Abstract:In this paper, we study the existence of various harmonic maps from Hermitian manifolds to Kaehler, Hermitian and Riemannian manifolds respectively. By using refined Bochner formulas on Hermitian (possibly non-Kaehler) manifolds, we derive new rigidity results on Hermitian harmonic maps from compact Hermitian manifolds to Riemannian manifolds, and we also obtain the complex analyticity of pluri-harmonic maps from compact complex manifolds to compact Kaehler manifolds (and Riemannian manifolds) with non-degenerate curvatures, which are analogous to several fundamental results in [28,Siu], [14,Jost-Yau] and [26, Sampson].

Abstract:By using a result of Dominguez and Sienra on the topological rigidity of the Sine family, we give a different proof of a result in [8] which says that, for any bounded type irrational number 0 <theta < 1, the boundary of the Siegel disk of e(2 pi i theta) sin(z) is a quasi-circle passing through exactly two critical points pi/2 and -pi/2.

Abstract:The relationship between harmonic maps from R2 to S2, H2, ST,1, S1,1(-1) and the ± sinh — Laplace, ± sine — Laplace equation is found respectively. Existence theorems of some boundary value problems for the above harmonic maps are obtained. In the cases of H2, S1,1(+1), S1,1(-1) the results are global.

Abstract:We prove that in the moduli space Md of degree d2 rational maps, any hyperbolic component in the disconnectedness locus and of Cantor circle type is a finite quotient of R4d-4-nxTn, where n is determined by dynamics. The proof uses some ideas from Riemann surface theory (Abel's Theorem), dynamical system and algebraic topology.

Abstract:In this paper we consider families of holomorphic maps defined on subsets of the complex plane, and show that the technique developed in [24] to treat unfolding of critical relations can also be used to deal with cases where the critical orbit converges to a hyperbolic attracting or a parabolic periodic orbit. As before this result applies to rather general families of maps, such as polynomial-like mappings, provided some lifting property holds. Our Main Theorem states that either the multiplier of a hyperbolic attracting periodic orbit depends univalently on the parameter and bifurcations at parabolic periodic points are generic, or one has persistency of periodic orbits with a fixed multiplier.

Abstract:In this paper it is shown that for a transcendental entire map with certain properties on the distribution of either its zeros, or points in its periodic and preperiodic Fatou domains, all of its Fatou components are simply connected, the union of its Julia set and is connected and the Julia set is uniformly perfect. Moreover, it is shown that any transcendental entire map that interpolates the 3n+1 problem has only simply connected Fatou components and its Julia set is uniformly perfect.

Abstract:It is known that there is no nonconstant bounded harmonic map from the Euclidean space R-n to the hyperbolic space H-m. This is a particular case of a result of S.-Y. Cheng. However, there are many polynomial growth harmonic maps from R-2 to H-2 by the results of Z. Han, L.- F. Tam, A. Treibergs and T. an. One of the purposes of this paper is to construct harmonic maps from R-n to H-m by prescribing boundary data at infinity. The boundary data is assumed to satisfy some symmetric properties. On the other hand, it was proved by Han-Tam-Treibergs-Wan that under some reasonable assumptions, the image of a harmonic diffeomorphism from R-2 into H-2 is an ideal polygon with n+2 vertices on the geometric boundary of H-2 if and only if its Hopf differential is of the form phi dz(2) where phi is a polynomial of degree n. It is unclear whether one can nd explicit relation between the coefficients of and the vertices of the image of the harmonic map. The second purpose of this paper is to investigate this problem. We will explicitly demonstrate some families of polynomial holomorphic quadratic differentials, such that the harmonic maps from R-2 into H-2 with Hopf differentials in the same family will have the same image. In proving this, we first study the asymptotic behaviors of harmonic maps from R-2 into H-2 with polynomial Hopf differentials phi dz(2). The result may have independent interest.

Abstract:We introduce the notion of topological hyperbolicity to characterize the largeness of the topological fundamental group of a complex variety. Inspired by the Shafarevich conjecture, we propose to study the topological hyperbolicity of moduli spaces of polarized manifolds. We provide two pieces of supporting evidence: first, we show that moduli spaces where the infinitesimal Torelli theorem holds are very close to being topologically hyperbolic. Second, we establish a weak form of topological hyperbolicity for moduli spaces of elliptic surfaces of Kodaira dimension one without multiple fibers, where the infinitesimal Torelli theorem generally does not hold.

Abstract:Among other things, we prove the following two topological statements about closed hyperbolic 3-manifolds. First, every rational second homology class of a closed hyperbolic 3-manifold has a positive integral multiple represented by an oriented connected closed pi(1)-injectively immersed quasi-Fuchsian subsurface. Second, every rationally null-homologous, pi(1)-injectively immersed oriented closed 1-submanifold in a closed hyperbolic 3-manifold has an equidegree finite cover which bounds an oriented connected compact pi(1)-injectively immersed quasi-Fuchsian subsurface. In, we exploit techniques developed by Kahn and Markovic but we only distill geometric and topological ingredients from those papers, so no hard analysis is involved in this article.

Abstract:We extend the vanishing and sphere theorems due to Lawson, Simons, Xin, Shiohama and Xu. By using the techniques of calculus of variations in the geometric measure theory, we prove the vanishing theorem for homology groups of submanifolds in the hyperbolic space H-n(c) with negative constant curvature c. Moreover, we obtain a topological sphere theorem for certain complete submanifolds in H-n(c).

Abstract:The symmetry breaking bifurcation of a sine map is discussed when the control parameter in the sine map is chosen as a bifurcation parameter. Based on the sine map, the bifurcation points can be derived by the iterative map. Then, the stability of the system is enhanced by employing a cubic and a linear chaotic controller to exactly control the locations of the bifurcation points. Moreover, the universal constants of the chaotic system have been obtained by numerical simulation. The validity of the theoretical analysis is proved by the diagrams of bifurcation and Lyapunov exponent.

Abstract:Singular hyperbolicity is a fundamental notion in dynamical systems that describes in particular Lorenz-like dynamics. It is defined using the tangent flow and concerns both the regular and singular parts of the dynamics. In this paper, we give a characterization of singular hyperbolicity using the linear Poincaré flow, which by definition is defined on the regular part (usually non-compact) of the dynamics only.

Abstract:Given a topological cell decomposition of a closed surface equipped with edge weights, we consider the Dirichlet energy of any geodesic realization of the 1-skeleton graph to a hyperbolic surface. By minimizing the energy over all possible hyperbolic structures and over all realizations within a fixed homotopy class, one obtains a discrete harmonic map into an optimal hyperbolic surface. We characterize the extremum by showing that at the optimal hyperbolic structure, the discrete harmonic map and the edge weights are induced from a weighted Delaunay decomposition.

Abstract:In this paper, we discuss the associated family of harmonic maps $\mathcal{F}: M \rightarrow G/K$ from a Riemann surface $M$ into inner symmetric spaces of compact or non-compact type which are either algebraic or totally symmetric. These notions are the two components of the definition of a harmonic map of finite uniton number, as stated by [2]. We finish this paper by comparing these to notions and by stating a conjecture.
