Abstract:The microdischarge process and the vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) emission properties of dielectric-barrier-discharge-type flat fluorescent lamps (FFLs) are investigated by shooting the spatiotemporally resolved images of a microdischarge in an FFL filled with Ne-Xe (10%) gas mixture of 85 kPa with a high-speed intensified charge-coupled device camera and by measuring the VUV emission spectra at various gas pressures and driving parameters with a vacuum monochromator and a photomultiplier tube. It was found that a microdischarge was generated at a protrusion on the cathode at first, diffused to the anode side afterward, and exhibited a uniform glow discharge pattern. The measured results of the VUV spectra show that, as the total gas pressure increases, the 147-nm resonance emission gradually decreases, while the continuum emission centered at 173 nm rapidly increases, which cause both of the intensity and the efficiency of the VUV emission to increase. As the driving voltage amplitude increases, there exists a maximum VUV emission efficiency value. At a total gas pressure of 70 kPa, as the driving pulse frequency increases from 50 to 130 kHz, the spectral intensities of the VUV emission initially increase and then gradually tend to saturate at 90 kHz.

Abstract:The behavior of materials heated by X rays to high energy density state is a very interesting and active research field for application in incrtial fusion, astrophysics and so . on. Some new experiments on X-ray-ablated C 8H8samples were designed and performed on Xingguang one beam frequency-tripled Nd:glass laser facility. The ablation velocity and the mass absorption coefficient of C8H8foam, and the self-emission spectrum of C8H8foil were experimentally obtained. The experiments and results are briefly described.

Abstract:This paper aims to study the feasibility of two solid waste which are boron mud and fly ash as desulfurization absorbents by microwave. Under the optimal operating conditions, the desulfurization removal efficiency achieves 88.2%. The microstructure of before and after the adsorbent reaction are analyzed by SEM. Base on the experiment research, the mechanisms of simultaneous desulfurization is investigated in this paper. The research provides a new approach to resource recycling of boron mud and fly ash. And the results have great significance to recycled solid waste and preserve the sustainable development of industrial economy and environment.
Research and Development of Low Wattage Ceramic Metal Halide Lamps

Abstract:This paper introduces the key technologies of low wattage ceramic metal halide lamps(CMHs),which include sovling the matched-sealing of Nb and the ceramic capillary with Dy2O3-Al2O3-SiO2 frit system,controlling frit leakage and corrosion,solving the ignition problem with radioactive gas 85Kr filling in the arc tubes.In order to optimize the parameters of CMHs,some diagnostic methods were used,such as X-ray transmission,infrared imaging,X-ray tomography,and scanning electron microscope.The CMHs with power of 20,35,70 and 150W have been put into mass production,whose parameters are better than those in the national standard.The CMHs with 70W power and 3,000K color temperature have luminous efficacy 89 lm/W,color rendering 92,lumen maintenance 82% at 8,000h.

Abstract:The feasibilities of two solid waste, smelting slag and fly ash, as desulfurization and denitrogenation absorbents and additives by microwave were investigated. The influences of operating parameters were also studied. Under the optimal operating conditions, the removal efficiencies of 65.9% and 65.0% were achieved for S02 and NOx respectively. Scanning Electron Microscope and energy dispersive spectroscopy were employed to study the micro-area characteristics of fly ash, smelting slag absorbent and the spent absorbent. In addition, the mechanisms of simultaneous removal of S02 and NOx were investigated. The microwave-modified absorbent in fact played the role of solid catalyst in the process of S02 and NOx treatment from fume. S02 and NOx were oxidized because of microwave-modified absorbent catalytic effect.

Abstract:The KrCl* excimer lamp (UV222) is a promising alternative of low-pressure mercury lamp (UV254) for UV-based advanced oxidation processes (UV-AOPs), because it is mercury-free and has high photon energy. But there lacks a comprehensive assessment of UV222-AOPs based on different radicals. Herein, the properties (e.g., oxidant decay and innate radical quantum yield), and micropollutant degradation, were comprehensively studied for representative oxidants (i.e., hydrogen peroxide, persulfate (PDS), monochloramine, and free active chlorine (FAC)) under UV222 irradiation. UV222 outperformed UV254 for the activation of oxidants with 2.6-14.4 times fluence-based kinetic constant (kF). The main reason of enhanced activation varied with oxidants: higher UV absorbance for H2O2, higher innate quantum yield for monochloramine and FAC, and both reasons for PDS. Overall, PDS was the optimum oxidant under UV222 for the degradation of 8 representative micropollutants because of effective promotion of radical formation, as confirmed by radical competitive kinetics and modeling simulations. In real water, UV222/PDS still show advantages than UV254/PDS in terms of micropollutant elimination efficacy (3.2-5.3 times) and energy consumption (33.9 %-57.6 % lower) though it was more inhibited by water constituents via competing for UV222 photons. This study fills gaps in photochemistry knowledge and will facilitate engineering practice of UV222-AOPs.
A Compact Microwave-Driven UV Lamp for Dental Light Curing

Abstract:The size of current microwave-driven UV lamps limits their direct application in dental light curing. This article proposes a coaxial structure to miniaturize the UV lamp. First, the Drude model and the finite difference time domain algorithm were used to analyze the multi-physical field coupling and the complex field distribution within the lamp. Second, the dimensional parameters of the lamp were optimized, which enabled the lamp to be miniaturized and operate with high performance. Third, to analyze the sensitivity of the lamp, the effects of input power, gas pressure, and gas composition on its performance were investigated. It was found that an input power of 6 watts was enough to light the bulb with over 90% energy utilization. Finally, to verify the feasibility, an experimental system was set up. The lamp was successfully lit in the experiment, and its spectral output was tested. The results show that the microwave-driven UV lamp based on a coaxial structure is miniaturized and broad-spectrum, making it suitable for clinical dental light curing.

