Abstract:2Cr13 stainless steel with 3% TiC addition has been synthesized by in-situ reaction during melting process. The distribution of TiC particles in the steel is uniform and interfacial bonding between TiC reinforcement and steel is strong. For 2Cr13 stainless steel, the addition of TiC caused a room strength increase of about 10 percent, but slight decrease of ductility. The sliding friction and wear properties of the strengthened steel were studied using a block-on-ring apparatus. Experimental results show that TiC particles exposed on the sliding surface of the strengthened steel supported the load, thus preventing the matrix from severe wear. Compared with the unreinforced matrix, the strengthened steel had stable and comparatively lower friction coefficient and wear-resistance had been multiplied 3 times and over.
