Abstract:The spiky spherical nickel powders with sharp nano-tips on their surface are dispersed into cement-matrix to fabricate composites with an ultrahigh pressure-sensitive response. The pressure-sensitive stress coefficient and the pressure-sensitive strain coefficient (i.e., gauge factor) of these composites can reach 0.19 MPa-1 and 1930 respectively. This ultrahigh pressure-sensitive effect is attributed to the unique spiky surface morphology of nickel powders. Unlike the normal smooth spherical nickel particles, the sharp nano-tips on the surface of spiky spherical nickel particles can induce field emission and tunneling effects. This leads to highly sensitive responses to compressive stress and strain.
