Abstract:ZSM-5 has emerged as a promising catalyst for iso-butane catalytic cracking due to its unique pore structures and abundant acid sites. And the optimization of catalytic performance has attracted more and more attention. Herein, a series of Pt and Mn-embedded Pt-xMn@HZSM-5 catalysts with different Mn complexes were successfully synthesized via the one-pot hydrothermal method (x refers to the Mn/Pt ratio). The ligand effects of both ethylenediamine and ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid disodium salt on the nature of target samples in terms of crystallinity, porosity, morphology, metal state, and acidity, were investigated in detail. It has been demonstrated that ethylenediamine served as a ligand enabled Pt-xMn@HZSM-5 more metal nanoparticles and acid sites, thereby delivering improved catalytic performance and high yields of ethylene, propylene and BTX (benzene, toluene, and xylene) for iso-butane catalytic cracking.
Influence of Calcination Temperature and Reaction Atmosphere on the Catalytic Properties of Pt-Sn/SAPO-34 for Propane Dehydrogenation

Abstract:Pt-Sn/SAPO-34 catalyst samples were prepared at different calcination temperatures. The catalysts were characterized by X-ray diffraction, N-2 adsorption, X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy, O-2-pulse coke content measurement, temperature-programmed reduction with hydrogen, and transmission electron microscopy. The activity was measured in a microreactor. The effect of calcination temperature and reaction atmosphere on the catalytic properties of Pt-Sn/SAPO-34 for propane dehydrogenation to propylene was investigated. The catalyst prepared at the calcination temperature of 500 degrees C showed the best performance, while the catalysts prepared above and below the 500 degrees C calcination temperature showed undesirable surface changes such as Pt active site degradation, Pt sintering, loss of Sn, etc. At the reaction temperature of 595 degrees C, Pt-Sn/SAPO-34 was stable and maintained surface metallic properties.

Abstract:The structure and catalytic properties of PtSn catalyst supported on Al2O3-modified SBA-15 (Al2O3/SBA-15) have been studied by using various experimental techniques combined with propane dehydrogenation tests. It has been shown that the PtSn/Al2O3/SBA-15 catalyst exhibits higher activity than PtSn/SBA-15 catalyst and higher stability than conventional PtSn/γ-Al2O3 catalyst for propane dehydrogenation. The characterization results of the catalysts have revealed that on pure SBA-15 tin is easier to be reduced to metallic state due to weak interaction of Sn species with SBA-15 support, resulting in lower H2 uptake and thus lower catalytic activity of PtSn/SBA-15. Modifying the internal pores of SBA-15 by alumina can enhance the interaction between Sn and Al2O3/SBA-15 support, resulting in the increase of catalytic activity for propane dehydrogenation. Moreover, the PtSn/Al2O3/SBA-15 catalyst has larger bare fraction of Pt surface after coke deposition, leading to higher catalytic stability than the PtSn/γ-Al2O3 catalyst.
Studies of the Roles of Sn or Fe on Γ-Al 2 O 3 -Supported Pt Catalysts by CO Adsorption Microcalorimetry and Dehydrogenation Reaction of C 4 Alkanes

Abstract:CO adsorption microcalorimetry was employed in the study of γ-Al2O3-supported Pt, Pt-Sn and Pt-Fe catalysts. The results indicated that the initial differential heat of CO adsorption of the Pt/γ-Al2O3 catalyst was 125 kJ/mol. As CO coverage increased, the differential heat of adsorption decreased. At higher coverages, the differential heat of adsorption decreased significantly. 60% of the differential heat of CO adsorption on the Pt/γ-N2O3 catalyst was higher than 100 kJ/mol. No significant effect on the initial differential heat was found after adding Sn and Fe to the Pt/γ-Al2O3 catalyst. The amount of strong CO adsorption sites decreased, while the portion of CO adsorption sites with differential heat of 60–110 kJ/mol increased after increasing the Sn or Fe content. This indicates that the surface adsorption energy was changed by adding Sn or Fe to Pt/γ-N2O3. The distribution of differential heat of CO adsorption on the Pt-Sn(C)/γ-Al2O3 catalyst was broad and homogeneous. Comparison of the dehydrogenation performance of C4 alkanes with the number of CO adsorption sites with differential heat of 60–110 kJ/mol showed a good correlation. These results indicate that the surface Pt centers with differential heats of 60–110 kJ/mol for CO adsorption possess superior activity for the dehydrogenation of alkanes.

