Abstract:Oak wood was converted into a porous carbon template (charcoal) by carbonizing at 1 200 ℃ under vacuum. Subsequent reactive infiltration of gaseous silicon at 1 500-1 600 ℃ for 0.5-8 h in static argon atmosphere resulted in the formation of β- SiC ceramic with oak wood microstructure. The phase transformation and structural changes during the conversion of oak charcoal into porous SiC ceramic were investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The experimental results show that with the increase of reaction time the degree of reaction of charcoal is improved. The bending strength significantly increases and there are slight changes in porosity. After reacting at 1 600 ℃ for 8 h , oak charcoal is nearly completely converted into porous SiC ceramic with the cellular morphology of oak charcoal. The bending strength and porosity of SiC ceramic are 42. 1 MPa and 46.4%, respectively. The mechanism of reactive infiltration of gaseous silicon into oak charcoal is briefly introduced.
