Abstract:20CrMnTi steel gear used in motor engine was fractured after running for 13 months. The chemical composition, microstructure and micro-hardness of carburized layer were examined respectively. The fracture surface morphology and inclusion composition were analyzed by EPMA and EDS. The results show that the oversize inclusion is the main reason for the gear tooth fracture.

Abstract:Based on 40CrNiMoA steel laser harden technique,an ideal evenly distributed harden layer is obtained along the gear through the laser heat-processing technique.The X-ray analysis is carried for comparing the property between the laser hardened gear(40CrNiMoA) and carburized gear(20Cr2Ni4A).The experiments show that the microcrystal size in laser-hardened gear is obviously smaller than that in carburized gear,while the residual austenite is higher and dislocation density is far higher in the former.It verifies that the fatigue strength of former is better.

Abstract:The fracture reasons of the GCr15 steel cycloid gear were analyzed by means of chemical analysis,metallography examination,grade identification of non-metal inclusions and carbides.The results showed that the macroscopic fracture was belong to brittle fracture;The flake crack caused by dot non-deformation inclusion and network carbide in the steel were the main reasons for brittle fracture of the cycloid gear,and it was verified in the production.

Abstract:Premature failure of conjunction gear in vehicle was reported frequently. The fractured of tooth of the conjunction gear in a vehicle was detected. Marco and micro analysis, chemical composition and mechanical test were employed to determine the causes of the failure of the conjunction gear. The analysis results showed that the lower hardening depth layer was formed in the tooth of conjunction gear due to the inappropriate heat treatment. And the micro cracks were formed on the surface of tooth of the conjunction gear on the action of the impact load. In addition, the upper bainit of material was formed based on the unqualified heat treatment, which reduced the impact toughness of material and accelerated the growth of cracks. The element segregation caused the brittleness of material was increased and the resisting propagation ability of micro crack was reduced. Finally, the tooth of the conjunction gear was fractured. The improvement scheme was proposed to prevent the similar failure based on the results of the study.

Abstract:To reveal the influence mechanism of the grinding surface quality of 20CrMnTi steel components on the tribological characteristics and contact fatigue performance, accelerated tests for sliding friction wear and fatigue damage were carried out. Tribological characteristics and contact fatigue performance get worse with increasing surface roughness while getting better with increasing surface microhardness. Residual compressive stress is conducive to inhibiting the initiation and propagation of cracks and promoting contact fatigue performance. Additionally, mechanical friction, abrasive wear, adhesive wear and fatigue damage coexist and form a competing failure mechanism under the synergistic effect of frictional wear and contact fatigue failure. The damage process mainly manifests as wear, stress concentration induced fatigue, microcracks, pitting, and spalling in the shallow layer. This study is more beneficial to promote the 20CrMnTi steel transmission parts manufacturing products for high precision, low damage, and long life.

Abstract:We conducted a study on the surface compound modification of shot peening and pure carbon DLC coating to simultaneously meet the requirements of wear resistance and fatigue resistance of spline structure. The effects of surface compound modification were investigated on the surface morphology, residual stress profile, microstructure, and nano-indentation hardness of 16Cr3NiWMovNbE gear steel, and conducted a comparative study on fatigue performance. The results show that the surface compound modification inherits the surface morphology and compressive residual stress gradient of shot peening, while the surface residual stress is slightly smaller than that of shot peening. In addition, surface compound modification still reflects the characteristics of high hardness and high fracture resistance of DLC coatings. Under the bending load based on spline tooth root, compared to the original specimen, the fatigue life after shot peening, pure carbon DLC coating, and surface compound modification is increased by 3.68, 2.35, and 3.36 respectively. Although the compound modified surface still maintains the shot peening morphology with a increasing surface roughness and stress concentration coefficient, the 100 μm-depth compressive residual stress profile and the subgrain refinement layer introduced, as well as the hard surface layer with good load-bearing capacity, have played the role of fatigue strengthening.

Abstract:Considering the realistic spalling morphology obtained from the fatigue experiment, a novel dynamic model for spalled gear pairs is established in this paper. Loaded tooth contact analysis method is utilized to evaluate the meshing characteristics of spalled gear pairs. In order to verify the proposed method, the mesh stiffness and contact stress obtained from the proposed method are compared with those obtained from the finite element method and the method in published literature. The mesh stiffness and the non-loaded static transmission error are imported into the geared rotor dynamic model to acquire the dynamic responses. The spectrum characteristics and statistical indicators under different spalling patterns are acquired by the proposed model. A comparison between simulation and experiment is performed to verify the proposed dynamic model. The results show that the simulated fault features agree well with that obtained from the experiment, which indicates that the proposed model is a promising tool for the fault mechanism study of gears with realistic spalling patterns.