Abstract:In this work, we improved the conventional sequential impregnation synthetic method for preparing Pt–Sn/SiO 2 catalysts for propane dehydrogenation. Three different synthesis procedures (Pt calcination (PC), co-calcination (CC) and direct reduction (DR)) were performed and examined for catalytic dehydrogenation of propane. The results shows that the synthesis procedures had a notable influence on the activities of the supported Pt–Sn bimetallic catalysts. Co-calcination method mainly produces Pt 1 Sn 1 alloy nanoparticles over Pt–Sn/SiO 2 _CC, which was totally inactive in propane dehydrogenation. Pt calcination resulted in the coexistence of Pt 0.84 Sn 0.16 , Pt 3 Sn 1 , Pt 1 Sn 1 on SiO 2 . Pt–Sn/SiO 2 _PC exhibited the medium activity. Direct reduction caused the formation of Pt 3 Sn alloy nanoparticle. Pt–Sn/SiO 2 _DR displayed the best catalytic performances among the studied catalysts, with 27% of propane conversion and 99% of selectivity towards propylene. These results in the present work indicated that the beneficial role of Sn requires the suitable catalyst preparation procedures. Direct reduction of Pt–Sn/SiO 2 as prepared can afford more homogenous active Pt 3 Sn 1 alloy on Pt–Sn/SiO 2 _DR. The procedure is simple in operation and much suitable for industrially catalyst preparation. Pt x Sn y (x/y ≥ 3) with face-centered cubic structure are much active than Pt 1 Sn 1 alloy with hexagonal structure.

Abstract:The spinel supports with different magnesium-zinc-aluminum ratios were prepared by co-precipitation method. Then the 0.5%Pt-Sn/γ-Al2O3, 0.5%Pt-Sn/MgZnAl4, 0.5%Pt-Sn/Mg2ZnAl6 and 0.5%Pt-Sn/MgZn2Al6 catalysts were prepared by incipient wetness impregnation method and characterized by N2 adsorption-desorption, XRD, NH3-TPD and Inductively Coupled Plasma (ICP). The effects of the spinels supports with different magnesium-zinc-aluminum ratios on the catalytic performance of catalysts in dehydrogenation of isobutane were investigated. The results of N2 adsorption-desorption indicate that the spinel supports provide smaller specific surface area and larger pore size distribution than γ-Al2O3, and the results of NH3-TPD indicate that the spinel supports exhibit lower acidity than γ-Al2O3. The activity test shows that 0.5%Pt-Sn/MgZnAl4 catalyst exhibit the best activity and selectivity with an initial conversion of isobutane of 52.09%and a selectivity to isobutene of 98.56%.

Abstract:γ-Al 2 O 3 supported Pt-containing catalysts have been investigated by Isobutane dehydrogenation and XAFS analyses. The results indicated that Pt species is highly dispersed on the γ-Al 2 O 3 support for the γ-Al 2 O 3 supported Pt-containing catalysts after reduction. Pt is in amorphous metallic state, and no alloy of Pt-Sn or Pt-Fe was formed after reduction for the Pt-Sn/γ-Al 2 O 3 and Pt-Fe/γ-Al 2 O 3 catalysts. Pt anchored γ-Al 2 O 3 support via promoter-SnO or FeO, which resulted in an enhanced dehydrogenation performance for the both catalysts.

