Abstract:Absolute gravimeter uses optical interferometry to measure the trajectory of the free-falling body in vacuum and gets the best estimate of the gravity acceleration by least squares fitting calculation. In this paper, polynomial fitting is used to suppress the common drift of the interference fringe and the trajectory reconstruction of the free-falling body is realized by using the method of linear interpolation zero-crossing detection. The uncertainty of the measurement introduced by this method is analyzed in detail and the results show that with the maximum frequency of the interference fringes f0=4.17MHz and sampling rate fs=83.3MHz, the gravity acceleration measurement uncertainty introduced is 0.19μGal(μGal=10-8m/s2 ).

Abstract:In this paper, we accurately obtained the depolarized interferometric fiber optic gyroscope (D-IFOG) output error caused by elasto-optic effect in vibration environment. We established the optical transmission model of DIFOG and simulated the stress distribution of D-IFOG caused by vibration based on finite element method. The computational results show that the angular velocity error has a phase difference of 90 degrees with the sinusoidal excitation, and when the vibration's amplitude is 4 g and the frequency is 70 Hz, for triaxial D-IFOGs, the maximum angle error of Y-axis is up to 3.54 x 10(-4)degrees, and that of X-axis and Z-axis is 6.26 x 10(-5)degrees. And we set up a high-precison dynamic angular measurement system based on dual-laser Doppler vibrometers to evaluate the angular error in D-IFOGs. The experimental results are consistent with those of numerical simulations, which have verified the angle error model. This work is meaningful for the follow-up D-IFOG's vibration error compensation.

Abstract:A novel super-resolution imaging technique based on the minimum photon flux (MINFLUX), can achieve nanometer-scale localization precision and sub-5-nm imaging. However, aberrations can affect the localization performance and degrade the quality of reconstructed images. In this study, we analyze the effects of different low-order aberrations on the MINFLUX system through both theoretical limits and Monte Carlo methods. We report that 1) defocus and spherical aberration have little effect on 2D localization performance, whereas astigmatism and coma have significant negative effects; 2) system aberrations that can be measured in advance cause changes primarily in the magnitude and angular uniformity of localization precision, whereas sample-induced aberrations that cannot be a priori introduce large biases and reduce localization accuracy.

Abstract:A new method, in which the wavefronts of the zero-order and the positive and negative first-order diffracted beams from a planar scale grating in Littrow setup are analyzed by a Fizeau interferometer, is proposed to evaluate the Z-directional out-of-flatness as well as the X-and Y-directional pitch deviations of the planar scale grating over a large area. Meanwhile, the surface profile of the reference optical flat in the Fizeau interferometer can also be determined in a much simpler and more efficient approach than the commonly used liquid-flat reference and three-flat test calibration methods. Abstract:Ultrashort laser pulse has been widely used in various applications. Its parameters, such as the pulse duration and the spectral bandwidth, should be controlled accurately in order to achieve high spatial and temporal resolution, as well as high local field intensity. In this paper, we have proposed a method to trace the propagation of ultrashort pulses through optical systems, especially the complex optics. The approach, in which both the material's dispersion and optical aberrations are taken into consideration, is developed based on the geometrical ray-tracing combined with wave theories. This method is validated by simulating the propagation of a femtosecond pulse through a specific practical imaging system. As the numerical result shows that the spatial-temporal performances of pulses are influenced greatly by optical elements, the calibration arrangement is employed to compensate for those undesired distortions. The negative dispersion of the optical grisms (the combination of gratings and prisms) is utilized in the calibration process to offset the positive dispersion introduced by lenses. The final result shows effectiveness of the correction.

Abstract:Based on the difference between theoretical with real interferogram images the figure of original aspheric surface can be obtained using an algorithm of Reverse iterate Optimization Reconstruction (ROR) calculating technique. Because the procedure of ray tracing path needed an accurate geometry of optical structure size so the aspheric and compensator L C must be located in the optical path. To avoid the compensator L C resulted in bigger spherical aberration a smart located method is proposed in this paper. Before measurement an aplanatic lens consists of compensator L C and another removable lens L M that the last surface is a standard one. So Fiezau interference is formed by the standard one with reflected ray from the vertex of aspheric that the aspheric surface detected can be accurately located. At testing the lenses L M will be removed and the aspheric is moved to an adapted position. The experiments show the displacement locating accuracy is an amount of micron. The RMS for aspheric testing of ROR calculating technique is better than 1/200 wavelength. © 2009 SPIE.

Abstract:It is challenging to quantitate micron-scale defects on the surface of large optics. Based on microscopic scattering dark-field imaging, sub-aperture scanning and stitching, the Surface Defects Evaluating System (SDES) can spot and measure scratch and digs on large optics. In order to evaluate defects of down to sub-micron over apertures of hundreds of millimeters, high magnification zoom microscope and large format CCD camera are employed to balance between the efficiency and resolution. Unfortunately, large optical distortion in the sub-aperture images can be found, and feature recognition of defect images as well as mismatches of the sub-apertures stitching are greatly affected. In this paper, a distortion correction procedure based on the Brown–Conrady model is proposed. Grayscale surface fitting and bilinear interpolation techniques are employed to obtain better correction accuracy. A grids-patterned fused silica standard plate has been specifically made to calibrate the distortion. Comparison experiments indicate that the distortion in the SDES can be corrected by the proposed method very well.

