Abstract:An optical switch based on a scanning mirror was designed in this paper. The optical switch is pro-grammable and controlled by an embedded Linux system that switches between the fiber array channels onthe UI of the touch display. Meanwhile, the switching sequence and residence time of the optical switch canbe preset. In addition, the optical switch can be self-calibrated to obtain the maximum output power of eachchannel. The principle of the optical switch is analyzed and the performance of the optical switch is tested ex-perimentally. The experimental results show that the average insertion loss is less than 17 dB for the singlemode fiber array, the average crosstalk between adjacent channels is more than 30 dB, and the switching time between the adjacent channel is less than 1.3 ms. The average insertion loss is less than 2.4 dB for the multi-mode fiber array. It has the advantages of low loss, low delay, high precision, good stability, high repeatabil-ity, low cross-talk between the adjacent channel, and good man-machine interaction for the application of theWavelength Division Multiplexing (WDM) and multi-channel optical waveguide sensors test device

Abstract:An on-chip three-mode division multiplexing circuit using a simple ADC-based TE 0 & TE 1 & TE 2 (de)multiplexer is demonstrated to improve the link capacity of on-chip optical interconnects. The proposed (de)multiplexer does not contain any tapered waveguide which is different from the previous mode (de)multiplexer based on ADCs. Here, we choose multimode waveguide width first and then confirm corresponding width of the other two waveguides. Thus the bus waveguide without any tapers can not only reduce complexity of (de)multiplexer but also reduce difficulty of the fabrication. Our simulation results show that the hybrid multiplexer has relatively low loss and low crosstalk about −40 dB, −26.99 dB and −28.72 dB for each mode around 1550 nm with a width-variation w =±25 nm. These properties make the proposed mode-(de)multiplexer suitable for application in high-capacity data transmission.

Abstract:Mode-division-multiplexing technology is highly attractive to increase the capacity of optical interconnects. Various multimode operations have been investigated, among which optical mode switches provide one of the most important functions in mode-division-multiplexing systems. However, current optical mode switches have a non-negligible switching time, which can lead to an undesired cumulative delay in the optical network. In this contribution, we propose and experimentally demonstrate an optical mode switch using a three-waveguide-coupling structure in the lithium niobate on insulator platform. The demonstrated optical mode switch has an insertion loss of 4.3 dB, an extinction ratio of 17.1 dB, and a switching time of below 28 ps. This work paves the way for future chip-scale high-speed mode-division-multiplexing systems.

Abstract:In this work, we designed and fabricated a dual-mode switch based on triple-waveguide couplers and two thermal phase shifters, and demonstrated the first silicon-integrated mode division multiplexing (MDM) switching network for 2 - mu m waveband. The proposed dual-mode switch shows < 2.6 dB insertion loss, < -20 dB inter-mode crosstalk at 1960 nm, with broadband operation over 100 nm. The experimental results of dynamic switching at 10 kHz presents 9.2-mu s rising time and 13.2 - mu s falling time, with switching power of 19.2 mW. High speed on-chip MDM routing of 2 x 60 Gbps signal was experimentally demonstrated using the proposed 2-mu m MDM switching network, drawing the promising prospect for the future photonic integration and high-speed MDM networking at 2-mu m waveband.

Abstract:Owing to the waveguide birefringence in most photonic integrated circuits, optical switches are typically sensitive to the light state of polarization (SOP). In certain application scenarios, optical switches are required to process light signals with random SOPs from single-mode fibers. This study presents a method to achieve polarization-insensitive optical switches based on mode-insensitive devices after transforming the fundamental mode of one polarization component in randomly polarized light into a high-order mode of its orthogonal polarization, without extra power consumption or significant size increase. For 2 x 2 silicon-based thermo-optic switches, the measured polarization-dependent losses (PDLs) in both CROSS and BAR states were less than 0.4 dB at a wavelength of 1315 nm. Ranging from 1309 to 1339 nm, the PDLs were less than 0.9 dB. A 4 x 4 optical switch was also experimentally demonstrated, whose PDLs for all routing paths in all BAR and CROSS states were less than 1.2 dB at a wavelength of 1334 nm. This method can potentially be used to construct polarization-insensitive on-chip integrated photonic systems for applications in fields such as optical communications and optical interconnections.

