Abstract:As an important reactive power compensation equipment in power system, dry-type air-core shunt reactor is widely used in power grid because of its low cost and small maintenance. In operation, the failure rate and defect rate are relatively high. One of the typical failures is that the interturn insulation fault finally causes the fire. It is found that the cracks in the operation of dry reactor are one of the main causes of insulation failure. In this paper, through theoretical analysis and experimental research, the mechanism of microcracks in dry-type air-core reactor is preliminarily explored, and some of the causes of cracks are experimentally studied. The effects of main material characteristics and temperature conditions on cracks of dry-type air-core reactor are given. The low temperature environment has a great influence on the mechanical properties of the dry-type air-core reactor winding, which mainly shows that the overall stress of winding increases with the decrease of temperature, and the stress on each encapsulated winding is also unevenly distributed; however, the bonding performance of the encapsulated material and the conductor decreases obviously with the decrease of temperature. When the reactor is switched in low temperature and cold state for many times, under the combined action of two factors, it is possible to crack the enveloping insulation at the place with the largest winding stress, make the external moisture intrude, and cause partial discharge. After a long time of cumulative effect, the local turn-to-turn fault is finally formed, which leads to equipment accidents.
Research on AC and High Frequency Breakdown Characteristics of Oil-paper Insulation of 220 Kv Current Transformers

Abstract:The AC Breakdown test at 20 °C, 50 °C and 80 °C and the high-frequency breakdown test at 5 kHz, 10 kHz, and 14 kHz of the oil-paper insulation of the 220 kV current transformer with different thermal aging time is investigated. The breakdown characteristics were explored, and the Weibull distribution was used to process the data. As the aging time increases and the test temperature increases, the AC breakdown strength of oil-paper insulation continues to decrease, and the increase in temperature has a significantly greater impact on the insulation strength than the aging time. With the increase of the voltage frequency, the breakdown field strength of the sample continues to decrease, and with the increase of the aging time, the resistance of the insulating sample to high-frequency voltage gradually becomes worse. The results can provide theoretical support for the safe operation of 220 kV current transformers at different temperatures and high frequencies.

Abstract:The electric and thermal combined deterioration mechanism of the oil-paper insulation of the 220 kV current transformer with different thermal aging times is investigated. The breakdown strengths and breakdown time are obtained with different dwelling times. Furthermore, the life exponents under different temperatures and different aging times are evaluated by a step-by-step increasing voltage test. Finally, the four multi-factor aging models about the remaining life, the electric field, and the temperature are developed. It is shown that the breakdown voltages and the breakdown time decrease rapidly with the increase of the temperature or the thermal aging time, whereas the breakdown time increases with the increase of the dwelling time. The life exponent of the oil-paper is more sensitive to the thermal aging at room temperature, whereas it is more sensitive to the temperature compared to the thermal aging when the temperature exceeds 50 °C. The expected life of the oil paper decreases with the increase of the temperature and thermal aging time. Moreover, the remaining life is inversely related to the electric field and the temperature in the three multi-factor aging models. CRINE model has the best fitting accuracy among the three models. The results can provide theoretical support for the safe operation of the 220 kV current transformer.

Abstract:There are few good evaluation methods to evaluate CDM ESD protection performance such as device turn-on speed, etc. A new current-waveform-based method to evaluate the turn-on speed of an ESD protection device is proposed. The method uses two Transmission-Line Pulse (TLP) Tester to investigate the turn-on characteristics of SCR and related devices. Both intrinsic and normalized turn-on conditions are defined for protection devices to study the different factors that affect the turn-on characteristic under various conditions. The turn-on of both forwardly and reversely working of devices is measured for the CDM model including positive and negative currents. From the experimental results, it is concluded that NMLSCR's performance is superior to PMLSCR in turn-on speed; MLSCR requires higher It1 to be turned on; and the turn-on speed of a PMLSCR decreases significantly with small increases in pulse amplitude under intrinsic working condition while NMLSCR and LSCR do not exhibit such property.

