Abstract:Measurements of the intensity transfer function of a silica microfiber resonator are shown to follow a wide variety of hysteresis cycles, depending on the cavity detuning and the scanning frequency of the range of input powers. We attribute these observations to a nonlinear phase shift of thermal origin and provide a simple model that reproduces well our measurements. The response time is found to be around 0.6 ms.

Abstract:In this paper, a resonant system is demonstrated on silicon-on-insulator wafer to achieve tunable Fano resonances. In this system, the Fano resonance originates from the interference of two beams resonant in the microring resonator. The shapes of the Fano resonances are tunable through controlling the phase difference of the two beams. Both large slope and high extinction ratio (ER) are obtained when the phase difference is 0.5π or 1.5π. Experimental results show that Fano resonances with steep slope and ER over 20 dB are achieved in the whole free spectral range by controlling the microheaters to meet the phase condition.

Abstract:Based on low-loss fusion splicing of microfibers using a CO laser, we demonstrate free-standing microfiber closed-loop resonators. Loaded Q-factors of 110 500 with a finesse of 15.3 are obtained around 1.5-mu m wavelength in a 2.4-mm-diameter closed-loop resonator suspended in air. The possibility of tuning resonant responses by changing the coupling efficiency is also demonstrated.

Abstract:We systematically investigate the optical effects and the optical functions of coupling-modulated microring resonators (CMR) based on interleaved p-n junctions. The optical effect of coupling-induced frequency shifts (CIFS) is firstly observed experimentally. Due to the CIFS and thermal-optical effect, the resonance spacing is tuned as large as 0.182 nm (corresponding to 22.8 GHz), the extinction ratio is continuously modulated between 0 dB to as large as 35 dB.

Abstract:Recent investigations of microcavity frequency combs based on cascaded four-wave mixing have revealed a link between the evolution of the optical spectrum and the observed temporal coherence. Here we study a silicon nitride microresonator for which the initial four-wave mixing sidebands are spaced by multiple free spectral ranges (FSRs) from the pump, then fill in to yield a comb with single FSR spacing, resulting in partial coherence. By using a pulse shaper to select and manipulate the phase of various subsets of spectral lines, we are able to probe the structure of the coherence within the partially coherent comb. Our data demonstrate strong variation in the degree of mutual coherence between different groups of lines and provide support for a simple model of partially coherent comb formation.

Abstract:We suggest a scheme to manipulate the generation dynamics of high-Q microresonator-based frequency combs (microcombs). Our simulation demonstrates that a certain subfamily of comb teeth can be suppressed via selectively filtering out limited modes, from which high-quality mode-locked pulses can be generated. Mode-pulling in microcomb generation is also analyzed quantitatively to explain the results. These results can help us better understand microcomb generation dynamics and will be beneficial in controlling the generated comb line number and spacing.

Abstract:Microresonator based Kerr frequency comb generation has many attractive features, including ultrabroad spectra, chip-level integration, and low power consumption. Achieving precise tuning control over the comb frequencies will be important for a number of practical applications, but has been little explored for microresonator combs. In this paper, we characterize the thermal tuning of a coherent Kerr frequency comb generated from an on-chip silicon nitride microring. When the microring temperature is changed by similar to 70 degrees C with an integrated microheater, the line spacing and center frequency of the comb are tuned respectively by -253 MHz (-3.57 MHz/degrees C) and by -175 GHz (-2.63 GHz/degrees C); the latter constitutes 75% of the comb line spacing. From these results we obtain a shift of 25 GHz (362.07 MHz/degrees C) in the comb carrier-envelope offset frequency. Numerical simulations are performed by taking into account the thermo-optic effects in the waveguide core and cladding. The temperature variation of the comb line spacing predicted from simulations is close to that observed in experiments. The time-dependent thermal response of the microheater based tuning scheme is characterized; time constants of 30.9 mu s and 0.71ms are observed. (C) 2015 Optical Society of America

Abstract:We generate Kerr frequency combs in a synchronously-driven silica microring resonator. Driving at integer (and fractional) multiples of the cavity free-spectral-range, we obtain soliton microcombs with adjustable comb spacings between 3.2 and 19.2 GHz.

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrate resonance-splitting and enhanced notch as a result of the mutual mode coupling in silicon ring resonator. Dense wavelength conversions, wavelength multicasting and optical up-converter are demonstrated in the split silicon ring resonator. A temporal differentiator and format conversion from NRZ to AMI are demonstrated utilizing the filtering effect of ring resonator. Photonic phase shifter and delay line are demonstrated utilizing the phase shift of ring resonator.

Abstract:Optical frequency comb based on microresonator (microcomb) is an integrated coherent light source and has the potential to promise a high-precision frequency standard, and self-reference and long-term stable microcomb is the key to this realization. Here, we demonstrated a 0.7-octave spectrum Kerr comb via dispersion engineering in a thin film lithium niobate microresonator, and the single soliton state can be accessed passively with long-term stability over 3 hours. With such a robust broadband coherent comb source using thin film lithium niobate, fully stabilized microcomb can be expected for massive practical applications.

Abstract:We experimentally investigate the resonant response in a microsphere coupled with a biconical microfiber coupler (MFC) composed of single- and/or few-mode fibers. The evolution between Lorentz and Fano resonances dependent on the phase difference of the supermodes is demonstrated along the coupling region of the MFC. A flexible narrow-linewidth add-drop filter can be simultaneously achieved with the advantage of easy alignment and efficiently evanescent coupling. In addition, the mode conversion process of the microsphere is demonstrated, and the purity of the LP11 mode in a coupler at the whispering gallery mode resonance is analyzed. The proposed MFC coupling system holds great promising applications in optical filtering and sensing, mode switching, and micro-resonator-based combs.

Abstract:A nested ring resonator structure has been devised on a silicon-on-insulator platform, incorporating a feedback path through the addition of a port to the device. This design selectively enhances resonant wavelengths while effectively suppressing numerous consecutive resonant wavelengths by ∼30 dB. Consequently, it significantly expands the free spectral range (FSR) by over 85 nm, exceeding 20 times the FSR achieved without the feedback path. The resonant peak wavelength can be tuned by ∼40 nm/μm change in the feedback path, offering a broader range for refractive index sensing. The impact of the additional phase control parameter length in the feedback path was investigated. Theoretical analysis was followed by finite differential time domain simulations to validate the results. Various device parameters were systematically adjusted to observe a substantial increase in the FSR and improved controllability over peak transmission.

Abstract:Automatic resonance alignment tuning is performed in high-order series coupled microring filters using a feedback system. By inputting only a reference wavelength, the filter transmission is maximized on resonance, passband ripples are dramatically reduced, and the passband becomes centered at the reference. The method is tested on fifth-order microring filters fabricated in a standard silicon photonics foundry process. Repeatable tuning is demonstrated for filters on multiple dies from the wafer and for arbitrary reference wavelengths within the free spectral range of the microrings.
