Abstract:To enhance the compactness of the micro-reactors for hydrogen production via methanol steam reforming (SMR) for fuel cell, a novel micro-reactor with micro-pin-fin arrays (MPFAR) is designed and fabricated based on the micro thixo-forming technology. A three-dimensional model is adopted in the numerical analysis to investigate the heat and mass transfer in the micro-reactor. The results show that the methanol conversion in the MPFAR is higher than that in a micro-channel reactor, the velocity and temperature distribution is uniform in the catalyst support. Higher reaction temperature and contact time result in higher methanol conversion and CO molar fraction at the outlet, while a higher steam to methanol (SC-1) molar ratio results in a lower CO molar fraction. Finally, experiments are conducted to test the performance of the MPFAR for hydrogen production. The experimental results agree well with the simulated ones, which validate the accuracy of the simulation model. When the SC-1 molar ratio and the contact time are 1.2 and 0.12 S. respectively, the methanol conversion of the MPFAR reaches to 87.5% with the hydrogen molar fraction of about 75% at the outlet, which is suitable for the application in the fuel cell system. Abstract:With the continuous development of human society, the shortages of fossil resource and environmental pollution are increasingly prominent. Hydrogen is a clean and efficient alternative energy, among various hydrogen production technologies, methanol reforming has been regarded as a promising candidate to produce hydrogen for daily energy supply due to its low cost and safe transportation. In this review, we discuss the sources of methanol and the methods of methanol reforming for hydrogen production. Then, we focus on the catalysts for methanol reforming and their preparation methods. Particular attention is paid to the structural design and manufacturing process to make methanol reforming microreactors. We also summarize recent studies on the practical applications of methanol reforming technologies, as well as the capture and utilization of the generated carbon to reduce its emission. Finally, the prospect challenges of methanol reforming for highly efficient hydrogen production technologies and contribution to the “double carbon” goals and the challenges are discussed. In summary, this review will be conducive to the development of hydrogen-methanol economy for practical and industry applications.
Effects of Structural Parameters on the Performance of a Micro-Reactor with Micro-Pin-fin Arrays (MPFAR) for Hydrogen Production

Abstract:To enhance the energy conversion efficiency of the micro-reactor with micro-pin-fin arrays (MPFAR) for hydrogen production, the effect of structural parameters (the height of the micro-pin-fin, the transverse and longitudinal center distance between two adjacent micro-pin-fins) on the performance of the MPFAR for hydrogen production is investigated. Based on the geometrical parameters, a theoretical model of material balance for hydrogen production in the MPFAR is established. The calculated results show that with the increase of the micro-pin-fin height or the decrease of the distance between two adjacent micro-pin-fins, the methanol conversion rate and the CO molar fraction increase. The methanol conversion rate increases by about 10% when the height of micro-pin-fin increases from 0.2 to 1 mm or the center distance between the two adjacent micro-pin-fins increases from 1.2 to 2.6 mm. The comparisons between the experimental and calculated results validate the theoretical model of material balance utilized in this study. Finally, a better geometrical structure of micro-pin-fin arrays is obtained, in which the height of the micro-pin-fin, the transverse and longitudinal center distances between two adjacent micro-pin-fins are 1.0 mm, 1.2 mm and 1.2 mm, respectively. The hydrogen yield in the MPFAR can reach about 8.3 ml/min under the condition that the methanol conversion rate is above 90%. Copyright (c) 2012, Hydrogen Energy Publications, LLC. Abstract:Advancements in microreactor technology emerge as a promising solution for low-cost hydrogen (H 2 ) production, and there is significant progress being made towards developing microreactor technology for onboard H 2 production. It is possible that fully matured microreactor technology for onboard H 2 production will become available in the next decade. This review summarizes the key numerical findings in the advancements of research on H 2 production by steam reforming in microreactors. Although numerous studies are being conducted on microreactors for different fuels, flow altering structures, and reaction parameters for steam reforming, they still lag in considering all parameters. This study aims to comprehend all performance influencing parameters, both structural and reaction, to better understand the selection of a microreactor. Based on the findings of this study, it is recommended to use methanol as the fuel and an optimal design that is easy to fabricate while also offering high performance. Since performance is influenced by numerous parameters, identifying the best conditions for the reaction and optimal structure can be achieved through the use of artificial intelligence (AI) techniques.

