Abstract:The joint of 40Cr steel and TiAl based alloy has been studied by means of a high frequency induction diffusion welder. The experimental results show that, the higher the temperature and pressure, the higher the strength of the joints. The optimum parameters are: T＝1123～1323 K,t＝10～30 min, P＝5～20 MPa.

Abstract:Diffusion bonding of TiAl-based alloy to steel was carried out at 850–1100 °C for 1–60 min under a pressure of 5–40 MPa in this paper. The relationship of the bond parameters and tensile strength of the joints was discussed, and the optimum bond parameters were obtained. When products are diffusion-bonded, the optimum bond parameters are as follows: bonding temperature is 930–960 °C, bonding pressure is 20–25 MPa, bonding time is 5–6 min. The maximum tensile strength of the joint is 170–185 MPa. The reaction products and the interface structures of the joints were investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), electron probe X-ray microanalysis (EPMA) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). Three kinds of reaction products were observed to have formed during the diffusion bonding of TiAl-based alloy to steel, namely Ti3Al+FeAl+FeAl2 intermetallic compounds formed close to the TiAl-based alloy. A decarbonised layer formed close to the steel and a face-centered cubic TiC formed in the middle. The interface structure of diffusion-bonded TiAl/steel joints is TiAl/Ti3Al+FeAl+FeAl2/TiC/decarbonised layer/steel, and this structure will not change with bond time once it forms. The formation of the intermetallic compounds results in the embrittlement of the joint and poor joint properties. The thickness of each reaction layer increases with bonding time according to a parabolic law. The activation energy Q and the growth velocity K0 of the reacting layer Ti3Al+FeAl+FeAl2+TiC in the diffusion-bonded joints of TiAl base alloy to steel are 203 kJ/mol and 6.07 mm2/s, respectively. Careful control of the growth of the reacting layer Ti3Al+FeAl+FeAl2+TiC can influence the final joint strength.

Abstract:TiA1 alloy was diffusion bonded to 40Cr steel in vacuum furnace. Results showed, at the TiA1 -40Cr inter face, the reaction layer of mixture was formed closest to TiA1 base, TiC layer was formed in the middle and obvious decarbonised layer was formed closest to 40Cr steel side. The widths of the three reaction layer increased with the increase of the bond temperature and the bond time. The ambient ultimate tensile strengths of the tested joints were poor, and fractography revealed that all joints fractured in the TiC layer, producing brittle cleavage fracture surface. High bond temperature and short bong time was propitious to decresing metallic compounds resulting in brittleness of the weld joint and obtaining high good properties of bonding.

Abstract:Ti3Al and Ti2 AlNb alloys were joined by direct diffusion welding.The influence of bonding pressure,bonding temperature and holding time on the interface morphology and property of the joint was studied.The interface structure was analyzed by SEM,EDS and XRD,and the mechanical properties of joints were tested.The results show that typical interface structure of direct diffusion bonding joints is Ti3Al/O-phase and α2-phase/B2-rich phase/Ti2 AlNb. When bonding temperature is1000℃,holding time is 60 min,bonding pressure is 5MPa,the shear strength could reach 635 MPa and the tensile strength could reach 795 MPa.Both joints fracture at the Ti3Al-base alloy.After thermal cycling(1000℃/60min),the tensile strength of Ti3 Al decreases to 76% of the original strength.Welding defects occur when bonding temperature is below 950℃ or holding time is less than 60 min.The bonding temperature higher than 1050℃ or holding time more than 120 min will lead to phase transition of Ti3 Al.

Abstract:Diffusion bonding between W and ferritic/martensitic steel F82H using a Ti interlayer was carried out in vacuum at temperature range of 850–950°C for 1h with 10MPa. Metallographic analysis with field-emission scanning electron microscopy revealed excellent bonding at both W/Ti and Ti/F82H interfaces. The chemical compositions of the reaction products were analyzed by energy dispersive spectroscopy and their existence were confirmed by X-ray diffraction technique. α–β Ti solid solution was detected at W/Ti interface, while the reaction phases at Ti/F82H interface are dependent on the joining temperature. Joint strength was evaluated and the variations in strength of the joints were significantly related to the microstructural evolution of the diffusion zone. All the joints fractured at Ti/F82H interface during shear testing. The hardness distribution across the joining interfaces was also determined.

