Abstract:We proposed a novel photonic crystal fiber composed of a double-cladding square lattice that could be used in dual-band, Er and Tm optical gain bands, simultaneously supporting a large negative dispersion and a high birefringence. We theoretically investigated the light guiding property through the proposed photonic crystal fiber by using a vectorial finite-element method with a perfectly matched layer. By optimizing the structural parameters, we obtained an ultra-large negative dispersion of 20,186 ps(nmkm) and a very high birefringence of 9.27 103 at the wavelength of 1.55 m in the Er gain band and a very large negative dispersion of 8,067 ps(nmkm) and a high birefringence of 1.0 103 at the wavelength of 1.87 m in the Tm band. We further discussed the roles of waveguide parameters on the chromatic dispersion, its slope, and the birefringence of the fiber as well as the mode field diameter. The proposed fiber could be directly applied for dual-band dispersion and polarization control in fiber laser cavities as well as optical communications and sensors in the dual bands.

Abstract:A composite microchip laser composed of neodymium doped yttrium aluminum garnet (Nd:YAG) and neodymium doped lanthanum-modified lead zirconate titanate (Nd:PLZT) is proposed. The high electro-optic effect of PLZT, combined with the high gain effect of Nd3+, makes Nd:PLZT not only a tuning medium for wavelengths, but also a gain medium for optical amplification. The emitted spectra can be tuned by the voltages on the Nd:PLZT, and the output power is enhanced. In addition, the laser is compact, small and highly efficient.

Abstract:On-chip ultra-wideband optical waveguide amplifiers are crucial for short-distance optical interconnections that utilize wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) technology. Silicon optical amplifiers still face significant challenges due to the indirect-band-gap nature and low rare earth solubility of silicon. This paper prepared a series of Er3+-Tm3+ co-doped La2O3–Al2O3 glasses that are expected to be used in on-chip ultra-broadband optical waveguide amplifiers by aerodynamic levitation (ADL) technique, and further studied their luminescence characteristics and energy transfer process. Research results indicate that the glass composition 5Er2O3-0.6Tm2O3-43.4La2O3–51Al2O3 is an optimal optical waveguide amplifier host material due to its excellent luminescence properties and ultra-broadband flat photoluminescence spectrum extending up to 440 nm. Moreover, positive gain can be obtained with a population ratio greater than 0.2, which further illustrates its feasibility as a matrix material for ultra-broadband optical waveguide amplifiers. The advancement of this material is expected to significantly aid in the fabrication and progress of next-generation ultra-wideband optical waveguide amplifiers.

Abstract:High-gain materials and high-quality structures are the two main conditions that determine the amplification performance of optical waveguides. However, it has been hard to balance each other, to date. In this work, we demonstrate breakthroughs in both glass optical gain and optical waveguide structures. We propose a secondary melting dehydration technique that prepares high-quality Er3+-Yb3+ co-doped phosphate glass with low absorption loss. Additionally, we propose a femtosecond laser direct-writing technique that allows controlling the cross section, size, and mode field of waveguides written in glass with high accuracy, leveraging submicron-resolution multi-scan direct-writing optical waveguide technology, which is beneficial for reducing insertion loss. As a proof of concept demonstration, we designed and fabricated two kinds of waveguides, namely, LP01- and LP11-mode waveguides in the Er3+-Yb3+ co-doped phosphate glass, enabling insertion loss as low as 0.9 dB for a waveguide length of 2 mm. Remarkably, we successfully achieved an optical amplification for both the waveguides with a net gain of >7 dB and a net-gain coefficient of >3.5 dB/mm, which is approximately one order of magnitude larger than that in the Er3+-Yb3+ co-doped phosphate glass fabricated by the traditional melt-quenching method. This will open new avenues toward the development of integrated photonic chips.

Abstract:Erbium-doped materials have played an important role in the fabrication of light sources used in silicon photonics. Recent studies demonstrated that erbium silicate nanowire had a high net gain attributable to its high erbium concentration and excellent material quality. We establish a more accurate and comprehensive theoretical model of erbium silicate nanowire, analyze the modeled nanowire's properties, and optimize a high-gain erbium silicate waveguide amplifier and low-threshold, high-efficiency laser by considering upconversion, energy transfer, and amplified spontaneous emission. The simulation results and previous experimental data reported in reference showed some agreement. A proposed waveguide amplifier, based on the optimized design, displayed a gain greater than 20 dB/mm. Then, a 3.3 mW low-threshold laser with a maximum power-conversion efficiency of 50% was modeled by choosing the optimized resonator cavity and reflector. The results indicate that erbium silicate compound materials with large optical gains can serve as potential candidates for inclusion in scale-integrated amplifiers and other applications requiring lasers.