Abstract:Aiming at fluid heat and mass transfer in micro-reactor with micro-pin-fin arrays for hydrogen production by reforming, a theoretical model about the heat and mass transfer in micro-channel was established. A CFD software Fluent was used to calculate the heat and mass transfer of different structure and arrangement mode of micro-pin-fin arrays in micro-channel, and the effect of different micro-channel structure on the friction coefficient and Nusselt number of micro-channel was analyzed under lower Reynolds number condition. The results indicate that, with the increase of the inlet velocity, the friction coefficient decreases while the Nusselt number increases. When the inlet velocity is lower, the height and transverse center-to-center distance of micro-pin-fin arrays have little effect on Nusselt number. When the inlet velocity is higher, with the increase of longitudinal and transverse center-to-center distance of micro-pin-fin arrays, the friction coefficient decreases, with the increase of the height of micro-pin-fins(except 1. 3 mm), both friction coefficient and Nusselt number increase firstly and then decrease. The analysis results provide the theoretical basis for the design and fabrication of micro-channel reactor with micro-pin-fin arrays for hydrogen production by reforming.

Abstract:This paper will put forward a device installed into the fuel system, which can use the sliding electric arc to electrolyze the natural gas to make hydrogen and then blend them in the fuel pipe for final combustion. This device can help to make a new type of HCNG engine fuel system, which electrolyses the single fuel (natural gas) partly to make appropriate-rate hydrogen for combustion. And in this paper, this new fuel system will be described in detail. The picture of sliding electric arc is shown in the end of this paper.

Abstract:Methanol steam reforming (MSR) has been used for in-situ hydrogen production, while hydrogen purification remains a technical challenge to limit the applications of using hydrogen for fuel cells. This study presents a pure hydrogen generation system (PHGS) by integrating MSR and hydrogen purification modules, this system enables low-temperature reforming and high-temperature purification to achieve high yield and recovery of hydrogen. To investigate the combined effects of feedstock flow rates and pressure on MSR and purification, the performance of each module and overall PHGS system were tested. The results showed that PHGS can stably produce high purity hydrogen (>99.99%) under different conditions, the synergistic effects of two modules lead to hydrogen yield exceeding the numerical sum of individual modules. At methanol feed rate of 1.00 g/min and system pressure of 5.0 bar, the pure hydrogen flow rate, CO content, pure hydrogen yield, hydrogen recovery and thermal power output were tested about 1.70 +/- 0.01 L/min, 2.4 +/- 0.1 ppm, 81.1 +/- 0.5%, 87.6 +/- 0.5% and 350 W. The PHGS can deliver up to 500 W of thermal power and is suitable for small range-extended electric vehicles. Our work on the developed PHGS can provide a significant reference for future practical applications of systems combining MSR and membrane purification.

Abstract:A novel design of a silicon-based micro-reformer for onboard hydrogen generation from ethanol is presented in this work. The micro-reactor is fully fabricated with mainstream MEMS technology and consists of an active low-thermal-mass structure suspended by an insulating membrane. The suspended structure includes an embedded resistive metal heater and an array of ca. 20k vertically aligned through-silicon micro-channels per square centimetre. Each micro-channel is 500 μm in length and 50 μm in diameter allowing a unique micro-reformer configuration that presents a total surface per projected area of 16 cm(2) cm(-2) and per volume of 320 cm(2) cm(-3). The walls of the micro-channels become the active surface of the micro-reformer when coated with a homogenous thin film of Rh-Pd/CeO2 catalyst. The steam reforming of ethanol under controlled temperature conditions (using the embedded heater) and using the micro-reformer as a standalone device are evaluated. Fuel conversion rates above 94% and hydrogen selectivity values of ca. 70% were obtained when using operation conditions suitable for application in micro-solid oxide fuel cells (micro-SOFCs), i.e. 750 °C and fuel flows of 0.02 mlL min(-1) (enough to feed a one watt power source).

Abstract:Abstract The clean energy demand worldwide has increased significantly with the increase in population. One of the most potential candidates to fulfill the energy requirements is renewable resources, and the most environmentally friendly fuel is hydrogen. This study concentrates on hydrogen technology and introduces its production, storage, transportation, and gridline support application. Results show that methane steam reforming and electrolysis of water are common hydrogen production methods. The electrolysis of water technique can be close to renewable energy source because of device simplicity. In addition, produced hydrogen gases or liquid are stored in natural sites such as salt caverns or vessels made of metals, polymers, and composites. The composite hydrogen vessel benefits from light weight and high-pressure limit for movable storage such as transportation, while the low-cost metal container fits the purpose of stationary storage. The fuel cell can power electric motors for busses and cars without a carbon footprint by burning hydrogen gases. Finally, the physical storage of hydrogen gases or liquid can have high scalability to store seasonal fluctuation of renewable energy to gridline.