Abstract:Identification of the most efficient configuration of subnanometer bimetallic clusters is of great importance for the rational design of bimetallic catalysts but remains challenging due to the difficulty to construct the appropriate model systems. Here, we have accommodated subnanometer Pt/Sn sites, spanning from metal single atoms to bimetallic clusters in the 10MR sinusoidal channels of pure-silica MFI-type zeolite, which are employed as model catalysts to identify the optimal configuration of subnanometer PtSn sites for catalyzing an alkane dehydrogenation reaction. According to the electron microscopy and spectroscopy characterization results, the structural configuration of the bimetallic PtSn species in MFI zeolite varies with the Pt loading, which influences their catalytic performances for the propane dehydrogenation reaction. Furthermore, theoretical calculations are performed to understand the structural features of various PtSn species and their catalytic behavior for propane dehydrogenation, providing insights into the structure–reactivity relationships of subnanometer PtSn catalysts confined in zeolite structures.

Enhanced Stability and Selectivity in Pt@MFI Catalysts for n-Butane Dehydrogenation: The Crucial Role of Sn Promoter

Abstract:The dehydrogenation of n-butane to butenes is a crucial process for producing valuable petrochemical intermediates. This study explores the role of oxyphilic metal promoters (Sn, Zn, and Ga) in enhancing the performance and stability of Pt@MFI catalysts for n-butane dehydrogenation. The presence of Sn in the catalyst inhibits the agglomeration of Pt clusters, maintaining their subnanometric particle size. PtSn@MFI exhibits superior stability and selectivity for butenes while suppressing cracking reactions, with selectivity for C1–C3 products as low as 2.1% at 550 °C compared to over 30.5% for Pt@MFI. Using a combination of high-angle annular dark-field scanning transmission electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, and Raman spectroscopy, we examined the structural and electronic properties of the catalysts. Our findings reveal that Zn tends to consume hydroxyl groups and substitute framework sites, and Ga induces more defective sites in the zeolite structure. In contrast, the interaction between SnOx and the zeolite framework does not depend on reactions with hydroxyl groups. The incorporation of Sn significantly prevents Pt particle agglomeration, maintaining smaller Pt particle sizes and reducing coke formation compared to Zn and Ga promoters. Theoretical calculations showed that Sn increases the positive charge on Pt clusters, enhancing their interaction with the zeolite framework and reducing sintering, albeit with a slight increase in the energy barrier for C-H activation. These results underscore the dual benefits of Sn as a promoter, offering enhanced structural stability and reduced coke formation, thus paving the way for the rational design of more effective and durable catalysts for alkane dehydrogenation and other high-value chemical processes.

On the Role of Sn Segregation of Pt-Sn Catalysts for Propane Dehydrogenation

Abstract:Bimetallic nanoparticle catalysts attract extensive attention for relevant catalysis processes due to their flexible structures, while the structure evolution under specific conditions is ambiguous. This paper describes the structure evolution of Pt-Sn bimetallic nanoparticles for catalytic dehydrogenation, especially Sn segregation for surface recovery of a Pt-Sn alloy. An acid etching-reduction process was adopted to investigate the migration of Sn atoms after surface Sn species loss. By acid etching, Sn atoms at the surface of Pt-Sn alloy nanoparticles were removed, leaving nanoparticles with a Pt-rich shell and an unchanged Pt3Sn alloy core. Excitedly, during the following reduction process, the Pt3Sn alloy surface was recovered due to the migration of Sn atoms from the core to the surface, as confirmed by transmission electron microscopy, quasi in situ X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and density functional theory calculations. Subsequent studies on the catalyst performance for propane dehydrogenation (PDH) showed that the recoverable Pt3Sn alloy surface structure contributed to the high efficiency with 92% propene selectivity even after 5 cycles of the acid etching-reduction procedure. Hydrothermal Study of Pt–Sn-based SAPO-34 Supported Novel Catalyst Used for Selective Propane Dehydrogenation to Propylene

