Abstract:Mesoporous TiO2 microspheres have been made on a large scale by a simple hydrothermal method without using any surfactants or templates. The products were characterized by XRD, SEM. TEM, SAED, nitrogen adsorption, and UV-vis spectroscopy. Results indicate that the TiO2 microspheres, with a diameter of 0.8-1.2 mu m, are composed of numerous TiO2 nanocrystals with an average diameter of 5.6 nm. The average pore size, BET surface area, and optical band-gap energy of the microspheres are 4.0 nm. 185.6 m(2)/g, and 3.42 eV. respectively.

Abstract:Macroporous TiO2 microspheres have been synthesized on a large scale by a facile hydrothermal process using titanium tetrachloride (TiCl4) as the titanium source, ammonium fluoride (NH4F) and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) as the etchant. X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM), and transmission electron microscope (TEM) studies show that the anatase TiO2 microspheres are well-crystalline with an average diameter of 5.43μm. N2 adsorption–desorption and mercury intrusion porosimetry analysis reveal that the as-prepared TiO2 microspheres are composed of numerous pore networks with an average pore diameter of 274nm and porosity of 39.8%. In addition, the formation mechanisms of macroporous TiO2 microspheres were also investigated.

Abstract:Novel CaTiO3 microspheres composed of nanosheets have been successfully prepared via a very simple solvothermal process in ethanol aqueous solution without any template or surfactant. The microstructure and morphology are characterized by X-ray diffraction, field-emission scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy. The effects of the reaction time, reaction temperature, and molar ratio of ethanol/water on the formation of the spherical structure have been investigated. CaTiO3 microspheres assembled by nanosheet units have been obtained by controlling the molar ratio of water/ethanol. The growth mechanism has been proposed based on the results of time-dependent experiments. It is proposed that amorphous particles transformed to nanosheets, and nanosheets self assembly into solid microspheres, then nanosheets building units further oriented growth along [1 1 0] direction result in the formation of nanosheets building units, and finally form the microsphere composed of nanosheets. CaTiO3 microspheres show higher photocatalytic activity than randomly aggregated nanosheets. In addition, CaTiO3 microspheres are stable during the photocatalytic reaction and more convenient to store and handle as a micrometre-scale structure. (C) 2015 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Three-dimensional (3D) TiO2 nanostructures with various microstructures have been successfully synthesized by altering the solvent via a surfactant-free and single-step solvothermal route. The effects of the solvent on the microstructures of 3D TiO2 nanostructures were investigated. 3D dandelion-like TiO2 structures self-assembled of nanorods were synthesized in non-polar solvent based on water-non-polar solvent interface. For the product derived from the solvent of n-hexane, the 3D microspheres have a homogeneous size distribution in diameter of about 2 mu m and a uniform morphology of radially packed nanorods of 15 nm in diameter along a [001] preference growth direction. A three-step growth model is proposed to illustrate the growth mechanism of TiO2 nanorods self-assembled into 3D dandelion-like structures. Microspheres composed of nanoparticles are obtained using low polar or polar solvent such as n-butyl alcohol and ethanol, which are also amphiphilic solvents. The amphiphile bilayer capped outside the particle serves as the microreactor and soft temple for crystal growth. Only bulky aggregated TiO2 nanoparticles were obtained when pure water is used as the solvent due to the fast hydrolysis of titanium precursor. Mechanisms of the self-assembly of 3D TiO2 structures in different solvents were proposed.

Abstract:Template-free synthesis of TiO 2 architectures with controlled morphology evolution has been developed through solvothermal reaction in 1,4-dioxane. By simply varying the molar ratio of the concentrated HCl over Titanium isopropoxide (TTIP) from 0 to 5.0, series of morphologies including nanoparticle-built microspheres, nanoparticle-built microspheres decorated with nanorods, nanorod cauliflowers, and nanorod dendrites have been obtained. The influence of several key factors on the morphology control of TiO 2 has been systematically investigated. These parameters include the mass (molar) ratio of HCl/TTIP, solvothermal reaction temperature and time, acid species (concentrated nitric acid), and solvent type (tetrahydrofuran and 1,3-dioxane). The mechanism for the formation of the TiO 2 architectures with controlled morphology evolution has been discussed. The application of the TiO 2 architectures as water splitting photocatalyst and lithium–ion battery anode has been demonstrated. And the corresponding structure–property correlation has been discussed.