Abstract:TiAl intermetallics was diffusion bonded to steel 40Cr in vacuum furnace. The results show that at the TiAl-40Cr interface the mixture reaction layer of Ti3Al+FeAl+FeAl2 is formed close to the TiAl base, TiC layer is formed in the middle and obvious decarbonized layer is formed closest to the steel 40Cr side. The whole reaction process can be divided into three stages. In the first stage, TiC layer is formed at the interface TiAl/40Cr, as well, decarbonized layer occurs on the steel 40Cr side. In the second stage, TiAl, FeAl2 and FeAl are formed adjacent to TiAl, in the mean, the continuous diffusion of Al atoms from TiAl to 40Cr gives rise to the formation of Ti3Al. In the last stage, the thickness of each reaction layer increases with bonding time according to a parabolic law. The growth energy Q and the growth velocity K0 of reaction layer Ti3Al+FeAl+FeAl2+TiC in the diffusion-bonded joints of the TiAl base alloy to steel 40Cr are 203.017kJ/mol and 6.074mm2/s, respectively, and the growth formula (thickness of reaction layer) is y2=6.074×10-6exp(-203017.48/RT)t. By virtue of this formula, the growth of reaction layer Ti3Al+FeAl+FeAl2+TiC can be presetted and controlled.

Abstract:In this study, intermetallic TiAl and steel are diffusion bonded successfully by using composite barrier layers of titanium/vanadium/copper. The relationship of the bond parameters and tensile strength of the joints is discussed, and the optimum bond parameters were obtained. The reaction products and the interface structures of the joints were investigated by SEM, EPMA, and XRD. In this case, a dual phase Ti3Al+TiAl layer and a Ti solid solution, which enhances the strength of the joint, are obtained at the TiAl/Ti interface. A formation mechanism at the interface of TiAl/Ti was proposed. The whole reaction process can be divided into three stages. In the first stage, Ti (Alss) layer is formed at the interface TiAl/titanium. In the second stage, the continuous diffusion of Al atoms from TiAl to titanium leads to the formation of Ti3Al, a TiAl+Ti3Al layer is formed adjacent to TiAl. In the last stage, the thickness of each reaction layer increases with bonding time according to a parabolic law. The interface of TiAl/titanium/vanadium/copper/steel was free from intermetallic compounds and other brittle phases, and the strength of the joint was as high as 420 MPa, very close to that of the TiAl base. This method provides a reliable bonding method of intermetallic TiAl and steel.

Abstract:TiAl intermetallic compound was joined to 40Cr steel by diffusion bonding at the temperature range of 1 173～ 1 373 K for 0.3～5 .4 ks in vacuum. Reaction phases and interface structures were investigated by S EM, EPMA analysis and XRD diffraction method. At the bonding temperature of 1 3 73 K, four phases of TiC, Ti 3Al, FeAl and FeAl 2 were established and three layers were formed in the TiAl/40Cr joint, the interface structures were observe d as TiAl/ Ti 3Al+FeAl+FeAl 2/TiC/decarbonized layer/40Cr steel. The total rea ction layer grows with the joining time following the parabolic law, the activat ion energy Q and rate constants k 0 for the growth are 211.9 kJ/mol an d 4.6×10 -5 m 2/s respectively. At the 0.3 μm reaction layer thicknes s of TiC+Ti 3Al+FeAl+FeAl 2, the maximum strength of the TiAl/40Cr joint is up to 183 MPa at room temperature.

Abstract:High vacuum diffusion bonding of Ti-23Al-17Nb alloy was performed using the thermal-mechanical simulator Gleeble 1500D to obtain high-strength joints in a Ti3Al-based alloy.Tests show that large bonding parameters favor interfacial bonding but increase the deformation ratio of the joints and coarsen the B2 matrix phase.The optimal bonding temperature is 980℃,the pressure is 7 MPa and the holding time is 30 min with average joint tensile strengths at room temperature of 921 MPa and at 650℃ of 639 MPa,95% and 91% of the base materials' strengths.Tensile fractures for these joints with small bonding parameters occur at the bonding interface,while joint fractures with large bonding parameters occur in the base materials away from the bonding interface in the quasi-cleavage fracture mode.

