Abstract:Self-propagating high-temperature synthesis (SHS) or combustion synthesis (CS) is a rapidly developing research area. SHS materials are being used in various fields, including mechanical and chemical engineering, medical and bioscience, aerospace and nuclear industries. The goal of the present paper is to provide a comprehensive state-of-the-art review and to analyse a critical mass of knowledge in the field of SHS materials and coatings. We also briefly discuss the history and scientific foundations of SHS along with an overview of the technological aspects for synthesis of different materials, including powders, ceramics, metal-ceramics, intermetallides, and composite materials. Application of CS in the field of surface engineering is also discussed focusing on two main routes for applying SHS to coating deposition: (i) single-step formation of the desired coatings and (ii) use of SHS-derived powders, targets or electrodes in the coating deposition processes.

Abstract:This paper reviews some coating technologies based on Self-propagating High-temperature Synthesis (SHS), including reactive thermal spraying, centrifugal-SHS process, molten-SHS coating and reactive casting coating. Their process, characteristics and coating properties are demonstrated. These coating technologies, usually used for preparing ceramic or cermet coatings, are attracting much attention because of notable advantages, such as energy saving, operation simplicity and high purity of the products.

Abstract:Firstly we introduced the main kinds of ferrite materials and preparing processes, especially the self-propagating high-temperature synthesis (SHS) technology and its process. Then combining the traditional MnZn ferrite preparation, the process and measurement results of the power ferrite (Zn0.16Mn0.78Fe2.06O4) that was prepared initially by SHS technology were discussed. The experimental result indicates that SHS is a hopeful process technology in the ferrite preparation.

Abstract:Using powder mixtures of Ti, Al and carbon black, Ti 3AlC 2 and Ti 2AlC was synthesized by self_propagating high temperature synthesis (SHS) reaction under the conditions of 1 600 ℃ for 4 h, pure argon atmosphere and a pressure of 25 MPa. The products were studied by XRD and SEM. The results show that the necessary condition for the synthesis reaction is a very high heating rate to avoid aluminum to melt and become the route of transferring Ti. The Ti 3AlC 2 and Ti 2AlC materials combine the merits of both the metals and the ceramics.

Abstract:Energy shortage, environmental crisis, and developing customer demands have driven people to find facile, low-cost, environmentally friendly, and nontoxic routes to produce novel functional materials that can be commercialized in the near future. Amongst various techniques, the hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) process of biomass (either of isolated carbohydrates or crude plants) is a promising candidate for the synthesis of novel carbon-based materials with a wide variety of potential applications. In this Review, we will discuss various synthetic routes towards such novel carbon-based materials or composites via the HTC process of biomass. Furthermore, factors that influence the carbonization process will be analyzed and the special chemical/physical properties of the final products will be discussed. Despite the lack of a clear mechanism, these novel carbonaceous materials have already shown promising applications in many fields such as carbon fixation, water purification, fuel cell catalysis, energy storage, CO(2) sequestration, bioimaging, drug delivery, and gas sensors. Some of the most promising examples will also be discussed here, demonstrating that the HTC process can rationally design a rich family of carbonaceous and hybrid functional carbon materials with important applications in a sustainable fashion.

Abstract:Al–TiC composites were produced by a casting route assisted by self-propagating high-temperature synthesis (SHS). Fluxes were used to activate a SHS reaction in the aluminum melt and promote higher Ti and C yield in the composites. The TiCx stoichiometry corresponded to C/Ti ratios from 1.0 to 0.8.

Abstract:Since the Material Genome Initiative (MGI) was proposed, high-throughput based technology has been widely employed in various fields of materials science. As a theoretical guide, material informatics has been introduced based on machine learning and data mining and high-throughput computation has been employed for large scale search, narrowing down the scope of the experiment trials. High-throughput materials experiments including synthesis, processing, and characterization technologies have become valuable research tools to pin down the prediction experimentally, enabling the discovery-to-deployment of advances materials more efficiently at a fraction of cost. This review aims to summarize the recent advances of high-throughput materials experiments and introduce briefly the development of materials design based on material genome concept. By selecting representative and classic works in the past years, various high-throughput preparation methods are introduced for different types of material gradient libraries, including metallic, inorganic materials, and polymers. Furthermore, high-throughput characterization approaches are comprehensively discussed, including both their advantages and limitations. Specifically, we focus on high-throughput mass spectrometry to analyze its current status and challenges in the application of catalysts screening.

Abstract:The effects of W content and preheat temperature on combustion temperature, combustion velocity and product components of self-propagating high-temperature synthesis(SHS) in Ti-W-C system were investigated. The results show that with decreasing W content and increasing preheat temperature, the combustion temperature and combustion velocity increases, the SHS reaction becomes complete and the particle size of product increases. There exist two combustion mechanisms. When Ti powder in combustion front was molten by high combustion temperature, SHS product was formed by melt-solution-precipitation mechanism. When the combustion temperature was not high enough to make Ti powder melt in combustion front, the product was formed through diffusion-solution-in-solid-state.

Abstract:Developing simple, rapid, and environmentally friendly synthetic methodologies for the preparation of functional nanomaterials is of great importance for broadening and improving their potential applications. In comparison with other methods, the microwave-assisted hydrothermal method possesses and combines the merits of microwave and hydrothermal methods, which can achieve the high temperature and high pressure for a short time from several minutes to several hours in a closed reaction system. In this review, the synthesis of various types of functional nanomaterials such as metals oxides, metal composite oxides, inorganic biomaterials (hydroxyapatite and calcium carbonate), and metal sulfides via the microwave-assisted hydrothermal method is summarized. The special properties and applications of functional nanomaterials by the microwave-assisted hydrothermal method are compared with others methods. The future developments of this promising method are put forward.

Abstract:The rapid development of hyper-sonic vehicles has put forward an urgent demand for ultra-high temperature resistance ceramic fibers ceramic matrix composites. The properties of ultrahigh-temperature ceramic matrix composites made of carbon-based ultra-high temperature resistance ceramic fibers are excellent. Therefore, the preparation processes of several commonly used carbide-resistant ultrahigh-temperature ceramic fibers are described in detail. This review compares the advantages and disadvantages of five common methods (Molten-salt synthesis method, Chemical Vapor Reaction Method, Chemical Vapor Deposited method, Sol-Gel Method & Polymer-Derived method) for preparing ceramic fibers, summarizes the preparation methods that should be used in the face of different preparation requirements, and evaluates the improvement and prospect of each method. Among them, the polymer-derived method, as the most difficult and effective preparation method, has been given great hope by material scientists.

Abstract:Combustion synthesis is a fast and energy-efficient process to prepare inorganic materials from self-sustained combustion reactions. It is widely used for preparing ceramics, metals, and their composites. The unique condition in combustion synthesis with high temperatures and large heating rates offers good opportunities to explore new materials and novel microstructures. This paper gives a viewpoint on recent progress in combustion synthesis, from fundamentals to applications. New results on theories, processings, and materials are reviewed, and perspectives on the development of combustion synthesis are provided.