Abstract:Dry-type air-core shunt reactors are integral components in power transmission and distribution networks, designed to control reactive power and enhance system stability. However, inter-turn short-circuit faults (ISCFs) are common occurrences in shunt reactors, which are caused by various factors, including manufacturing defects, insulation degradation, or operational stresses. At the early stage of the ISCFs, the current does not reach a sufficient level to activate the protective equipment. These faults may lead to serious consequences, such as overheating, insulation breakdown, and even catastrophic failures, posing risks to the entire power system. Therefore, developing an effective and reliable detection method for ISCFs at the early stage is paramount. In this paper, a new method named the fault detection factor (FDF) based on equivalent resistance is presented to detect the slight ISCFs in dry-type air-core shunt reactors considering insulation resistance. In addition, the effect of noise signal existence in the monitoring process is taken into account. A moving average filter is adopted to guarantee both the sensitivity and the reliability of the proposed method. Ultimately, the simulation results of the FDF under different conditions are presented, which show the effectiveness and potential of the proposed method in observing and monitoring slight ISCFs.

Abstract:A principal part of the Comprehensive Research Facility for Fusion Technology (CRAFT) is the toroidal field (TF) coil project, which aims at fabricating a prototype TF coil for China Fusion Engineering Test Reactor (CFETR). The TF coil is composed of 3-D-shaped subwinding packs (sub-WPs) enclosed in a stainless coil case, and the conductor core of medium and high field sub-WPs is Nb 3 Sn, following the "Winding & Reaction" manufacturing process. After heat treatment of the conductor, turn insulation will be automatically wrapped. Strictly restricted by the brittleness of the heat-treated Nb 3 Sn, the strain must be controlled during the wrapping process. Presented in this article is a description of the CRAFT TF coil and its turn insulation structure, followed by descriptions of the structural design of the wrapping unit and mathematical models about wrapping control of the wrapping machine. Turn insulation wrapping trials are performed with one-fourth part of the wrapping unit, and tapes with a fixed width and a uniform steel tube are used as specimens, verifying the correctness of the structure and models. The one-fourth part of the wrapping unit has been fabricated in March 2022 and it is foreseen that the fabrication will be finished in June 2022.

Abstract:For a single-phase earth fault of 35 kV dry-type reactor, the 5th package area is found with serious turn-to-turn short circuit after it conducts the DC resistance test, turn-to-turn insulation test of high frequency oscillation pulse and rework disassembly. The turn-to-turn short circuit of resistance will lead to wire fusing, which makes the conventional pre-test projects have limitations. With COMSOL finite element thermal field simulation of the fault 35kV dry-type reactor, the temperature distribution result of the reactor indicates that the hottest point is at the 6th package during the reactor operation and the temperature rises 73.75K. In addition, the temperature rises of the 5th, 7th, 14th, 15th package is also higher than other packages, which easily causes device failure due to insulation deterioration. Through the analysis and thermal field simulation of the test for failed reactor, it can provide the reference basis for equipment design, manufacture, daily repair and maintenance.

Abstract:This paper proposes a demagnetization method for iron core current transformers (CT). A dc voltage source is used to charge an inductor, and the discharging effect of the charged inductor is used to demagnetize the remanent flux of the iron core CT. To verify the performance of the proposed method, the different core characteristics, level of remanent flux, and possible errors in all elements and measured core characteristics are analyzed with EMTP-RV simulator.

Abstract:Dielectric test is the main measurement to verify the insulation character of generator stator windings.Due to the different production technology transferred abroad,the test voltage value of 1 000 MW generator manufactured in China varied a lot.The deviation reasons between the test values and standard requirements by two cases was analyzed.The deviation reason was that the domestic manufactures use the technology specification of the transferor,so the test requirements were inconsistent with the domestic standards.