Abstract:An interferometric micro-optomechanical accelerometer usually has ultrahigh sensitivity and accuracy. However, cross-axis interference inevitably degrades the performance, including its detection accuracy and output signal contrast. To accurately clarify the influence of cross-axis interference, a modified mechanical-optical theoretical model is established. The rotation of the proof mass and the detected light intensity are quantitatively investigated with a load of cross-axis acceleration. A simulation and experiment are performed to verify the correctness of the theoretical model when the cross-axis acceleration is from 0 to 0.175 g. The results demonstrate that this model has a more than fivefold accuracy increase compared with conventional theoretical models when the cross-axis acceleration is from 0.06 to 0.175 g. In addition, we provide a suppression method to diminish the rotation of the proof mass based on squeeze film air damping, which significantly suppresses the contrast reduction caused by crossaxis interference. Abstract:We report a design for gravity gradient measurements based on Sagnac interferometry. A structure with two masses is designed to convert the effect of gravity gradients into rotational motion. Sagnac interferometry based on optical fibers is introduced to probe its rotational motion. The systematic effects are analyzed theoretically and validated by the static observation of an experimental apparatus. In a 37-day record, we achieve a noise level of $5\,\, \times 10^{-12}$ rads $^{-2}$ Hz $^{-1/2}$ under a room temperature environment without any vibration isolation and magnetic shielding devices. The corresponding contribution for the gravity gradient measurement is estimated to $1\,\, \times 10^{-2}$ EHz $^{-1/2}$ .
Implementation of accurate phase shift in Fizeau interferometer

Abstract:To realize the high accuracy measurement of optical surfaces by a phase-shifting Fizeau interferometer,a synchronous acquisition phase-shifting system in the interferometer was established,and an accurate phase shifting method was researched.First,the composition and working principle of the phase-shifting system were introduced.Then,the velocity of PZT phase shifter during measurement was calculated.Since there exist defocus errors as well as speed-up and speed-down steps during phase shift,the moving process of phase shifter was detailedly designed.Finally,the phase shifter was calibrated.A verified experiment was carried out on the modified interferometer,and it shows that the RMS simple repeatability is λ/11 340.Comparative measurement was also carried out with two same components between the modified interferometer and the Verifire XP/D interferometer(Zygo company),and the RMS difference is about 0.9 nm.It can be seen that the repeatability and accuracy of this phase-shifting system and phase-shifting method have satisfied the requirement of nano-scale form measurement,which can provide references for developing high accuracy phase-shifting interferometers.

Abstract:Abstract Gravity acceleration is an important physical quantity, and its precise measurement results have important applications in practice. According to the principle of measuring gravity acceleration in college physics experiment, a scheme of measuring gravity acceleration by laser interferometry is designed, and the main sources and sizes of experimental errors are analyzed and calculated. Compared with the common simple pendulum method and falling body method, the theoretical results show that our measurement method has higher precision and is feasible to accurately measure the acceleration of gravity.

Abstract:Misalignment aberrations in Fizeau interferometric testing system can significantly influence the measurement results in the case of high-numerical-aperture test spherical surfaces, and it is hard to separate the high-order misalignment aberrations from the measured data. The traditional calibration method, which is based on linear-approximation, is applicable in calibrating only the linear misalignment aberration in measurement of high-numerical-aperture spherical surfaces. Based on modified power term for interferometry and 4-overlapping averaging 9-frame algorithm, sub-nanometer accuracy high-order calibration method is proposed to calibrate the linear misalignment aberrations as well as high-order misalignment aberrations. Both the computer simulation and experimental results confirm the feasibility and accuracy of the proposed calibration technique, and sub-nanometer misalignment aberrations can be calibrated. The proposed method can also used in spherical surface ultra-precision measurement by other interferometric setups without foreknowledge of numerical aperture of the test surface.
The Influence of Phase-Shifting Algorithms on the Instrument Transfer Function in a Fizeau Interferometer

Abstract:The phase-shifting algorithms are essential for a Fizeau interferometer to reconstruct the topography of the optical element's surface or wavefront. There are differences between different algorithms for reconstruction results, especially for the suppression of noise. To acquire a more accurate instrument transfer function (ITF) which reflects the axial spatial frequency response of a Fizeau interferometer, the algorithm transfer function (ATF) which represents the characteristics of the calculation process in spatial frequency is proposed here. In this paper, numerical simulations were calculated and analyzed several instrument transfer functions of the well-known phase-shifting algorithms (3- frame, 4-frame, 5-frame and 13-frame algorithms). Then, the ITFs of a step plate with a height of 118 nm were measured with different algorithms by experiments and the results were analyzed. The simulations and experimental results indicate that the phase-shifting algorithm has an effect on the ITF measurement and is related to the number of interferograms. When interferograms with a similar number are selected, the ITF values calculated by different phase-shifting algorithms do not differ significantly. Therefore, the phase-shifting algorithm is not a key factor affecting the ITF measurement.

