Abstract:By using a result of Dominguez and Sienra on the topological rigidity of the Sine family, we give a different proof of a result in [8] which says that, for any bounded type irrational number 0 <theta < 1, the boundary of the Siegel disk of e(2 pi i theta) sin(z) is a quasi-circle passing through exactly two critical points pi/2 and -pi/2.

Abstract:We want to discuss various applications of modular forms in topology. The starting point is elliptic genus and its generalizations. The main techniques are the Atiyah-Singer index theorem, the Atiyah-Bott-Segal-Singer Lefschetz fixed point formula, Kac-Moody Lie algebras, modular forms and theta-functions. Just as the representations theory of classical Lie groups has close connections with the Atiyah-Singer index formula as exposed in [A1], the representation theory of loop groups plays very important role in our study. One of the most important new features of loop group representations is the modular invariance of the Kac-Weyl character formula, which allows us to derive many interesting new results and to unify many important old results in topology. In this paper we will develope along this line. We hope that the other features of loop group representations, such as fusion rules and tensor category structure may also be applied to topology. See the discussions in §3. The contents of this paper is organized in the following way. In §1 we introduce elliptic genus by combining index theory and the representation theory of loop groups. The relation of the classical index theory with representation theory of classical Lie groups was discussed in [A1]. Here one finds that just replacing the classical Lie groups by their corresponding loop groups, we get the complete theory of elliptic genus, or more generally the index theory on loop space. Especially the Dirac operator and the Witten genus of loop space are derived more convincingly in this way. Then all of the other well-known properties of elliptic genus, such as functional equations, characterizations by rigidity and fibrations, can be easily obtained. Here we only pick some less well-known results to discuss, for example the expressions of the parameters in elliptic genera in terms of theta-functions. Different from the classical Lie group case, a new feature in our situation appears, the modular invariance which, by combining with index theory, is applied to obtain many new topological results. This is the content of §2. Most results in this section are special cases of more general results. For simplicity we only give the main ideas of the proofs. We make some geometric constructions in §3 to understand elliptic cohomology. The construction in §3.3 is motivated by the vertex operator algebra construction of the monstrous moonshine module. Abstract:In this paper, we develop a method to verify David's integrability condition for certain Beltrami differentials without using Petersen puzzles. Using this method and trans-quasiconformal surgery, we prove that for any David type rotation number, the boundary of the Siegel disk of $f_{\theta}(z) = e^{2 \pi i \theta} \sin (z)$ is a Jordan curve which passes through exactly two critical points $\pi/2$ and $-\pi/2$.

Abstract:We give a new proof of Cartan's fixed point theorem using topological fixed point theory. For an odd dimensional, simply connected and complete manifold having non-positive curvature, we further prove that every isometry with finite order not only fixes a point, but also maps a pencil of geodesics to itself. We apply similar techniques to the automorphism group of a smoothly bounded domain in the complex plane having connectivity three or more. We show that any prime dividing the order of this finite group must divide a certain integer depending only on the connectivity of the domain.

Abstract:We extend our family rigidity and vanishing theorems in [LiuMaZ] to the Spin c case.In particular, we prove a ^-theory version of the main results of [H], [Liul, Theorem B] for a family of almost complex manifolds.0. Introduction.Let M, B be two compact smooth manifolds, and TT : M -» B be a smooth fibration with compact fibre X.Let TX be the relative tangent bundle.Assume that a compact Lie group G acts fiberwise on M, that is, the action preserves each fiber of TT.Let P be a family of G-equivariant elliptic operators along the fiber X.Then the family index of P, Ind(P), is a well-defined element in K(B) (cf.[AS]) and is a virtual G-representation (cf.[LiuMal]).We denote by (Ind(P)) G £ K(B) the G-invariant part of Ind(P).A family of elliptic operator P is said to be rigid on the equivariant Chern character level with respect to this G-action, if the equivariant Chern character ch 5 (Ind(P)) G H*(B) is independent of g G G. Abstract:We prove that in the moduli space Md of degree d2 rational maps, any hyperbolic component in the disconnectedness locus and of Cantor circle type is a finite quotient of R4d-4-nxTn, where n is determined by dynamics. The proof uses some ideas from Riemann surface theory (Abel's Theorem), dynamical system and algebraic topology.

Abstract:We prove a vanishing theorem for the fundamental group of a compact submanifold in a space form, and then present a refined version of Ejiri's rigidity theorem for minimal submanifolds in a sphere. Inspired by the refined Ejiri theorem, we verify a new differentiable sphere theorem for compact submanifolds in space forms. We also show that our differentiable sphere theorem is sharp. We emphasize that our method of Ricci flow in the proof of the sphere theorem seems useful in the study of curvature and topology. Also, we obtain a differentiable pinching theorem for compact submanifolds in a Riemannian manifold.

Abstract:In this note we show that the regular part of the natural extension (in the sense of Lyubich and Minsky) of quadratic map $f(z) = e^{2 \pi i \theta}z + z^2$ with irrational $\theta$ of bounded type has only parabolic leaves except the invariant lift of the Siegel disk. We also show that though the natural extension of a rational function with a Cremer fixed point has a continuum of irregular points, it can not supply enough singularity to apply the Gross star theorem to find hyperbolic leaves.

Abstract:In this paper we shall give an analytic proof of the fact that the Liouville energy on a topological two sphere is bounded from below. Our proof does not rely on the uniformization theorem and the Onofri inequality, thus it is essentially needed in the alternative proof of the uniformization theorem via the Calabi flow. Such an analytic approach also sheds light on how to obtain the boundedness for E 1 energy in the study of general Kähler manifolds.

Abstract:We introduce a differential topological proof and an analytical proof of Riemann hypothesis according to the saddle point method because Riemann calculated the integral representation of zeta function on the critical line by this method. This topological proof of RH proves that the existence of integral representation of zeta functions requires certain differential topological conditions on its integrand according to which the zeta function vanishes on the critical line. The analytical proof of RH is the local implementation of topological proof or its coordinate representation.

Abstract:A gap in the proof prevents us to show that surfaces with constant mean curvature closed to 1/2 in H2 X R and having boundary with curvature greater than one, contained in a horizontal section P of H2 X R are topological disks, provided they are contained in one of the two halfspaces determined by P. This is the analogue in H2 X R of a result in R3 by A. Ros and H. Rosenberg [13, Theorem 2].

Abstract:We prove a conjecture of Toponogov on complete convex planes, namely that such planes must contain an umbilic point, albeit at infinity. Our proof is indirect. It uses Fredholm regularity of an associated Riemann-Hilbert boundary value problem and an existence result for holomorphic discs with Lagrangian boundary conditions, both of which apply to a putative counterexample. Corollaries of the main theorem include a Hawking-Penrose singularity-type theorem, as well as the proof of a conjecture of Milnor's from 1965 in the convex case.
