Abstract:The advance in communication technology and growth of internet traffic have continuously driven the fast evolution of networks. Compared to the traditional optoelectronic switch, all-optical switch provides high throughput, rich routing functionalities, and excellent flexibility for rapid signal exchange in fiber optical network system. Among various all-optical switches, thermal actuated ring type switch provides the advantages of high accuracy, easy actuation, and reasonable switching speed. However, when scale up, thermal ring switch may encounter issues related to fabrication error, non-accurate wavelength response, and large terminal numbers in the control circuit. In this article we propose the employment of an integrated control circuit to compensate the fabrication error and tuning the wavelength response in a thermal actuated ring type optical switch. Additional functionalities can also be added in this circuit by tailoring externally the roundtrip loss or coupling constants of the ring. The design concept can be easily scaled up for large array format optical switch system without much change in the terminal numbers thanks to the three dimensional hierarchy of control circuit design, which effectively reduces the terminal numbers into the cubic root of the total control unit numbers. The integrated circuit has been designed, simulated, as well as fabricated, and demonstrated a decent performance with Free Spectral Range (FSR) equal to 1.5nm at a wavelength of 1534nm and center wavelength shift of the ring up to 0.3nm for thermal actuated ring type optical switch.

Abstract:An optical switch based on a scanning mirror was designed in this paper. The optical switch is pro-grammable and controlled by an embedded Linux system that switches between the fiber array channels onthe UI of the touch display. Meanwhile, the switching sequence and residence time of the optical switch canbe preset. In addition, the optical switch can be self-calibrated to obtain the maximum output power of eachchannel. The principle of the optical switch is analyzed and the performance of the optical switch is tested ex-perimentally. The experimental results show that the average insertion loss is less than 17 dB for the singlemode fiber array, the average crosstalk between adjacent channels is more than 30 dB, and the switching time between the adjacent channel is less than 1.3 ms. The average insertion loss is less than 2.4 dB for the multi-mode fiber array. It has the advantages of low loss, low delay, high precision, good stability, high repeatabil-ity, low cross-talk between the adjacent channel, and good man-machine interaction for the application of theWavelength Division Multiplexing (WDM) and multi-channel optical waveguide sensors test device

Compact All-Optical Switches Based on Photon-Induced Suppression of Mode Interference

Abstract:An optically activated optical switch based on suppression of mode interference (SMI) is presented. The imaging properties of multi-mode interference (MMI) section in the switch with Y-branch can be modified by a controlling light injection. The switch was simulated by finite difference beam propagation method (FD-BPM) and fabricated on GaAlAs/GaAs epitaxial materials. At the wavelength of 1.31 um, the primary experiment showed an extinction ratio of about 8 dB with controlling light power density of 73.5 W/mm2.

Abstract:We report a low-cost non-silicon-based fiber optic switch featuring a novel design of reflection cell, which is capable of ±5V pulse operation and self-latching. The switch prototypes were measured to have a switch time of 2.6ms, return loss of −54dB and a low insertion loss. Enabling technology is precision electrical discharge machining. The dynamic process of switching was analyzed using an FEA software ANSYS for design optimization. A reasonable agreement was obtained between the measurement and calculated results. The switch is scalable to 8×8 or above and allows the realization of high capacity cross-connects.

Abstract:In this paper a silicon-based digital optical switch (DOS) with the slot structure is demonstrated. By filling electro-optic polymer in the void slot of the branches, the electro-optic effect can be applied to the DOS, and a high-speed silicon switch with digital switching property can be achieved. Analysis shows that the crosstalk is about 35dB, switching speed is less than lps, and the device length is less than 1mm. © 2009 SPIE.

Abstract:We report a fiber optic switch based on a novel MEMS technology allowing fast switch (<2 ms), excellent isolation (>50dB) and wide bandwidth. Each switch module consists of an electromagnetically actuated gold-coated silicon mirror rotating around a 100 mum diameter shaft and a miniature 5V driven coil. Enabling technology is precision EDM machining and laser cutting. The switch is scalable to 8 X 8 and allows the realization of high capacity cross-connects.