Abstract:A reactor is an important piece of equipment used for reactive power compensation in power system and has a significant impact on the safe operation of power system. Thermal behavior is one of the main causes of reactor failures. For an accurate analysis of the thermal behavior of reactors, electromagnetic–thermal–fluid multi-physics coupling modeling is chosen. However, there is a huge difference in size between the overall structure of the reactor and its insulating material, which makes it difficult to perform mesh generation, resulting in dense mesh and significantly increased solution degrees of freedom, thus making the solution of the reactor’s multi-physics field model very time-consuming. To address this, this paper proposes a simplified processing method to accelerate the solution calculation of the reactor’s multi-physics model. This method calculates the equivalent turns of each encapsulate with parallel coils in the reactor, simplifying the encapsulate into a single-layer coil, thereby greatly reducing the division and solution degrees of freedom of the multi-physics model, and thus accelerating the simulation calculation. Taking a BKDCKL-20000/35 dry-type air-core shunt reactor as an example, the outer diameter of the coil is nearly 12,000 times bigger than the coil insulation, which is a huge size difference. Both refined models and simplified models are established. Compared to the simulation results of the detailed model, the simplified model demonstrates good accuracy; the maximum relative error of temperature is just 2.19%. Meanwhile, the computational time of the simplified model is reduced by 35.7%, which shows promising effectiveness and significant potential for applying the optimization design and operation prediction of dry-type air-core shunt reactors for enhanced thermal performance.

Abstract:Abstract Aiming at the insulation performance field diagnosis of 1000kV shunt reactors, the series resonant withstand voltage test equipment is developed. The test equipment mainly consists of the frequency conversion power supply, the excitation transformer, the series resonant capacitor, the wave blocking resistor and the voltage divider. The resonant frequency is between 30 and 300 Hz, the rated voltage is 1200kV, and the capacity is 1000 kW. During the test, the discharge is monitored at the high voltage bushing terminal and the 1000kV reactor insulation is analyzed. By using the developed test equipment, the 1000kV reactor in 1000kV Xuyi Station is tested, which verifies the validity of the on-site partial discharge measurement test.

Abstract:During the operation of the Dry-type Air-core Reactor (DAR), the insulation material deteriorates due to local overheating of the encapsulation, and the reactor is burned in severe conditions. Therefore, studying the temperature rise of the reactor plays an important role in the reliability of its operation and the economy of design and production. According to the structural characteristics of the reactor, the three-dimensional thermal field model of the aluminum wire-insulation structure of the reactor is established, and the encapsulation temperature field distribution of the reactor under steady state is obtained. Compare the simulation result with the encapsulation temperature field distribution of the equivalent structure. The results show that the highest temperature of the aluminum wire-insulation structure encapsulation rises to 73.51∘∘C, which is located in the middle of the reactor. Each encapsulation hotspot is located about 20% from the upper edge of the encapsulation. In the temperature rise test, a Fiber Bragg Grating (FGB) temperature sensor is installed about 20% from the upper edge of the encapsulation. The test shows that the most significant value of temperature rise of the reactor is 73∘∘C, which is located in the middle of the reactor. The temperature rise test results verify the accuracy of the simulated calculation value of the temperature field of the aluminum wire-insulated reactor and provide a reference for the temperature rise calculation and temperature rise monitoring of the DAR.
Thermal-flow characteristics analysis of a novel resilient capacity ceramic insulated winding dry type transformer

Abstract:With the increasing demand for the resilient capacity of transformers in high-proportion renewable energy grids, the overload capacity of transformers and the thermal conductivity of winding insulation materials have been put forward as important requirements. In response to these requirements, a novel ceramic high temperature tolerance insulation winding is proposed in this paper and is applied in a ceramic insulated winding transformer. A combination of simulation and experimentation is used to analyze the thermal-flow characteristics of this transformer. The temperature and flow field distribution characteristics of transformers with both winding insulation methods (ceramic and Nomex paper) are compared. The internal mechanism of reflux near the iron core and high voltage winding under forced air cooling is clarified. A superior outside cooling condition is obtained. A prototype ceramic insulated winding transformer is developed and tested to verify the accuracy of the simulation model. The results show that the hotspot temperature of the ceramic insulated winding transformer under natural cooling is 10.7% lower than that of the Nomex paper insulated winding transformer. With forced air cooling of 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6 m/s applied at the bottom, the hotspot temperature of the ceramic insulated winding transformer is 11.4%, 10.5%, 9.7%, 14.0%, and 17.8% lower than that of the Nomex paper insulation winding transformer, respectively. Under forced air cooling, a reflux phenomenon is observed in both transformers in the vicinity of the iron core and high voltage winding due to the formation of adverse pressure gradient region and wall viscous force blocking. The strength of the reflux is affected by the magnitude of the forced air cooling flow velocity and the construction of the transformer. The optimal range of the external cooling flow velocity for the ceramic insulated winding transformer is 3–4 m/s. The errors between the simulated temperature and the measured temperature at the nine monitoring points of the prototype are all less than 5%, which verifies the effectiveness of the simulation model. The experimental and theoretical basis for the design and application of resilient capacity dry type transformers is provided by this research.

