Abstract:Simultaneous second-harmonic generation in microresonator-based Kerr optical frequency combs (microcombs) can potentially facilitate on-chip comb self-referencing for optical frequency metrology. Moreover, the participation of second-order nonlinearity may affect the comb self-starting and modelocking behaviors, resulting in complex dynamics that is still far from well understood. Here, we report on both experimental and theoretical investigations on the interaction dynamics between the fundamental and second-harmonic waves in microcomb generation. We show that the nonlinear dynamics governed by the third-order nonlinearity can be significantly altered by the nonlinear mode coupling. Specifically, we demonstrate that second-harmonic mode coupling can provide an entirely new way of fulfilling phase-matching for four-wave mixing in the normal dispersion regime, where comb creation is prohibited in the absence of mode coupling. We derive coupled time-domain meanfield equations to model the comb dynamics in microresonators with simultaneous second-and thirdorder nonlinearities. The numerical simulation results show excellent agreement with our experimental observations. We expect our findings will have a wide impact on the study of nonlinear cavity dynamics with interacting second-and third-order nonlinearities, and will enable new mechanisms for reliable high-performance microcombs.

Abstract:Kerr frequency combs generated from microresonators are the subject of intense study for potential applications ranging from short pulse generation to frequency metrology to radiofrequency signal processing. Most research employs microresonators with anomalous dispersion, for which modulation instability is believed to play a key role in initiation of the comb. Comb generation in normal-dispersion microresonators has also been reported but is less well understood. Here, we report a detailed investigation of few-moded, normal-dispersion silicon nitride microresonators, showing that mode coupling can strongly modify the local dispersion, even changing its sign. We demonstrate a link between mode coupling and initiation of comb generation by showing experimentally the pinning of one of the initial comb sidebands near a mode-crossing frequency. Associated with this route to comb formation, we observe direct generation of coherent, bandwidth-limited pulses at repetition rates down to 75 GHz, without the need to first pass through a chaotic state. Our results with normal-dispersion devices highlight mode interactions as a beneficial tool for comb initiation and pulse formation. (C) 2014 Optical Society of America

Abstract:We demonstrate a scheme incorporating dual‐coupled microresonators through which mode interactions are intentionally introduced and controlled for Kerr frequency comb (microcomb) generation in the normal‐dispersion region. Microcomb generation, repetition rate selection, and mode locking are achieved with coupled silicon nitride microrings controlled via an on‐chip microheater. The proposed scheme shows for the first time a reliable design strategy for normal‐dispersion microcombs and may make it possible to generate microcombs in an extended wavelength range (e.g. in the visible) where normal material dispersion is likely to dominate. Microcomb generation, repetition rate selection, and mode locking are achieved with coupled silicon nitride microrings constructed from single‐mode waveguides. Mode interactions are controlled via an on‐chip microheater for reliable microcomb initiation. Abstract:Generation of nonlinear frequency combs in χ(3) optical microresonators has attracted tremendous research interest during the last decade. Recently, realization of the microcomb owing to χ(2) optical nonlinearity in the microresonator promises new breakthroughs and is a big scientific challenge. Moreover, it is of high scientific interest that the presence of both second- and third-order nonlinearities results in complex cavity dynamics. In particular, the role of χ(3) nonlinearity in the generation of the quadratic microcomb is still far from being well understood. Here, we demonstrate the interaction between the second- and third-order nonlinearity in the lithium niobate microresonator, which can provide a new way of phase matching to control the mode-locking condition and pulse number for the quadratic microcomb. Our results verify that the Kerr nonlinearity can benefit the quadratic microcomb. The principle can be further extended to other material platforms to provide more manipulation methods for comb generation based on χ(2) nonlinearity at mid-infrared.

Abstract:Optical microresonator-based Kerr frequency comb generation has developed into a hot research area in the past decade. Microresonator combs are promising for portable applications due to their potential for chip-level integration and low power consumption. According to the group velocity dispersion of the microresonator employed, research in this field may be classified into two categories: the anomalous dispersion regime and the normal dispersion regime. In this paper, we discuss the physics of Kerr comb generation in the normal dispersion regime and review recent experimental advances. The potential advantages and future directions of normal dispersion combs are also discussed.

