Abstract:It was first reported that by putting a ��/2 phase plate inside the cavity (instead of outside), the multi-mode oscillation can be effectively restrained so that a new beam output can be realized efficiently on a CO2 laser with a tube length L=900mm, tube diameter D=9mm, R1=��, R2=3m, and a discharge length=800mm. This approach provides the possibility for not only the birth of a new generation CO2 lasers but also the improvement of other types of lasers.

Abstract:\According to the more complete diffraction theory, a series of new beams was invented both outside and inside laser cavity by using lambda/2 phase plate. A new beam with equivalent beam quality factor M-e(2)<1 is achieved on ten-watt CO2 laser and on hundred-Watt and thousand-Watt CO2 laser with axial express flux. It may be named as the first kind of new beam laser. From the point of view of practical applications, we designed and produced a new structure of laser cavity whose output mirror was a special mirror with step reflectivity. We have realized 1000W new beam on CO2 laser with transverse express flux, which is close to the fundamental mode. It may be named as the second kind new laser beam. Its structure is simpler than others, but it brings excellent results.

Abstract:A simple physical picture for producing the new beam CO2 lasers was put forward, and based on which, a new beam intracavity CO2 laser was successfully developed recently with a cavity length of 500mm, a discharge-region-length of 420mm, output of 17W, and its equivalent beam-quality-factor M2=0.26. If the concept on the ��equivalent M2�� is reasonable, then it becomes possible to make the CO2 lasers with their output beyond the limitation set by the diffraction restriction.

Abstract:We investigate lasing and output directionality of limacon-shaped microdisk lasers of dimensions comparable to the emission wavelength. The far-field patterns are shown to differ between lasing modes, unlike in large cavities where lasing modes exhibit universal emission directionality determined by chaotic ray dynamics. Unidirectional emission is obtained for certain modes in the wavelength-scale cavities. It results from weak coupling of nearly isotropic high-quality resonances to anisotropic low-quality resonances, combined with chiral symmetry breaking of clockwise and counterclockwise propagating waves. The latter is described by an extended ray dynamics which includes the Goos-Hanchen shift and the Fresnel filtering. Mode hybridization and wave effects in open cavities make it possible to control the output properties of individual lasing modes in wavelength-scale lasers.

Abstract:A low diffraction beam is obtained by altering the existing resonator of a CO2 laser using a special phase plate. The phase plate is designed based on the boundary diffraction principle and is implemented on the resonator rear mirror. It is found that the low diffraction beam has a smaller M2 value than that of a Gaussian beam. The effects of the improved beam quality on a laser ablation process are investigated using a polymeric material. A theoretical model is provided to predict the laser ablated hole profile and penetration depth. The theoretical results are in agreement with the experimental measurements. Both the experimental and theoretical results show that the low diffraction beam has marked advantages over the Gaussian beam in ablation-dominated material removal processes in terms of larger depth and smaller taper at the same average power level.

Abstract:A 320 W new beam carbon dioxide laser was developed on the basis of �� phase jump principle. It is equivalent to common 700W carbon dioxide laser. The distribution of optical intensity of the new beam carbon dioxide laser was shown by graph, and the difference between the new beam and Gauss beam was studied by transformation focusing experiments. The results may be used to improve the quality of high power carbon dioxide laser.

Abstract:The interaction of two copropagating laser beams with crossed polarization in the underdense plasmas has been investigated analytically with the variational approach and numerically. The coupled envelope equations of the two beams include both the relativistic mass correction and the ponderomotive force effect. It is found that the relativistic effect always plays the role of beam attraction, while the ponderomotive force can play both the beam attraction and beam repulsion, depending upon the beam diameters and their transverse separation. In certain conditions, the two beam centers oscillate transversely around a propagation axis. In this case, the ponderomotive effect can lead to a higher oscillation frequency than that accounting for the relativistic effect only. The interaction of two beams decreases the threshold power for self-focusing of the single beam. A strong self-trapping beam can channel a weak one.

