Abstract:Core/shell opal gels of sulfonated polystyrene were used as templates to synthesize structured crystalline titania materials. Under acidic conditions, opal materials with hollow spheres of controllable shell thickness and cavity size were prepared. Under neutral conditions, inverse opal inorganic materials with a tunable pore size were prepared. It is crucial that proton ions induce a preferential sol/gel process, forming titania in the gel.

Abstract:An amorphous titania gel layer was formed on the titanium surface after the titanium specimen was treated with a H2O2/0.1m HCl solution at 80°C. The thickness of the gel layer increased almost linearly with the period of the treatment. A subsequent heat treatment above 300°C transformed gradually the amorphous gel to the anatase crystal structure and the rutile started to appear after heat treatment at 600°C. Meanwhile, the densification of the gel occurred significantly after heat treatment above 700°C. Similar to the sol–gel derived titania gel coatings, titania gel layers obtained in the present study exhibited in vitro apatite deposition ability after the gel layers exceeded a minimum thickness (0.2μm) and was subsequently heated in a proper temperature range (400–600°C).

Abstract:Opal hydrogels could be synthesized with polymer inverse opal template. A pH responsive opal N-isopropylacrylamide/acrylic acid copolymerized hydrogel was prepared as an example. The ordered structure and response to pH were investigated. Through the sol-gel process of tetrabutyl titanate, opal titania was obtained with the opal hydrogel template.

Abstract:(Ca-0.61, Nd-0.26)TiO3 nanoparticles were synthesized by sol-gel method. In order to alleviate aggregation, ammonium polyacrylate was employed as dispersant. When the xerogel was heat-treated at 500 degrees C for 1 h with a heating rate 2 degrees C/min, the X-ray diffraction pattern of the powder showed the presence of the orthorhombic GdFeO3 type perovskite phase without any other impurity phase. Moreover, the tetragonal structure particles were obtained with an average size of 50-70 nm. Micro-nanocrystal cores were observed on the substrate of noncrystal at a heating rate of 5 degrees C/min. With the heating rate up to 8 degrees C/min, no conspicuous crystal phase was observed.

Abstract:Highly dense, ordered arrays of a titania (TiO2) nanomaterial with a bowl-shape morphology are generated by using poly(styrene-block-ethylene oxide) (PS-b-PEO) block copolymers as templates combined with a sol-gel process. Porous organic-inorganic hybrid films with titania nanodomains incorporated in the PEO domains can be produced by one step spin-coating. By manipulating the relative composition of the precursor ingredients, a simple protocol to fabricate hexagonally packed arrays of nanobowls is defined. Addition of a second inorganic precursor into the common solution leads to arrays of composite Au-TiO2 nanobowls. Such organic-inorganic hybrids and pure titania nanostructures with controlled shape and size exhibit unique photophysical properties.

Abstract:PLZT inverse opal materials were synthesized by sol-gel process. Synthetic opals from monodisperse sub-micrometer polystyrene spheres were used as template, and sol precursor was infilled in the template. The infilled template was calcined at final temperature of 800℃. By this method, the PLZT inverse opal materials with 280nm periodical structure were prepared from opal template of 400nm polystyrene microspheres in diameter.

Abstract:Titanium dioxide nanotube and nanorod arrays were successfully prepared by the combination of solgel and AAO (anodic aluminum oxide) membrane fabrication. The precursor of titanium dioxide solgel is tetra-isopropyl titanite, and the dipping processing is based on direct dipping or under negative pressure. The products were characterized with FE-SEM, HR-TEM and XRD after heat treatment of samples at 450℃ and removing AAO membranes with NaOH. The results show that the template method is effective in fabricating nanotube arrays, and the products were polycrystalline. The outer diameter of nanotubes is determined by the pore size of template. The pore size and thickness of the membranes used in the experiments were 200 nm and 60 μm respectively.