Abstract:A high-speed compact silicon digital optical switch (DOS) is proposed in this paper. The direct electro-optic effect is applied by filling electro-optic polymer in the void slot of the branches, which compensates the limitation of silicon itself. The crosstalk of about 35dB and the insertion loss of 0.7dB is obtained, the switching speed is less than 1ps, and the whole device length can be shortened to 616μm even using the basic mode-evolving principle and a simple Y-type structure. Analysis also shows that the device has good fabrication tolerance and wavelength independence over the C-band.

Abstract:The 2 mu m waveband, specifically near 1.9 mu m, is an imperative resource that could possibly be exploited in future communications systems. This is due to the promising infrastructural developments at the wavelength region (hollow-core photonic bandgap fiber, thulium-doped fiber amplifier) near 1.9 mu m. In this work, we report the 1 x N selector switch based on Mach-Zehnder interferometers operating near the 1.9 mu m wavelength region. As an elementary cell ( N = 2), an insertion loss as low as 1.1 dB, P-pi of 23 mW, 10-90% switching time of lower than 38 mu s and a crosstalk of lower than -25 dB from 1880 to 1955 nm has been determined. In order to prove scalability, the 1 x 8 switch ( N = 8) is demonstrated, indicating crosstalk as low as -21 dB, considering all possible switching configurations across the abovementioned wavelength region. Insertion loss levels are examined.

Abstract:We propose and demonstrate a 1 x 2 thermooptic digital optical switch with variable optical attenuators that are integrated with the S-bend waveguides connecting the output of the Y-switch with a standard fiber array. With a total heating power of 140 mW applied to the switch, we have achieved less than -42-dB optical crosstalk. The wavelength response of the switch is flat across the entire C-band. The average polarization-dependent loss of the switch is about 0.49 dB.

Abstract:By filling the liquid crystal (LC) in the air holes of a photonic crystal fiber (PCF) with 8 mm length, a compact multi-band thermal optical switch is proposed here including two important telecommunication band, i.e., 1265 to 1317 nm and 1508 to 1568 nm. Within the bandwidth, the extinction ratio can be as high as 30 dB. Under the combined action of the bandgap-guiding mechanism and the interference effect, a temperature change of only 1 degrees C after clearing temperature (T-c) of the LC induces multi-band thermal optical switch of the LC-filled PCF. It is also noted that the transmission spectrum of the LC-filled PCF is quite sensitive to the ambient temperature. The consequent thermal sensitive is 3.9 nm/degrees C, making it a very good candidate for monitoring the temperature herein.

Abstract:Optical switch based on an ultra-compact double-slot photonic crystal waveguide (DS-PCWG) with a titanium/aluminum microheater is demonstrated. The operating principle relies on shifting a transmission-dip caused by the defect mode coupling in photonic band gap (PBG). Based on the unique mode coupling in PBG, low switching power of 9.2 mW and high extinction ratio of 17 dB are achieved experimentally while the length of DS-PCWG is only 16 μm.

Abstract:We demonstrate the design and experimental implementation of an electro-optic control system that is used to detect the arrival of packets at the optical switch input, process the headers of the packets, and control switching according to the header content for both fixed and variable length packets. We also demonstrate the flexibility of the electro-optic crosspoint switch for implementation in a photonic packet switching (PPS) network. Furthermore, contention resolution is demonstrated in the electro-optic crosspoint switch by detecting packets at the input ports and controlling the switch operation accordingly. By incorporating this control system into the crosspoint switch it is possible to route contending packets to a re-circulating fiber delay line and control the switch output in a flexible manner for any type of traffic depending on the applied switching algorithm. The experiments are carried out with 155 Mbit/s headers and 10 Gbit/s payloads transmitted on a single wavelength with a guard time of 12.8 ns between header and payload. PPS with bit error rate (BER) less than 10-9 is demonstrated. Error free contention resolution is shown with the main signal degradation being from the switch cell attenuation and amplifier ASE that can be alleviated by eliminating fiber-to-fiber transmission loss in the crosspoint.