Abstract:To study the effect of the surface properties on the bending fatigue performance of heavy-duty gear steel, the authors of this paper used the ultrasonic surface rolling process (USRP) to strengthen 20Cr2Ni4A carburized gear steel. USRP is a novel technique in which the ultrasonic technology is incorporated into the concept of conventional deep rolling. In this study, we illustrated how the surface properties and cross-section mechanical property influence the three-point bending fatigue life of the samples before and after USRP treatment. At the same time, the predicted failure probability-stress-number of cycles (P-S-N) curve was drawn, and the fatigue fracture was analysed. The results show that the fatigue limit increased from 651.36 MPa to 918.88 MPa after USRP treatment. The fatigue source is mainly from the sample interior or surface scratches, and the fatigue performance is positively correlated with the results of the material surface roughness, surface residual stress and surface hardness. At the same time, combined with the change in the phase structure, dislocation structure, residual stress and hardness of the cross section of the material, it is found that the USRP process turns the steel into a gradient material with five layers. Finally, the coupling mechanism between the ultrasonic surface strengthening deformation layer and the carburized layer of 20Cr2Ni4A carburized gear steel is presented, and the grain structure distribution diagram of the section of the 20Cr2Ni4A model after surface strengthening treatment was simulated. The mechanism that influenced the fatigue performance after USRP treatment is explained from the perspectives of the surface and cross section of the samples.

Abstract:The fracture reasons of the 40Cr steel gear shaft were studied by means of analyzing chemical component,observing the microstructure and fracture,determining mechanical properties and hydrogen content.The results show that the macroscopic fracture belongs to brittle fracture;the flake crack caused by excessive hydrogen content and the slag caused by more silicon content in the steel are the main reasons for brittle fracture of the gear shaft.

Abstract:The purpose of this paper is to analyze the dynamic characteristics and the meshing state transition characteristics of spalling defect gears under various lubrication conditions. The time-varying geometric parameters, motion parameters and load distribution of the gears in the state of positive meshing and reverse impact are analyzed. The time-varying meshing stiffness considering the time-varying friction coefficient under elastohydrodynamic lubrication (EHL), mixed lubrication and boundary lubrication are calculated, and the spalling defect is introduced in the stiffness calculation process. The equivalent lubrication model of the gear is established, the switching condition of the lubrication state is derived, and the distribution of the lubrication state in the torque-speed plane is discussed. The multimeshing state dynamic model of the spalling defect gear is established, and the evolution characteristics of the coexistence response and the transition of the meshing state under different lubrication conditions are simulated by using the attraction domain, phase trajectory, meshing force and bifurcation diagram. The results show that the phase trajectory of the gear with the spalling defect is deformed compared with that of the healthy gear. The change of lubrication state has little effect on the phase trajectory and attraction domain of the gear with spalling defect, but has a great influence on the meshing force. At the spalling boundary, the meshing force is changed abruptly, and the worse the lubrication state, the more obvious the mutation. Due to the influence of spalling on tooth stiffness, it will also affect the meshing force in the nonspalling area.

Abstract:20Cr2Ni4A20Cr2Ni4A steel is a kind of low-carbon steel mainly used in manufacturing heavy-duty transmission gears. The carburizing and quenching process is a common strengthening method for gears to get the fine mechanical properties. For the reason of quenching deformation, grinding is used to improve tooth surface accuracy, leading to uneven distribution of surface carbon concentration. In this paper, the different carburizing processes are applied for the 20Cr2Ni4A20Cr2Ni4A samples. Different surface carbon contentSurface carbon content is obtained by grinding with different depths. Three-point bending fatigue test is conducted to study the relationship between crack initiation and surface carbon concentration. The crack initiationCrack initiation and propagation process is monitored by industrial cameras and strain gauges. The number of cycles of crack initiationCrack initiation is positively correlated with the surface carbon content within the range of 1%. And the carbide particles are the main fatigue source.

Abstract:This paper analyzed the reason of the fatigue failure of the carburized 20MnCr5 gear and proposed optimized carburizing process. The number of load cycles of the failure carburized gear was 2.4 million times. The carburized layer was 0.52 mm and dissatisfied the requirements. The number of load cycles of the carburized gear with optimized carburizing process was 8.4 million times. The depth of the carburized layer was 0.75 mm. The shallow depth of carburized layer, low hardness and less retained austenite in the microstructure caused by insufficient carburization were main reasons of the low fatigue life of the failure carburized gear.

