Abstract:We consider sequences of compositions of quadratic polynomials $f_{c_n} (z) = z^2 + c_n$. For such sequences one can naturally generalize the definitions of the Julia set and basin of infinity from the autonomous case. In this setting the Julia set depends on a sequence $\omega = (c_0, c_1, ...)$. We study the equilibrium (harmonic) measure on such Julia sets. In particular, we calculate the Hausdorff dimension of the equilibrium measure and study its dependence on the ''scale of randomness''.

Abstract:We prove the existence of Cantor Julia sets with Hausdorff dimension two. In particular, such examples can be found in cubic polynomials. The proof is based on the characterization of the parameter spaces and dynamical planes of cubic polynomials by Branner-Hubbard, and the parabolic bifurcation theory developed by Shishikura in 1990s.

Abstract:A simple geometric construction on the moduli spaces $\mathcal{M}_{0,n}$ of curves of genus $0$ with $n$ ordered marked points is described which gives a common framework for many irrationality proofs for zeta values. This construction yields Apéry's approximations to $\zeta(2)$ and $\zeta(3)$, and for larger $n$, an infinite family of small linear forms in multiple zeta values with an interesting algebraic structure. It also contains a generalisation of the linear forms used by Ball and Rivoal to prove that infinitely many odd zeta values are irrational.

Abstract:We investigate the behavior of itinerary sequence of each point of the Julia set of $z\mapsto z^2 + c$ when the parameter $c$ in the shift locus is allowed to pass through points in the bifurcation locus $\mathcal{P}_2$, which we call ``narrow", first proposed by Dierk Schleicher in \cite{schleicher2017internal}. We first show the combinatoric and geometric properties of narrow characteristic arcs. Also, we show how the itinerary sequence changes in an algorithmic way by using lamination models proposed by Keller in \cite{keller2007invariant}. Finally, we found an equivalence relation on the set of $0$-$1$ sequences so that the changing rule is a shift invariant up to the equivalence relation. This generalizes Atela's works in \cite{atela1992bifurcations}, \cite{atela1993mandelbrot}, which dealt with the special case of the generalized rabbit polynomials.

Elliptic Units Above Fields With Exactly One Complex Place

Abstract:In this work we explore the construction of abelian extensions of fields with exactly one complex place using multivariate analytic functions in the spirit of Hilbert's 12th problem. To this end we study the special values of the multiple elliptic Gamma functions introduced in the early 2000s by Nishizawa following the work of Felder and Varchenko on the elliptic Gamma function of Ruijsenaars. We construct geometric variants of these functions enjoying transformation properties under an action of $\mathrm{SL}_{d}(\mathbb{Z})$ for $d \geq 2$. The evaluation of these functions at points of a degree $d$ field $\mathbb{K}$ with exactly one complex place following the scheme of a recent article by Bergeron, Charollois and García (<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2311.04110" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2311.04110">arXiv:2311.04110</a>) seems to produce algebraic numbers. More precisely, we conjecture that such infinite products yield algebraic units in abelian extensions of $\mathbb{K}$ related to conjectural Stark units and we provide numerical evidence to support this conjecture for cubic, quartic and quintic fields.

Erdős inequality for primitive sets

Abstract:A set of natural numbers $A$ is called primitive if no element of $A$ divides any other. Let $\Omega(n)$ be the number of prime divisors of $n$ counted with multiplicity. Let $f_z(A) = \sum_{a \in A}\frac{z^{\Omega(a)}}{a (\log a)^z}$, where $z \in \mathbb{R}_{> 0}$. Erdős proved in 1935 that $f_1(A) = \sum_{a \in A}\frac{1}{a \log a}$ is uniformly bounded over all choices of primitive sets $A$. We prove the same fact for $f_z(A)$, when $z \in (0, 2)$. Also we discuss the $\lim_{z \to 0} f_z(A)$. Some other results about primitive sets are generalized. In particular we study the asymptotic of $f_z(\mathbb{P}_k)$, where $\mathbb{P}_k = \{ n : \Omega(n) = k \}$. In case of $z = 1$ we find the next term in asymptotic expansion of $f_1(\mathbb{P}_k)$ compared to the recent result of Gorodetsky, Lichtman, Wong.

Intersections of Cantor Sets Derived from Complex Radix Expansions

Abstract:Let $C$ be the attractor of the IFS $\{f_{d}(z) = (-n+i)^{-1}(z+d): d\in D\}$, $D\subset\{0, 1, \ldots, n^{2}\}$ and let $\dim$ denote the box-counting dimension. It is known that for all $\lambda\in[0, 1]$, that the set of complex numbers $\alpha$ for which $\dim(C\cap(C+\alpha)) = \lambda\dim(C)$ is dense in the set of $\alpha$ for which $C \cap (C + \alpha) \neq \emptyset$ when $d \leq n^{2}/2$ for all $d\in D$ and $|\delta - \delta^{'}| > n$ for all $\delta \neq \delta^{'} \in D - D$. We show that this result still holds when we replace $|\delta - \delta^{'}| > n$ with $|\delta - \delta^{'}| > 1$. In fact, for sufficiently large $n$, the result even holds when we remove the assumption $d\leq n^{2}/2$ and replace $|\delta - \delta^{'}| > n$ by $|\delta - \delta^{'}| > 2$. Additionally, we make similar statements where $\dim$ denotes the Hausdorff dimension or packing dimension. Our insights also find application in classifying the self-similarity of $C\cap(C+\alpha)$. Namely we connect the occurrence of self-similarity to the notion of strongly eventually periodic sequences seen for analogous objects on the real line. We also provide a new proof of a result of W. Gilbert that inspired this work.

On the Shapes of Rational Lemniscates

Abstract:A rational lemniscate is a level set of $|r|$ where $r: \hat{\mathbb{C}} \rightarrow \hat{\mathbb{C}}$ is rational. We prove that any planar Euler graph can be approximated, in a strong sense, by a homeomorphic rational lemniscate. This generalizes Hilbert's lemniscate theorem; he proved that any Jordan curve can be approximated (in the same strong sense) by a polynomial lemniscate that is also a Jordan curve. As consequences, we obtain a sharp quantitative version of the classical Runge's theorem on rational approximation, and we give a new result on the approximation of planar continua by Julia sets of rational maps.

Abstract:Conditionally on a conjecture on the étale cohomology of Hilbert modular surfaces and some minor technical assumptions, we establish new instances of the equivariant BSD-conjecture in rank $0$ with applications to the arithmetic of rational elliptic curves over quintic fields. The key ingredients are a refinement of twisted triple product $p$-adic $L$-functions, the construction of a compatible collection of Hirzebruch-Zagier cycles and an explicit reciprocity law relating the two.
