Abstract:SmMn2O5 mullite has recently been reported to be a promising alternative to traditional Pt-based catalysts for environmental and energy applications. By performing density functional theory calculations, we have systematically investigated lattice oxygen reactivity and oxygen adsorption/dissociation/migration behaviors on low-index surfaces of SmMn2O5 mullite with different terminations. On the basis of the oxygen chemistry and thermodynamic stability of different facets, we conclude that (100)(3+), (010)(4+), and (001)(4+) are reactive toward NO oxidation via either the Mars van Krevelen (Mid() or Eley-Rideal (ER) mechanism. Concrete NO -> NO2 reaction paths on these candidate mechanisms have also been calculated. Both the (010)(4+) and (001)(4+) surfaces presented desirable activities. Bridge MnO sites on (010)(4+) surface are identified to be the most active for NO oxidation through the ER mechanism with the lowest barrier of similar to 0.38 eV. We have also identified that on all active sites considered in the current study, the rate-determining step in NO -> NO2 oxidation reaction is the NO2 desorption. Our study gives an insight into the mechanisms of NO oxidation on SmMn2O5 mullite at the atomic level and can be used to guide further improvement of its catalytic performance.
Exploring the dynamic evolution of lattice oxygen on exsolved-Mn2O3@SmMn2O5 interfaces for NO Oxidation

Abstract:Lattice oxygen in metal oxides plays an important role in the reaction of diesel oxidation catalysts, but the atomic-level understanding of structural evolution during the catalytic process remains elusive. Here, we develop a Mn2O3/SmMn2O5 catalyst using a non-stoichiometric exsolution method to explore the roles of lattice oxygen in NO oxidation. The enhanced covalency of Mn-O bond and increased electron density at Mn3+ sites, induced by the interface between exsolved Mn2O3 and mullite, lead to the formation of highly active lattice oxygen adjacent to Mn3+ sites. Near-ambient pressure X-ray photoelectron and absorption spectroscopies show that the activated lattice oxygen enables reversible changes in Mn valence states and Mn-O bond covalency during redox cycles, reducing energy barriers for NO oxidation and promoting NO2 desorption via the cooperative Mars-van Krevelen mechanism. Therefore, the Mn2O3/SmMn2O5 exhibits higher NO oxidation activity and better resistance to hydrothermal aging compared to a commercial Pt/Al2O3 catalyst.
Insights into the Reactive and Deactivation Mechanisms of Manganese Oxides for Ozone Elimination: The Roles of Surface Oxygen Species

Abstract:Manganese oxides with varied Mn valance states but identical morphologies were synthesized via a facile thermal treatment of γ-MnOOH. Also, their catalytic performance on ozone decomposition was investigated following the order of Mn3O4 < Mn2O3 < MnO2 < MnO2-H-200. In combination with X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), H2-temperature-programmed reduction (TPR), O2-temperature-programmed desorption (TPD), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) characterization, it was deduced that the superior O3 decomposition capacity for MnO2-H-200 was strongly associated with abundant oxygen vacancies on its surface. Among Mn3O4, Mn2O3, and MnO2, the difference in O3 decomposition efficiency was dependent on the divergent nature of oxygen vacancy. Density functional theory (DFT) calculation revealed that Mn3O4 and MnO2 possessed lower formation energy of oxygen vacancy, while MnO2 had the minimum desorption energy of peroxide species (O2*). It was deduced that the promotion of the O3 decomposition capability was attributed to the easier O2* desorption. Insights into the deactivation mechanism for MnO2-H-200 further validated the assumptions. As the reaction proceeded, adsorbed oxygen species accumulated on the catalyst surface, and a portion of them were transformed to lattice oxygen. Abstract:This study employed spin-polarized density functional theory and investigated the removal of surface oxygen on Fe5C2(100) surfaces substituted with first-row transition metals. It was observed that the substituted metals with lower electronegativity, such as Cr and Mn, could hinder the removal of surface oxygen. Conversely, substituted metals with higher electronegativity, such as Co, Ni, and Cu, facilitates the removal of surface oxygen. The results revealed a clear correlation between the energy barrier for oxygen removal and the electronegativity of substituted metals, which provides a straightforward and efficient approach to estimate the energy barrier for oxygen removal on iron carbide surfaces. Furthermore, the study demonstrated that the oxygen removal pathway is dependent on the electronegativity of substituted metals. For Cr and Mn substituted surfaces (low electronegativity), the oxygen removal via CO2 pathway is preferable both in thermodynamics and kinetics, while for Cu substituted surfaces (high electronegativity), the hydrogenation of O to H2O is more favorable. These findings reveal the significance of electronic promoters in catalyst design.

