Abstract:Recently, on-chip comb generation methods based on nonlinear optical modulation in ultrahigh-quality-factor monolithic microresonators have been demonstrated, where two pump photons are transformed into sideband photons in a four-wave-mixing process mediated by Kerr nonlinearity. Here, we investigate line-by-line pulse shaping of such combs generated in silicon nitride ring resonators. We observe two distinct paths to comb formation that exhibit strikingly different time-domain behaviours. For combs formed as a cascade of sidebands spaced by a single free spectral range that spread from the pump, we are able to compress stably to nearly bandwidth-limited pulses. This indicates high coherence across the spectra and provides new data on the high passive stability of the spectral phase. For combs where the initial sidebands are spaced by multiple free spectral ranges that then fill in to give combs with single free-spectral-range spacing, the time-domain data reveal partially coherent behaviour.

Abstract:A high-quality optical microcavity can enhance optical nonlinear effects by resonant recirculation, which provides a reliable platform for nonlinear optics research. When a soliton microcomb and a probe optical field are coexisting in a micro-resonator, a concomitant microcomb (CMC) induced by cross-phase modulation (XPM) will be formed synchronously. Here, we characterize the CMC comprehensively in a micro-resonator through theory, numerical simulation, and experimental verification. It is found that the CMCs spectra are modulated due to resonant radiation (RR) resulting from the interaction of dispersion and XPM effects. The group velocity dispersion induces symmetric RRs on the CMC, which leads to a symmetric spectral envelope and a dual-peak pulse in frequency and temporal domains, respectively, while the group velocity mismatch breaks the symmetry of RRs and leads to asymmetric spectral and temporal profiles. When the group velocity is linearly varying with frequency, two RR frequencies are hyperbolically distributed about the pump, and the probe light acts as one of the asymptotic lines. Our results enrich the CMC dynamics and guide microcomb design and applications such as spectral extension and dark pulse generation.

Abstract:We propose optical frequency comb generation in a monolithic micro-ring resonator. Being different from the previously reported nonlinear optical frequency combs, our scheme is based on more efficient quadratic frequency conversion rather than the third-order nonlinearity. To overcome the phase mismatch, a partly poled nonlinear ring is employed. Cascading second harmonic generation and parametric down conversion processes thus are realized through quasi-phase matching (QPM). Coupling equations are used to describe the related nonlinear interactions among different whispering-gallery modes, showing some interesting characteristics that are different from conventional QPM technology.

Abstract:We demonstrate a frequency comb spanning an octave via the parametric process of cascaded four-wave mixing in a monolithic, high-Q silicon nitride microring resonator. The comb is generated from a single-frequency pump laser at 1562 nm and spans 128 THz with a spacing of 226 GHz, which can be tuned slightly with the pump power. In addition, we investigate the RF amplitude noise characteristics of the parametric comb and find that the comb can operate in a low-noise state with a 30 dB reduction in noise as the pump frequency is tuned into the cavity resonance.

Abstract:Simultaneous second-harmonic generation in microresonator-based Kerr optical frequency combs (microcombs) can potentially facilitate on-chip comb self-referencing for optical frequency metrology. Moreover, the participation of second-order nonlinearity may affect the comb self-starting and modelocking behaviors, resulting in complex dynamics that is still far from well understood. Here, we report on both experimental and theoretical investigations on the interaction dynamics between the fundamental and second-harmonic waves in microcomb generation. We show that the nonlinear dynamics governed by the third-order nonlinearity can be significantly altered by the nonlinear mode coupling. Specifically, we demonstrate that second-harmonic mode coupling can provide an entirely new way of fulfilling phase-matching for four-wave mixing in the normal dispersion regime, where comb creation is prohibited in the absence of mode coupling. We derive coupled time-domain meanfield equations to model the comb dynamics in microresonators with simultaneous second-and thirdorder nonlinearities. The numerical simulation results show excellent agreement with our experimental observations. We expect our findings will have a wide impact on the study of nonlinear cavity dynamics with interacting second-and third-order nonlinearities, and will enable new mechanisms for reliable high-performance microcombs.