Abstract:A sandwich-vacuum method was demonstrated for the fabrication of titania (TiO(2)) binary inverse opals with an open surface. In this method, a moisture-stable TiO(2) precursor was backfilled into the interstitial spaces of polystyrene binary colloidal crystals (PS bCCs), which served as a template. Removal of the template by calcination yielded TiO(2) binary inverse opals with a 3D-ordered macroporous (3DOM) structure. Optical reflectance spectra revealed the existence of a pseudostop band gap in the 3DOM TiO(2) samples. The position of the pseudostop band gap shifted to the low-wavelength region as the number ratio of small over large PS spheres was increased in the template. The sandwich-vacuum method proved to be simple and rapid for the fabrication of TiO(2) binary inverse opals without overlayers in large domains. The 3DOM TiO(2) materials were used as a photocatalyst for the degradation of benzoic acid. Results showed that in comparison to TiO(2) nanoparticles prepared under the same sintering conditions, the 3DOM TiO(2) materials displayed enhanced photocatalytic activity.

Abstract:Colloidal crystal template for inverse opal hydrogel is constructed by vertical deposition method using monodispersed silica nanospheres. By adjusting the concentration of monodispersed silica nanospheres, it is found that well-structured silica template with more than 20 layers is formed when the concentration of the silica is 3.5 wt%. To enhance its strength, the prepared template is put in an oven at 500 °C for 2 h. The surface of the template is divided into many blocks by cracks formed in the process of heat treatment. The number of blocks varies with the rising time of the temperature from 25 to 500 °C. Under the same magnification, blocks formed with the rising time of 150 min can be nearly 4 times more than the blocks with a rising time of 300 min or 500 min, which means the slow rising velocity of the temperature can lead to a better colloidal crystal template with fewer blocks.

Abstract:This report presents a facile approach for the low-temperature synthesis of crystalline inorganic-oxide composite hollow spheres by employing the bulk controlled synthesis of inorganic-oxide nanocrystals with polymer spheres as templates. The sulfonated polystyrene gel layer can adsorb the target precursor and induce inorganic nanocrystals to grow on the template in situ. The crystalline phase and morphology of the composite shell is tunable. By simply adjusting the acidity of the titania sol, crystalline titania composite hollow spheres with tunable crystalline phases of anatase, rutile, or a mixture of both were achieved. The approach is general and has been extended to synthesize the representative perovskite oxide (barium and strontium titanate) composite hollow spheres. The traditional thermal treatment for crystallite transformation is not required, thus intact shells can be guaranteed. The combination of oxide properties such as high refractive index, high dielectric constant, and catalytic ability with the cavity of the hollow spheres is promising for applications such as opacifiers, photonic crystals, high-kappa-gate dielectrics, and photocatalysis.

Abstract:Barium titanate (BTO) inverse opal photonic crystals were fabricated by a process of self-assembly of polystyrene opal template in combination with electrophoretic deposition (EPD) of nanoparticles from BTO suspension. In this process, stable monodispersed suspension of BTO nanoparticles was prepared by dispersing BTO gel into a mixed solvent of 2-methoxyethanol and acethylacetone. Then the BTO nanoparticles were infilled into the interstices of the opal template formed by monodisperse polystyrene microspheres by electrophoretic deposition, and then polystyrene template was removed by calcining the specimen at a final temperature of 500oC. SEM images show that the inverse opals possess face-centered cubic (fcc) structure with center to center distant of the air spheres 310 nm. A photonic bandgap in the visible range is observed from reflection spectra of the sample. Such BTO inverse opals as photonic crystals should be useful in device applications.