Abstract:MnOx-CeO2 composite catalysts were prepared by a coprecipitation method and tested for formaldehyde (HCHO) and carbon monoxide (CO) oxidation. X-ray photon spectroscopy (XPS) results indicated that the average oxidation state of surface Mn species in CeMn composite catalyst was higher compared to the pure MnOx. The enhancement of reactivity for HCHO oxidation was due to the activation of the lattice oxygen species in MnOx by the addition of CeO2, which was confirmed by the H2 temperature programmed reduction (H2-TPR) results. The remarkable enhancement of reactivity for CO oxidation by the addition of CeO2 was due to the active oxygen species generated on the CeO2 surface which directly participated in the reaction.

Abstract:α-Fe3O3-supported molybdenum catalysts were prepared by heating a mixture of MoO3and α-Fe2O3. XRD, XPS, LRS, FT–IR, and Mössbauer spectroscopy were used to study the interactions between MoO3and α-Fe2O3. At the temperature of 693 K, the dispersion capacity of MoO3on α-Fe2O3determined by XRD and XPS is 0.80 mmol MoO3/100 m2α-Fe2O3, i.e., 4.8 Mo6+/nm2. LRS and FT–IR results show that at low MoO3loading (1.8 Mo6+/nm2), Mo6+cations are located in the tetrahedral sites of the α-Fe2O3surface. The occcupation of octahedral surface vacant sites increases with the MoO3loading. Considering the fact that each Mo6+is accompanied by 3O2−anions and that α-Fe2O3has a hexagonal structure, almost all the incorporated Mo6+on the surface are in octahedral coordination environment. Based on the assumptions that the (001) plane of α-Fe2O3is preferentially exposed on the surface and that all the usable surface vacant sites have been occupied, the formation of a close-packed layer on the α-Fe2O3surface by the O2−anions linked with the incorporated Mo6+can be expected, which is in good agreement with the result predicted by the incorporation model proposed previously. A relationship between the residual bulk MoO3and the calcination time shows that Mo6+ions occupy the surface vacant sites of α-Fe2O3in two stages. The first stage may correspond to the migration of Mo6+cations from the bulk MoO3to the tetrahedral surface vacant sites on the surface. The second stage may correspond to the migration of Mo6+from the bulk MoO3into the octahedral unoccupied vacant sites. Mössbauer spectroscopy and XRD results indicate that a new phase, Fe2(MoO4)3, is formed when the sample containing 10.0 Mo6+/nm2α-Fe2O3was calcined at 743 K, suggesting that the calcination temperature is important to the interaction extent between MoO3and α-Fe2O3.
Stable and Active Oxidation Catalysis by Cooperative Lattice Oxygen Redox on SmMn2O5 Mullite Surface.

Abstract:The correlation between lattice oxygen (O) binding energy and O oxidation activity imposes a fundamental limit in developing oxide catalysts, simultaneously meeting the stringent thermal stability and catalytic activity standards for complete oxidation reactions under harsh conditions. Typically, strong O binding indicates a stable surface structure, but low O oxidation activity, and vice versa. Using nitric oxide (NO) catalytic oxidation as a model reaction, we demonstrate that this conflicting correlation can be avoided by cooperative lattice oxygen redox on SmMn2O5 mullite oxides, leading to stable and active oxide surface structures. The strongly bound neighboring lattice oxygen pair cooperates in NO oxidation to form bridging nitrate (NO3-) intermediates, which can facilely transform into monodentate NO3- by a concerted rotation with simultaneous O2 adsorption onto the resulting oxygen vacancy. Subsequently, monodentate NO3- species decompose to NO2 to restore one of the lattice oxygen atoms that act as a reversible redox center, and the vacancy can easily activate O2 to replenish the consumed one. This discovery not only provides insights into the cooperative reaction mechanism but also aids the design of oxidation catalysts with the strong O binding region, offering strong activation of O2, high O activity, and high thermal stability in harsh conditions.

Abstract:In-situ Mössbauer spectroscopy, as well as x-ray diffraction and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy has been used to study the Fe−Mo oxide catalysts with the ratio of Fe/Mo=0.29 and 0.67. The results showed that Fe2(MoO4)3 in the catalysts was reduced to β-FeMoO4 during the oxidation of toluene, and the β-FeMoO4 was reoxidized to Fe2(MoO4)3 by the air. The catalyst with the ratio of Fe/Mo=0.29, which was easier to be reduced to β-FeMoO4, showed higher catalytic activity. The different effects of Fe and Mo in the catalysts are discussed.

