Abstract:Microcalorimetric adsorption was used to determine quantitatively the number and strength of acid/base sites on the oxide samples of Eu2O3, CeO2, MgO, ZnO, Al2O3 and NiO. The initial heats of NH4 and CO2 adsorption were found to be proportional to Sanderson electronegativities of the samples.

Abstract:The technique of microcalorimetric adsorption and its application for measurements of surface acidity and basicity have been reviewed. Specifically, the strength and number of surface acid and base sites can be quantitatively titrated by the microcalorimetric adsorption of NH 3 and CO 2 as probe molecules. In addition, in situ infrared spectroscopy provides the information about the nature of the surface acid and base sites. For example, Lewis acid and base sites on metal oxides are coordinatively unsaturated metal cations and oxygen anions, respectively, while Brnsted acid and base sites are the hydroxyl groups on the surface. In addition, the strengths of surface acidity and basicity as defined by the adsorption heat of NH 3 and CO 2 can be correlated with Sanderson electronegativity of the metal oxides, and the interactions of basic probe molecules with acidic surface may be described by Drago parameters. Thus, strong surface acidity can be obtained by preparing the surface possessing coordinatively unsaturated metal cations with high electronegativity while strong surface basicity may be obtained by preparing the surface possessing coordinatively unsaturated oxygen anions associated with metal cations with low electronegativity.

Abstract:Magnesium–iron mixed oxides with Mg/Fe molar ratios 1,3, and 6 were prepared from hydrotalcite-type precursors. Microcalorimetric adsorption of NH3and CO2showed that the surface acidity and basicity of the mixed oxides after calcination at 673 K are similar despite the different Mg/Fe ratios. Increasing calcination temperature from 673 to 773 K significantly decreased the surface area of the 3 Mg/Fe oxide, but the densities of both the acid and base sites were not changed. Mössbauer spectroscopy revealed that the reduction of the 3 Mg/Fe oxide (Fe2O3/MgO) in H2at 673 K converted all Fe3+to Fe2+. The resulted FeO/MgO exhibited the same acidity as that of the Fe2O3/MgO, but the basicity of the FeO/MgO was greatly enhanced. Reduction at 773 K resulted in the formation of 76% Fe2+and 24% Fe0as detected by Mössbauer spectroscopy. The Fe/FeO/MgO sample formed exhibited very low heat for the adsorption of NH3(40 kJ/mol) indicating that all iron atoms on the surface are Fe0. However, a substantial basicity remained on the surface of this sample that may account for its high olefin selectivity compared with pure iron catalyst in the Fischer–Tropsch synthesis.

Abstract:The Fe3O4/(acrylate methyl ester-co-divinylbenzene) magnetic microspheres were prepared by suspension polymerization. The application of these microspheres as an adsorbent for metal ions adsorption was examined. The results showed that the diameter of the magnetic adsorbent was 35～55μm and the amount of Fe3O4 was 18%. The adsorbent showed high efficiency for the removal of metal ions. The maximum adsorption capacity (qm) obtained by the Langmuir isotherm was 2.3 mmol/g for Hg2+ , 2.2 mmol/g for Cu2+ and 1.1 mmol/g for Ni2+ . The adsorption rate constant calculated by Lagergrent equation was 0.023 min-1 for Hg2+ , 0.034 min-1 for Cu2+ and 0.036 min-1 for Ni2+. Regeneration of the adsorbent was achieved using 1mol/L H2SO4.

Abstract:The adsorption of MgO molecules on a Fe(001) surface was studied using density functional theory (DFT) and projector augmented wave methods. The energetically most favored configurations for different adsorption sites considered were identified. The most preferable adsorption geometry is when the MgO molecules are parallel to the surface, with Mg in the interstitial site and O in on-top of the Fe atom. During the adsorption of subsequent MgO molecules in this geometry, a sharp, non-oxidized interface is formed between the MgO adlayer and Fe(001) surface. The adsorption of MgO perpendicular to the surface, with oxygen incorporated in the topmost Fe layer is less probable, but may lead to the formation of the FeO layer when stabilized with an excess of oxygen atoms. Structural, electronic and magnetic properties of both interface types were examined for the MgO coverage from 1/9 to 1 monolayer (ML). Electronic and magnetic properties are sensitive to the MgO coverage. For lower coverage of MgO, clear hybridization between the Fe 3d and O 2p states is shown. The average magnetic moment of the surface Fe atoms is reduced with coverage, achieving 2.78 $\mu_{\rm B}$ for 1 ML of MgO.

