Abstract:The testing platform that applies to physical simulation testing for satellite attitude control requires an extremely small frictional resistance moment.However,the aerostatic bearing can just meet this challenge.A single-shaft air-floating platform was designed for a Picosat's physical simulation.The measured frictional resistance moment of the platform is 5×10~(-5)N·m which meets the specification. The key technical problem on air-floating platform was discussed.

Abstract:A micro flying slider is developed to satisfy the demands for large capacity, high data density, and fast transfer rate of mass storage systems. The air-bearing surface of the micro flying slider is designed based on micro fluid theory of hydrodynamics to obtain positive and negative pressures, thereby enhancing flying height stability. The lubrication model is investigated based on the generalized Reynolds equation. The finite volume method is utilized to solve the revised Reynolds equation that governs the air-bearing pressure and flying system behavior. The dynamic model for the slider–disk interface of the micro flying slider is developed, and the air-bearing system is modeled as a 3-degrees-of-freedom, lumped-parameter model to simulate flying characteristics. The air-bearing pressures with flying attitudes in the loading/unloading processes are characterized and calculated using the proposed model, with flying height and pitch angle as the key variables. The sample data obtained via accurate triggering and superposed averaging are processed to acquire modal frequencies and damping ratios based on the parameter identification method of modal analysis technique. System experiments are presented to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed micro flying slider and its dynamic model for flying-height control. Theoretical analysis and experimental results show that a stable storage working process can be obtained at 1600 rpm and a pitch angle of 1.5°. Moreover, the micro flying slider exhibits satisfactory flying stability, with a near-field working distance of less than 75 nm. Good correlation between the experimental and simulation results is achieved.

Abstract:With the further increase of the magnetic storage density of hard disk, flying height of sliders has to decrease down to 5nm in the near future. To ensure that the working flying height is coincident with the design goal, it is crucial to measure the flying height of a slider design during the development of new sliders. The manufacturing of real sliders requires specific materials, processes and equipment. For the purpose of flying height test, however, real sliders are not necessary, some substitutions can meet the experiment demands as long as the shape and size of the substitutions are same as those of real ones. In this article, fabrication of sliders with silicon wafer, which is the most common substrate used in microsystems, is introduced. The problems in mask design, slider fabrication and dicing are discussed. Some principal air bearing surface parameters of the self-made silicon sliders are measured. The flying characteristics of the silicon sliders is tested on a stand-alone tester with the laser heterodyne interferometry method. The test results coincide well with the simulation results. The research results indicate that the self made silicon sliders can be used as the substitutions of real sliders for flying height testing, providing a simple approach which can greatly save the costs and time for preparation of slider samples.

Abstract:The requirement of higher storage density in hard disk drives is pushing the head-to-media spacing(HMS) to become ever smaller. Currently, thermal protrusion at the transducer that is realized by the heating element in dynamic fly-height(DFH) sliders can be used to control the HMS by applying controllable electrical power. Thus, just how low the slider can fly stably and reliably using the DFH technology is a major concern for the hard-drive industry. This article describes a test for evaluating the flyability and durability of the head–disk interface(HDI) at desired and ultrasmall clearance using DFH sliders. Through such a test, the HDI flyability and durability at 1-nm clearance were examined using commercial DFH sliders with two specially designed air-bearing surfaces(ABSs). The possibility of stable and durable on-track flying at 1-nm clearance for optimized DFH sliders was demonstrated in an ambient environment.

Abstract:The clearance between slider and disk needs to be reduced to increase optical and magnetic storage system storage densities. Based on the revised Reynolds equation, a program, AirSlider, was developed with VC6.0 to simulate the air slider read-write head. The Fukui-Kaneko model, Patankar finite volume method, and rectangle grids were used to compute the air pressure. A line-by-line arithmetic was employed to achieve high convergence speed. The software can be used to simulate all kinds of sliders currently used in the hard disk and optical disk industries. The simulation results agree well with measurements with an error of ±3% for the SIL and TPC sliders.

Abstract:As dynamic fly-height (DFH) sliders with active flying-height (FH) control using local thermal expansion caused by a heating element were introduced in hard disk drives recently, the minimum clearance between the head and disk has been reduced to sub-3-nm. To achieve a higher recording density, the clearance will have to become even smaller, which will make the slider more likely to contact the disk and thus may cause head-disk interface (HDI) instability and slider/disk wear. This paper describes a test to study the flyability and durability of the DFH sliders at sub-1-nm clearance. The test involves the DFH sliders flying for a series of durations at 1 and 0.5 nm clearances. The sub-1-nm clearance was achieved by making the pole-tip protrusion back off 1 or 0.5 nm immediately after an initial touchdown. During flying, the acoustic emission and friction signals were monitored to investigate the slider flyability. The HDI durability was evaluated by inspecting the lube pickup on the slider air-bearing surface, carbon wear of the sliders and disks, and lubricant modulation/depletion using optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and an optical surface analyzer, respectively, after each test. Finally, the possibility of stable on-track flying of the optimized DFH sliders at 1-nm clearance was demonstrated.