Abstract:Poly (acrylamide-co-acrylic acid) and polyethylene glycol/polyacrylic acid as templates and acrylic acid as an inhibitor were used to prepare TiO2 nanoparticles. Hydrogel with low speed of absorption and network structure suppressed the speed of hydrolysis of tetrabutyl titanate and growth rate of TiO2 nanoparticles. The as-prepared titanium dioxide nanoparticles have anatase phase structure with a narrow size distribution. As compared with poly (acrylamide-co-acrylic acid), polyethylene glycol/polyacrylic acid has lower expansion rate of water-absorption and higher stability of precursor solution. Using microfluidic process, precursor solution of polyethylene glycol/polyacrylic acid is chosen to prepare TiO2 microspheres. These as-prepared TiO2 microspheres have a uniform size distrubition and good sphericity, which crystal structure is anatase phase after calcination.
Facile Template-Free Route to Synthesis Visible Light Respensive Hollow TiO2 Spheres

Abstract:The monodisperse hollow TiO2 spheres (HTS) were fabricated by facile template-free route involving direct precipitation and etching reaction. Tetrabutyl titanate was used as titanium precursor to form amorphous TiO2 spheres (ATS) directly in ethanol-acetonitrile mixed solution. Then, the ATS were etched by F- with the protection of PVP to form HTS under hydrothermal reaction conditions. The physical and chemical characterizations of synthesized samples were conducted by SEM, TEM, XRD and UV-vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy. Result showed that morphology and structure of HTS can be easily controlled by adjusting time of etching reaction. The HTS obtained by etching for 4 h exhibited good hollow structure with unique shell assembled with enriched nanothorns, and it possessed good photocatalytic activity under visible light irradiation. Abstract:Synthesis of N-doped TiO2 hollow spheres with a small grain size, large surface area and high degree of crystallinity is favorable to achieve an overall high photocatalytic activity. But traditional synthetic approaches generally involve many tedious steps and are time-consuming. Here we present a facile method to synthesize N-doped TiO2 hollow spheres using organic silane-doped silica nanoparticles as templates. The organic-inorganic silica can be simultaneously etched during the deposition of TiO2 shell to create a thin silica layer on the TiO2 surface. Such a thin silica layer can efficiently protect the TiO2 nanocrystals from growing larger during high-temperature calcination. At the same time, the organic silane can serve as a nitrogen source to be doped in the TiO2 shell. The developed silica-protected and N-doped TiO2 hollow spheres can be directly employed as photocatalysts without SiO2 etching and show obvious light utilization in both UV and visible bands.

Abstract:Titanium dioxide nanotube and nanorod arrays were successfully prepared by the combination of solgel and AAO (anodic aluminum oxide) membrane fabrication. The precursor of titanium dioxide solgel is tetra-isopropyl titanite, and the dipping processing is based on direct dipping or under negative pressure. The products were characterized with FE-SEM, HR-TEM and XRD after heat treatment of samples at 450℃ and removing AAO membranes with NaOH. The results show that the template method is effective in fabricating nanotube arrays, and the products were polycrystalline. The outer diameter of nanotubes is determined by the pore size of template. The pore size and thickness of the membranes used in the experiments were 200 nm and 60 μm respectively.

Abstract:A facile route was presented to fabricate mesoporous anatase titania spheres at low temperature; the titania precursor sphere was prepared through a template-free process and then treated by the boiling water. X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) were adopted to characterize the morphology and crystal structure of the products. The adsorption properties and photocatalytic activities were also investigated. The results indicated that the porous structure and anatase nanocrystals were gradually formed from the surface to the interior of the titania precursor spheres with increasing treatment time. Moreover, there was little change in the size of the spheres during boiling water treatment, thus the size of the mesoporous anatase titania spheres could be easily tailored by controlling the diameter of precursor spheres. The as-prepared product showed excellent adsorption capacity and photocatalytic activity than the commercial P25 due to its high specific surface area.

Abstract:Hollow titanium dioxide (TiO2) microspheres are important metal oxide nanomaterials that can be synthesized via facile template-free solvothermal method based on the Ostwald ripening process. The properties of the organic solvents imposed significant effects on the microstructures and properties of the final products. However, the effects of solvent type were less understood during the formation of hollow TiO2 microspheres. So in this work, four organic solvents, namely methanol, isopropanol, ethanediol and actone, were selected to mix with ethanol as the mixed solvents for the solvothermal synthesis of hollow TiO2 microspheres based on the Ostwald ripening process. Special attentions were paid to the morphology and crystallinity of TiO2 nanostructures. A series of characterization results showed that acetone had significant effects on the construction of hollow structures due to its moderate polarity, low boiling point and viscosity. This method demonstrated the great controllability of the hollow structures. The TiO2 nanostructures with hollow structures exhibited an enhanced performance for degradation of Rhodamine B. When irradiated with ultraviolet light for 120 min, the residual rates of RhB solutions were almost zero.

