Abstract:Magnesium–iron mixed oxides with Mg/Fe molar ratios 1,3, and 6 were prepared from hydrotalcite-type precursors. Microcalorimetric adsorption of NH3and CO2showed that the surface acidity and basicity of the mixed oxides after calcination at 673 K are similar despite the different Mg/Fe ratios. Increasing calcination temperature from 673 to 773 K significantly decreased the surface area of the 3 Mg/Fe oxide, but the densities of both the acid and base sites were not changed. Mössbauer spectroscopy revealed that the reduction of the 3 Mg/Fe oxide (Fe2O3/MgO) in H2at 673 K converted all Fe3+to Fe2+. The resulted FeO/MgO exhibited the same acidity as that of the Fe2O3/MgO, but the basicity of the FeO/MgO was greatly enhanced. Reduction at 773 K resulted in the formation of 76% Fe2+and 24% Fe0as detected by Mössbauer spectroscopy. The Fe/FeO/MgO sample formed exhibited very low heat for the adsorption of NH3(40 kJ/mol) indicating that all iron atoms on the surface are Fe0. However, a substantial basicity remained on the surface of this sample that may account for its high olefin selectivity compared with pure iron catalyst in the Fischer–Tropsch synthesis.

Abstract:A microcalorimetric device for the measurement of differential heat of adsorption on the surface of solid catalysts is described. In the device, a Setaram heat flow microcalorimeter is used to measure the heat evolved from the sample. At the same time, an MKS Baratron capacitance manometer connected to a high vacuum system is employed to measure the amount of gas adsorbed on the sample. Besides, a special all-metal vessel for the measurement of differential heat of adsorption on highly active catalysts, which can be operated under the conditions of high vacuum and wide temperature range, was designed and constructed. The microcalorimeter was calibrated with standard materials. The measurement of differential heat of adsorption such as H-2 on Pt/SiO2 and gamma-Mo2N was carried out. The Pt/SiO2 sample was prepared by impregnation of silica with acetic solution of H2PtCl6.6H(2)O and the gamma-Mo2N sample was prepared by temperature-programmed reductive nitriding of highly pure MoO3 in a flow of pure NH3. The experimental results for the adsorption heat are in good agreement with those published in the literature. The error analysis of the experimental data shows that the relative errors for the measurement of adsorption heat are within 4%.

Abstract:Electrochemical carbon dioxide reduction to fuels presents one of the great challenges in chemistry. Herein we present an understanding of trends in electrocatalytic activity for carbon dioxide reduction over different metal catalysts that rationalize a number of experimental observations including the selectivity with respect to the competing hydrogen evolution reaction. We also identify two design criteria for more active catalysts. The understanding is based on density functional theory calculations of activation energies for electrochemical carbon monoxide reduction as a basis for an electrochemical kinetic model of the process. We develop scaling relations relating transition state energies to the carbon monoxide adsorption energy and determine the optimal value of this descriptor to be very close to that of copper.

Abstract:The reduction behaviors of the supported platinum–iron catalysts and their comparison with supported iron catalysts were studied by TPR (temperature-programmed reduction)–in situ 57Fe MBS (Mössbauer spectroscopy). The results indicated that the TPR processes of all Fe-containing catalysts were different from that of bulk α-Fe2O3. There were interactions between Pt, Fe and the γ-Al2O3 or SiO2 support for the Pt–Fe/γ-Al2O3 and Pt–Fe/SiO2 catalysts. All the iron-containing catalysts show that Fe3+ was highly dispersed on the support (γ-Al2O3 and SiO2) before reduction. No Fe0 was found in the reduction processes. The Fe3+ was reduced to Fe2+ in tetrahedral vacancy first for the reduction of the Pt–Fe/γ-Al2O3 catalyst. No Fe2+ in octahedral vacancy was found in the reduction of the Pt–Fe/SiO2 catalyst. Adding Pt to Fe/support (γ-Al2O3 or SiO2) could promote the reduction of the Fe species.

