Abstract:In this paper, we develop a method to verify David's integrability condition for certain Beltrami differentials without using Petersen puzzles. Using this method and trans-quasiconformal surgery, we prove that for any David type rotation number, the boundary of the Siegel disk of $f_{\theta}(z) = e^{2 \pi i \theta} \sin (z)$ is a Jordan curve which passes through exactly two critical points $\pi/2$ and $-\pi/2$.

Abstract:Let $\alpha$ be an irrational number of sufficiently high type and suppose $P_\alpha(z)=e^{2\pi i\alpha}z+z^2$ has a Siegel disk $\Delta_\alpha$ centered at the origin. We prove that the boundary of $\Delta_\alpha$ is a Jordan curve, and that it contains the critical point $-e^{2\pi i\alpha}/2$ if and only if $\alpha$ is a Herman number.

Abstract:In this note we show that the regular part of the natural extension (in the sense of Lyubich and Minsky) of quadratic map $f(z) = e^{2 \pi i \theta}z + z^2$ with irrational $\theta$ of bounded type has only parabolic leaves except the invariant lift of the Siegel disk. We also show that though the natural extension of a rational function with a Cremer fixed point has a continuum of irregular points, it can not supply enough singularity to apply the Gross star theorem to find hyperbolic leaves.

Abstract:For any irrational $\alpha > 0$ and any initial value $z_{-1} \in \mathbb{C}$, we define a sequence of complex numbers $(z_n)_{n=0}^{\infty}$ as follows: $z_n$ is $z_{n-1} + e^{2 \pi i \alpha n}$ or $z_{n-1} - e^{2 \pi i \alpha n}$, whichever has the smaller absolute value. If both numbers have the same absolute value, the sequence terminates at $z_{n-1}$ but this happens rarely. This dynamical system has astonishingly intricate behavior: the choice of signs in $z_{n-1} \pm e^{2 \pi i \alpha n}$ appears to eventually become periodic (though the period can be large). We prove that if one observes periodic signs for a sufficiently long time (depending on $z_{-1}, \alpha$), the signs remain periodic for all time. The surprising complexity of the system is illustrated through examples.

Abstract:Let $f$ be a transcendental entire function of finite order which has an attracting periodic point $z_0$ of period at least $2$. Suppose that the set of singularities of the inverse of $f$ is finite and contained in the component $U$ of the Fatou set that contains $z_0$. Under an additional hypothesis we show that the intersection of $\partial U$ with the escaping set of $f$ has Hausdorff dimension $1$. The additional hypothesis is satisfied for example if $f$ has the form $f(z)=\int_0^z p(t)e^{q(t)}dt+c$ with polynomials $p$ and $q$ and a constant $c$. This generalizes a result of Barański, Karpińska and Zdunik dealing with the case $f(z)=\lambda e^z$.

Abstract:We extend Thurston's combinatorial criterion for postcritically finite rational maps to a class of rational maps with bounded type Siegel disks. The combinatorial characterization of this class of Siegel rational maps plays a special role in the study of general Siegel rational maps. As one of the applications, we prove that for any quadratic rational map with a bounded type Siegel disk, the boundary of the Siegel disk is a quasi-circle which passes through one or both of the critical points.

Abstract:Let $D \subset {\mathbb R}^d,\: d \geqslant 2,$ be the union of a finite collection of pairwise disjoint strictly convex compact obstacles. Let $\mu_j \in {\mathbb C},\: {\rm Im}\: \mu_j > 0,$ be the resonances of the Laplacian in the exterior of $D$ with Neumann or Dirichlet boundary condition on $\partial D$. For $d$ odd, $u(t) = \sum_j e^{i |t| \mu_j}$ is a distribution in $ \mathcal{D}'({\mathbb R} \setminus \{0\})$ and the Laplace transforms of the leading singularities of $u(t)$ yield the dynamical zeta functions $\eta_{\mathrm N},\: \eta_{\mathrm D}$ for Neumann and Dirichlet boundary conditions, respectively. These zeta functions play a crucial role in the analysis of the distribution of the resonances. Under the non-eclipse condition (1.1), for $d \geqslant 2$ we show that $\eta_{\mathrm N}$ and $\eta_\mathrm D$ admit a meromorphic continuation to the whole complex plane. In the particular case when the boundary $\partial D$ is real analytic, by using a result of Fried (1995), we prove that the function $\eta_\mathrm{D}$ cannot be entire. Following the result of Ikawa (1988), this implies the existence of a strip $\{z \in {\mathbb C}: \: 0 < {\rm Im}\: z \leq\alpha\}$ containing an infinite number of resonances $\mu_j$ for the Dirichlet problem. Moreover, for $\alpha \gg 1$ we obtain a lower bound for the resonances lying in this strip.

Abstract:The critical line of the Riemann zeta function is studied from a new viewpoint. It is found that the ratio between the zeta function at any zero and the corresponding one at a conjugate point has a certain phase and its absolute value is unity. This fact is valid along the whole critical line and only there. The common functional equation is used with the aid of the function ratio between any zero and its negative side pair, a complex conjugate. As a result, an equation is obtained for solving the phase along the critical line.

Abstract:We derive explicit upper bounds for the Riemann zeta-function $\zeta(\sigma + it)$ on the lines $\sigma = 1 - k/(2^k - 2)$ for integer $k \ge 4$. This is used to show that the zeta-function has no zeroes in the region $$\sigma > 1 - \frac{\log\log|t|}{21.233\log|t|},\qquad |t| \ge 3.$$ This is the largest known zero-free region for $\exp(171) \le t \le \exp(5.3\cdot 10^{5})$. Our results rely on an explicit version of the van der Corput $A^nB$ process for bounding exponential sums.