Abstract:This paper examined the photolysis of gaseous butyl acetate by built-in microwave discharge electrodeless lamps. Bromine and iodine lamps were used to investigate the effects of microwave input power, inlet concentration, gas residence time, and different filling materials on butyl acetate decomposition and energy yield. Water vapor and ammonia were utilized as additional chemicals to determine if they can improve removal efficiency. Built-in structure and external structure were also compared. When the gas flow velocity is 0.025 m/s, and the inlet concentration is 1.5 mg/m(3), the removal efficiency of butyl acetate can reach over 78%, which is the highest in this study. Additional water vapor and ammonia can hardly improve the degradation. To some extent, built-in MDELs are better than external MDELs. The results will help promote the study of microwave discharge electrodeless lamps and their effect on the degradation of gaseous pollutants. Maybe, as the research goes on, it could realize the span from laboratory scale to practical application, and will become an advanced technology for the gaseous pollutants control.

Abstract:The photolysis of simulating carbon disulfide malodorous gas was studied under UV irradiation emitted by microwave electrodeless lamps. Experiments results show that the photolysis of carbon disulfide is determined by the initial concentration, residence time and gas humidity. When air velocity is 0.2 m/s, initial concentration is about 100 mg/m3, and gas humidity is about 40%, the conversion ratio of carbon disulfide can reach to 75% with microwave electrodeless mercury lamp and 50% with microwave electrodeless iodine lamp. The mechanism of carbon disulfide photolysis was further studied. It is concluded that the photolysis of carbon disulfide is probably a collective action of direct photolysis and *OH radical oxidation.
A VUV light source for enhanced production of metastable krypton and xenon beams

Abstract:We demonstrate excitation of metastable krypton and xenon beams using a vacuum ultraviolet lamp and directly compare the performance of this method to metastable excitation based on a radiofrequency-driven plasma discharge. In our apparatus, lamp-based metastable excitation outperforms the plasma discharge across a wide range of beam flux values relevant for Atom Trap Trace Analysis (ATTA). Moreover, we do not observe significant degradation in lamp performance after over 160 hours of operation. We find that lamp-based excitation is particularly advantageous at the smallest and largest beam fluxes tested, demonstrating the utility of this approach both for improving krypton ATTA and for enabling the detection of radioactive xenon isotopes using ATTA. Finally, we demonstrate an additional enhancement to lamp-based metastable excitation efficiency and stability by applying an external magnetic field.

Abstract:The UV radiation efficiency of excimer UV lamps is relatively low.In order to improve the efficiency from the aspect of power supply,the influence of driven type(sine / pulse) and pulse power supply parameters(polarity,voltage amplitude,frequency) on the excimer KrCl*(222nm) UV radiation have been studied experimentally.The results show that: the efficiency of UV radiation under pulse driven is 86.5% higher than that under sinusoidal driven;the polarity of power supply has no significant impact on working conditions of the lamp;with the increase of the supply voltage amplitude,UV radiation intensity increased,while the efficiency of UV radiation decreased;and with the increase of frequency,excimer UV light intensity increased,while the efficiency did not change significantly.The article also gives a brief analysis and theoretical explanations of the experimental results.

Abstract:The photolysis of simulating low concentration of hydrogen sulfide malodorous gas was studied under UV irradiation emitted by self-made microwave discharge electrodeless lamps (i.e. microwave UV electrodeless mercury lamp (185/253.7nm) and iodine lamp (178.3/180.1/183/184.4/187.6/206.2nm)). Experiments results showed that the removal efficiency (ηH2S) of hydrogen sulfide was decreased with increasing initial H2S concentration and increased slightly with gas residence time; H2S removal efficiency was decreased dramatically with enlarged pipe diameter. Under the experimental conditions with pipe diameter of 36mm, gas flow rate of 0.42standardls−1, ηH2S was 52% with initial H2S concentration of 19.5mgm−3 by microwave mercury lamp, the absolute removal amount (ARA) was 4.30μgs−1, and energy yield (EY) was 77.3mgkWh−1; ηH2S was 56% with initial H2S concentration of 18.9mgm−3 by microwave iodine lamp, the ARA was 4.48μgs−1, and the EY was 80.5mg kWh−1. The main photolysis product was confirmed to be SO42- with IC.