Abstract:Catalyst's regeneration is unavoidable part during dehydrogenation. The hydrothermal treatment influence on the performance of Pt-Sn-based SAPO-34 supported novel catalyst, used for propane dehydrogenation to propylene is investigated in this study. The catalyst shows excellent stability for mild steaming (nitrogen mixed steam), during four consecutive runs (reaction-regeneration mode). On the other hand, Pt-Sn/ZSM-5 was largely affected on mild steaming due to severe dealumination. In order to get into mechanistic understanding, severe hydrothermal treatment was carried our using pure steam. The substation loss in catalyst activity was noted. Both fresh and severe hydrotreated catalysts were characterized by XRD, XRF, O-2-pulse analysis of coke, NH3-TPD, IR spectrum of adsorbed ammonia, H-2-TPR, HR-TEM and XPS, to explore reasons for change in catalytic properties. The texture/topology is found stable. Changes in surface ensembles occur due to the loss of Sn, Al, formation of SnO species and in particular Pt sintering. This leads Pt active sites (zeolite-SnO-Pt) to inactive sites (zeolite-Pt, zeolite-PtO-Sn, Pt-Sn alloy, etc.) formation and reduced catalyst activity. TEM micrographs and H-2-chemisorption analysis confirms Pt particles agglomeration and/or sintering. About 98% catalyst activity is recovered by re-dispersed Pt using chlorination technique and credit goes to hydrothermally stable support (SAPO-34). Abstract:The objective of this work is to discuss the performance of Pt-Sn/slit-SAPO-34 novel catalyst for selective C3–C4 dehydrogenation to corresponding light olefins. The metallic contents, acidity, active metallic sites and metallic dispersion were determined using a number of physico-chemical techniques as it gives a justification for superior catalytic activity for dehydrogenation reaction. The Pt-Sn/slit-SAPO-34 catalyst was analyzed for dehydrogenation activity under optimized operating conditions; at atmospheric pressure, hydrogen to alkane (feed) molar ratio is 0.2, weight hourly space velocity 5h−1 and temperature 585°C. Around 40% light alkane conversion and above 95% of total olefins selectivity with 94% propene, 92% n-butene and about 84% iso-butene selectivity were achieved over Pt-Sn/slit-SAPO-34 novel catalyst. The catalyst was parametrically characterized over the above said operating conditions and effects of operating conditions on product distribution were discussed. The coke formation was inherently related to catalyst activity in dehydrogenation reaction and related to surface intermetallic ensemble effects; and ultimately the prominent stakeholder in catalyst deactivation. The novel catalysts also showed very good hydrothermal stability in a continuous reaction–regeneration cycles due to silica-based acidic structure of support. The results obtained over Pt-Sn/slit-SAPO-34 novel catalyst were compared with other Pt-Sn-based ZSM-5 and SAPO-34 supported catalysts of similar active metallic content under identical operating conditions.
Catalytic Properties of Ptsn/Al2o3/Mcm-41 Catalysts for Propane Dehydrogenation