Abstract:Efficient planar optical waveguide amplifiers at C-band are critical to the development of silicon photonics. In order to overcome the problem of low utilization efficiency of 980 nm pump for erbium-based planar optical waveguide amplifiers, an Er3+-Yb3+ co-doped La2O3–Al2O3 glass material for optical waveguide amplifiers was developed in this paper. While maintaining a high Er3+ doping concentration (∼1021 cm−3), the utilization efficiency of the material for 980 nm pumping is improved, so that the pump threshold of the waveguide amplifier fabricated with this material is lowered. Moreover, up-conversion and down-conversion luminescence are also suppressed in the material, resulting in a significant increase in the luminescence intensity of the C-band. A simple ridge waveguide simulation suggests that waveguide amplifiers fabricated by this material are expected to surpass the highest net gain reported so far for erbium-based planar waveguide amplifiers.

Abstract:Highly erbium-doped xEr2O3-44La2O3-(56-x)Al2O3 glasses are synthesized by an aerodynamic levitation (ADL) technique. The optimum erbium-doped concentration in 5Er2O3-44La2O3-51Al2O3 glass can reach ~1.61 × 1021 cm−3. All the fluorescence emission spectra of the glasses under different wavelength bands are measured. The results show the strongest emission intensity at communication band (C-band). The longest radiation lifetime in 4I13/2 → 4I15/2 transition is about ~5.23 ms. The Judd-Ofelt (J-O) parameters of 5Er2O3-44La2O3-51Al2O3 glass are also calculated to evaluate the potential of the glass as a substrate material for optical waveguide amplifier. Based on the parameters of the glass, We used MATLAB to write the gain simulation model of the waveguide amplifier, combined with the COMSOL software to simulate and optimize the waveguide geometry, and calculated the overall gain characteristic curves of optical waveguide amplifiers with different lengths are calculated theoretically. An internal net gain of up to 12.13 dB/cm in the C-band is obtained from the hybrid waveguide amplifier with 1 cm.

Abstract:Optical waveguide amplifiers are essential devices in integrated optical systems, with their gain bandwidths directly influencing the operating wavelengths of optical circuits. Previous Er 3+ -doped polymer optical waveguide amplifiers have been limited to amplifying signals within the C-band. To achieve broadband polymer optical waveguide amplification, we propose the use of nanocrystals with low crystal field symmetry to extend the working bandwidth. Our approach utilizes LiYF 4 : Yb, Er nanoparticles embedded in poly(methyl methacrylate) as the gain medium, enabling signal amplification from most of the S-band to the whole (C + L) band. The low crystal field symmetry of the LiYF 4 host significantly splits the 4 I 13/2 and 4 I 15/2 levels of Er 3+ ions owing to the crystal field effect, facilitating broadband down-conversion luminescence under 980-nm excitation. Furthermore, a fluorescence kinetic analysis confirms that the broadband luminescence of Er 3+ arises from significant energy-level splitting caused by the crystal field effect. Under 980-nm excitation, the amplifiers exhibited relative gains of approximately 12.6 dB at 1535 nm, 7.4 dB at 1480 nm, and 3.7 dB at 1610 nm. The Er 3+ -doped broadband polymer optical waveguide amplifier was successfully prepared.

Abstract:We demonstrate a high efficiency mid-infrared laser source based on optical parametric oscillator (OPO) assisted by an intracavity optical parametric amplification (OPA). The OPA-assisted-OPO scheme was realized in one piece of commensurable dual-periodic superlattice in which the signal light generated from the OPO process serves as the pump light for the OPA process. A maximum output power of 508 mW at 3.92 μm was achieved under a pump power of 2.85 W at 1.064 μm. The pump-to-idler conversion efficiency is 17.8% and the slope efficiency is 23.8%, and the enhancements of them are 58.9% and 67.6%, respectively, comparing with the standard OPO scheme.

Abstract:In this letter, an ultracompact silicon-based Mach-Zehnder amplitude modulator is proposed. The modulator is realized by infiltrating electrooptic polymers into horizontal photonic crystal slotted slab (HPCSS) waveguides. The optical mode in the phase modulation arms is strongly constrained horizontally by the photonic crystal band gap and vertically by the horizontal slotted slab. The band diagram and group velocity dispersion of the linear defect waveguide in the HPCSS are analyzed. A V ?? ??L product of 1.4 mV??cm and a bandwidth of over 83 GHz can be obtained.

Abstract:Inscription of fiber-compatible active waveguides in high-gain glass, followed by direct interconnection with few-mode fibers, is one of the most promising solutions for all-optical mode-division multiplexing. In this work, based on the femtosecond laser writing technique, we propose a general fabrication scheme for inscribing high-order mode waveguides in glass, by carefully tailoring the cross-section of the waveguides to match the mode intensity distribution via an improved multi-scan approach. Specifically, we design and fabricate two kinds of waveguides, namely, LP01-mode waveguide and LP11-mode waveguide in a highly Er3+-doped phosphate glass, enabling the insertion loss of the waveguides to be as low as 1.88 dB, and the mode extraction factor of the LP11-mode waveguide up to ∼24 dB. Importantly, we have successfully achieved optical amplification of the waveguides, with an on-off gain as high as 3.52 dB. This novel high-order mode waveguide amplifier has broad application prospects in monolithic on-chip integrated photonic light sources and optical interconnection with few-mode fiber and/or silicon-based waveguide.