Abstract:The methods of design and fabrication of head sliders are discussed in this paper. The structures and design methods of head sliders are analysed,and the micro-fabrication of a head slider has been completed in term of the methods and equipment of lithography and dry etching. 3D surface microstructures of the head slider fabricated with the dry etching are measured on a Vecco MHT-III interferometer,and the analysis results are shown.

Abstract:The demands for surface impedance vary when it comes to traveling wave diffraction and specular reflection suppression in absorbing structures across a broad frequency range. To address these conflicting requirements, a composite structure of Frequency Selective Surface and Area Coated Honeycomb (FSS-ACH) structure is developed herein via surface impedance modulation. This structure enables effective suppression of both types of scattering. Simulation results show that the proposed absorber achieves a monostatic radar cross section reduction of more than -10 dB at normal incidence within the frequency range of 2-10 GHz. Additionally, the first traveling wave lobe is reduced by more than 10 dB for TM polarization at grazing incidence. To validate the proposed design method, samples were fabricated and measured in an anechoic chamber. The obtained measurement outcomes closely corresponded with the simulated results, thus providing solid confirmation of the efficacy of the proposed design approach.

Abstract:In ultra-high frequency (UHF) band, conventional microwave absorbers are limited in application by their thickness or weight. In order to solve this problem, a novel double-sided and dual-tuned active frequency selective surface (AFSS) absorber for the UHF band is designed and implemented for the first time. The physical mechanism is analyzed by the equivalent circuit method (ECM) and current distribution. Non-coplanar bias circuits of p-i-n diodes and varactors are proposed and achieved by a double-sided structure. The Fano resonance introduced by double-sided structure is analyzed and suppressed. The proposed structure covers an ultrabroadband of 0.4-2.5 GHz (144.8% in fractional bandwidth) below -10 dB by changing the working states. The thickness is only λ L /30 in the lowest operating frequency, and the areal density is only 1.54 kg/m 2 . It is worth mentioning that the structure has good angular sensitivity and can be used to complex targets for low-RCS applications.
Flexural wave modulation and mitigation in airfoils using acoustic black holes

Abstract:This study introduces a framework for the design and implementation of acoustic black holes (ABHs) in airfoils. A generalized multi-parameter damped-ABH generation function is mapped onto NACA series airfoils. Representative geometries and a uniformly distributed baseline, all with the same mass of structure and damping are fabricated using multi-material PolyJet 3D printing. Laser Doppler vibrometer measurements along the airfoil chord in response to a broadband 0.1 - 12 kHz excitation show a decrease in trailing edge vibrations by as much as 10 dB, a broadband 5 dB reduction across the entire chord as well as substantial spatial and temporal modulation of flexural waves by ABH-embedded foils. Finite element analysis (FEA) models are developed and validated based on the measured data. Furthermore, a parametric FEA study is performed on a set of comparable designs to elucidate the scope of modulation achievable. These findings are applicable to trailing-edge noise reduction, flow control, structural enhancement and energy harvesting for airfoils.

Abstract:In this communication, wide-angle monostatic radar cross section (RCS) reduction of a metal plate is reported. The whole angular range (0°–90°) is divided into three parts according to the different dominant scattering mechanisms. Each dominant scattering mechanism is accurately identified and suppressed effectively. Frequency selective surface (FSS) absorber is employed to reduce the specular echo intensity within the first angular part. The tapered resistive sheets (TRSs) are loading as an edge termination to the metal layer and FSS layer, respectively, providing a slowly varying surface current to taper the transition between the free space and the targets. Significant RCS reduction in the rest two angular parts is achieved. Simulation results clearly show that more than 10 dB monostatic RCS reduction is realized within a wide angular range (0°–10° and 30°–85°) for the frequency band ranging from 1.3 to 2 GHz. Samples have been fabricated and measured in the anechoic chamber, and a remarkable agreement between the simulation and measurement is obtained. The effectiveness of the design is fully verified.

Abstract:The objective of this Paper is to carry out a case study in finding an optimal combination of design, material designation and geometry modification of the flywheel which results in increasing the overall energy storing capacity of the flywheel. The geometrical design of the flywheel and the material of the flywheel are the considered variables here. Optimum flywheel is chosen on the basis of weight, energy density, energy storing capacity and specific energy of the flywheel. Considering the amount of variables and results, for better selection of the flywheel design a (DOE) Design of Experiments is chosen along with using Finite Element Analysis. Using both these approaches the best possible flywheel is obtained for better energy storage.

