Abstract:Let $box(G)$ be the boxicity of a graph $G$, $G[H_1,H_2,\ldots, H_n]$ be the $G$-generalized join graph of $n$-pairwise disjoint graphs $H_1,H_2,\ldots, H_n$, $G^d_k$ be a circular clique graph (where $k\geq 2d$) and $\Gamma(R)$ be the zero-divisor graph of a commutative ring $R$. In this paper, we prove that $\chi(G^d_k)\geq box(G^d_k)$, for all $k$ and $d$ with $k\geq 2d$. This generalizes the results proved in \cite{Aki}. Also we obtain that $box(G[H_1,H_2,\ldots,H_n])\leq \mathop\sum\limits_{i=1}^nbox(H_i)$. As a consequence of this result, we obtain a bound for boxicity of zero-divisor graph of a finite commutative ring with unity. In particular, if $R$ is a finite commutative non-zero reduced ring with unity, then $\chi(\Gamma(R))\leq box(\Gamma(R))\leq 2^{\chi(\Gamma(R))}-2$. where $\chi(\Gamma(R))$ is the chromatic number of $\Gamma(R)$. Moreover, we show that if $N= \prod\limits_{i=1}^{a}p_i^{2n_i} \prod\limits_{j=1}^{b}q_j^{2m_j+1}$ is a composite number, where $p_i$'s and $q_j$'s are distinct prime numbers, then $box(\Gamma(\mathbb{Z}_N))\leq \big(\mathop\prod\limits_{i=1}^{a}(2n_i+1)\mathop\prod\limits_{j=1}^{b}(2m_j+2)\big)-\big(\mathop\prod\limits_{i=1}^{a}(n_i+1)\mathop\prod\limits_{j=1}^{b}(m_j+1)\big)-1$, where $\mathbb{Z}_N$ is the ring of integers modulo $N$. Further, we prove that, $box(\Gamma(\mathbb{Z}_N))=1$ if and only if either $N=p^n$ for some prime number $p$ and some positive integer $n\geq 2$ or $N=2p$ for some odd prime number $p$.

Abstract:We prove a conjecture of Bonamy, Bousquet, Pilipczuk, Rzążewski, Thomassé, and Walczak, that for every graph $H$, there is a polynomial $p$ such that for every positive integer $s$, every graph of average degree at least $p(s)$ contains either $K_{s,s}$ as a subgraph or contains an induced subdivision of $H$. This improves upon a result of Kühn and Osthus from 2004 who proved it for graphs whose average degree is at least triply exponential in $s$ and a recent result of Du, Girão, Hunter, McCarty and Scott for graphs with average degree at least singly exponential in $s$. As an application, we prove that the class of graphs that do not contain an induced subdivision of $K_{s,t}$ is polynomially $\chi$-bounded. In the case of $K_{2,3}$, this is the class of theta-free graphs, and answers a question of Davies. Along the way, we also answer a recent question of McCarty, by showing that if $\mathcal{G}$ is a hereditary class of graphs for which there is a polynomial $p$ such that every bipartite $K_{s,s}$-free graph in $\mathcal{G}$ has average degree at most $p(s)$, then more generally, there is a polynomial $p'$ such that every $K_{s,s}$-free graph in $\mathcal{G}$ has average degree at most $p'(s)$. Our main new tool is an induced variant of the Kővári-Sós-Turán theorem, which we find to be of independent interest.

Abstract:A class $\mathcal F$ of graphs is $\chi$-bounded if there is a function $f$ such that $\chi(H)\le f(\omega(H))$ for all induced subgraphs $H$ of a graph in $\mathcal F$. If $f$ can be chosen to be a polynomial, we say that $\mathcal F$ is polynomially $\chi$-bounded. Esperet proposed a conjecture that every $\chi$-bounded class of graphs is polynomially $\chi$-bounded. This conjecture has been disproved; it has been shown that there are classes of graphs that are $\chi$-bounded but not polynomially $\chi$-bounded. Nevertheless, inspired by Esperet's conjecture, we introduce Pollyanna classes of graphs. A class $\mathcal C$ of graphs is Pollyanna if $\mathcal C\cap \mathcal F$ is polynomially $\chi$-bounded for every $\chi$-bounded class $\mathcal F$ of graphs. We prove that several classes of graphs are Pollyanna and also present some proper classes of graphs that are not Pollyanna.