Study of Surface Acidity/Basicity of Cuo/Gamma-Al2o3 with Microcalorimetric Technique

Abstract:The gamma-Al2O3 supported CuO samples were studied. XRD results showed that the loading and calcination temperature affected the surface structure. For example, CuO crystallite appeared at the CuO loading of 7% (about 0.82mmol/100m(2)) on the support. Both CuO crystallite and CuAl2O4 spinel were present when the CuO/gamma-Al2O3 sample was calcined at the same temperature (400degreesC). Microcalonimetric adsorption of CO2 and NH3 revealed that the strength of both the acidity and basicity decreased with the increase of CuO loading for the CuO/gamma-Al2O3 sample. The Increase of calcination temperature further decreased the basicity while the acidity was not affected.

Abstract:Mg(Al)O composite oxides obtained from hydrotalcite compounds upon calcination at 673, 873 and 1073K, respectively, show the patterns of MgO by X-ray difffraction measurements. The samples calcined over 873K also show the patterns of MgAl2O4 spinel. Microcalorimetric measurements of NH3 and CO2 adsorptions were used to determine the strength and density of these sites. It is discovered that the basicity sequence is MAO - 2>MAO - 3 ≈MAO - 1, while acidity order is MAO - 1>MAO - 3≈MAO - 2. NH3 and CO2· molecules were used as the probing molecules to investigate the nature of acid and base sites on Magnesium - Aluminium composite oxides. Infrared spectroscopic studies of these adsorped molecules indicated that the acid sites were mainly Lewis acid sites, whereas the base sites were surface oxygen anions. The results showed that the calcination temperature has little influence on the nature of surface base sites. Results of solid - state magic - angel - spinning 27Al NMR revealed that significant transitions of coordinate state for Al3+ occur in the samples upon calcination at 673, 873 and 1073K, respectively.

Abstract:The acidity of mesoporous materials FeSiMCM-41, LaSiMCM-41, SiM-CM-41, AlSiMCM-41 and HAlSiMCM-41 has been investigated by microcalorimetric measurement of NH3 adsorption and temperature-programmed NH3 desorption method. In the initial stage of adsorption, the acid strength sequence is SiMCM-41 > HAlSiMCM-41 > AlSiMCM-41 > FeSiMCM-41 > LaSiMCM-41, in agreement with that found for microporous molecular sieve materials. A small number of strong acid sites of SiMCM-41 should result from the aluminum impurity contained in the silica source material. The acid density sequence is HAlSiMCM-41 ≫ AlSiMCM-41 > FeS-iMCM-41 > LaSiMCM-41≈SiMCM-41 and can be explained by the existing state of trivalent atoms in these samples reported in previous work. This sequence is consistent with that from NH3-TPD measurement. However, the technique of microcalorimetric adsorption is preferable in studying those samples where NH3-TPD plots could not be back to baseline at elevated temperature.

Abstract:Basic metal oxides BaO was added to γ-Al_2O_3 in order to obtain the supports with low acidity and high surface area at high temperatures. The technique combining FT-IR with microcalorimetric adsorption for the adsorption of ammonia and carbon dioxide were used to study the catalysts. XRD results indicated the formation of aluminates on the supported samples calcined at high temperatures, which prevents the transformation of γ-Al_2O_3 to θ-Al_2O_3 and α-Al_2O_3. The addition of BaO did not seem to decrease the surface acidity of γ-Al_2O_3 significantly, but increased the surface basicity substantially when the sample was calcined at 600℃. Calcination of the BaO/γ-Al_2O_3 sample at 1000℃ resulted in the decrease of both acidity and basicity.

Abstract:Using Embedded-atom-method (EAM) potential, we have performed in detail molecular dynamics studies on a Fe adatom adsorption and diffusion dynamics on three low miller index surfaces, Fe (110), Fe (001), and Fe (111). Our results present that adatom adsorption energies and diffusion barriers on these surfaces have similar monotonic trend: adsorption energies, Ea(110) Ea(001) Ea(111), diffusion barriers, Ed(110) Ed(001) Ed(111). On the Fe (110) surface, adatom simple jump is the main diffusion mechanism with relatively low energy barrier; nevertheless, adatoms exchange with surface atoms play a dominant role in surface diffusion on the Fe (001).
Oxygen adsorption, absorption and diffusion in FeCrNi medium entropy alloy: an ab initio study