Abstract:An experimental study on microwave plasma at atmospheric pressure was conducted by employing optical emission spectroscopy. Based on a microwave plasma generation device developed for nanoparticle synthesis, we studied the influence of input microwave power and gas flow rate on the optical emission behaviors and electron temperature of plasma using Ar, He, and N2 as working gas, respectively. The physics behind these behaviors was discussed. The results are useful in characterizing microwave plasma at atmospheric pressure and can be used for improving nanoparticle synthesis system for commercial use in the future.

Abstract:Traditional low power-microwave plasma torch(MPT) excitation source of atomic emission spectrometry was shown to be good for the introduction of dry aerosols, but poor for wet sample aerosols. In this work, some significant modifications have been made to traditional MPT. A new MPT excitation source working at kilowatt microwave power has been developed. The kilowatt MPT source can sustain stable plasmas with double or even more filaments, presenting a “bell” form, where the region around the converging point is the optimum region for analysis. The tolerance to aqueous aerosol of the torch is enhanced significantly compared to the traditional one. Therefore, the desolvation system that the low power MPT source has to be relied on can be gotten rid of. A set of favorable detection results have been obtained with direct wet sample aerosol introduction. The kilowatt MPT source is expected to become a practical excitation source for atomic emission spectrometry that will be widely used.

Abstract:The ultraviolet and visible radiant power of T6 high output low pressure mercury lamp filled with 133—1333 Pa Ne-Ar or pure Ar buffer gas were measured,and the radiant efficiency was calculated with Keitz formula.Cold spot temperature,discharge current and pressure dependence of input power and 254nm radiant efficiency were determined.The maximum 254nm radiant efficiency(above 40%) was achieved at cold spot temperature 45—48℃.The radiant efficiency decreases with increase of discharge current and pressure.Input power of the lamps filled with Ne-Ar buffer gas was 50 W/m higher compared with those filled with pure Ar,which provide more UV radiation.Moreover,total radiant efficiency of other Hg lines ranging from 265—579nm was below 10% under various discharge conditions.

Abstract:High output low pressure mercury (LPM) discharge UV lamps have been briefly introduced. In order to measure the 254 nm radiant efficiency simply and preciously, Keitz formula was used and its advantage was illustrated. The LPM lamps had outer diameter of 19 mm (T6). The buffer gases are neon (65%) and argon (35%) with total pressure 1-10 Torr (133-1333 Pa). The lamps were operated with cold spot temperatures from 20°C to 80°C and discharge current from 0.8 A to 2.0 A. The electric field, input power, 254 nm UV irradiance and irradiance of other Hg lines from 265 to 579 nm in positive column were measured. The radiant power of each wavelength can be calibrated according to the 254 nm output and the Keitz formula. It was shown that the radiant efficiency of 254 nm can reach a maximum of above 40% at cold spot temperature 45-47 °C and current 1.6 A for filling pressure less than 3 Torr. The optimal mercury vapor pressure was 1.2 to 1.4 Pa. The output percentage of other Hg lines was below 5%. With the decrease of buffer gas pressure, the 254 nm radiant efficiency increased obviously.

Abstract:The spatiotemporal motion characteristics of the kilowatt argon microwave plasma torch with the air carrier gas(kW-AC-ArMPT)and the behavior of the plasma filaments are investigated with a digital single-lens reflex(SLR)camera and a high-speed camera.Along with the introduction of the air,both the volume of the central channel and the rotational frequency of the plasma filament are increased.Besides,the excitation temperature(Texc),rotational temperature(Trot),and density of electron number(ne)of the kW-AC-ArMPT are measured with optical diagnosis.It is clearly shown that the introduction of air contributed to the rise of Trot and ne of the plasma,which is beneficial to improving the analytical performance of the plasma.Then the detection limits of some heavy metal elements are measured by kW-AC-ArMPT,which are in the ppb range.The experimental results show that the kW-ArMPT has a high tolerance to air injection at least 1.0 L/min,which allows the direct extraction of air from the environment for analysis and therefore has the potential for online and in-situ detection of ambient air quality and industrial exhaust gases.
Corrosion effects of MIx on ceramic arc tubes of metal halide lamps

Abstract:Ceramic metal halide (CMH) lamps, filled with metal iodide (MIx), are efficient, energy saving light sources with high efficacy and high color rendering index (CRI). The biggest drawback of CMH lamps now is the corrosion on ceramic arc tubes. The corrosion effects of different MIx on the ceramic arc tubes of metal halide lamps are very important for the design of long lifetime lamps. In this paper, we studied corrosion via the molten salt in CMH lamps which is not well studied in earlier research. Sample lamps filled with NaI+DyI3, NaI+CeI3 and a control group of commercial CMH lamps with color temperature 3000 K have been aged for 10 kh in total, and the X-ray images of the arc tubes have been taken every 1 kh. The X-ray images are processed by AutoCAD in order to calculate the corrosion areas. By comparing the corrosion areas, we have found the sequence of corrosion speed of MIx in this experiment is: CeI3 > DyI3 > 3000 K commercial lamps. Besides, the effects of different filling compositions on photometric parameters of lamps are studied too, including luminous flux, efficacy, CRI and correlated color temperature.