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrate the controllable laser output of cylindrical vector (CV) beams, which feature flexibility, high efficiency, and good beam quality. Particularly, the CV laser beams have negligible radial components, distinguishing themselves from the extra-cavity-generated CV beams. The output state is controlled by an intra-cavity vortex half-wave plate (VWP). By changing the topological charge (l) of VWP, we produce l = 1 and l = 2 CV beams for example. Through rotating the half-wave plate inside the cavity, the laser outputs arbitrary CV beams around the equator of the corresponding high-order Poincaré spheres. For l = 1 and l = 2 CV beams, the polarization purities are as high as 97.8% and 96.7%, the sloping efficiencies are 15.5% and 5.4%, and the beam quality factors are 2.10 and 3.31, respectively. Our result provides a reliable CV laser source for advanced applications in optical imaging and optical manipulation.

Abstract:This paper presents a study on continuous wave tunable CO2 lasers, which could be used in good pumping source of optically pumped gas THz laser. A series of comparative experiments to investigate the effects of cavity structure and discharge current on laser tunability and output power was conducted. The wavelength selection of CO2 lasers primarily achieved by altering the angle of incidence of the blazing grating. Two enclosed CO2 laser tubes were designed and customized, one was used for external cavity structure and the other was used for semi-external cavity structure research. Using the semi-external cavity structure, 78 lines was obtained at the range of 9-11μm, and achieved 60.7 W of laser output power at a wavelength of 10.59 μm. A beam quality factor of M2 = 1.68 was measured using the traveling 90/10 knife-edge method.

An invented intracavity CO2 laser with Me2 < 1 is presented, and the optical beam quality of beam from subwavelength aperture is investigated. Equivalent optical beam quality of quantum well laser beam is demonstrated. Abstract:In order to obtain a high beam quality fundamental mode CO 2 laser output ,this paper proposes a method of using small aperture to select transverse mode for RF waveguide CO2 laser with line selected by grating .The circular aperture with size similar to square waveguide cross section is inserted into the laser cavity to inhibit generation of higher -order transverse modes .The laser transverse mode and laser output power changes with time were studied experimentally before and after aperture inserting .Under the condition of 180W RF power ,the fundamental mode laser with 2W output power of 10P (20) branch was obtained . The laser can operate stable for a long time in EH 11 mode .The method of transverse mode selection can give reference for the research on mode selection of square waveguide laser .

Abstract:In order to improve the output beam quality of slab waveguide CO2 lasers, we presented an optical phase-shifting array resonator with a phase-shifting array end mirror used in RF- excited diffusively cooled slab waveguide CO2 lasers. A series of phase-shifting array end mirrors with different parameters are employed in our experiments and highly spatially suppressed single-peak intensity distributions in the far field, which have advantages of high brightness and good characteristics of propagation, have been obtained respectively. Theoretically we analyzed the characteristics of the output mode and well explained the phase coupling of this kind of slab waveguide CO2 lasers.

Abstract:We report on versatile orbital angular momentum beam generation through the association of a 61-channels coherent beam combining digital laser and a liquid-crystal q-plate. Particularly, high-order vortex beams that carry orbital angular momentum are generated with radial, azimuthal and/or circular polarization states. The q-plate is designed and manufactured to sustain high average power ensuring that the vortex spatial mode is preserved. The proposed system offers an extra degree of freedom for various applications requesting beam shaping with specific polarization state.

Abstract:In the past few years, annular structured beams have been extensively studied due to their unique "doughnut" structure and characteristics such as phase and polarization vortices. Especially in the 2 µm wavelength range, they have shown promising applications in fields such as novel laser communication, optical processing, and quantum information processing. In this Letter, we observed basis vector patterns with orthogonality and completeness by finely cavity-mode tailoring with end-mirror space position in a Tm:CaYAlO4 laser. Multiple annular structured beams including azimuthally, linearly, and radially polarized beams (APB, LPB, and RPB) operated at a Q-switched mode-locking (QML) state with a typical output power of ∼18 mW around 1962 nm. Further numerical simulation proved that the multiple annular structured beams are the coherent superposition of different Hermitian Gaussian modes. Using a self-made M-Z interferometer, we have demonstrated that the obtained multiple annular beams have a vortex phase with orbital angular momentum (OAM) of l = ±1. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first observation of vector and scalar annular vortex beams in the 2 µm solid-state laser.