Abstract:Despite tremendous efforts to understand interstitial diffusion in bulk alloys, a clear understanding of the principal elemental effect on surface interstitial diffusion is still lacking. In this study, a first‐principles approach is employed to study oxygen interstitial diffusion in FeCrNi medium entropy alloy (MEA) based on principal element content at various subsurface sites. Oxygen adsorption energy on surfaces, solution energy at interstitial sites, and activation energy for oxygen permeation are calculated. The adsorption energy for oxygen cohesion to all investigated surfaces was lowest for the sites containing Cr, suggesting a positive effect of Cr in producing a chromium oxide scale. In addition, we have calculated the contribution of the principal element to the stability of the interstitial sites and the activation energy to diffuse between them. This work provides insights into the formation of chromium scaling based on oxygen adsorption and permeation, with potential implications in the design of oxidation‐resistant surfaces for high‐temperature applications.

Abstract:A microcalorimetric device for the measurement of differential heat of adsorption on the surface of solid catalysts is described. In the device, a Setaram heat flow microcalorimeter is used to measure the heat evolved from the sample. At the same time, an MKS Baratron capacitance manometer connected to a high vacuum system is employed to measure the amount of gas adsorbed on the sample. Besides, a special all-metal vessel for the measurement of differential heat of adsorption on highly active catalysts, which can be operated under the conditions of high vacuum and wide temperature range, was designed and constructed. The microcalorimeter was calibrated with standard materials. The measurement of differential heat of adsorption such as H-2 on Pt/SiO2 and gamma-Mo2N was carried out. The Pt/SiO2 sample was prepared by impregnation of silica with acetic solution of H2PtCl6.6H(2)O and the gamma-Mo2N sample was prepared by temperature-programmed reductive nitriding of highly pure MoO3 in a flow of pure NH3. The experimental results for the adsorption heat are in good agreement with those published in the literature. The error analysis of the experimental data shows that the relative errors for the measurement of adsorption heat are within 4%.

Abstract:Fundamental understanding of charge transfer reaction is essential for the surface and interface engineering of transition metal oxides. In this study the chemical reactivity towards oxygen and hydrogen (13 Pa) under applied thermal conditions (423-673 K), of two polymorphic forms of Fe2O3 nanoparticles (gamma-Fe2O3 and alpha-Fe2O3) are investigated with the combination of in situ ambient pressure X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (AP-XPS) and near edge X-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy (AP-NEXAFS). Our data show that the reactivity of these two polymorphs has a similar character based on the contribution of oxygen vacancy defect states and related material non-stoichiometry. Their exposure to hydrogen at increased temperature results in both cases in the surface reduction. However, gamma-Fe2O3 exhibits more covalent character and undergoes the reduction preferentially with a contribution of metallic Fe-0 than Fe2+, in contrast to alpha-Fe2O3. Further, upon introduction of oxygen at low temperature of 423 K, rapid re-oxidation process takes place at the Fe2O3 nanoparticles surface. Prepared gamma-Fe2O3 and alpha-Fe2O3 nanostructures exhibit in general high n-type and p-type sensor response towards hydrogen, respectively, in a wide concentrations range.
First-Principles Study on Adsorption Reaction of Oxygen Molecules on Fe (110) Crystal Surface

Abstract:The adsorption reaction between oxygen (O2) molecule and ferrum (Fe) (110) crystal surface in the oxidation process of Fe surface was studied by using the first-principles method. The differential charge density analysis of the adsorption sites of oxygen molecule on Fe (110) crystal surface, the calculation of adsorption energy at different sites and the analysis of electronic density of states showed that the stable adsorption position of oxygen molecule was parallel to Fe (110) crystal surface, and the oxygen atom tended to adsorb at the triangular gap of Fe atoms. The electronic structure of the adsorption system showed that the 2p electron orbital of oxygen atom plays a major role in the adsorption, and only O-Fe electron interaction exists when oxygen molecule is adsorbed in the parallel orientation, which makes the whole Fe (110) crystal surface lose electrons, increase the system potential and the risk of electrochemical corrosion. The research conclusions can provide theoretical support for the further insight in the oxidation corrosion mechanism of nuclear metal surface.

Abstract:The behaviors of SO2 oxidative adsorption and reduction decomposition of formed sulfate over Ce-Mg-Al-Fe-O de-SOx additive were studied by micro-reactor activity test system, XRD and AES. The results showed that 10%Ce/MgAl1.8Fe0.2O4*MgO possessed excellent de-SOx capacity. The introduction of iron ions into the crystal lattice structure of MgAl2O4 spinel caused the lattice distortion that increased de-SOx activity and improved the reductibility of MgAl2O4 additive.