Abstract:The catalytic properties of PtSn/gamma-Al2O3, PtSn/MCM-41 and PtSn/Al2O3/MCM-41 catalysts for propane dehydrogenation were studied using microreactor tests combined with X-ray diffraction (XRD), BET surface area and pore structure measurements, temperature-programmed reduction (TPR), H-2-chemisorption and thermogravimetric (TG) analysis. It was shown that the PtSn catalysts supported on Al2O3-modified MCM-41 (Al2O3/MCM-41) exhibited higher activity than the PtSn/MCM-41 catalyst, and higher catalytic stability than the conventional PtSn/gamma-Al2O3 catalyst for propane dehydrogenation. The characterization results of the catalysts revealed that on the surface of pure MCM-41, the dispersed Sn species were easier to be reduced to metallic state due to weak interaction of So with MCM-41 support, resulting in lower Pt dispersity and thus lower catalytic activity. In contrast, modifying the surface of MCM-41 by alumina could enhance the interaction between Sn and Al2O3/MCM-41 support, and increase Pt dispersity and catalytic activity for propane dehydrogenation. Moreover, the PtSn/Al2O3/MCM-41 catalysts had larger bare fraction of Pt surface after coke deposition, leading to their higher catalytic stability than the PtSn/gamma-Al2O3 catalyst. It is suggested that the unique catalytic properties of PtSn/Al2O3/MCM-41 catalysts are correlated not only to the strong interaction of Sn with Al2O3/MCM-41 support but also to the mesoporous structure of the Al2O3/MCM-41 support.
First-Principles Calculations of Propane Dehydrogenation over PtSn Catalysts

Abstract:Density functional theory calculations have been performed to investigate the effect of Sn on the catalytic activity and selectivity of Pt catalyst in propane dehydrogenation. Five models with different Sn to Pt surface molar ratios are constructed to represent the PtSn surfaces. With the increase of the Sn content, the d-band of Pt is broadened, which gives rise to a downshift in the d-band center on the PtSn surfaces. Consequently, the bonding strength of propyl and propylene on the alloyed surfaces is lowered. With the decomposition of the adsorption energy, the change in the surface deformation energy is predicted to be the dominant factor that determines the variation in the adsorption energy on the surface alloys, while on the bulk alloys the change in the binding energy makes a major contribution. The introduction of Sn lowers the energy barrier for propylene desorption and simultaneously increases the activation energy for propylene dehydrogenation, which has a positive effect on the selectivity toward propylene production. Considering the compromise between the catalytic activity and selectivity, the Pt3Sn bulk alloy is the best candidate for propane dehydrogenation.

Abstract:The selective propane dehydrogenation to propylene was studied to enhance Pt−Sn/SAPO-34 catalyst performance. The objective was to achieve higher propylene selectivity; therefore, the reaction was parametrically characterized to obtain necessary information to integrate the process operating conditions. The optimum operating conditions were found to be temperature 585 °C, weight hour space velocity 5.6 h−1 or lower, H2/C3H8 molar ratio 0.25, and conversion range 14−25%. Further intensification and the role of Sn on the performance of Pt−Sn/SAPO-34 catalyst were investigated, as stereochemistry and thermodynamics are inextricably tied up with each other. Abstract:Heterogeneous bimetallic catalysts are widely used in industrial processes, and the structural features of the bimetallic catalysts have profound impacts on their properties in numerous catalytic processes. Bimetallic nanoclusters with particle sizes ≤1 nm have shown better performances in various catalytic reactions in comparison to conventional bimetallic nanoparticles with sizes above 1 nm. Despite the progress made in recent years in the synthesis and catalytic studies of bimetallic nanoclusters, achieving a fundamental understanding of the structure–reactivity relationships at the molecular and atomic levels remains challenging because of the complexity of the bimetallic catalysts with particle sizes ≤1 nm. In this work, we have studied the structural features of supported bimetallic PtSn species with different sizes (∼0.6 to ∼1.6 nm), which is shown to be associated with the size-dependent formation process of bimetallic PtSn species according to theoretical modeling and experimental studies. Abstract:Surface and catalytic properties of PtSnSr/Al2O3 catalysts were studied by using TPR, pyridine-IR, H2-chemisorption and n-butane dehydrogenation reaction test. It was shown that the addition of strontium ions enhanced the interaction among tin and other components, modified the surface acidity and increased the bare fraction of platinum. These led to higher activity of PtSnSr/Al2O3 catalyst for n-butane dehydrogenation.
Ptsnna/Suz-4: an Efficient Catalyst for Propane Dehydrogenation

