Abstract:In this paper, we discuss the rational maps F_λ (z) = z^n + λ /z^n ,n ⩾ 2 with the positive real parameter λ . It is shown that the immediately attracting basin B λ of ∞ for F λ is always a Jordan domain if the Julia set of F λ is not a Cantor set. Furthermore, B λ is a quasidisk if there is no parabolic fixed point on the boundary of B λ . It is also shown that if the Julia set of F λ is connected, then it is locally connected and all Fatou components are Jordan domains. Finally, a complete description to the problem when the Julia set is a Sierpiński curve is given.

Abstract:By means of a nested sequence of some critical pieces constructed by Kozlovski, Shen, and van Strien, and by using a covering lemma recently proved by Kahn and Lyubich, we prove that a component of the filled-in Julia set of any polynomial is a point if and only if its forward orbit contains no periodic critical components. It follows immediately that the Julia set of a polynomial is a Cantor set if and only if each critical component of the filled-in Julia set is aperiodic. This result was a conjecture raised by Branner and Hubbard in 1992.

Abstract:The possibilities for limit functions on a Fatou component for the iteration of a single polynomial or rational function are well understood and quite restricted. In non-autonomous iteration, where one considers compositions of arbitrary polynomials with suitably bounded degrees and coefficients, one should observe a far greater range of behavior. We show this is indeed the case and we exhibit a bounded sequence of quadratic polynomials which has a bounded Fatou component on which one obtains as limit functions every member of the classical Schlicht family of normalized univalent functions on the unit disc. The proof is based on quasiconformal surgery and the use of high iterates of a quadratic polynomial with a Siegel disc which closely approximate the identity on compact subsets. Careful bookkeeping using the hyperbolic metric is required to control the errors in approximating the desired limit functions and ensure that these errors ultimately tend to zero.

Abstract:We consider families of polynomial lemniscates in the complex plane and determine if they bound a Jordan domain. This allows us to find examples of regions for which we can calculate the projection of $\bar{z}$ to the Bergman space of the bounded region. Such knowledge has applications to the calculation of torsional rigidity.

Abstract:In complex dynamics, the boundaries of higher dimensional hyperbolic components in holomorphic families of polynomials or rational maps are mysterious objects, whose topological and analytic properties are fundamental problems. In this paper, we show that in some typical families of polynomials (i.e. algebraic varieties defined by periodic critical relations), the boundary of a capture hyperbolic component ℋ is homeomorphic to the sphere S^2_ℂ(ℋ)-1. Furthermore, we establish an unexpected identity for the Hausdorff dimension of ∂ℋ: H.dim(∂ℋ) = 2 _ℂ(ℋ)-2+max_f∈∂ℋH.dim(∂ A^J(f)), where A^J(f) is the union of the bounded attracting Fatou components of f associated with the free critical points in the Julia set J(f). In the proof, some new results with independent interests are discovered.

Abstract:Let $\alpha$ be an irrational number of sufficiently high type and suppose $P_\alpha(z)=e^{2\pi i\alpha}z+z^2$ has a Siegel disk $\Delta_\alpha$ centered at the origin. We prove that the boundary of $\Delta_\alpha$ is a Jordan curve, and that it contains the critical point $-e^{2\pi i\alpha}/2$ if and only if $\alpha$ is a Herman number.

Abstract: Wandering Fatou components were recently constructed by Astorg et al for higher dimensional holomorphic maps on projective spaces. Their examples are polynomial skew products with a parabolic invariant line. In this paper we study this wandering domain problem for polynomial skew product $f$ with an attracting invariant line $L$ (which is the more common case). We show that if $f$ is unicritical (in the sense that the critical curve has a unique transversal intersection with $L$), then every Fatou component of $f$ in the basin of $L$ is an extension of a one-dimensional Fatou component of $f|_L$. As a corollary there is no wandering Fatou component. We will also discuss the multicritical case under additional assumptions.

Abstract:Let f:C↦Cˆ be a transcendental meromorphic function with at most finitely many poles. We mainly investigated the existence of the Baker wandering domains of f(z) and proved, among others, that if f(z) has a Baker wandering domain U, then for all sufficiently large n, fn(U) contains a round annulus whose module tends to infinity as n→∞ and so for some 0<d<1,Mc(r,a,f)d⩽mc(r,a,f),r∈G, where G is a set of positive numbers with infinite logarithmic measure. Therefore, we give out several criterion conditions for non-existence of the Baker wandering domains.

Abstract:A theorem of Harald Bohr (1914) states that if f is a holomorphic map from the unit disc into itself, then the sum of absolute values of its Taylor expansion is less than 1 for |z|<1/3. The bound 1/3 is optimal. This result has been extended in a suitable sense by Liu Taishun and Wang Jianfei (2007) to the bounded complex symmetric domains of the four classical series, and to polydiscs. The result of Liu and Wang may be generalized to all bounded symmetric domains, with a proof which does not depend on classification.

Abstract:Little is known about the existence of wandering Fatou components for rational maps in two complex variables. In 2003 Lilov proved the non-existence of wandering Fatou components for polynomial skew-products in the neighborhood of an invariant super-attracting fiber. In fact Lilov proved a stronger result, namely that the forward orbit of any vertical disk must intersect a fattened Fatou component of the invariant fiber. Naturally the next class of maps to study are polynomial skew-products with an invariant attracting (but not super-attracting) fiber. Here we show that Lilov's stronger result does not hold in this setting: for some skew-products there are vertical disks whose orbits accumulate at repelling fixed points in the invariant fiber, and that therefore never intersect the fattened Fatou components. These disks are necessarily Fatou disks, but we also prove that the vertical disks we construct lie entirely in the Julia set. Our results therefore do not answer the existence question of wandering Fatou components in the attracting setting, but show that the question is considerably more complicated than in the super-attracting setting.