Abstract:This paper presents a novel thermally autonomous reformed methanol fuel cell (RMFC) system for highly efficient hydrogen production and power generation by integrating a self-heating methanol steam reforming (MSR) microreactor and a high temperature proton exchange membrane fuel cell (HT-PEMFC). The RMFC system would exhibit significant potential for portable use due to its high energy efficiency, compact size and long lifetime. The structural design of the RMFC system including MSR microreactor and HT-PEMFC are studied, and a work flow is developed to enable the startup and stable power output of the system. After that, the microreactor and HTPEMFC are fabricated, and then integrated to develop the system. Experimental testing results showed that the microreactor can produce a maximum reformate gas of 541 ml/min with a methanol conversion larger than 93.8 %., while maintaining the carbon monoxide concentration below 2 %. The RMFC system can start up within 17 min, the temperature fluctuation is lower than 6.28 % and the maximum output power can reach up to 32.9 W. As for a conservatively designed rating power of 25 W, the calculated energy conversion efficiency of the system can reach about 28.5 %, with good stability during long-term operations.

Abstract:Methanol steam reforming has been used for in-situ hydrogen production and supply for proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC), while its power density and energy efficiency still needs to be improved. Herein, we present a novel methanol steam reforming microreactor based on the stacked wave sheets and copper foam for highly efficient hydrogen production. The structural of stacked wave sheets and copper foam, and their roles in the microreactor are described, methanol catalytic combustion is adopted to supply heat for methanol steam reforming reaction and enables the microreactor to work automatically. For catalyst carrier, a fractal body-centered cubic model is established to study the flow characteristics and chemical reaction performances of the copper foam with coated catalyst layer. Both simulation and experimental results showed that the reformate flowrate increases with the increasing of microreactor layers and methanol solution flowrate, the discrepancies of methanol conversion between simulation and experimental tests are less than 7%. Experimental results demonstrated that the reformate flowrate of 1.0 SLM can be achieved with methanol conversion rate of 65%, the output power of the microreactor is 159 W and power density is 395 W/L. The results obtained in this study indicates that stacked wave sheets and copper foam can uniform the reactant flow and improve the hydrogen production performances. Abstract:Abstract Because of its convenience, high efficiency and low cost, small-scale skid-mounted hydrogen generator has become a hydrogen-production object of intense research efforts worldwide and has broad prospects in application. We analyze the technical points and difficulties in detail of this kind of on-site compact hydrogen generators from natural gas, by each section in the production process. It is suitable for integrated hydrogen refueling stations due to easy transportation and installation. Related applications are introduced by comparing the technical parameters of recent typical products in the world. Meanwhile, we calculate that the full life cycle cost of hydrogen from skid-mounted hydrogen generator from natrual gas can achieve less than 40CNY / kgH2, which is more economic than other possible hydrogen sources and transportation modes of a hydrogen refueling station. Although the advantages mentioned above, we point out that technology innovation is still desirable, especially in the process of reforming, automatic control, system integration and catalysis, to realize the minimization of skid-mounted hydrogen generators base on natural gas, for its further and wider application in the future.

Abstract:In this paper, a hybrid fuel cell system integrated with methanol steam reformer and methanation reactor is demonstrated. Methanol steam reformer employed in this system is to produce hydrogen-rich reformate in connection with a methanation reactor to reduce the carbon monoxide content effectively, and the reformate gas is sent into a low-temperature polymer electrolyte fuel cell for direct electric power generation. The optimum conditions (temperature, water to methanol ratio, and space velocity) for methanol steam reforming (MSR) reaction and methanation (MET) reaction are verified by experiments. A comparison between pure hydrogen, reformate surrogate, and actual reformate is performed. The results show that the power density of this hybrid system achieves 245.2 mW/cm2 while it achieves 268.8 mW/cm2 when employing pure hydrogen as the fuel. An alternative novel method to solve the problem of hydrogen storage and transportation is provided and the in-situ hydrogen production and utilizing through low-temperature fuel cell system is realized, which is helpful to accelerate the commercialization process of the fuel cell.