Abstract:Nanostructure anatase titanium oxide (TiO2) monoliths were prepared using 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate (BMIM+BF4-) room-temperature ionic liquids (RTILs) as template solvents by a simple sol-gel method with a peptization process at ambient temperature. The as-prepared products exhibited wormlike pore structures and large surface areas, which ranged from ca. 118 to ca. 498 m(2) g(-1) by adding various amounts of BMIM'+BF4-. Mesoporous structures of the product with a surface area of ca. 260 m(2) g(-1) were retained upon calcining to 450 degrees C, showing excellent thermal stability. Furthermore, the products revealed higher photocatalytic activities than that of the commercially available TiO2, Degussa P25. Compared with the rutile TiO2 crystal of microporous structure prepared without RTIL, it was thought that BMIM+BF4- acted as a structure-directing agent and enhanced the polycondensation and crystallization rate, resulting in the facile formation of anatase crystal. The nanostructure TiO2 has promising applications in photocatalysis, solar energy conversion, sensor, mesoporous membranes, etc.

Abstract:Inverse opal photonic crystals of lead-free ferroelectric potassium bismuth titanate, K0.5Bi0.5TiO3 (described as KBT) were synthesized by sol–gel technique in combination with self-assembly method. Opal template was self-assembled from suspension of monodisperse polystyrene (PS) microspheres with a mean diameter of 400nm via a vertical deposition process. KBT sol was prepared by mixing bismuth nitrate and potassium carbonate dissolved in acetic acid and ethylene glycol, and tetrabutyl titanate in acetic acid. After infiltrating the KBT sol into the opal template, KBT inverse opal photonic crystals were formed by a series of heat-treatments. X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and optical microscopy (OM) were utilized to characterize the structure and optical properties of the KBT samples, and a photonic bandgap around 500nm was observed by micro-region reflectance spectra.

Abstract:(Pb,La)(Zr,Ti)O-3 (PLZT) inverse opal photonic crystals were synthesized by a sol-gel process with synthetic opal templates of monodisperse submicrometer polystyrene spheres. This process involves infiltration of precursors into the interstices of the opal template, followed by hydrolytic condensation of the precursors and removal of the polystyrene opal combined with crystallization of PLZT perovskite by calcination at a final temperature of 750degreesC. By this method, PLZT inverse opal photonic crystals with a periodical structure of 280 nm center-to-center distance between the air spheres are prepared from opal templates of polystyrene microspheres with a mean diameter of 400 mn. The PLZT inverse opals reflect yellow-green light strongly.

Abstract:Three-dimensionally (3D) ordered macro-/mesoporous (3DOM/m) materials, which combine the advantages of high surface area of the mesopores, efficient mass transport within the macropores, and strong structural stability of the 3D interconnected porous frameworks, have shown remarkable performances in a wide range of applications. Herein, we demonstrate a novel dual-hard-templating technique as a general synthetic strategy for constructing the 3DOM/m materials by nanocasting mesoporous silica confined within the regular voids of a silica colloidal crystal (opal). Through this method, various materials, such as 3DOM/m Pt, Pd, Ni2P, carbon and N/P codoped carbon (NPC), have been successfully synthesized. The as-prepared 3DOM/m Ni2P and NPC are demonstrated to exhibit outstanding electrocatalytic performance for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), respectively.

Abstract:Perovskite structure (Nd-0.55, Li-0.35)TiO3 is traditionally synthesized via phase separation into a superlattice of nanodomains comprising (Nd-0.5, Li-0.5)TiO3 and Nd2/3TiO3 separated by zigzagging boundaries, which possesses a low Q x f value. We successfully synthesized (Nd-0.55, Li-0.35)TiO3 powders with an average grain size of 2 nm by the sol gel method. Using ultrafine (Nd-0.55, Li-0.35)TiO3 powders, A-site-ordered and homogeneous ceramic possessing dramatically improved dielectric properties could be obtained at 1150 degrees C. Abstract:TiO2 thin films with a hexagonal mesoporous structure and an anatase-type crystalline framework are easily synthesized by a sol–gel method at low pH, using an EO–PO–EO block copolymer as template. While the TiO2/polymer superstructure originally has a primitive cubic structure, annealing at 150 °C affords a phase transition to hexagonal (see Figure), which persists upon template removal by calcination.