Abstract:This paper presents the methodology for the design and control of a high-stiffness fast tool servo (FTS) system for practical application in diamond machining of freeform surfaces. The electromechanical model of the FTS system is established by combining the piezoelectric actuator and the flexure hinge mechanism for the formulation of the control methodology. In order to accommodate the system nonlinearity, cutting force disturbances as well as to realize fast and accurate tracking of designated tool path required for diamond machining of freeform surfaces, a novel adaptive terminal sliding mode (NATS) control strategy capable of online self-tuning of the system gain and reach time related parameters are developed. Stability analysis of the proposed NATS controller is performed. The convergence behavior of tracking error in the presence of model parameter variations and cutting force disturbance is analyzed. Experimental verification was conducted to validate the effectiveness and robustness of the NATS control. By comparing with other related control methods, it shows significantly improved performance. The percentage of tracking error was only 0.1% for the varying trajectories on machining water-drop surface. Taking advantage of the excellent tracking performances of the FTS prototype on a diamond turning machine, various freeform surfaces were successfully produced with high quality.
Measurement and Suppression of Slider In-Plane Motion

Abstract:In order to position the read/write elements more precisely, the in-plane motion of a flying slider was investigated experimentally. After the spindle and the slider load/unload device were kept apart, a laser Doppler vibrometer was used to measure the in-plane motion of the slider and the disk runout, and then the results were analyzed in frequency domain in the form of amplitude spectrum. The correlation between the in-plane motion of the slider and the disk runout was also discussed. As the results indicate, the in-plane motion of the slider is mainly caused by and thus has positive correlation with disk runout. The amplitude of the offtrack in-plane motion was decreased from 140.6 nm to 59.1 nm when the runout amplitude was reduced from 6.9624 μm to 3.3330 μm. By suppressing the disk runout, the offtrack motion of the slider can be suppressed effectively, which is beneficial for improving the precision of positioning the slider.

Abstract:Frequency-amplitude character for magnetic head/disk was investigated when flying height of slider is below 10 nm. Mathematical model was derived based on Reynolds equation and dynamic ones for gas lubrication with consideration of velocity-slip effect. Then, numerical analysis was carried out with perturbation method. It is found that the perturbation has significant influence on the slider attitude, the dynamic flying-height amplitude and film rigidity increase greatly, when the perturbation frequency approaches to or gets higher than that of the slider. And the height amplitude and rigidity increase with the decreasing flying height, when the perturbation frequency is close to that of the slider. So the dynamic flying-height amplitude can be under control by the means of increasing the slider characteristic frequency much higher than that of the perturbation in slider design.

Abstract:To achieve 50nm flying height and accuracy tracking motion, it is essential to reduce the whole size of optical flying head (OFH) to improve mechanical and optical performance. With a view to the practical applicability, a novel integrated OFH based on the combination of SIL and objective lens (OL) is proposed, which possesses both high optical performance and reasonable tolerance in assembly. In addition, the fabrication process of this OFH is illustrated in detail. Finally, the main parameters of ABS for OFH slider are presented by means of numerical simulation. The simulation result demonstrates that the flying height of the integrated OFH slider can keep stable from 43nm to 44nm at different radium of optical disk, which can yield high signal/noise ratio optical signal during the read/write motion in near field recording (NFR) system.

Abstract:Optimum topology design of sliders is one of the main methods for improving the storage density of hard disk.At present,the optimization methods of slider topology design include the topology optimization method and dimension optimization method.Both of the two methods have their own advantages and disadvantages.In this article,the two methods were combined together to compensate their disadvantages.The structure of the slider was also refined during the optimization to meet the requirement of practical application.Because it was aimed to design the flying height of less than 5 nm,intermolecular force was also taken into consideration.The simulation results show that the optimized slider exhibited good flying characteristics.

Abstract:A double common-path differential heterodyne interferometer is proposed to measure the flying height modulation (FHM) of a slider in a hard disk drive. A transverse Zeeman He-Ne laser is employed as the light source and high-speed phase measurement is applied for signal processing. The resolution and the sampling frequency of FH measurement are 0.1 nm and 500 kHz, respectively. According to the symmetrical optical path design, the environmental noise and Abbe error from the disk can be adaptively compensated. The experimental results show that the stability of the system is sub-nanometer in a normal laboratory without air conditioning, and the FHM of +/- 3 nm is achieved when the pitch of the rotating disk is around 1.2 mu m.

Abstract:In this article, a floating robotic emulation platform for a virtual demonstration of satellite motion in space is presented. The robotic platform design is characterized by its friction-less, levitating, yet planar motion over a hyper-smooth surface. The robotic platform, integrated with sensor and actuator units, is fully designed and manufactured from the Robotics and Artificial Intelligence Team at Lule\aa\ University of Technology. A detailed design description along with the mathematical modeling describing the platform's dynamic motion is formulated. Finally, the proposed design is validated in extensive simulation studies, while the overall test bed experimental setup, as well as the vehicle hardware and software architectures, are discussed in detail. Furthermore, the entire design, including 3D printing CAD model and different testbed elements, is provided in an open-source repository and a test campaign is used to showcase its capabilities and illustrate its operations.

Abstract:To ensure the aerodynamic performance of the slat in aircraft when retracted, it is necessary to set rubber seals in the seam between the leading-edge slat and the fixed leading edge. However, the extrusion and friction of the seal will induce the increment frictional loading on the slat driver. In the present Paper, a rigid-flexible body configuration model of the increment frictional loading was proposed based on multibody dynamics and theory of elasticity, and the increment frictional loading caused by the slat seal was calculated and analyzed. Besides, the influences of friction coefficient and temperature on the incremental frictional loading were investigated. The results will provide a guidance reference in simulation analysis and experimental verification methods for designing the slat seals in aircraft.