Abstract:In this study, reliable Ti2AlNb/high-Nb-containing TiAl alloy (TAN) joints were achieved by diffusion bonding. The effects of bonding temperature and holding time on the interfacial microstructure and mechanical properties were fully investigated. The interfacial structure of joints bonded at various temperatures and holding times was characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive spectrometer (EDS) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The results show that the typical microstructure of the Ti2AlNb substrate/O phase/Al(Nb,Ti)(2) + Ti3Al/Ti3Al/TAN substrate was obtained at 970 degrees C for 60 min under a pressure of 5 MPa. The formation of the O phase was earlier than the Al(Nb,Ti)(2) phase when bonding temperature was relatively low. When bonding temperature was high enough, the Al(Nb,Ti)(2) phase appeared earlier than the O phase. With the increase of bonding temperature and holding time, the Al(Nb,Ti)(2) phase decomposed gradually. As the same time, continuous O phase layers became discontinuous and the Ti3Al phase coarsened. The maximum bonding strength of 66.1 MPa was achieved at 970 degrees C for 120 min.
Enhanced Tensile Strength of Tial/Ti2alnb Diffusion Bonding Joint by a Novel Post-Bonded Hot Deformation

Abstract:Dissimilar TiAl-based alloys weld by solid-state bonding, also known as diffusion bonding (DB), usually show brittle intermetallic compounds, high interfacial stress, and poor properties. A novel post-bonded process strategy, slight deformation in the direction of stress parallel to the bonding interface, was developed in the post-bonded treatment of the TiAl/Ti2AlNb joint. The effect of post-bonded processes on the interfacial microstructure, element diffusion, fracture characteristics and mechanical properties were systematically investigated. The results showed that the post-bonded hot deformation (PBHD), compared to the traditional post-bonded heat treatment (PBHT), can effectively increase the major elements diffuse and the growth of the reaction layer, as well as promote the precipitates which distribute uniformly in the reaction layer, finally resulting in superior tensile strength. Compared with the DB samples, the ultimate tensile strength of the PBHD joint increased by 45.58%. In addition, the fracture behavior was further analyzed based on the microfracture morphology and crack propagation path. These findings will facilitate the development of advanced manufacturing processes of blisk for high-temperature light alloys.

Abstract:Diffusion bonding of additive manufactured (AM) metal parts to traditionally manufactured metal parts could simultaneously achieve large-scale, complex-structure, and multi-material parts. However, there is a lack of study on diffusion bonding as well as its interface formation mechanism between AM metal parts and traditionally manufactured metal parts. In this study, diffusion bonding was performed to join AM 316L stainless steel and casting 45 steel at different temperatures. The element distribution, interface characteristics and shear strength of the joints were investigated, and the interface formation mechanism at different bonding temperature was analyzed in detail. The results reveal that the interface transition zone from the AM 316L steel side to the 45 steel side is composed of the metallic elements diffusion layer and the carbide layer. Moreover, an increase in bonding temperature can effectively promote interface voids closure and increase the thickness of the metallic elements diffusion layer, while the thickness of the carbide layer firstly increases and then decreases as the temperature increases. The component of the carbide layer was identified as brittle compounds (CrFe)23C6 and (CrFe)7C3. The shear strength of the joints exhibited an increasing trend with the increasing bonding temperature. Interestingly, a sudden decrease in strength was found at 950 °C due to the significant increase of the brittle carbide layer, while high-quality joints could be achieved as the brittle carbides dissolve at 1000 °C. This study could lay the foundation for understanding diffusion bonding interface behaviors between AM metal parts and traditional casting metal parts.
Spark Plasma Diffusion Bonding of TiAl/Ti2AlNb with Ti as Interlayer