Abstract:Uniform-sized and monodispersed boehmite core–shell and hollow spheres have been successfully synthesized using a template-free solvothermal route. The experimental parameters such as reaction duration, the trisodium citrate amounts and solvents are shown to play important roles in the formation of the AlOOH core–shell and hollow spheres. X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform IR, thermal gravimetric analysis, N2 adsorption/desorption, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and high-resolution TEM were used to characterize the products. The results show that the prepared polycrystalline hollow spheres are composed of well-aligned AlOOH nanowires and have an orthorhombic structure. Finally, a dissolution–renucleation mechanism was proposed for the formation of boehmite hollow structures.

Abstract:TiO2–Ag nanocomposites with well‐crystallized TiO2 and randomly distributed metallic Ag nanoparticles were obtained at low temperature (about 50°C) by a modified sol–gel method. The size of TiO2 crystallite was 5–6 nm. With the increasing Ag, Ag particle size increased and the size distribution broadened both due to the agglomeration of Ag crystallites. TiO2–Ag nanocomposites prepared in the present work showed better photocatalytic activity than pure TiO2 prepared under the same conditions. An optimal photocatalyst was obtained when the molar ratio of Ag to Ti was 1:9.

Abstract:Ti-peroxy compound was synthesized from Ti(O-iPr)4 and H2O2. Anatase and rutile TiO2 nanoparticles were prepared by heating the Ti-peroxy compound diluted with a polyol aqueous solution at 368 K for 24 h. In this research, ethylene glycol, glycerin, erythritol, and D-mannitol were used as polyols in the diluting solution. The ratio of anatase/rutile of the TiO2 obtained depended on the polyol concentration in the diluting solution. Furthermore, the polyol concentration at which single-phase anatase could be obtained was lowest when the number of OH groups in the polyol molecule was the highest. With increasing polyol concentration, the obtained TiO2 nanoparticles showed increasing specific surface area and decreasing particle size.

Abstract:Size-controllable TiO2 nanoparticles were prepared by the controlled hydrolysis and condensation of titanium glycolated precursor with EG as chelating reagent and acids as catalysts in acetone medium.Particles with the diameter ranged from 942nm to 52nm could be prepared by changing the types of acids and the concentration of titanium butoxide.The as-synthesized amorphous particles were converted to anatase and then to rutile after thermal treatment at 350 °C and 800 °C,respectively.The morphology and the structure of the particles were studied.Also the effects of different acids as catalysts were investigated.

Abstract:In this study, TiO2 hollow microspheres were synthesized by deposition of TiO2 on the chitosan/gelatin microspheres with a subsequent sintering process for removal of organic components. The as-synthesized microspheres are characterized with SEM, EDS, FT-IR and XRD. The results show that TiO2 hollow microspheres were spherical in morphology with a diameter of 50–300 μm and possessed a hollow structure with a shell thickness of 500–600 nm. It is found that the chitosan/gelatin microspheres served as both supporting matrix and sacrificial templates for formation of hollow microspheres. MTT assays quantitatively indicate that TiO2 hollow microspheres favored the attachment of fibroblast L929 cells and promoted cell proliferation with increasing culture time.

Abstract:The paper describes a methodology for fabricating hollow microspheres of tin dioxide by utilizing carbonaceous saccharide microspheres as templates. The fabricated SnO 2 microspheres exhibit uniform morphology and high crystallinity, which were verified with X-ray diffraction analyses and electron microscopy images. Through controlling different solvent and heating rate, we can accurately control the uniformity, dispersion and surface morphology of the hollow microspheres. Additionally, the study explored the utilization of the prepared SnO 2 hollow microspheres and SnO 2 nanoparticles in the degradation of Rhodamine B as detected by ultraviolet ray. Test data results indicated that the photocatalytic efficiency of SnO 2 hollow microspheres surpassed that of the nanoparticles, attributed to the former’s multi-level reflection of light, resulting in effective light utilization. The hollow SnO 2 microspheres can serve as an excellent candidate for a photocatalyst, and this controllable yet sample synthesis route is anticipated to be employed for production of numerous hollow metal oxide structures with superior photoelectric properties.
