Abstract:It was first reported that by putting a ��/2 phase plate inside the cavity (instead of outside), the multi-mode oscillation can be effectively restrained so that a new beam output can be realized efficiently on a CO2 laser with a tube length L=900mm, tube diameter D=9mm, R1=��, R2=3m, and a discharge length=800mm. This approach provides the possibility for not only the birth of a new generation CO2 lasers but also the improvement of other types of lasers.

Abstract:A novel beam called cosine-Gauss beam is reported in this letter, which is a good model for describing the mode of resonators with step-phase mirror. The beam quality factor of cosine-Gauss beam is smaller than one. cosine-Gauss beam is formed by coherent superposition of two correlated Gaussian spherical beams with different centers.

Abstract:A simple physical picture for producing the new beam CO2 lasers was put forward, and based on which, a new beam intracavity CO2 laser was successfully developed recently with a cavity length of 500mm, a discharge-region-length of 420mm, output of 17W, and its equivalent beam-quality-factor M2=0.26. If the concept on the ��equivalent M2�� is reasonable, then it becomes possible to make the CO2 lasers with their output beyond the limitation set by the diffraction restriction.

Abstract:A 320 W new beam carbon dioxide laser was developed on the basis of �� phase jump principle. It is equivalent to common 700W carbon dioxide laser. The distribution of optical intensity of the new beam carbon dioxide laser was shown by graph, and the difference between the new beam and Gauss beam was studied by transformation focusing experiments. The results may be used to improve the quality of high power carbon dioxide laser.

Abstract:\According to the more complete diffraction theory, a series of new beams was invented both outside and inside laser cavity by using lambda/2 phase plate. A new beam with equivalent beam quality factor M-e(2)<1 is achieved on ten-watt CO2 laser and on hundred-Watt and thousand-Watt CO2 laser with axial express flux. It may be named as the first kind of new beam laser. From the point of view of practical applications, we designed and produced a new structure of laser cavity whose output mirror was a special mirror with step reflectivity. We have realized 1000W new beam on CO2 laser with transverse express flux, which is close to the fundamental mode. It may be named as the second kind new laser beam. Its structure is simpler than others, but it brings excellent results.

Abstract:The historical and present research work of our group in laser beam on optical beam quality is reviewed in this paper. An invented intracavity CO2 laser with Me2 < 1 is presented, and the optical beam quality of beam from subwavelength aperture is investigated. Equivalent optical beam quality of quantum well laser beam is demonstrated. The progress will promote scientific development in correlative fields, also bring potential applications for optical industry.

Abstract:A method is presented for beam quality improvement, in master oscillator power amplifier laser systems. Intensive study was first carried out with the beam wavefront evolution in a laser resonator. When the laser beam propagates inside the resonator, the spherical aberration coefficient of the beam wavefront can change sign, i.e., the negative spherical aberration coefficient can turn to positive, and vice versa. This process also occurs when the beam propagates outside the resonator in a free space. The laser beam, from an oscillator with negative spherical aberration, was found to be well-compensated by the positive spherical aberration of a strongly pumped laser rod in a laser amplifier. The laser beam quality M2 factor has been significantly improved, from 2.2 to 1.4, while the output power has been scaled from 31 W up to 60 W.

Abstract:A low diffraction beam is obtained by altering the existing resonator of a CO2 laser using a special phase plate. The phase plate is designed based on the boundary diffraction principle and is implemented on the resonator rear mirror. It is found that the low diffraction beam has a smaller M2 value than that of a Gaussian beam. The effects of the improved beam quality on a laser ablation process are investigated using a polymeric material. A theoretical model is provided to predict the laser ablated hole profile and penetration depth. The theoretical results are in agreement with the experimental measurements. Both the experimental and theoretical results show that the low diffraction beam has marked advantages over the Gaussian beam in ablation-dominated material removal processes in terms of larger depth and smaller taper at the same average power level.

Abstract:CO2 laser-driven electron acceleration in low-density plasma is demonstrated using particle-in-cell simulation. An intense CO2 laser pulse of long wavelength excites a wake bubble that has a large elongated volume for accelerating a large number of electrons before reaching the charge saturation limit. A transversely injected laser pulse is used to induce and control the electron injection. It is found that an electron bunch with total charge up to 10 nC and absolute energy spread less than 16 MeV can be obtained. As a result, the charge per energy interval of the bunch reaches up to 0.6 nC/MeV. Intense CO2-laser based electron acceleration can provide a new direction for generating highly charged electron bunches with low energy spread, which is of much current interest, especially for table-top X-ray generation.

Abstract:Experimental observations of beam profile evolution and beam quality changes in an asymmetrical diode-end-pumped laser oscillator are presented. The beam intensity distribution and beam size show great differences between the two intra-cavity counter-propagating beams. Measurements also show that the beam quality changes when the beam passes through the gain medium. These phenomena are attributed to the thermally induced aberrations and soft aperture induced diffractions. The results present a novel clue of designing a high power laser oscillator with fundamental mode output.

Abstract:We report an innovative approach for beam shaping of edge-emitting semiconductor diode lasers using a single double-axial hyperboloidal micro-lens fabricated with femtosecond laser direct writing technology. The two hyperboloids of different axial lengths focus the light from fast and slow axes to an identical focal spot. The divergence angles were shaped from 60° and 9° to 6.9 and 32.3 mrad, respectively, and the single-end fiber coupling efficiency is measured higher than 80%. The device is simple in fabrication, robust in structure, and easy for operation, by which multiple reflections and absorptions at interfaces are reduced, and assembly errors are minimized.

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrate the controllable laser output of cylindrical vector (CV) beams, which feature flexibility, high efficiency, and good beam quality. Particularly, the CV laser beams have negligible radial components, distinguishing themselves from the extra-cavity-generated CV beams. The output state is controlled by an intra-cavity vortex half-wave plate (VWP). By changing the topological charge (l) of VWP, we produce l = 1 and l = 2 CV beams for example. Through rotating the half-wave plate inside the cavity, the laser outputs arbitrary CV beams around the equator of the corresponding high-order Poincaré spheres. For l = 1 and l = 2 CV beams, the polarization purities are as high as 97.8% and 96.7%, the sloping efficiencies are 15.5% and 5.4%, and the beam quality factors are 2.10 and 3.31, respectively. Our result provides a reliable CV laser source for advanced applications in optical imaging and optical manipulation.

Abstract:High-power single-longitudinal-mode regrowth-free gain-coupled distributed feedback laser diode based on ridge waveguide with periodic current injection is achieved at 990 nm. Our device is fabricated only by standard i-line lithography with micron-scale precision, obtains an excellent performance at high injection current. A continuous-wave power of over 0.681 W is achieved at 3 A. The maximum continuous-wave power at single-longitudinal-mode operation is up to 0.303 W at 1.4 A. Narrow linewidth emission has been reached with a 3 dB spectrum width less than 1.41 pm. The high side mode suppression ratio is over 35 dB. The lateral far field divergence angle is only 15.05°, the beam quality factor M2 is 1.245, achieving a laterally near-diffraction-limit emission. It is more beneficial for single-mode fiber coupling as pumping sources and other applications which require high beam quality at high power with easy fabrication technique.