Abstract:To solve the problem of poor weldability between TiAl-based and Ti2AlNb-based alloys, spark plasma diffusion bonding was employed to join a TiAl alloy and a Ti2AlNb alloy with a pure Ti foil as interlayer at 950 °C/10 KN/60 min. After welding, slow cooling was carried out at a rate of 5 °C/min, followed by homogenization at 800 °C for 24 h. The microstructural evolution and elemental migration of the joint were analyzed via a scanning electron microscope equipped with an energy dispersive spectrometer, while the mechanical properties of the joint were assessed via microhardness and tensile tests. The results show that the spark plasma diffusion bonding formed a joint of TiAl/Ti/Ti2AlNb without microcracks or microvoids, while also effectively protecting the base metal. Before heat treatment, the maximum hardness value (401 HV) appeared at the Ti2AlNb/Ti interface, while the minimum hardness value (281 HV) occurred in the TiAl base metal. The tensile strength of the heat-treated joint at room temperature was measured to be up to 454 MPa, with a brittle fracture occurring in the interlayer. The tensile strength of the joint at 650 °C was measured to be up to 538 MPa, with intergranular cracks occurring in the TiAl base metal.

Abstract:Intermetallics TiAl was diffusion-bonded to steel 40Cr in vacuum furnace with interlayer V/Cu. The results show that infinite sosoloid that made for bond performance is formed at the interface of V/Cu and Cu/40Cr, and three acting layers are formed at the interface of TiAl/V including Ti3Al layer at TiAl side, intermittent V5Al8 layer in the middle and Ti-V sosoloid at V side. Fragile reactors V5Al8 arising at the interface lead to bad performance of joints, and the strength of the joint is 200MPa, while it was still higher than the strength of the joint intermetallics TiAl to 40Cr steel diffusion-bonded directly. Intermetallic TiAl and 40Cr steel are diffusion-bonded successfully by using a composite isolation layer V/Cu.

Abstract:Vacuum diffusion bonding (DB) of as-extruded Ti-47.5Al-Cr-V (at.%) alloy was carried out at 1000-1100 degrees C at a pressure of 10-30 MPa for 1-3 h, and the bonded joints were post-bond heat treated (PBHT) at 1360 degrees C for 0.5 h. Subsequently, the shear strength of all the joints was measured, and the microstructure was observed. The results showed that the shear strength and bonding interface quality of joints increased under as-bonded and PBHT conditions with the increase of each bonding parameter (temperature, pressure, and time). The shear strength of the base material was 486 MPa, and it was 665 MPa after PBHT. Furthermore, the maximum shear strength of the as-bonded joints was over 80% of that of the base material. After PBHT, the maximum strength of the joints was nearly equal to that of the base material. The fracture morphologies of the as-bonded and PBHT joints were analyzed, and the fracture mode was changed from transgranular fracture to intergranular fracture. The optimal bonding parameters were proposed: T >= 1050 degrees C, p >= 20 MPa, and t >= 2 h. (C) 2018 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Transient liquid phase diffusion bonding of Ti–22Al–25Nb (at.%) alloy with Ti–15Cu–15Ni (wt.%) was performed. The factors influencing the microstructure and strength of the joints were studied. A suitably long holding time and high bonding temperature would benefit the formation of joints with homogeneous compositions and high strength. Nb element is the mainly controlling one to the formation of composition-homogenous bonding zone. The bonding zone of joint with a rapid cooling technology after dwelling at bonding temperature is composed of B2 phase. Slow cooling technology is beneficial to improving the joint strength. The tensile strength at room temperature of the joint under the joining conditions of bonding temperature 970°C for 90min with a slow cooling technology reaches up to 1018MPa, which is equal to 93% of base material tensile strength, obviously higher than the joint strength of 931MPa with a rapid cooling technology.

Abstract:Diffusion bonding of TiAl-based alloy to Ni-based alloy using Ti/Nb composite interlayer was carried out.The formation phases and the interfacial microstructure of the joints were investigated by scanning electron microscopy,electron probe X-ray analysis and X-ray diffraction.The bonding strength of the joints was evaluated through shear test.The results show that the typical interfacial microstructure of the joint is GH99/(Ni,Cr)ss/Ni3Nb/Ni6Nb7/(Ti,Nb)ss/α-Ti+(Ti,Nb)ss/Ti3Al/TiAl.The maximum shear strength of 273.8 MPa can be achieved under the condition of T=900 ℃ for t=30 min and p=20 MPa.With the joining temperature T increasing,the interfacial microstructure and thickness of reaction layer changes.When the brazing temperature T900 ℃,Ni6Nb7 reaction layer which has bad effect on the bonding strength forms.Based on the experimental results,the formation process of reaction layer was analyzed and interfacial reaction mechanism of the interface of GH99/Nb and Nb/Ti/TiAl was revealed.