Abstract:The interactions of NH3, NOx and O2 with two Fe3O4 (111) surfaces named Fetet- and Feoct-tet-terminated, respectively, were investigated by first principle calculation. The results indicated that the Feoct-tet-terminated surface had a stronger effect on the adsorption and activation of these small molecules overall. Specifically, NH3, NO and O2 tend to be stably adsorbed on the octahedral Fe site on the Feoct-tet-terminated surface. The energy released by O2 adsorption is the most among them, and it is easy to form abundant surface adsorbed oxygen on the catalyst surface, which further co-adsorb or combine with NO to form nitrate and nitrite species with various coordination structures. The chelated and bridged bidentate-coordinated nitrate species with the highest adsorption energies are important reaction intermediates in NH3 selective catalytic reduction (NH3-SCR). In addition, due to the horizontal adsorption configuration, NH3 is significantly affected by the nearest lattice oxygen, which makes the oxidative dehydrogenation reaction more likely to occur, although the adsorption energy of NH3 on Feoct-tet-terminated surface is relatively lower. These results provide a basis for understanding the interactions of NH3, NOx and O2 on Fe3O4 (111) surfaces in NH3-SCR reaction.

Abstract:MnOx/ZrO2 catalysts were characterized by XRD, TPD and TPR. The results indicated that MnOx species on ZrO2 were mainly MnO2 and Mn2O3. Reduction-oxidation treatment raised the dispersion of MnOx species on ZrO2. The interaction between MnOx and ZrO2 promoted the decomposition of MnO2, and restrained the decomposition of Mn2O3. The highly-dispersed or little crystallite MnOx was the predominant contributor in oxidation activity for CO.
Origin of the Superior Activity of Surface Doped SmMn2O5 Mullites for NO Oxidation: A First-Principles Based Microkinetic Study

Abstract:Using first-principles based microkinetic analysis, we conduct a comprehensive investigation on the NO oxidation process on SmMn2O5 mullite's active surface under experimentally relevant conditions. The influencing factor for NO oxidation activity is identified and Mars-van Krevelen (MvK) and Eley-Rideal (ER) mechanisms are found to contribute to the high activity of pristine SmMn2O5 mullites in high and low temperature regions, respectively. We further study the activity of surface (Ba/Sr/La) doped SmMn2O5. It is found that surface doping of Ba primarily destabilizes the nitrite (NO*) species to promote NO oxidation performance via MvK mechanism. Due to the stronger ability of O-2 (O*(2)) dissociation along the ER route, Sr and La doped mullites are predicted to have greatly enhanced reaction activity in a wide temperature region. Our study gives insight into the NO oxidation ability of pristine and surface doped SmMn2O5 that are beneficial for further optimization of mullite based catalyst performance. (C) 2018 Elsevier Inc. Surface Interactions of MoO3/ Α-Fe2o3 System

Abstract:α-Fe 2 O 3 -supported molybdena catalysts have been prepared by heating a mixture of MoO 3 and α-Fe 2 O 3 . XRD, XPS, LRS, TG-DTA and Mössbauer spectroscopy were used to characterize the interactions between MoO 3 and α-Fe 2 O 3 . The dispersion capacity of MoO 3 on the surface of α-Fe 2 O 3 determined by XRD and XPS was 0.8 mmol/100m 2 α-Fe 2 O 3 in the samples calcined at 420°C. For the sample with low MoO 3 loading, LRS and FT-IR results showed that Mo 6+ ions were located in the tetrahedral vacant sites on the surface of α-Fe 2 O 3 , signed as Mo-I. The amount of Mo-II species, formed by Mo 6+ ions incorporated into the octahedral vacant sites, increased with the MoO 3 loading. Based on the assumption that the (001) plane of α-Fe 2 O 3 is preferentially exposed, almost all the Mo 6+ ions of the dispersed molybdena species existed at the surface octahedral sites for the sample with MoO 3 loading close or beyond the dispersion capacity, and formed the Mo-II species. In this case, the capping O 2− ions linking with the incorporated Mo 6+ ions formed a surface epitaxial structure, which was in good agreement with the results predicted by the incorporation model proposed previously. XRD and Mössbauer spectroscopy of the MoO 3 / α-Fe 2 O 3 samples calcined at different temperatures showed that the calcination temperature could strongly influence the interaction extent: (i) at 420°C, MoO 3 dispersed on the surface of α-Fe 2 O 3 and formed surface Mo species; (ii) at 500°C, MoO 3 reacted with the bulk of α-Fe 2 O 3 and formed Fe 2 (MoO 4 ) 3 compound.
Catalyst characterization and surface oxygen properties of Ag-Fe mixed oxide catalysts