Abstract:In order to accurately evaluate the operation state of dry-type reactor, improving the diagnosis level of equipment faults and ensure the safe and reliable running of power grid, the structure and abnormal fault are analyzed based on the infrared thermometric technology. The abnormal heating fault of reactor are researched and summarized such as the high voltage wiring board, neutral point connection board, grounding bar, pillar insulator base and DC filter reactor wiring board, etc. According to the relevant detection data and standard regulations, the reason of heating for the above different parts are carried out, and given the targeted treatment scheme. The research results show that the abnormal heating are generated by circulating current in the metal components, neutral point, grounding bar and down lead of pillar base due to the influence of leakage magnetic field of dry-type air-core reactor and equipment installation process. The corresponding faults are established, which it provide a basis for the types of abnormal heating faults in dry air core reactor.

Abstract:This paper presents a study for the design of the insulation systems of high voltage pulse transformer based on experimental tests and numerical simulations. Data of high voltage tests on solid and liquid insulation materials are presented and discussed. The understanding of each part of the insulation is supported by electrostatic fields simulations.

Abstract:To study the partial discharge pulse propagation in turbine generator stator windings, which is correlated with condition monitoring of the generator insulation system, extensive tests have been conducted respectively on a 100MW stator windings and a 200 MW stator windings which are all undergoing manufacture. The results tested in an isolated bar, on a coil surrounding coils earthed, on a half phase windings as well as the finished phase windings in turn, are reported. The frequency characteristics, decay and delay of partial discharge pulse propagation in the stator windings are presented.

Abstract:To analyze interference induced by transient overvoltage, this article proposes an impulse injection technique for determining the impedance of a high-voltage air-core reactor over a wide frequency range. By injecting nanosecond pulses into reactor in open-circuit, short-circuit and loading conditions, the linear characteristics of air-core reactor can be revealed up to several MHz. Then the equivalent two-port impedance including stray parameters can be derived from the measured current waveforms. Using vector fitting and impedance synthesis, the equivalent circuit is obtained and can be further applied in transient simulation. As an example, a 110 kV reactor is studied in this paper and its equivalent circuit is deduced in the frequency range of [2.5 kHz, 10 MHz]. The accuracy of the model is validated based on the measurements of a loading experiment.

Abstract:Seven hundred fifty kilovolt extra-high voltage (EHV) shunt reactors are important power equipment that stabilize the normal operation of an entire 750 kV power grid. Internal winding faults of a reactor could be a difficult issue when the reactor is in service, and result in sudden equipment failure and significant economic losses. To prevent sudden catastrophic failure of equipment, online detection should be implemented to evaluate the state of the reactor properties when requested. In this paper, a noninvasive method based on online impulse frequency analysis was proposed and developed to detect internal winding faults of a 750 kV EHV shunt reactor. Initially, the safe implementation of the online detecting device was verified before field installation. Unlike in previous work, the online detecting device was modified and improved according to the specific situation of shunt reactors. Original fingerprints of 750 kV EHV shunt reactors were obtained and analyzed after site installation and normal operation of the detecting device. A fault simulation test was implemented to validate the method. This paper provides guidance on actual implementation of online impulse frequency response analysis on power equipment.