Abstract:Methanol steam reforming hydrogen production provides a solution for the portable development of hydrogen–oxygen fuel cells with the working mode of “on-site hydrogen production and ready-to-use”. In this paper, the catalytic combustion chamber is redesigned, and the autothermal nozzle microchannel reactor (ANMR) system is proposed for efficient methanol steam reforming hydrogen produced. The performance superiority of ANMR is demonstrated by comparison with traditional reactors, and the optimization scheme of the reactor structure is studied. The results show that ANMR improves the overall reforming performance by improving the temperature performance. Compared to the conventional reactor, the ANMR optimizes the reactor structure and operating conditions, which results in the catalyst of the combustion chamber being reduced by 40%, the hydrogen production being increased by 40.34 L/h, and the methanol conversion rate being increased by 22.49%. Consequently, the design theory and control method of the velocity field, concentration field, and temperature field coupling system are developed, which is of great significance for the portability of hydrogen production.

Abstract:Mathematical modeling and simulation analysis of the dimethyl ether steam reforming reaction system were carried out in the study. The numerical results of simulation and experiment were consistent. The effects of reaction conditions on the conversion of dimethyl ether and hydrogen production were analyzed. The internal structure of the reforming reactor was adjusted to obtain higher hydrogen production efficiency. The study established the reforming hydrogen production industry system, and analyzed the thermal efficiency of the system. The results show that when the temperature of the conversion bed is 673 K, the inlet flow rate of the mixture gas is 0.5 ms−1 and the ratio of water to ether is 3, the dimethyl ether steam reforming reaction system could obtain the dimethyl ether conversion rate of 90%, the hydrogen production rate of 88% and system thermal efficiency of 74%.

Abstract:At present, the infrastructure of hydrogen production, storage and transportation is poor. Fuel reforming for hydrogen production from liquid fossil fuels such as kerosene, petrol and diesel is of great significance for wide application of on-board fuel cell and distributed energy resources. In this work, the produced and heat released of kerosene, petrol and diesel reformed by different reforming methods (autothermal reforming, partial oxidation, steam reforming) were studied by means of thermodynamic analysis. Based on the thermodynamic analysis, the effect of reforming methods on the system's ideal thermal efficiency are analysed. The results show that the hydrogen concentration of syngas obtained from steam reforming is highest regardless of the fuel types. The hydrogen yielded by per unit volume of diesel is largest under same reforming method. Autothermal reforming has the largest ideal thermal efficiency among three reforming methods.

Abstract:Technology of hydrogen production from ethanol reforming for fuel cells application was summarized. The position and advantages of hydrogen production from ethanol reforming in the technologies of hydrogen sources for fuel cells was analyzed firstly; second, the reactions network of the mechanism of hydrogen production from ethanol reforming were sum up; then the development of relative catalysts, Pd membranes and materials was induced in system; and the two types systems of ethanol reforming PEMFC were sum up comparably. Some potential problems of ethanol reforming PEMFC system were discussed initially, and the future of ethanol reforming PEMFC system was predicted.

Abstract:micro-reactor has drawn more and more attention in recent years due to the process intensification on basic transport phenomena in micro-channels, which would often lead to the improved reactor performance. Steam reforming of methane (SRM) in micro-reactor has great potential to realize a low-cost, compact process for hydrogen production via an evident shortening of reaction time from seconds to milliseconds. This work focuses on the detailed modeling and simulation of a micro-reactor design for SRM reaction with the integration of a micro-channel for Rh-catalyzed endothermic reaction, a micro-channel for Pt-catalyzed exothermic reaction and a wall in between with Rh or Pt-catalyst coated layer. The elementary reaction kinetics for SRM process is adopted in the CFD model, while the combustion channel is described by global reaction kinetics. The model predictions were quantitatively validated by the experimental data in the literature. For the extremely fast reactions in both channels, the simulations indicated the significance of the heat conduction ability of the reactor wall as well as the interplay between the exothermic and endothermic reactions (e.g., the flow rate ratio of fuel gas to reforming gas). The characteristic width of 0.5mm is considered to be a suitable channel size to balance the trade-off between the heat transfer behavior in micro-channels and the easy fabrication of micro-channels.

In this paper, a hydrogen production system for dimethyl ether self-heating steam reforming is proposed, using a spiral tube reactor in which the oxidation of dimethyl ether occurs in the spiral tube, and the exothermic oxidation of dimethyl ether is used to provide heat for the dimethyl ether steam reforming hydrogen production reaction. A numerical model of the hydrogen production system for dimethyl ether self-heating reforming is developed, the model is simulated and analyzed, the accuracy of the model is verified through experiments, the influence of various parameters and on the system is analyzed, and the system is optimized. The results show that the proposed system can solve the problems of high energy consumption, low hydrogen yield and difficult reaction control faced by traditional autothermal reforming hydrogen production, and the system can achieve 87.79% dimethyl ether conversion rate, 84.94% hydrogen yield and 85.94% system thermal efficiency.