Abstract:AbstractThe rapid development of optical frequency combs from their table-top origins towards chip-scale platforms has opened up exciting possibilities for comb functionalities outside laboratories. Enhanced nonlinear processes in microresonators have emerged as a mainstream comb-generating mechanism with compelling advantages in size, weight, and power consumption. The established understanding of gain and loss in nonlinear microresonators, along with recently developed ultralow-loss nonlinear photonic circuitry, has boosted the optical energy conversion efficiency of microresonator frequency comb (microcomb) devices from below a few percent to above 50%. This review summarizes the latest advances in novel photonic devices and pumping strategies that contribute to these milestones of microcomb efficiency. The resulting benefits for high-performance integration of comb applications are also discussed before summarizing the remaining challenges.

Abstract:Soliton frequency comb generation in coupled nonlinear microcavities is attractive because a coupled microcavity offers more flexibility and possibilities compared to a single nonlinear microcavity. In this paper, we investigate how an amplifying auxiliary cavity affects the bistability region of the main cavity and soliton frequency comb generation. When the auxiliary cavity has a small gain, it can partially compensate for the loss of the main cavity allowing the generation of soliton combs with a relatively low Q-factor in the main cavity. A low Q-factor microcavity would reduce the difficulty of fabrication and extend the microcavity platform to different types of materials. However, if the gain of the auxiliary cavity is too large, a frequency comb cannot be generated because the coupled nonlinear microcavity system is no longer dissipative. Our results provide a theoretical understanding and experimental guidance for the bistability region and soliton frequency comb generation in coupled nonlinear microcavities with an amplifying auxiliary cavity. The results will facilitate the development of chip-scale integrated optical frequency comb sources.

Abstract:Soliton formation in on-chip micro-comb generation balances cavity dispersion and nonlinearity and allows coherent, low-noise comb operation. We study the intracavity waveform of an on-chip microcavity soliton in a silicon nitride microresonator configured with a drop port. Whereas combs measured at the through port are accompanied by a very strong pump line which accounts for >99% of the output power, our experiments reveal that inside the microcavity, most of the power is in the soliton. Time-domain measurements performed at the drop port provide information that directly reflects the intracavity field. Data confirm a train of bright, close to bandwidth-limited pulses, accompanied by a weak continuous wave (CW) background with a small phase shift relative to the comb.

Abstract:Optical resonators with high quality (Q) factor can restrict light in a small mode volume for a long time, greatly enhancing the interaction between light and matter, and becoming an important component with great potential in integrated optical devices. Focusing on the silicon nitride material platform, which is currently widely used in the field of integrated nonlinear optics, in order to solve the problem of large scattering loss in the large size on-chip silicon nitride microring resonator caused by the stitching error, the surface roughness and other factors, a series of fabrication process improvements were made to improve the quality factor of the large size silicon nitride microring resonator. The results show that the scattering loss of the silicon nitride waveguide can be effectively reduced by thin film redeposition process, and the intrinsic Q of the large size silicon nitride microring resonator with a radius of 560 μm is increased by 26% on average. Thanks to the improved Q of the large size microring resonator, the frequency comb with the repetition rate of 40 GHz is realized in the on-chip silicon nitride microring resonator.

Abstract:Recent investigations of microcavity frequency combs based on cascaded four-wave mixing have revealed a link between the evolution of the optical spectrum and the observed temporal coherence. Here we study a silicon nitride microresonator for which the initial four-wave mixing sidebands are spaced by multiple free spectral ranges (FSRs) from the pump, then fill in to yield a comb with single FSR spacing, resulting in partial coherence. By using a pulse shaper to select and manipulate the phase of various subsets of spectral lines, we are able to probe the structure of the coherence within the partially coherent comb. Our data demonstrate strong variation in the degree of mutual coherence between different groups of lines and provide support for a simple model of partially coherent comb formation.

Abstract:Microcombs -- optical frequency combs generated in coherently-driven nonlinear microresonators -- have attracted significant attention over the last decade. The ability to generate two such combs in a single resonator device has in particular enabled a host of applications from spectroscopy to imaging. Concurrently, novel comb generation techniques such as synchronous pulsed driving have been developed to enhance the efficiency and flexibility of microcomb generation. Here we report on the first experimental demonstration of dual-microcomb generation via synchronous pulsed pumping of a single microresonator. Specifically, we use two electro-optically generated pulse trains derived from a common continuous wave laser to simultaneously drive two orthogonal polarization modes of an integrated silica ring resonator, observing the generation of coherent dissipative Kerr cavity soliton combs on both polarization axes. Thanks to the resonator birefringence, the two soliton combs are associated with different repetition rates, thus realizing a dual-microcomb source. To illustrate the source's application potential, we demonstrate proof-of-concept spectroscopic measurements.
