Abstract:Simultaneous second-harmonic generation in microresonator-based Kerr optical frequency combs (microcombs) can potentially facilitate on-chip comb self-referencing for optical frequency metrology. Moreover, the participation of second-order nonlinearity may affect the comb self-starting and modelocking behaviors, resulting in complex dynamics that is still far from well understood. Here, we report on both experimental and theoretical investigations on the interaction dynamics between the fundamental and second-harmonic waves in microcomb generation. We show that the nonlinear dynamics governed by the third-order nonlinearity can be significantly altered by the nonlinear mode coupling. Specifically, we demonstrate that second-harmonic mode coupling can provide an entirely new way of fulfilling phase-matching for four-wave mixing in the normal dispersion regime, where comb creation is prohibited in the absence of mode coupling. We derive coupled time-domain meanfield equations to model the comb dynamics in microresonators with simultaneous second-and thirdorder nonlinearities. The numerical simulation results show excellent agreement with our experimental observations. We expect our findings will have a wide impact on the study of nonlinear cavity dynamics with interacting second-and third-order nonlinearities, and will enable new mechanisms for reliable high-performance microcombs.

Abstract:Generation of nonlinear frequency combs in χ(3) optical microresonators has attracted tremendous research interest during the last decade. Recently, realization of the microcomb owing to χ(2) optical nonlinearity in the microresonator promises new breakthroughs and is a big scientific challenge. Moreover, it is of high scientific interest that the presence of both second- and third-order nonlinearities results in complex cavity dynamics. In particular, the role of χ(3) nonlinearity in the generation of the quadratic microcomb is still far from being well understood. Here, we demonstrate the interaction between the second- and third-order nonlinearity in the lithium niobate microresonator, which can provide a new way of phase matching to control the mode-locking condition and pulse number for the quadratic microcomb. Our results verify that the Kerr nonlinearity can benefit the quadratic microcomb. The principle can be further extended to other material platforms to provide more manipulation methods for comb generation based on χ(2) nonlinearity at mid-infrared.

Abstract:Microresonator Kerr frequency combs, which rely on third-order nonlinearity ($\chi^{(3)}$), are of great interest for a wide range of applications including optical clocks, pulse shaping, spectroscopy, telecommunications, light detection and ranging (LiDAR) and quantum information processing. Many of these applications require further spectral and temporal control of the generated frequency comb signal, which is typically accomplished using additional photonic elements with strong second-order nonlinearity ($\chi^{(2)}$). To date these functionalities have largely been implemented as discrete off-chip components due to material limitations, which come at the expense of extra system complexity and increased optical losses. Here we demonstrate the generation, filtering and electro-optic modulation of a frequency comb on a single monolithic integrated chip, using a thin-film lithium niobate (LN) photonic platform that simultaneously possesses large $\chi^{(2)}$ and $\chi^{(3)}$ nonlinearities and low optical losses. We generate broadband Kerr frequency combs using a dispersion-engineered high quality factor LN microresonator, select a single comb line using an electrically programmable add-drop filter, and modulate the intensity of the selected line. Our results pave the way towards monolithic integrated frequency comb solutions for spectroscopy data communication, ranging and quantum photonics.

Abstract:Since its invention, optical frequency comb has revolutionized a broad range of subjects from metrology to spectroscopy. The recent development of microresonator-based frequency combs (microcombs) provides a unique pathway to create frequency comb systems on a chip. Indeed, microcomb-based spectroscopy, ranging, optical synthesizer, telecommunications and astronomical calibrations have been reported recently. Critical to many of the integrated comb systems is the broad coverage of comb spectra. Here, microcombs of more than two-octave span (450 nm to 2,008 nm) is demonstrated through χ (2) and χ (3) nonlinearities in a deformed silica microcavity. The deformation lifts the circular symmetry and creates chaotic tunneling channels that enable broadband collection of intracavity emission with a single waveguide. Our demonstration introduces a new degree of freedom, cavity deformation, to the microcomb studies, and our microcomb spectral range is useful for applications in optical clock, astronomical calibration and biological imaging.

Abstract:Nonlinear wave mixing in optical microresonators offers a route to chip-level optical frequency combs with many promising applications. The properties of the combs generated depend crucially on the interaction between nonlinearity and dispersion. This paper will discuss our research on Kerr comb generation in silicon nitride chip-scale microresonators, with an emphasis on distinct features observed in the normal and anomalous dispersion regimes. The topics covered include comb initiation, comb coherence and mode-locking, power conversion efficiency, and second-harmonic involved comb generation.

Abstract:Optical frequency combs allow for precise measurement of optical frequencies and are used in a growing number of applications beyond spectroscopy and optical frequency metrology. A class of compact microresonator based frequency comb generators has emerged recently based on (hyper)-parametric frequency conversion, mediated by the Kerr-non-linearity, of a continuous wave laser beam. Despite the rapid progress and the emergence of a wide variety of micro-resonator Kerr-comb platforms, an understanding of the dynamics of the Kerr comb formation is still lacking. In particular the question in which regime low phase noise performance can be achieved has so far not been answered but is of critical importance for future application of this technology. Here an universal, platform independent understanding of the Kerr-comb formation dynamics based on experimental observations in crystalline MgF2 and planar Si3N4 comb generators is given. This explains a wide range of hereto not understood phenomena and reveals for the first time the underlying condition for low phase noise performance.

