Abstract:Water is either the principal agent responsible for the deterioration of concrete or the principal medium by which aggressive agents (such as chloride or sulfate ions) are transported into concrete, especially near an unsaturated concrete surface. For concrete structures in cold environment, cracks induced by freeze-thaw cycling can format interconnecting flow paths and allow more water to penetrate into the concrete. This paper develops a mesoscopic truss network model to simulate water absorption process of concrete after frost attack. In this model, concrete is treated as a three-phase composite, composing of mortar, coarse aggregates and the interface layer between them. The effect of frost attack on water absorption amount and ingress depth is satisfactorily simulated. The comparison of predicted results with experimental findings indicates that the truss network model on meso-scale is a good option for substances transport in damaged concrete. © 2009 Taylor & Francis Group.