Abstract:The reduction behavior of silica supported iron and platinum-iron catalysts were studied by combined in situ temperature programmed reduction (TPR)-Mössbauer Spectroscopy (MBS). The results indicated that the TPR profiles of the supported Fe catalysts were different from that of bulk α-Fe 2 O 3 . There existed an interaction between the Pt and Fe metals and the SiO 2 support for the Pt−Fe/SiO 2 catalyst. On the supported iron-containing catalysts, the Fe 3+ species were highly dispersed on the SiO 2 supported before reduction. No Fe 0 and Fe 2+ in octahedral vacancy were found in the reduction of SiO 2 supported iron-containing catalysts. Addition of Pt to the Fe/SiO 2 catalyst could promote the reduction of the iron species.

Abstract:Traditional catalytic reaction kinetics studies focus on macroscopic variables and properties (such as temperature and concentration sensitivity) and can be used to guide the optimal design of industrial reactors, but pay little attention to the effects of catalyst microscale structures and properties. It cannot therefore be used to guide the optimal design of the catalyst. This review mainly discusses the development and application of multifaceted kinetics analysis method, which can discriminate the dominant active sites of supported metal catalysts, and the possibility to use the activation entropy (ΔS0*) as an experimentally measurable descriptor of catalytic reaction rate, which can be fine-tuned by tailoring the electronic properties of supported metal nanoparticles in terms of the surface chemistry and properties of carbon supports. It can extend the application of the kinetics analysis from the reactor design to the catalyst design.

Abstract:The reduction properties of Fe2O3/ZrO2catalysts with various Fe2O3loading and the interactions between iron oxide and zirconia have been studied by using temperature-programmed reduction combined within situMössbauer spectroscopy. This is shown that the intermediates formed during reduction depend strongly not only on the reduction temperature but also on the iron loading. Several iron species such as bulk phase α-Fe2O3, small α-Fe2O3particles, and surface iron oxide species are found in the zirconia supported iron oxide catalysts. Reduction of the small α-Fe2O3particles is easier than that of the bulk phase α-Fe2O3. In contrast, the surface iron oxide species are much more difficult to reduce because of their strong interactions with the support. The phenomena of partial oxidation of Fe2+cations and Fe3O4to Fe3+cations in the reduction processes are observed.

Abstract:For heterogeneous catalysis, the metal catalysts supported on reducible metal oxides, especially CeO2 and TiO2, have long been a research focus because of their excellent catalytic performance in a variety of catalytic reactions. Detailed understanding of the promotion effect of reducible metal oxides on catalytic reactions is beneficial to the rational design of new catalysts. The important catalytic roles of reducible metal oxides are attributed to their intimate interactions with the supported metals (e.g., strong metal-support interaction, electronic metal-support interaction) and unique support structures (e.g., oxygen vacancy, reversible valence change, surface hydroxyl). However, the structures of the catalysts and reaction mechanisms are strongly affected by environmental conditions. For this reason, in situ/operando spectroscopy studies under working conditions are necessary to obtain accurate information about the structure-activity relationship. In this review, the recent applications of the in situ/operando spectroscopy methodology on metal catalysts with reducible metal oxides as supports are summarized.

De-reducibility Mechanism of Titanium on Maghemite Catalysts for the SCR Reaction: an in Situ DRIFTS and Quantitative Kinetics Study