Parameterized and Approximation Algorithms for Boxicity

Abstract:Boxicity of a graph $G(V,$ $E)$, denoted by $box(G)$, is the minimum integer $k$ such that $G$ can be represented as the intersection graph of axis parallel boxes in $\mathbb{R}^k$. The problem of computing boxicity is inapproximable even for graph classes like bipartite, co-bipartite and split graphs within $O(n^{1 - \epsilon})$-factor, for any $\epsilon >0$ in polynomial time unless $NP=ZPP$. We give FPT approximation algorithms for computing the boxicity of graphs, where the parameter used is the vertex or edge edit distance of the given graph from families of graphs of bounded boxicity. This can be seen as a generalization of the parameterizations discussed in \cite{Adiga2}. Extending the same idea in one of our algorithms, we also get an $O\left(\frac{n\sqrt{\log \log n}}{\sqrt{\log n}}\right)$ factor approximation algorithm for computing boxicity and an $O\left(\frac{n {(\log \log n)}^{\frac{3}{2}}}{\sqrt{\log n}}\right)$ factor approximation algorithm for computing the cubicity. These seem to be the first $o(n)$ factor approximation algorithms known for both boxicity and cubicity. As a consequence of this result, a $o(n)$ factor approximation algorithm for computing the partial order dimension of finite posets and a $o(n)$ factor approximation algorithm for computing the threshold dimension of split graphs would follow.

For t = 1 and general d this is a classical theorem of Gyárfás, and for d = 2 and general t this is a theorem of Bonamy et al.

Abstract:We study three combinatorial models for the lower-triangular matrix with entries $t_{n,k} = \binom{n}{k} n^{n-k}$: two involving rooted trees on the vertex set $[n+1]$, and one involving partial functional digraphs on the vertex set $[n]$. We show that this matrix is totally positive and that the sequence of its row-generating polynomials is coefficientwise Hankel-totally positive. We then generalize to polynomials $t_{n,k}(y,z)$ that count improper and proper edges, and further to polynomials $t_{n,k}(y,\mathbf{\phi})$ in infinitely many indeterminates that give a weight $y$ to each improper edge and a weight $m! \, \phi_m$ for each vertex with $m$ proper children. We show that if the weight sequence $\mathbf{\phi}$ is Toeplitz-totally positive, then the two foregoing total-positivity results continue to hold. Our proofs use production matrices and exponential Riordan arrays.

Sublinear Approximation Algorithms for Boxicity and Related Problems

Abstract:Boxicity of a graph G(V, E) is the minimum integer k such that G can be represented as the intersection graph of axis parallel boxes in $\mathbb{R}^k$. Cubicity is a variant of boxicity, where the axis parallel boxes in the intersection representation are restricted to be of unit length sides. Deciding whether boxicity (resp. cubicity) of a graph is at most k is NP-hard, even for k=2 or 3. Computing these parameters is inapproximable within $O(n^{1 - \epsilon})$-factor, for any $\epsilon >0$ in polynomial time unless NP=ZPP, even for many simple graph classes. In this paper, we give a polynomial time $\kappa(n)$ factor approximation algorithm for computing boxicity and a $\kappa(n)\lceil \log \log n\rceil$ factor approximation algorithm for computing the cubicity, where $\kappa(n) =2\left\lceil\frac{n\sqrt{\log \log n}}{\sqrt{\log n}}\right\rceil$. These o(n) factor approximation algorithms also produce the corresponding box (resp. cube) representations. As a special case, this resolves the question paused by Spinrad about polynomial time construction of o(n) dimensional box representations for boxicity 2 graphs. Other consequences of our approximation algorithm include $O(\kappa(n))$ factor approximation algorithms for computing the following parameters: the partial order dimension of finite posets, the interval dimension of finite posets, minimum chain cover of bipartite graphs, threshold dimension of split graphs and Ferrer's dimension of digraphs. Each of these parameters is inapproximable within an $O(n^{1 - \epsilon})$-factor, for any $\epsilon >0$ in polynomial time unless NP=ZPP and the algorithms we derive seem to be the first o(n) factor approximation algorithms known for all these problems.