Abstract:The Ti2AlNb alloy and TiBw/Ti64 composites were successfully bonded using a Ti interlayer at 900 degrees C-1050 degrees C for 20-80 min. The interface of the joints showed a layered microstructure. Moreover, the width of the diffusion zone gradually increased from 30 to 58 mu m owing to sufficient atomic diffusion and phase transition at higher bonding temperatures with longer bonding times. The elemental concentration gradients caused by atomic diffusion promoted the precipitation of the O phase (Zone I) and the growth of the lamellar alpha phase (Zone II). A well-bonded joint was obtained and showed the highest shear strength of 460.9 MPa. Microcracks emerged in the diffusion zone and propagated into the TiBw/Ti64 substrate during the shear test, and the fracture mechanism inside the composites was intergranular ductile fracture mode.
Hot pressing diffusion bonding of a titanium alloy to a stainless steel with an aluminum alloy interlayer

Abstract:The probability and appropriate processing parameters of hot pressing diffusion bonding (HP–DW) of a titanium alloy (TC4) to a stainless steel (1Cr18Ni9Ti) with an aluminum alloy (LF6) interlayer have been investigated. The microstructure of the bonded joints has been observed by optical microscopy, SEM, XRD and EDX, and the main factors affecting hot pressing and diffusion bonding process were analyzed. The results showed that atom diffused well and no intermetallic compound or other brittle compounds appeared at optimum parameters. The fracture way of joints was ductile fracture. With the increment of bonding temperature, large number of intermetallic compounds such as FeAl6, Fe3Al, FeAl2 which were brittle appeared along the interface between the stainless steel and the aluminum alloy interlayer, as a result, the quality of joints was decreased significantly and the fracture way of joints was brittle fracture.

Abstract:Ti-6Al-4V (wt.%) and Ti-22Al-25Nb (at.%) were joined by diffusion bonding at 950 °C and 15 MPa for 100 min, and the microstructure and mechanical properties of the resulting joints were investigated. The composition of the diffusion layer is B2/discontinuous α/α2 layer/necklace-shaped β+α′ layer, where the content of any element at a given point mainly depends on the distance of the point from the interface and the phase type at the point. The tensile strength of the joint is 894 MPa, which is almost the same as that of the Ti-22Al-25Nb base alloy. The fracture surfaces on both sides of the joint are composed of two main regions. One region displays a relatively flat surface and fractures along the bonding interface. The other is composed of a moderate number of irregularly-shaped cavities on the Ti-6Al-4V side and many irregularly-shaped bulges on the Ti-22Al-25Nb side. Both regions result from fracture along the boundaries between β+α′ layers and αp grains or from the transcrystalline fracture of αp grains.

Technological studies on diffusion bonding of Ti-6Al-4V/Cu/QAl10-3-1.5

Abstract:The diffusion bonding of Ti-6Al-4V and QAl10-3-1.5 with Cu interlayer has been performed. The effect of diffusion bonding parameters (bonding temperature and holding time) on the tensile strength and the microstructures of joints was studied, and the fracture appearances of the joints with different parameters were observed. Last, the combining products of the transition zone in the joint were identified. The result shows that the diffusion bonding of Ti-6Al-4V and QAl10-3-1.5 with Cu interlayer can be carried out under certain technological parameters. And the optimum tensile strength of the joints reaches 225 MPa under the optimum parameters (850°C bonding temperaturet, 60 min holding time and 10 MPa bonding press). When the bonding temperature is lower (<830°C) or the holding time is shorter (<30 min), the fracture style of the joint belongs to brittle rupture. And the fracture style under optimum parameters is plastic and brittle mixture fracture. Continually increasing bonding temperature or holding time, the brittleness of the joint increases and the plasticity decreases. The whole transition zone of the joint from QAl10-3-1.5 to Ti-6Al-4V is QAl10-3-1.5/Cu/Cu(ss. Ti)/CuTi3/Ti(ss. Cu)/β-Ti/Ti-6Al-4V.