Abstract:20Cr2Ni4A alloy is widely used in the manufacturing of heavy-duty gears, although limited information about its machinability during the form-grinding process has been reported. In this work, form-grinding trials on transmission gears of 20Cr2Ni4A alloy under various parameters were conducted. Surface morphology of the gear tooth, surface roughness distribution and microstructure evolution of the machined surface layer were comprehensively studied, and the influence of grinding parameters on grinding performance was investigated. The formation mechanisms of surface/subsurface defects during the form-grinding process, including plastic flow, deep grooves, successive crushing zone, adhesive chips and cavities, were analyzed. Results showed that the change in contact conditions between the grinding wheel and tooth surface led to the decrease in the surface roughness from tooth tip to root. Mechanical force and grinding heat promoted the deformation and refinement of the microstructure within the machined surface layer. With the increase in cutting depth and feed speed, the deformation ratio of the microstructure increased, which was also consistent with the variation trend in the form-grinding temperature.

Abstract:Surface-initiated pitting and subsurface-initiated spalling of M50 bearing steel were investigated, considering transgranular and intergranular damage. The damage initiation and propagation for contact surface with defects produced by different size particles were analyzed using integrated model combined continuum damage method (CDM) and cohesive zone method (CZM). Pitting and spalling mechanism, and defect size effect on damage evolution were discussed. The results indicated both pitting and spalling include intergranular and transgranular damage evolution. As the defect size increases, the RCF mode change from spalling to pitting. Damage evolution mode of spalling and pitting is the plastic deformation and damage accumulation mode, respectively. Moreover, the prediction accuracy for the damage evolution of the integrated model is higher than single-CDM and single-CZM models.

Abstract:The macrograph,microstructure and microhardness of failure plumbing arm of automobile steering gear were analyzed.The results show that microstructure and hardness of the failure arm ZG35 steel are not satisfied with the requirement.The disorderly gears that occur in processing gears lead to non-stationary fit between bevel gears and internal bevel gears.Above factors contribute to plastic deformation,early abrasion,and fracture of the internal bevel gears.

Abstract:The cracking gear of hoisting machine was analyzed through macrostructure,microstruture and hardness examination.The results show that the hardness of the tooth surface is low,the tooth root is not hardening,the hardness and strength are not enough high at the tooth root.There are large nonmetal inclusions in the gear,so the fatigue cracks initiate at the tooth root under combined action of contact stress and bending stress.

Abstract:Gear systems operating at high speeds and under heavy loads are susceptible to continuous multiple tooth surface spalling. The time-varying meshing stiffness (TVMS) model of helical gear pair with multi-tooth spalling fault is established by combining image recognition method and loaded tooth contact analysis (LTCA) method to target the actual form of the spalling fault, and its effectiveness was verified through finite element method (FEM). The flexible helical gear dynamic model is established by utilizing 8-node shell model and Timoshenko beam model to simulate the gear foundations and shafts, the TVMS in multi-tooth spalling fault condition is introduced as the excitation. The mapping relationship between the meshing process, TVMS and vibration response under the influence of rotational speed, spalling surface morphology scale, spalling depth and location of spalling occurrence is analyzed by combining simulation and experimental results. As the rotational speed increases, the specific meshing frequency coincides with the natural frequency of the gear system, leading to the phenomenon of superharmonic resonance. Continuous multi-tooth spalling fault results in continuous time-domain shocks and the meshing frequency modulation of the rotational frequency of the gear with spalling fault. In the absence of bottoming out, the increase in spalling surface morphology scale exerts a more pronounced influence on the vibration characteristics of the helical gear system compared to the increase in spalling depth. The research results can provide theoretical basis for gear system fault diagnosis.

Abstract:A deep gradient wear-resistant layer is applied to 20CrMnTi gear steel with high hardness and thick case. The tribological properties of wear-resistant layers are studied with different relative rolling-sliding ratios. The results indicate that the overall wear resistance of the deep-gradient-layer sample is 1.8–6 times higher than that of the conventional heat treatment sample. The deep-gradient-layer sample is less sensitive to tangential force compared with the conventional heat treatment sample and the work hardening degree is decreased to 41.8%, 60.7% and 62.6% with different relative rolling-sliding ratios. The wear mechanism of the conventional heat treatment sample is mainly surface failure caused by contact fatigue, which is manifested by pitting and surface exfoliation. The wear mechanism of the deep-gradient-layer sample is surface failure caused by scratch, which causes surface bruising and ploughing.

Abstract:For 18Cr2Ni4WA steel gear,three kinds of shot peening technology were researched.The residual stress and distribution,the retained austenite content and distribution,the microstructure and distribution,the microhardness and distribution of shoting peening layer and the roughness of shot peening surface were analyzed and tested.The optimized shot peening technology of 0.05Amm steel shot and 0.18Amm ceramic shot was acquired,which provided the technical data for guiding the production.