Abstract:A $k$-dimensional box is the Cartesian product $R_1 \times R_2 \times ... \times R_k$ where each $R_i$ is a closed interval on the real line. The {\it boxicity} of a graph $G$, denoted as $\boxi(G)$, is the minimum integer $k$ such that $G$ can be represented as the intersection graph of a collection of $k$-dimensional boxes. A unit cube in $k$-dimensional space or a $k$-cube is defined as the Cartesian product $R_1 \times R_2 \times ... \times R_k$ where each $R_i$ is a closed interval on the real line of the form $[a_i,a_i + 1]$. The {\it cubicity} of $G$, denoted as $\cub(G)$, is the minimum integer $k$ such that $G$ can be represented as the intersection graph of a collection of $k$-cubes. The {\it threshold dimension} of a graph $G(V,E)$ is the smallest integer $k$ such that $E$ can be covered by $k$ threshold spanning subgraphs of $G$. In this paper we will show that there exists no polynomial-time algorithm to approximate the threshold dimension of a graph on $n$ vertices with a factor of $O(n^{0.5-\epsilon})$ for any $\epsilon >0$, unless $NP=ZPP$. From this result we will show that there exists no polynomial-time algorithm to approximate the boxicity and the cubicity of a graph on $n$ vertices with factor $O(n^{0.5-\epsilon})$ for any $ \epsilon >0$, unless $NP=ZPP$. In fact all these hardness results hold even for a highly structured class of graphs namely the split graphs. We will also show that it is NP-complete to determine if a given split graph has boxicity at most 3.

Abstract:The boxicity (respectively cubicity) of a graph G is the least integer k such that G can be represented as an intersection graph of axis-parallel k-dimensional boxes (respectively k-dimensional unit cubes) and is denoted by box(G) (respectively cub(G)). It was shown by Adiga and Chandran (2010) that for any graph G, cub(G)≤box(G)⌈log2α(G)⌉, where α(G) is the maximum size of an independent set in G. In this note we show that cub(G)≤2⌈log2χ(G)⌉box(G)+χ(G)⌈log2α(G)⌉, where χ(G) is the chromatic number of G. This result can provide a much better upper bound than that of Adiga and Chandran for graph classes with bounded chromatic number. For example, for bipartite graphs we obtain cub(G)≤2(box(G)+⌈log2α(G)⌉).Moreover, we show that for every positive integer k, there exist graphs with chromatic number k such that for every ϵ>0, the value given by our upper bound is at most (1+ϵ) times their cubicity. Thus, our upper bound is almost tight.

Coloring graphs with forbidden almost bipartite subgraphs

Abstract:Alon, Krivelevich, and Sudakov conjectured in 1999 that for every finite graph $F$, there exists a quantity $c(F)$ such that $\chi(G) \leqslant (c(F) + o(1)) \Delta / \log\Delta$ whenever $G$ is an $F$-free graph of maximum degree $\Delta$. The largest class of connected graphs $F$ for which this conjecture has been verified so far, by Alon, Krivelevich, and Sudakov themselves, comprises the almost bipartite graphs (i.e., subgraphs of the complete tripartite graph $K_{1,t,t}$ for some $t \in \mathbb{N}$). However, the optimal value for $c(F)$ remains unknown even for such graphs. Bollobás showed, using random regular graphs, that $c(F) \geqslant 1/2$ when $F$ contains a cycle. On the other hand, Davies, Kang, Pirot, and Sereni recently established an upper bound of $c(K_{1,t,t}) \leqslant t$. We improve this to a constant, showing $c(F) \leqslant 4$ for every almost bipartite graph $F$. This surprisingly makes the bound independent of $F$ in all the known cases of the conjecture, leading us to make a new conjecture that $c(F)$ is always bounded above by some constant $c$ independent of $F$. We also establish a more general version of our bound in the setting of DP-coloring (also known as correspondence coloring) and consider some algorithmic consequences of our results.