Abstract:This paper proposes a dual-stage correction approach for a high-accuracy phase-shifter in Fizeau laser interferometers, effectively reducing the phase shift errors in PSI (Phase-Shifting interferometry) and improving the precision of surface profile measurements. The precision of PSI depends on the displacement accuracy of the reference mirror, and the function of the phase shifter is to drive the reference mirror to generate wavelength-level displacements with nanometer-level accuracy. The first-stage correction aims to reduce the nonlinearity error of the reference mirror by ULPS (Ultra-High Linearity Phase Shifter). The second-stage correction aims to reduce the average velocity error and plane velocity uniformity error of the reference mirror by AVIC (Auto Velocity Iterative Correction). The experimental results indicate that, after the first-stage correction, ULPS exhibits a 0.05 % nonlinearity, a 2.5 nm repeatability, and a 0.2 nm resolution under a load of 20 kg, and its nonlinearity surpassing all phase-shifters documented in the literature. After the second-stage correction, the average velocity error and plane velocity uniformity error of the reference mirror are reduced to 0.07 %.

Precise Alignment of Hybrid Refractive-Diffractive Elements Based on Fizeau Interferometer

Abstract:In the process of fabrication and assembly of hybrid diffractive-refractive optical systems, the quality and performance of the hybrid devices significantly depend on the alignment level of elements. But for the inherent magnificent difference existed between traditional and diffractive elements, the conventional alignment method does not fit to be used in the hybrid optical system, so alignment error, a widely existed and difficult to be solved problem, has been the main bottleneck which seriously blocks the development of the application of the hybrid optical systems, and how to simply achieve the precise alignment of the diffractive and refractive elements of a hybrid device is an urgent problem needed to be solved by the researchers in this field. This paper presents that using Fizeau interferometer to simply align a piano-convex refractive element with a diffractive element with high precision. The theory of the method is analyzed and its precision is also estimated, and it is clearly shown that a system aligned by this method can meet the demand of optical systems, and the experimental results are satisfactory. All these show that the simple method presented in the paper is feasible and effective, and can constructively guide and enlighten people to solve other problems related to alignment error encountered in most necessary steps during the process of realizing a practical hybrid optical system.
Gravity measurement at the sub-millimeter scale with optical lattice clock

Abstract:Due to the excellent accuracy, the optical lattice clock (OLC) has not only achieved impressive results in frequency measurement but also gradually plays an important role in quantum precision measurement. In this paper, we propose a scheme for measuring gravity at the sub-millimeter scale extracted from the Rabi spectrum based on Super-Bloch oscillations of atoms in the OLC. Our proposal can be realized on the existing OLC platform without significant change. Under realistic existing experimental parameters of 87Sr OLC, we determine the optimal experimental conditions and obtain a sensitivity of 5μGal/Hz in the quantum projection noise limit, which is 50 times better than the previous method at the sub-millimeter scale under the same consideration. Another advantage of our proposal is that it is insensitive to the noise of the lattice laser, which contributes to the major uncertainty of the previous measurement (PRA 86, 033615). Our research will promote the development of OLC geoscopy.

Measurement of the Elasticooptic Effect of Crystal Using Fiber White-light Interferometry

Abstract:Starting from the index ellipsoid, the elasticooptic effect of crystal is analyzed. The relation between the stress along the optical axis of trigonal crystallographic system and the refractive index is established. The optical property of crystal is anisotropic and the change of refractive index with the stress is little. The ability of the white-light interferometry is explored to measure the refractive index of anisotropic material using high spatial resolving power of the white-light interferometry. Moreover, an improved method using white-light interferometry and all polarization-maintaining fiber Michelson interferometer to measure group refractive index is introduced, using grating displacement sensor to increase the displacement precision of scanning mirror. The change of quartz crystal refractive index is measured under the different outside force, and the elasticooptic coefficient is determined. The elasticooptic coefficients of quartz crystal P33 and P13 are 0.110 and 0.279 respectively, the precision reaches 0.001.

Abstract:The inter-satellite laser ranging interferometer is one of the core components of future gravity missions to achieve high ranging precision. This work builds a preliminary breadboard of the off-axis optical bench design, which integrates the merits of the off-axis optical bench design of GRACE Follow-On mission and other on-axis designs. The study finds that the displacement noise between two optical benches has been reduced to 20nm/Hz at a frequency of 10 mHz, and the differential wavefront sensing noise has been suppressed to 10-5rad/Hz at 1 kHz as well. In addition, the tilt-to-length coupling noise related to the piston effect is restricted within 30 μm/rad, and the relative parallelism error of the transmitting beam and receiving beam is less than 4.5%. The results show that this off-axis optical bench design is an important candidate for China's future gravity missions.
