Abstract:In this paper, we give a family of rational maps whose Julia sets are Cantor circles and show that every rational map whose Julia set is a Cantor set of circles must be topologically conjugate to one map in this family on their corresponding Julia sets. In particular, we give the specific expressions of some rational maps whose Julia sets are Cantor circles, but they are not topologically conjugate to any McMullen maps on their Julia sets. Moreover, some non-hyperbolic rational maps whose Julia sets are Cantor circles are also constructed.

Abstract:For the family of quadratic rational functions having a 2-cycle of bounded type Siegel disks, we prove that each of the boundaries of these Siegel disks contains at most one critical point. Abstract:Let $\alpha$ be an irrational number of sufficiently high type and suppose $P_\alpha(z)=e^{2\pi i\alpha}z+z^2$ has a Siegel disk $\Delta_\alpha$ centered at the origin. We prove that the boundary of $\Delta_\alpha$ is a Jordan curve, and that it contains the critical point $-e^{2\pi i\alpha}/2$ if and only if $\alpha$ is a Herman number.

Abstract:In this paper, we develop a method to verify David's integrability condition for certain Beltrami differentials without using Petersen puzzles. Using this method and trans-quasiconformal surgery, we prove that for any David type rotation number, the boundary of the Siegel disk of $f_{\theta}(z) = e^{2 \pi i \theta} \sin (z)$ is a Jordan curve which passes through exactly two critical points $\pi/2$ and $-\pi/2$.

Abstract:We extend Thurston's combinatorial criterion for postcritically finite rational maps to a class of rational maps with bounded type Siegel disks. The combinatorial characterization of this class of Siegel rational maps plays a special role in the study of general Siegel rational maps. Abstract:In this paper we explore a class of quadratic polynomials having Siegel disks with unbounded type rotation numbers. We prove that any boundary point of Siegel disks of these polynomials is a Lebesgue density point of their filled-in Julia sets, which generalizes the corresponding result of McMullen for bounded type rotation numbers. As an application, this result can help us construct more quadratic Julia sets with positive area. Moreover, we also explore the canonical candidate model for quasiconformal surgery of quadratic polynomials with Siegel disks. We prove that for any irrational rotation number, any boundary point of ``Siegel disk'' of the canonical candidate model is a Lebesgue density point of its ``filled-in Julia set'', in particular the critical point $1$ is a measurable deep point of the ``filled-in Julia set''.

Abstract:Hyperbolic geometry plays an important role within function theory of the disk. For example, via the Schwarz-Pick Lemma, the isometries of the unit disk $\mathbb D$ with respect to this geometry are the conformal self-maps of $\mathbb D$. In this elementary classroom note, we are interested in the collection of the pseudohyperbolic disks $D_\rho(x,r)$ (with fixed radius $r$ and variable hyperbolic centers $-1<x<1$) and determine explicitely with function theoretic tools the enveloppe of these disks.

This leads us to extend Petersen's local connectivity result on the Julia sets of quadratic Siegel polynomials to a general case. A new key feature in the proof is that the puzzles are not used.

Abstract:In this note we show that the regular part of the natural extension (in the sense of Lyubich and Minsky) of quadratic map $f(z) = e^{2 \pi i \theta}z + z^2$ with irrational $\theta$ of bounded type has only parabolic leaves except the invariant lift of the Siegel disk. We also show that though the natural extension of a rational function with a Cremer fixed point has a continuum of irregular points, it can not supply enough singularity to apply the Gross star theorem to find hyperbolic leaves.

Abstract:We study locally flat disks in $(\mathbb{C} P^2)^\circ:=(\mathbb{C} P^2)\setminus \mathring{B^4}$ with boundary a fixed knot $K$ and whose complement has fundamental group $\mathbb{Z}$. We show that up to topological isotopy rel. boundary, such disks necessarily arise by performing a positive crossing change on $K$ to an Alexander polynomial one knot and capping off with a $\mathbb{Z}$-disk in $D^4.$ Such a crossing change determines a loop in $S^3 \setminus K$ and we prove that the homology class of its lift to the infinite cyclic cover leads to a complete invariant of the disk. We prove that this determines a bijection between the set of rel. boundary topological isotopy classes of $\mathbb{Z}$-disks with boundary $K$ and a quotient of the set of unitary units of the ring $\mathbb{Z}[t^{\pm 1}]/(\Delta_K)$. Number-theoretic considerations allow us to deduce that a knot $K \subset S^3$ with quadratic Alexander polynomial bounds $0,1,2,4$, or infinitely many $\mathbb{Z}$-disks in $(\mathbb{C} P^2)^\circ$. This leads to the first examples of knots bounding infinitely many topologically distinct disks whose exteriors have the same fundamental group and equivariant intersection form. Finally we give several examples where these disks are realized smoothly.