Abstract:A very nice result of Bárány and Lehel asserts that every finite subset $X$ or $\mathbb R^d$ can be covered by $f(d)$ $X$-boxes (i.e. each box has two antipodal points in $X$). As shown by Gyárfás and Pálvőlgyi this result would follow from the following conjecture : If a tournament admits a partition of its arc set into $k$ quasi orders, then its domination number is bounded in terms of $k$. This question is in turn implied by the Erdős-Sands-Sauer-Woodrow conjecture : If the arcs of a tournament $T$ are colored with $k$ colors, there is a set $X$ of at most $g(k)$ vertices such that for every vertex $v$ of $T$, there is a monochromatic path from $X$ to $v$. We give a short proof of this statement. We moreover show that the general Sands-Sauer-Woodrow conjecture (which as a special case implies the stable marriage theorem) is valid for directed graphs with bounded stability number. This conjecture remains however open.

Abstract:The graph polytopes arising from the vertex weighted graph, which was first introduced and studied by Bóna, Ju, and Yoshida. A conjecture states that for a simple connected graph, the polynomial in the numerator of the Ehrhart series is palindromic. We confirm the conjecture. Furthermore, we introduce the hypergraph polytope. We prove that the simple connected unimodular hypergraph polytopes are integer polytopes. We also prove the polynomial in the numerator of the Ehrhart series of simple connected uniform hypergraph polytopes is palindromic.

Abstract:Two axis-aligned boxes in $\mathbb{R}^d$ are \emph{$k$-neighborly} if their intersection has dimension at least $d-k$ and at most $d-1$. The maximum number of pairwise $k$-neighborly boxes in $\mathbb{R}^d$ is denoted by $n(k,d)$. It is known that $n(k,d)=\Theta(d^k)$, for fixed $1\leqslant k\leqslant d$, but exact formulas are known only in three cases: $k=1$, $k=d-1$, and $k=d$. In particular, the formula $n(1,d)=d+1$ is equivalent to the famous theorem of Graham and Pollak on bipartite partitions of cliques.

Abstract:Let $G$ be a connected graph on $n$ vertices with adjacency matrix $A_G$. Associated to $G$ is a polynomial $d_G(x_1,\dots, x_n)$ of degree $n$ in $n$ variables, obtained as the determinant of the matrix $M_G(x_1,\dots,x_n)$, where $M_G={\rm Diag}(x_1,\dots,x_n)-A_G$. We investigate in this article the set $V_{d_G}(r)$ of non-negative values taken by this polynomial when $x_1, \dots, x_n \geq r \geq 1$. We show that $V_{d_G}(1) = {\mathbb Z}_{\geq 0}$. We show that for a large class of graphs one also has $V_{d_G}(2) = {\mathbb Z}_{\geq 0}$. When $V_{d_G}(2) \neq {\mathbb Z}_{\geq 0}$, we show that for many graphs $V_{d_G}(2) $ is dense in $ {\mathbb Z}_{\geq 0}$. We give numerical evidence that in many cases, the complement of $V_{d_G}(2) $ in $ {\mathbb Z}_{\geq 0}$ might in fact be finite. As a byproduct of our results, we show that every graph can be endowed with an arithmetical structure whose associated group is trivial.

Abstract:Let $G=(V,E)$ be a graph and let $A_G$ be the clique-vertex incidence matrix of $G$. It is well known that $G$ is perfect iff the system $A_{_G}\mathbf x\le \mathbf 1$, $\mathbf x\ge\mathbf0$ is totally dual integral (TDI). In 1982, Cameron and Edmonds proposed to call $G$ box-perfect if the system $A_{_G}\mathbf x\le \mathbf 1$, $\mathbf x\ge\mathbf0$ is box-totally dual integral (box-TDI), and posed the problem of characterizing such graphs. In this paper we prove the Cameron-Edmonds conjecture on box-perfectness of parity graphs, and identify several other classes of box-perfect graphs. We also develop a general and powerful method for establishing box-perfectness.

Abstract:We give two extensions of the recent theorem of the first author that the odd distance graph has unbounded chromatic number. The first is that for any non-constant polynomial $f$ with integer coefficients and positive leading coefficient, every finite colouring of the plane contains a monochromatic pair of distinct points whose distance is equal to $f(n)$ for some integer $n$. The second is that for every finite colouring of the plane, there is a monochromatic pair of points whose distance is a prime number.

Abstract:We prove that every indefinite quadratic form with non-negative integer coefficients is the volume polynomial of a pair of lattice polygons. This solves the discrete version of the Heine-Shephard problem for two bodies in the plane. As an application, we show how to construct a pair of planar tropical curves (or a pair of divisors on a toric surface) with given intersection number and self-intersection numbers.