Abstract:Microcomb generation with simultaneous χ2 and χ3 nonlinearities brings new possibilities for ultrabroadband and potentially self-referenced integrated comb sources. However, the evolution of the intracavity field involving multiple nonlinear processes shows complex dynamics that are still poorly understood. Here, we report on strong soliton regulation induced by fundamental–second-harmonic（FD-SH） mode coupling. The formation of solitons from chaos is extensively investigated based on coupled Lugiato–Lefever equations. The soliton generation shows more deterministic behaviors in the presence of FD-SH mode interaction, which is in sharp contrast with the usual cases where the soliton number and relative locations are stochastic. Deterministic single soliton transition, soliton binding, and prohibition are observed, depending on the phase-matching condition and coupling coefficient between the fundamental and second-harmonic waves. Our finding provides important new insights into the soliton dynamics in microcavities with simultaneous χ~2and χ~3nonlinearities and can be immediate guidance for broadband soliton comb generation with such platforms.

Abstract:A shaped doublet pump pulse is proposed for a simultaneous octave-spanning soliton Kerr frequency comb generation and second-harmonic conversion in a single microresonator. The temporal soliton in the cavity is trapped atop a doublet-pulse pedestal, resulting in a greatly expanded soliton region compared to that with a general Gaussian pulse pump. The possibility of single-microresonator comb self-referencing in a single silicon nitride microring that can facilitate compact on-chip optical clocks is demonstrated via simulation.

Abstract:Optical microresonator-based Kerr frequency comb generation has developed into a hot research area in the past decade. Microresonator combs are promising for portable applications due to their potential for chip-level integration and low power consumption. According to the group velocity dispersion of the microresonator employed, research in this field may be classified into two categories: the anomalous dispersion regime and the normal dispersion regime. In this paper, we discuss the physics of Kerr comb generation in the normal dispersion regime and review recent experimental advances. The potential advantages and future directions of normal dispersion combs are also discussed.

Abstract:AbstractThe rapid development of optical frequency combs from their table-top origins towards chip-scale platforms has opened up exciting possibilities for comb functionalities outside laboratories. Enhanced nonlinear processes in microresonators have emerged as a mainstream comb-generating mechanism with compelling advantages in size, weight, and power consumption. The established understanding of gain and loss in nonlinear microresonators, along with recently developed ultralow-loss nonlinear photonic circuitry, has boosted the optical energy conversion efficiency of microresonator frequency comb (microcomb) devices from below a few percent to above 50%. This review summarizes the latest advances in novel photonic devices and pumping strategies that contribute to these milestones of microcomb efficiency. The resulting benefits for high-performance integration of comb applications are also discussed before summarizing the remaining challenges.

Abstract:A high-quality optical microcavity can enhance optical nonlinear effects by resonant recirculation, which provides a reliable platform for nonlinear optics research. When a soliton microcomb and a probe optical field are coexisting in a micro-resonator, a concomitant microcomb (CMC) induced by cross-phase modulation (XPM) will be formed synchronously. Here, we characterize the CMC comprehensively in a micro-resonator through theory, numerical simulation, and experimental verification. It is found that the CMCs spectra are modulated due to resonant radiation (RR) resulting from the interaction of dispersion and XPM effects. The group velocity dispersion induces symmetric RRs on the CMC, which leads to a symmetric spectral envelope and a dual-peak pulse in frequency and temporal domains, respectively, while the group velocity mismatch breaks the symmetry of RRs and leads to asymmetric spectral and temporal profiles. When the group velocity is linearly varying with frequency, two RR frequencies are hyperbolically distributed about the pump, and the probe light acts as one of the asymptotic lines. Our results enrich the CMC dynamics and guide microcomb design and applications such as spectral extension and dark pulse generation.

Abstract:Optical frequency combs allow for the precise measurement of optical frequencies and are used in a growing number of applications. The new class of Kerr-frequency comb sources, based on parametric frequency conversion in optical microresonators, can complement conventional systems in applications requiring high repetition rates such as direct comb spectroscopy, spectrometer calibration, arbitrary optical waveform generation and advanced telecommunications. However, a severe limitation in experiments working towards practical systems is phase noise, observed in the form of linewidth broadening, multiple repetition-rate beat notes and loss of temporal coherence. These phenomena are not explained by the current theory of Kerr comb formation, yet understanding this is crucial to the maturation of Kerr comb technology. Here, based on observations in crystalline MgF2 and planar Si3N4 microresonators, we reveal the universal, platform-independent dynamics of Kerr comb formation, allowing the explanation of a wide range of phenomena not previously understood, as well as identifying the condition for, and transition to, low-phase-noise performance.