Abstract:Ag-Fe mixed oxides catalysts with different Ag/Fe ratio are prepared by co-precipitation method. The catalysts have been characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD). XRD shows that over all the catalysts exist as the sigma -AgFeO2 phase. The surface oxygen species of catalysts and the reduction properties of catalysts have been investigated by temperature-programmed decomposition (TPD) and reduction (TPR). It has been found that only one peak is observed on O-2-TPD profiles which is attributed to lattice oxygen from finely dispersed sigma -AgFeO2 phases. Three reducible peaks (alpha, beta,gamma) have been observed on H-2-TPR profiles. The alpha peak (around 180-220 degreesC) is attributed to the reduction of the small phase of sigma -AgFeO2, beta peak (around 250-280 degreesC) is attributed to the reduction of the large phase of sigma -AgFeO2, and the gamma peak is attributed to the reduction of Fe2O3 species. The results indicate that the Ag/Fe (1:1) catalyst exhibits highest oxidation activity in CO oxidation. It has been found that the sigma -AgFeO2 phase is the active site which makes main contribution in CO oxidation reaction.
Insights into the Sm/Zr Co-Doping Effects on N2 Selectivity and SO2 Resistance of a MnOx-TiO2 Catalyst for the NH3-SCR Reaction

Abstract:A series of Sm- and/or Zr-doped MnOx-TiO2 catalysts were prepared, and the catalysts exhibited better N-2 selectivity and SO2 resistance than the undoped MnOx-TiO2 catalyst for the selective catalytic reduction of NO by NH3 (NH3-SCR). The reasons for the good N-2 selectivity and SO2D resistance of the catalysts were proposed. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) combined with density functional theory (DFT) calculations suggested that electron transfer between the manganese and samarium species by Mn4+ + Sm2+ <-> Mn3+ + Sm3+ redox cycles occurred in the Sm-containing catalysts. Furthermore, electron transfer from Sm2+ to Mn4+ suppressed electron transfer from NH3 to Mn4+, inhibiting the formation of NH2 or NH. Thus, the pathway for NH generation was removed, and the reaction of 2NH + 4NO -> 3N(2)O + H2O was prevented. Consequently, the N-2 selectivity of the NH3-SCR reaction was enhanced. In situ diffused reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (in situ DRIFTS) combined with thermogravimetry, differential scanning calorimetry and mass spectrometry (TG-DSC-MS) results revealed that the deposition rate of sulfate species decreases after Sm doping, which was also attributed to the suppressed electron transfer from SO2 to Mn4+, i.e., the oxidation of SO2 to SO3. Thus, the catalysts exhibited better SO2 resistance.
Surface Reconstruction of a Mullite-Type Catalyst via Selective Dissolution for NO Oxidation

Abstract:We present a facile selective dissolution method for the surface modification of SmMn2O5 mullite (SMO) to increase the exposed sites for NO oxidation on the premise of excellent thermal stability. Surface Sm cations are partially removed during the treatment (SMO-H), leading to the exposure of B-site cations with higher electronegativity and oxygen vacancies. Under laboratory-simulated diesel combustion conditions, the SMO-H exhibits higher NO oxidation activity than the SMO and is comparable to that of the Pt/Al catalyst under a gas hourly space velocity (GHSV) of 120 000 mL g–1 h–1. In addition, the SMO-H possesses good thermal and steam stability during a 50 h test at 300 °C. X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy results reveal that the SMO-H presents more Mn4+O6 octahedral groups and oxygen vacancies than the SMO. In situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (DRIFTS), near-ambient pressure X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (NAP-XPS), and density functional theory (DFT) calculations show that the valence of surface Mn decreased after NO capture up to 300 °C and fulfilled the adsorption procedure as nitrite and/or nitrate species when O2 is involved in the flue gas. The results indicate that Mn-terminated surface rather than Sm-terminated one is the major adsorption site for NO.

Abstract:Fourier transform infrared(FT-IR) emission spectroscopic technique has been established shed to study metal oxide catalysts. An in situ infrared emission cell was specially de signed to treat sample in vacuo or in various gases at a wide temperature range(r. t.-700 degrees C). Infrared emission spectrum of MoO3 was presented and the results demonstrated that FT-IR emission spectroscopy is a sensitive method to detect vibrational information of metal oxide catalysts The experimental conditions including sample preparation, effects of temperature and sample thickness on the infrared emission spectrum were detailed. It was found that the spectrum was severely disordered when the sample thickness of MoO3 was beyond 1.00mg.cm(2) and the more intensive emission bands were detected at higher temperatures infrared emission spectra recorded in the course of H-2 reduction of MoO3 showed that surface linkage Mo-O-Mo species giving the band at 880 cm(-1) is more easily reduced comparing to the terminal Mo = O species giving the band at 990 cm(-1), vice versa, the Mo = O species are preferentially formed than the Mo-O-Mo species during the reoxidation of the partially reduced MoO8.

