates the impact of key variables on the single-cell performance of SPEEK-co-PEK-x membranes. The measured peak power densities of the SPEEK-co-PEK-75 membrane are 212 mW cm −2 and 495 mW cm −2 at 70% RH and 100% RH, which are 1.3 times and 1.7 times higher than that of the Nafion 117 membrane, respectively. After the 80 h durability test at 80 °C and 80% RH, the voltage of the SPEEK-co-PEK-75 membrane only drops by 4.8%. The presence of the -PEK- segment results in a more compact and connected distribution of hydrophilic ion clusters in the SPEEK-co-PEK-X membrane. This adjustment greatly enhances the performance of the membrane, making it an excellent candidate for proton exchange membrane in H 2 /air fuel cells.

Consecutive and reliable proton transfer channels construction based on the compatible interface between nanofiber and SPEEK

Abstract:It is indispensable to balance the proton conductivity and dimensional stability, as well as maintain the high long-term durability of proton exchange membranes (PEMs). Herein, we proposed the sandwich structure composite membrane containing a middle layer of sulfonated polyetheretherketone (SPEEK) sandwiched by two layers of hybrid polyimide (PI) nanofiber. The hybrid nanofibers were fabricated via in situ loading different contents of NH2-UiO-66 (NU6) onto PI nanofiber as proton acceptors for amino-functionalization, resulting in NU6@PI nanofibers (NP) with different forms of assembly. By incorporating three-dimensional nanofibers into SPEEK, the dimensional stability of the composite membrane was dramatically boosted. The –SO3H groups on SPEEK interact with –NH2 groups on NP to form long-range acid-base pairs and acid-rich layer along the NP-SPEEK interface, which can provide abundant proton-conducting sites for proton transfer. Significantly, the continuous and uniform assembly of NU6 on PI nanofiber can form a compatible interface with SPEEK, ensuring the reliability of the proton pathways and robust mechanical properties. Insufficient or excessive loads of NU6 will lead to an imperfect NP-SPEEK interface, resulting in discontinuous proton channels or forming numerous defects that hinder continuous proton transport. The composite membrane of 4NP-SPEEK-4NP (40%NU6@PI-SPEEK-40%NU6@PI) with consecutive and reliable proton transfer channels displays enhanced stress, optimal proton conductivity, and excellent H2/O2 fuel cell performance. The durability test at 60 °C and 100% RH for 32 days reveals that the proton conductivity retention and tensile strength of the composite membrane are 89.8% and 47.8 MPa, which are 33.8% and 52.7% higher than those of SPEEK, respectively. The prepared membranes not only can be potential candidates for fuel cells but also provides a useful strategy for the longtime effective construction and regulation of proton transport channels in PEMs.

Abstract:<section class="article-section__content"><p>Simultaneous high proton conductivity with high oxidative stability is one of the major concerns in the proton exchange membrane (PEM) preparation. With this perspective, different loadings of the sulfated zirconia‐titania, a binary metal oxide that possesses enhanced physicochemical properties, nanoparticle in sulfonated poly(ether ether ketone) (SPEEK) polymer were evaluated by the response surface method to obtain the novel PEM with boosted proton conductivity and oxidative stability. Two models for correlation of proton conductivity and oxidative stability (in Fenton solution) with two independent factors, including sulfonation time and the weight percent of the nanoparticle loading, were obtained by central composite design. The optimum parameters to attain the highest proton conductivity with oxidative stability are found to be the sulfonation time of 6.48 hours and the nanoparticle weight percent of 10.12%. The nanoparticle loading was found to be the more significant factor in the proton conductivity model, while the sulfonation time in the oxidative stability model was the main affecting factor. The optimal membranes were characterized by <sup>1</sup>H NMR, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, Fenton test, Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA), water uptake, swelling ratio, and atomic force microscopy (AFM) analysis. The results indicate that the introduction of the optimal contents of SZrTi nanoparticle into the polymer matrix would improve the water uptake and consequently the proton conductivity at a higher temperature while keeping the swelling ratio at an acceptable range. The highest achieved proton conductivity by the resulted nanocomposite was 29.21 mS cm<sup>−1</sup> at 120°C with 186‐minute durability in the Fenton's reagent. Moreover, the maximum peak power density of 199 mW cm<sup>−2</sup> was achieved at 90°C and 100% RH for the single‐cell performance test of nanocomposite‐based membrane electrode assembly (MEA), while it was recorded at 112 mW cm<sup>−2</sup> for commercial MEA. Acceptable dispersion of SZrTi nanoparticle in the SPEEK matrix causes negligible fuel crossover flux (eg, 0.35 × 10<sup>−6</sup> mmol s<sup>−1</sup> cm<sup>−2</sup> and 12.49 × 10<sup>−6</sup> mmol s<sup>−1</sup> cm<sup>−2</sup> for nanocomposite‐based MEA and commercial MEA, respectively), which is indispensable to improve the mechanical and chemical stability. Abstract:Highly sulfonated poly(ether ether ketone ketone)s (SFPEEKKs) with sulfonation degrees of 2.34 (SFPEEKK5) and 2.48 (SFPEEKK10) were synthesized through the direct sulfonation of a fluorenecontaining poly(ether ether ketone ketone) under a relatively mild reaction condition. Using the solution blending method, sulfonated nanocrystal cellulose (sNCC)-enhanced SFPEEKK composites (SFPEEKK/sNCC) were successfully prepared for investigation as proton exchange membranes. Transmission electron microscopy showed that sNCC was uniformly distributed in the composite membranes. The properties of the composite membranes, including thermal stability, mechanical properties, water uptake, swelling ratio, oxidative stability and proton conductivity were thoroughly evaluated. Results indicated that the insertion of sNCC could contribute to water management and improve the mechanical performance of the membranes. Notably, the proton conductivity of SFPEEKK5/sNCC-5 was as high as 0.242 S cm(-1) at 80 degrees C. All data proved the potential of SFPEEKK/sNCC composites for proton exchange membranes in medium-temperature fuel cells. (C) 2017 Published by Elsevier B.V.

Abstract:Nanocomposite polymers based on phosphonic acid functionalized carbon nanotubes (CNT-POH) and sulfonated poly(ether ether ketone) (SPEEK) have been fabricated and employed as highly efficient proton exchange membranes. CNT-POH were synthesized through the grafting of carbon nanotubes (CNT) with diethylphosphatoethyl triethoxysilane and subsequent acidification of phosphate to phosphonic acid ligands. Incorporating CNT-POH into SPEEK matrix improves the proton conductivity at different temperatures and relative humidity, which can be attributed to the homogeneous dispersion of highly hydrophilic phosphonic acid groups and the formation of proton transport channels in the membrane. The methanol permeability of the composite membranes is also decreased, owing to the increased tortuosity of the methanol transport channel. The CNT in SPEEK matrix also enhance the dimensional stability and mechanical property remarkably. Consequently, this phosphonic acid functionalized CNT/SPEEK composite membrane (SPEEK-POH) is a potential candidate for application in direct methanol fuel cells (DMFC).