Abstract:The structure and catalytic properties of PtSn catalysts supported on SUZ-4 and ZSM-5 zeolite have been studied by using various experimental techniques including XRD, nitrogen adsorption, NH3-TPD, TG, H2-TPR and TPO techniques combined with propane dehydrogenation tests. It has been shown that SUZ-4-supported PtSnNa (PtSnNa/SUZ-4) was determined to be a better catalyst for propane dehydrogenation than conventional catalysts supported on ZSM-5, owing to its higher catalytic activity and stability. Dibenzothiophene poisoning experiments were performed to investigate the detailed structures of the two supported catalysts. The characterization of the two catalysts indicates that the distribution of Pt on the porous support affects the activity. In contrast to ZSM-5-supported catalysts, Pt particles on the PtSnNa/SUZ-4 are primarily dispersed over the external surface and are not as readily deactivated by carbon deposition. This is because that the strong acid sites of the SUZ-4 zeolite evidently prevented the impregnation of the Pt precursor H2PtCl6 into the zeolite. In contrast, the weak acid sites of the ZSM-5 zeolite led to more of the precursor entering the zeolite tunnels, followed by transformation to highly dispersed Pt clusters during calcination. In the case of the PtSnNa/ZSM-5, the interactions between Sn oxides and the support were lessened, owing to the weaker acidity of the ZSM-5 zeolite. The dispersed Sn oxides were therefore easier to reduce to the metallic state, thus decreasing the catalytic activity for hydrocarbon dehydrogenation.

Abstract:The development of thermally stable Pt-based catalysts with superior performance for propane dehydrogenation reactions remains a daunting challenge. In this study, a series of PtSn-Mg(Zn)AlO catalysts with different Zn and Pt contents were synthesized by the anion-exchange method for the propane dehydrogenation reaction. To investigate the influence of Zn on the reaction performance and the catalyst structure, the prepared catalysts were characterized with several analytical techniques, including XRD, TEM, HRTEM, H-2-TPD and CO pulse chemisorption. A good propane conversion (initially higher than 55% and averaging 45.2% over a period of 2 h) and propene selectivity (higher than 99%) were obtained experimentally with PtSn-Mg(3Zn)AlO at 550 degrees C. The results demonstrated that Pt provided the active sites and that Zn was a promoter. The HRTEM and CO pulse chemisorption results indicated that the addition of Zn to the PtSn-MgAlO catalyst can stabilize the dispersion of metal particles and thus inhibit the sintering of Pt particles. Furthermore, the activities of the used catalysts were almost recovered through reaction-regeneration cycles with the burning-off of coke during five cycles.
Effect of Si/Al ratio on performance of Pt–Sn-based catalyst supported on ZSM-5 zeolite for n-butane conversion to light olefins

Abstract:The performance of Pt–Sn-based catalyst, supported on ZSM-5 of different Si/Al ratios were investigated for simultaneous dehydrogenation and cracking of n-butane to produce light olefins. The catalysts were characterized by number of physio-chemical techniques including XRF, TEM, IR spectra, NH3-TPD and O2-pulse analysis. Increase in Si/Al ratio of zeolite support ZSM-5 significantly increased light olefin's selectivity, while feed conversion decreases due to lower acidity of support. The results indicated that both the n-butane cracking and dehydrogenation activity to light olefin's over Pt–Sn/ZSM-5 samples with increasing Si/Al ratios greatly enhanced catalytic performance. The catalysts were deactivated with time-on-stream due to the formation of carbon-containing deposits. A coke deposition was significantly related to catalyst activity, while at higher Si/Al ratio catalyst the coke precursors were depressed. These results suggested that the Pt–Sn/ZSM-5 catalyst of Si/Al ratio 300 is superior in achieving high total olefins selectivity (above 90wt.%). The Pt–Sn/ZSM-5 also demonstrates resistance towards hydrothermal treatment, as analyzed through the three successive reaction-regeneration cycles.