Abstract:Silicon-based optical switch is one of the key components for on-chip optical interconnect systems, and mode division multiplexing technology has been employed to boost optical switches' channel capacity. However, the majority of the proven multimode optical switches have a switching time in the microsecond range, which is insufficient for some applications. In this paper, we design and experimentally demonstrate a high-speed dual-mode 4 × 4 optical switch based on a mode-diversity scheme, composed of four pairs of mode multiplexers and de-multiplexers, and two optimized single-mode 4 × 4 optical switches. Fast switching is enabled based on the carrier dispersion effect. At the same time, we improve the performances of the optical switch by reducing the number of optical switch units used in the 4 × 4 Spanke–Beneš architecture. Its power consumptions are reduced by ∼17%. Its insertion losses are within 8.8 dB in the wavelength range of 1525–1565 nm in the both sates of "through" and "all-cross", while the optical signal-to-noise ratios are larger than 12.8 dB. Also, 50 Gbps data transmission experiments verify the device's data transmission functionality.

Compact All-Optical Switches Based on Photon-Induced Suppression of Mode Interference

Abstract:An optically activated optical switch based on suppression of mode interference (SMI) is presented. The imaging properties of multi-mode interference (MMI) section in the switch with Y-branch can be modified by a controlling light injection. The switch was simulated by finite difference beam propagation method (FD-BPM) and fabricated on GaAlAs/GaAs epitaxial materials. At the wavelength of 1.31 um, the primary experiment showed an extinction ratio of about 8 dB with controlling light power density of 73.5 W/mm2.

Abstract:Mode division multiplexing (MDM) technology, based on the parallelism inherent in mode dimensions, provides an advancement in enhancing on-chip optical communication channel capacity. In MDM communication systems, the routing and switching of optical signals are of essential importance. However, conventional multimode optical switches typically follow the demultiplexing-processing-multiplexing technological route, leading to an unavoidable increase in device size. In scenarios where multiple modes need to be routed synchronously, the implementation of simultaneous modulation optical switches offers a more efficient and feasible solution. Here, we propose two 1×2 dual-mode optical switches with simultaneous modulation on a silicon-on-insulator (SOI) platform in the 1525-1565 nm wavelength range, utilizing two optical phase modulation techniques: mode transformation and waveguide widening. Simultaneously, we employ inverse design methodologies based on the adjoint variable method (AVM) and level-set method to create the compact single-connected devices, which are compatible with CMOS fabrication processes. The experimental results show that the insertion losses for both TE0 and TE1 modes are less than 1.6 dB (2.5 dB), with the worst modal crosstalk at most -13.5 dB (-12.7 dB) for the switch based on mode transformation (waveguide widening) strategy at the wavelength of 1550nm. The extinction ratio (ER) of the two proposed optical switches exceeds 25 dB at the same wavelength. Furthermore, the switches exhibit a 10%-90% rise time of 15.2 μs and a 90%-10% fall time of 19.5 μs at 1550 nm, indicating the switching speed can be up to kilohertz (kHz). Our proposed 1×2 optical switches hold potential as a fundamental unit for optical signal switching in high-integration multimode optical communication systems.

Abstract:We report on an experimental 3 x 3 thermo-optical switch on silicon on insulator. By controlling a single combined phase shifter, light from any input waveguide can be directed to any output waveguide, showing a simple control method and highly integrated structure as compared to the conventional multiway optical switches. Furthermore, the proposed optical switch can be generalized to be a 1 x N and N x N optical switch without an extra phase shifter. The switch is fabricated by complementary metal oxide semiconductor technology. By experiment, full 3 x 3 switching functionality is demonstrated at a wavelength of 1.55 mu m, with an average cross talk of -11.1 dB and a power consumption of 97.5 mW. Abstract:A novel optical switch structure is proposed to implement the function of cross-connection, optical power control and crosstalk reduction for optical cross-connect (OXC) in wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) optical transport networks. Based on the conventional AS/AC network structure, the proposed one deploys a set of 1x2 digital optical switches (DOS) between the AS and AC modules. Thus the optical signal power can be controlled and the crosstalk can be reduced by adjusting the driving voltage of the 1x2 DOSS. Experiments with a 4x4 polymeric thermo-optical DOS demonstrate that the power control range is more than 35 dB, and the delay for 3 dB power control is within 7.5 ms in the worst case. Analytical result also shows that the crosstalk can be suppressed at least 35 dB.