The properties of the combs generated depend crucially on the interaction between nonlinearity and dispersion. Abstract:The generation of Kerr frequency combs in a coherently driven nonlinear microresonator is now extensively investigated more generally by the research community as a potentially portable technology for a variety of applications. Here, we report experiments in which dark pulse combs are formed in normal-dispersion microresonators with mode-interaction-assisted excitation, and mode-locking transitions are observed in the normal-dispersion regime. The mode-interaction-aided excitation of dark pulses appears to occur through a deterministic pathway, in sharp contrast to the situation for bright pulses in the anomalous dispersion region. The ability to mode-lock in the normal-dispersion regime increases the freedom in the microresonator design and may make it possible to extend Kerr comb generation into the visible, where material dispersion is likely to dominate.

Abstract:The nonlinear interaction of a microresonator pumped by a laser has revealed complex dynamics including soliton formation and chaos. Initial studies of coupled-resonator systems reveal even more complicated dynamics that can lead to deterministic modelocking and efficient comb generation. Here we perform theoretical analysis and experiments that provide insight into the dynamical behavior of coupled-resonator systems operating in the normal group-velocity-dispersion regime. Our stability analysis and simulations reveal that the strong mode-coupling regime, which gives rise to spectrally-broad comb states, can lead to an instability mechanism in the auxiliary resonator that destabilizes the comb state and prevents mode-locking. We find that this instability can be suppressed by introducing loss in the auxiliary resonator. We investigate the stability of both single- and multi-pulse solutions and verify our theoretical predictions by performing experiments in a silicon-nitride platform. Our results provide an understanding for accessing broad, efficient, relatively flat high-power mode-locked combs for numerous applications in spectroscopy, time-frequency metrology, and data communications.

Abstract:We suggest a scheme to manipulate the generation dynamics of high-Q microresonator-based frequency combs (microcombs). Our simulation demonstrates that a certain subfamily of comb teeth can be suppressed via selectively filtering out limited modes, from which high-quality mode-locked pulses can be generated. Mode-pulling in microcomb generation is also analyzed quantitatively to explain the results. These results can help us better understand microcomb generation dynamics and will be beneficial in controlling the generated comb line number and spacing.

Abstract:Optical frequency combs allow for precise measurement of optical frequencies and are used in a growing number of applications beyond spectroscopy and optical frequency metrology. A class of compact microresonator based frequency comb generators has emerged recently based on (hyper)-parametric frequency conversion, mediated by the Kerr-non-linearity, of a continuous wave laser beam. Despite the rapid progress and the emergence of a wide variety of micro-resonator Kerr-comb platforms, an understanding of the dynamics of the Kerr comb formation is still lacking. In particular the question in which regime low phase noise performance can be achieved has so far not been answered but is of critical importance for future application of this technology. Here an universal, platform independent understanding of the Kerr-comb formation dynamics based on experimental observations in crystalline MgF2 and planar Si3N4 comb generators is given. This explains a wide range of hereto not understood phenomena and reveals for the first time the underlying condition for low phase noise performance.

Abstract:Microresonator Kerr frequency combs could provide miniaturised solutions for a wide range of applications. Many of these applications however require further manipulation of the generated frequency comb signal using photonic elements with strong second-order nonlinearity (χ(2)). To date these functionalities have largely been implemented as discrete components due to material limitations, which comes at the expense of extra system complexity and increased optical losses. Here we demonstrate the generation, filtering and electro-optic modulation of a frequency comb on a single monolithic integrated chip, using a nanophotonic lithium-niobate platform that simultaneously possesses large electro-optic (χ(2)) and Kerr (χ(3)) nonlinearities, and low optical losses. We generate broadband Kerr frequency combs using a dispersion-engineered high-Q lithium-niobate microresonator, select a single comb line using an electrically programmable add-drop filter, and modulate the intensity of the selected line. Our results pave the way towards monolithic integrated frequency comb solutions for spectroscopy, data communication, ranging and quantum photonics.

Here, we demonstrate that the interaction between the fundamental and the second-harmonic waves can provide an entirely new way of phase matching for four-wave mixing in optical microresonators, enabling the generation of optical frequency combs in the normal dispersion regime under conditions where comb creation is ordinarily prohibited. We derive new coupled time-domain mean-field equations and obtain simulation results showing good qualitative agreement with our experimental observations. Our findings provide a novel way of overcoming the dispersion limit for simultaneous Kerr comb formation and second-harmonic generation, which might prove to be especially important in the near-visible to visible range where several atomic transitions commonly used for the stabilization of optical clocks are located and where the large normal material dispersion is likely to dominate.