Abstract:Expanding gain bandwidth into the L-band for erbium-doped fiber amplifiers (EDFAs) is a crucial strategy to overcome limitations in prevalent C-band focused commercial silica-based EDFAs, significantly boosting optical network transmission capacity. Herein, we synthesized Er3+-doped broadband near-infrared emission tellurite glasses utilizing the melt quenching process, systematically exploring the impact of ZnCl2 on the glass structure and optical properties. The 82TeO2–3Nb2O5–15ZnCl2–3Er2O3 (TNZ15) glass emerged as a standout candidate for broadband amplifiers around wavelength at 1.55 μm. With escalating ZnCl2 concentration, a discernible red shift in the emission peak wave lines was observed, accompanied by an expansion of the full width at half maximum (FWHM) from 98 nm to 106 nm. Noteworthy characteristics of all samples included exceptional thermal stability and elevated near-infrared (NIR) transmittance. Application of the Judd-Ofelt (J-O) theory facilitated the calculation of J-O parameter intensity, providing deeper insights into the optical behavior of the materials. Finally, the evaluation of TNZ15 planar optical waveguides, employing the vertical top pumping mode of two 980 nm LEDs, encompassed both the C-band (1530–1565 nm) and the L-band (1565–1625 nm). The results underscore the potential of TNZ15 glass as a promising gain material for broadband optical amplifiers and lasers, offering valuable insights into the development of next-generation optical amplification technologies.

Abstract:Extending the gain bandwidth of L-band optical fiber amplifier has provoked a widespread interest. To date, achieving a high-efficiency extended L-band amplification remains a challenge. Here, we report a cladding-pumped Er/Yb co-doped alumino-phosphosilicate fiber, prepared by the modified chemical vapor deposition process. We demonstrate the efficiency of alumino-phosphosilicate glass for cladding-pumped Er/Yb co-doped fiber, with a gain per unit fiber length of 0.45 dB/m at 1625 nm and a gain ripple of ∼9.4 dB. For 0.8 W pump power, the fiber exhibits a 20 dB gain bandwidth covering 1575-1625 nm and 6.9 dB noise figure at 1625 nm. Additionally, the utilization of multi-mode laser diode enables further significant power savings and cost reduction. To the best of our knowledge, Er/Yb co-doped fiber in alumino-phosphosilicate glass is first proposed, with a cladding-pumped scheme for enhancing an extended L-band performance.

Abstract:In the process of information technology, as Moore's law becomes more and more close to the limit, the consensus to combine microelectronics and optoelectronics to develop silicon-based large-scale optoelectronic integration technology is inevitable. As the most important part of silicon photonic devices. a silicon-based light source still attracted great effort. In the traditional research, erbium-doped materials have played an important role in silicon-based light sources. Abstract:An Er3+/Yb3+ co-doped waveguide amplifier and a lossless power splitter were fabricated by two-step ion exchange on commercial Schott IOG-1 glasses. A two-dimensional ion exchange model was set up, and numerical simulations using a finite-element-method agreed well with experimental results. A total net gain of 6 dB was achieved in a 2.5-cm-long waveguide amplifier, and a lossless power splitter was successfully realized as well.

Abstract:We designed and fabricated a double-layered structure Er3+:Ta2O5 waveguide and investigated its optical amplification performance in C band. The pump laser threshold for zero gain at 1533 nm was 2.5 mW, and the internal net gain was ∼4.63 dB/cm for a lunched pump power of 36.1 mW at 980 nm and signal input power of -30.0 dBm (1 µW). The relationship between the internal gain and the signal input power was also investigated, and a large internal net gain of 10.58 dB/cm was achieved at a signal input power of ∼-47.1 dBm. The results confirm the potentials of the use of Ta2O5 as a host material for optical waveguide amplification.

Abstract:Fiber amplifiers operating in the L-band can benefit from further extending their gain bandwidth and improving overall operation costs. Fiber samples were fabricated using the modified chemical vapor deposition (MCVD) and solution doping technique. Using a maximum amount of phosphorus consistent with a flat refractive index profile, we find the optimum alumino-phospho-silicate glass matrix. The achieved amplifier exhibits a large gain amplification ranging from 15 to 25 dB, with its peak gain occurring at 1610 nm when pumped with a total power of 1.4 W at 978 nm. The maximum noise figure was 6.3 dB, while the gain ripple within the wavelength range of 1575 to 1626 nm was 76%. Moreover, we have obtained a low level of pair-induced quenching (<3%) using Y rather than Yb as a de-clustering agent for Er3+ concentration of 1.2 ×1025 m-3. The result provides a viable solution to the 980 nm pumping scheme in a quest to achieve cost-effective and low-noise L-band EDFAs.
