Abstract:The dispersion behavior of alumina powders in silica sol of various concentrations was investigated by sedimentation and rheology measurements. It is found that the slurry shows a great reduction in sedimentation volume percent and apparent viscosity while dispersed in silica sol compared with that in de-ionized water. The sedimentation volume percent and the apparent viscosity decreases with the increase of silica sol concentration and reaches a minimum at a certain concentration, but then increases slowly with the further increase of silica sol concentration. The silica concentration in the supernatant increases compared to the initial concentration. TEM observation and FTIR analysis show that there hardly exist silica nanoparticles in the sediment. Thus the adsorption model is deduced, and it is found that the silica sol concentration, at which the sedimentation volume or the apparent viscosity reaches the minimum, is about 2.5 times of the theoretical value of monolayer scatters. It is therefore proposed that the dispersion and stabilization of alumina particles in silica sol are attributed to the depletion stabilization mechanism.