Abstract:An environmental benign TiO2 doped maghemite catalyst, the gamma-Fe95Ti5, was prepared via the precipitation microwave pyrolysis method for the NOx removal. The gamma-Fe95Ti5 exhibited significantly higher catalytic activity and better N-2 selectivity than the pure maghemite, gamma-Fe100Ti0. The SCR active window of the catalyst is broadened and the resistances to H2O and SO2 are also preserved. Ti4+ cations could enter the lattice of y-Fe100Ti0, forming the partial solid solution on the catalyst surface, as gamma-Fe2-zeta Ti zeta O3+xi. This structure improves the quantity and stability of both Lewis and Bronsted acid sites compared with the gamma-Fe100Ti0. Meanwhile, the dopant cations suppress the reduction of Fe3+ and the percentage of active oxygen on the catalyst surface. These could suppress the N2O formation from NH3 oxidation and NOx reduction. By the combination of both DRIFTS and kinetic methods, the rate constants of the gamma-Fe95Ti5 catalyst via the Eley-Rideal and Langmuir-Hinshelwood mechanisms increase simultaneously, while the rate constant via the catalytic oxidation of NH3 decreases compared with the gamma-Fe100Ti0.

Abstract:The technique of microcalorimetric adsorption and its application for measurements of surface acidity and basicity have been reviewed. Specifically, the strength and number of surface acid and base sites can be quantitatively titrated by the microcalorimetric adsorption of NH 3 and CO 2 as probe molecules. In addition, in situ infrared spectroscopy provides the information about the nature of the surface acid and base sites. For example, Lewis acid and base sites on metal oxides are coordinatively unsaturated metal cations and oxygen anions, respectively, while Brnsted acid and base sites are the hydroxyl groups on the surface. In addition, the strengths of surface acidity and basicity as defined by the adsorption heat of NH 3 and CO 2 can be correlated with Sanderson electronegativity of the metal oxides, and the interactions of basic probe molecules with acidic surface may be described by Drago parameters. Thus, strong surface acidity can be obtained by preparing the surface possessing coordinatively unsaturated metal cations with high electronegativity while strong surface basicity may be obtained by preparing the surface possessing coordinatively unsaturated oxygen anions associated with metal cations with low electronegativity.

Abstract:Iron is considered as attractive energy carrier in a carbon-free circular energy economy. The reduction of iron oxide is crucial for its applica-tion as a metal fuel as it determines the efficiency of the cycle. Temperature programmed reduction of α-Fe2O3 was monitored by complementary X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and diffraction (XRD) to obtain the phase composition with high time resolution. Synchrotron Mössbauer spectroscopy (SMS) was additionally employed due to its high sensitivity to the different iron species. Theoretical calculations of surface and bulk adsorption processes were performed to establish the potential reaction pathways and the corresponding energy barriers. A kinetic particle model was then developed to bridge the experimental data and theoretical calculations, which reproduced the reduction onset and behavior. The reduction process was found to be strongly dependent on the heating rate in terms of the reduction window and the observed intermediate species. We propose that a core-shell mechanism determines the reaction by forming an iron layer which subsequently hinders diffusion of water out of the porous particles leading to some unreduced FeO at high temperature. This study demonstrates the need for complementary methods for describing complex heterogeneous systems and overcoming the chemical sensitivity limitations of any single method.
Catalyst characterization and surface oxygen properties of Ag-Fe mixed oxide catalysts

Abstract:Ag-Fe mixed oxides catalysts with different Ag/Fe ratio are prepared by co-precipitation method. The catalysts have been characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD). XRD shows that over all the catalysts exist as the sigma -AgFeO2 phase. The surface oxygen species of catalysts and the reduction properties of catalysts have been investigated by temperature-programmed decomposition (TPD) and reduction (TPR). It has been found that only one peak is observed on O-2-TPD profiles which is attributed to lattice oxygen from finely dispersed sigma -AgFeO2 phases. Three reducible peaks (alpha, beta,gamma) have been observed on H-2-TPR profiles. The alpha peak (around 180-220 degreesC) is attributed to the reduction of the small phase of sigma -AgFeO2, beta peak (around 250-280 degreesC) is attributed to the reduction of the large phase of sigma -AgFeO2, and the gamma peak is attributed to the reduction of Fe2O3 species. The results indicate that the Ag/Fe (1:1) catalyst exhibits highest oxidation activity in CO oxidation. It has been found that the sigma -AgFeO2 phase is the active site which makes main contribution in CO oxidation reaction.