Abstract:Tuning reactive oxygen species in peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation by the structure of catalysts has been extensively studied. But in photocatalysis, the photothermal effect is lack of attention on the alteration of reactive species produced by PMS activation. In this work, ZnFe2O4/C photocatalyst with oxygen vacancy (ZFOv/ C) was synthesized via the calcination of bimetallic Zn/Fe-metal-organic framework. The photocatalytic per-formance of the catalyst had been studied under several conditions, and the experimental results demonstrated that the photocatalytic reaction rate constant of ZFOv/C photocatalyst without temperature control was 21.3 % higher than that under temperature control. Reactive species quenching experiments and electron paramagnetic resonance indicated that 1O2 and h+ are the primary reactive species without temperature control, while only 1O2 are the dominant reactive species under temperature control conditions. The possible activation site was speculated by in-situ Raman spectroscopy, XPS spectra and cycling experiment. This paper analyzes the reasons for photocatalysis to improve the degradation rate of pollutant from the perspective of the change of reactive species generated by photothermal effect on PMS activation, which may open up opportunities to explore the maximum utilization of sunlight in PMS activation.

Abstract:Understanding the structure-activity relationship of Mn-based oxide catalysts is of great importance for the rational development of highly performance catalysts for VOCs catalytic oxidation. However, the knowledge of the electronic structure-catalytic oxidation activity relationship over Mn-based oxide catalysts is still limited. Herein, we investigated the typical Mn x O y (Mn 3 O 4 , MnO 2 , and Mn 2 O 3 ) with different valence electronic structures by using various characterizations and DFT calculations. The MnO 2 exhibits superior intrinsic activities ( R S , 1.14×10 −9 mol·m −2 ·s −1 ) when compared with Mn 3 O 4 (0.54×10 −9 mol·m −2 ·s −1 ) and Mn 2 O 3 (0.45×10 −9 mol·m −2 ·s −1 ) for toluene catalytic oxidation. The solid experimental and DFT calculation results show that the d -band center of Mn determines the intrinsic activity. The superior catalytic oxidation activity of MnO 2 can be attributed to its higher d -band center (-1.03 eV) in comparison with that of Mn 3 O 4 (-1.25 eV) and Mn 2 O 3 (-1.59 eV). The higher d -band center can weaken the surface Mn-O bonds strength ( k = 290.9 N/m) and strengthen the gaseous O 2 adsorption simultaneously, then enhancing the mobility of surface lattice oxygen and the amount of adsorbed oxygen species. This work firstly reveals the intrinsic relationship between catalytic oxidation activity and d electronic structure over Mn-based oxide catalysts and provides knowledge that will advance the design of high-performance catalysts for catalytic oxidation.

Abstract:Improving the catalyst stabilities under different conditions (water vapor, SO2, both water vapor and SO2) is important for industrial applications regarding catalytic NO deep oxidation by ozone. In this paper, Ce–Mn/SA and Fe–Mn/SA catalysts were selected to investigate the stabilities. The results showed that the Ce–Mn/SA exhibited excellent stability and resistance to SO2, while the Fe–Mn/SA only displayed excellent stability without moisture and SO2. Almost a 50% drop in efficiency was observed after deactivation by water vapor and water vapor together with SO2 for the two catalysts. The Fe–Mn/SA displayed inferior resistance to SO2. After stability testing with water vapor, the surface area, pore volume, and average pore diameter all decreased. The low adsorption energy of the H2O molecule resulted in the superior adsorption of water vapor, which occupied large amounts of active sites. XPS results showed that the ratio of Mn4+ and chemisorbed oxygen decreased after deactivation. Mn4+ favors NO oxidation, while Mn3+ is favorable for ozone decomposition. Therefore, better performance in NO deep oxidation by ozone requires relative balance distribution between Mn4+ and Mn3+. Interestingly, the TPD results showed that the NO desorption peak was unaffected and even increased a lot after water vapor stability testing. This could be attributed to the nitrates, formed by the N2O5 and H2O in liquid phase, that were adsorbed on the catalyst surface prior to NO, which contributes to a bigger NO desorption peak with lower NO adsorption ability. The trace of sulfate formed after SO2 stability testing was verified from TPD and TGA results, but it was not observed from the FTIR spectra, indicating the sulfate species formed during the ozonation process may not exist on the catalyst surface.