Abstract:By employing the self-imaging properties of multimode interference, a 1 × 3 optical switch with mono-compound modulation region is presented. When at different switching states, a multiple relation exists in the acquired modulation magnitudes in the connecting arms, and therefore, the phase shifters in the arms can compose a mono-compound modulation region (MCMR). By continuously changing the refractive indices in the MCMR, light incident from any input port can be switched alternatively to arbitrary output port. Based on Al0.07Ga0.93As/GaAs ridge structure, the proposed device was optimized and theoretically demonstrated by employing BEAMPROP software. The extinction ratio is as high as 30.3 dB. The crosstalk between adjacent channels is less than -29.8 dB. In a wide spectral range (-50 nm) around 1.31μm wavelength, the crosstalk keeps lower than -20 dB. This device may greatly simplify the modulating scheme of traditionaly multichannel switch and relax the complextity of external controlling.

Abstract:We propose and demonstrate a 1 x 2 thermooptic digital optical switch with variable optical attenuators that are integrated with the S-bend waveguides connecting the output of the Y-switch with a standard fiber array. With a total heating power of 140 mW applied to the switch, we have achieved less than -42-dB optical crosstalk. The wavelength response of the switch is flat across the entire C-band. The average polarization-dependent loss of the switch is about 0.49 dB.

Abstract:A high-speed compact silicon digital optical switch (DOS) is proposed in this paper. The direct electro-optic effect is applied by filling electro-optic polymer in the void slot of the branches, which compensates the limitation of silicon itself. The crosstalk of about 35dB and the insertion loss of 0.7dB is obtained, the switching speed is less than 1ps, and the whole device length can be shortened to 616μm even using the basic mode-evolving principle and a simple Y-type structure. Analysis also shows that the device has good fabrication tolerance and wavelength independence over the C-band.

Abstract:We present a polymer Y-branching digital thermo-optic switch with which a variable optical attenuator is integrated. Without any structural extend of the device, it can realize low insertion loss and wide branching angle. By optimizing the design of Y-branching area, a wide-angle low loss Y-branch can be realized. With an applied electrical power of 120 mW, it has a low insertion loss of 0.5 dB and a low crosstalk of -40 dB at 1.55 μm. The polymer digital optical switch (DOS) is attractive in practice due to its compact size, low insertion loss and low power consumption. In addition, it shows good polarization independence and good stability.

Abstract:On-chip optical communications are growingly aiming at multimode operation together with mode-division multiplexing to further increase the transmission capacity.Optical switches,which are capable of optical signals switching at the nodes,play a key role in optical networks.We demonstrate a 2×2 electro-optic Mach–Zehnder interferometer-based mode-and polarization-selective switch fabricated by standard complementary metal–oxide–semiconductor process.An electro optic tuner based on a PN-doped junction in one of the Mach–Zehnder interferometer arms enables dynamic switching in 11 ns.For all the channels,the overall insertion losses and inter-modal crosstalk values are below 9.03 and–15.86 dB at 1550 nm,respectively.

Abstract:A broadband thermo-optic 2 x 2 Mach-Zehnder switch that can control two spatial modes simultaneously on a silicon chip is demonstrated in this Letter. A broadband multimode 3 dB coupler is first realized based on symmetrically coupled waveguides with a sub-wavelength structure. The length of the coupler is only 24.2 mu m. By employing such a multimode 3 dB coupler together with symmetrical delay arms, an optical switching functionality is realized experimentally with excess losses less than 1.3 dB and crosstalks less than -15 dB over a 60 nm bandwidth for the two spatial modes. An arbitrary splitting ratio at two output ports for the two modes simultaneously is also demonstrated when applying different currents on the heater. (C) 2019 Optical Society of America
