Abstract:dA. novel method for laser beam smoothing by rotating random phase plate is presented in this paper. A random phase plate for CO2 laser was made, and satisfactory results were obtained. The experimental results coincide very well with theoretical analysis.

Abstract:The numerical analysis of CW multimode laser beam transformed by time-varying random phase plate is presented in this paper. The method is based on diffraction integral formula. The dependence of the intensity distribution on the element size, changing frequency and duty ratio is discussed in detail. The numerical results account for the experimental results satisfactorily.

Abstract:A low diffraction beam is obtained by altering the existing resonator of a CO2 laser using a special phase plate. The phase plate is designed based on the boundary diffraction principle and is implemented on the resonator rear mirror. It is found that the low diffraction beam has a smaller M2 value than that of a Gaussian beam. The effects of the improved beam quality on a laser ablation process are investigated using a polymeric material. A theoretical model is provided to predict the laser ablated hole profile and penetration depth. The theoretical results are in agreement with the experimental measurements. Both the experimental and theoretical results show that the low diffraction beam has marked advantages over the Gaussian beam in ablation-dominated material removal processes in terms of larger depth and smaller taper at the same average power level.

Abstract:A new modification of the output plane constraint is used in the iterative algorithm for designing diffractive phase plates (DPPs) to produce spatial beam smoothing in the fractional Fourier (FRT) domain. Compared with previously published algorithms, this algorithm can provide faster convergence, more powerful ability to overcome the local minimum problem and better smoothing quality. By computer simulation, it has shown that the DPP designed by this algorithm has the advantages of high uniformity at the main lobe, low profile error and steep edge.

Abstract:It was first reported that by putting a ��/2 phase plate inside the cavity (instead of outside), the multi-mode oscillation can be effectively restrained so that a new beam output can be realized efficiently on a CO2 laser with a tube length L=900mm, tube diameter D=9mm, R1=��, R2=3m, and a discharge length=800mm. This approach provides the possibility for not only the birth of a new generation CO2 lasers but also the improvement of other types of lasers.

Abstract:Beam-shaping plays a very important role in the field of laser processing. Laser quench needs a rectangular speckle, which has a flat top, steep sides, high efficiency and low sidelobes. Diffractive phase elements (DPEs) have many superexcellent characters, which conventional optical elements have difficulties to achieve. Designing of the phase plane comes down to phase retrieval problem. Geometrical transformation and multiform iterative algorithms, such as G-S algorithm, Input-Output algorithm, ST algorithm are adopted. Through comparison of the results from different methods, some evaluations about algorithms are made. ST algorithm is the most feasible method for the problem, the result of which can meet the requirements of practical process. Some simulation experiments and discussions about algorithms have been done. To be fabricated as a binary optical element (BOE), the result of design has been quantified to 16 steps.

Abstract:It has been widely accepted that spatial beam smoothing is essential in coupling laser energy to inertial confinement fusion targets. In this paper, kinoform phase plate arrays have been proposed to produce spatially homogenized far fields for a broad range of phase and irradiance non-uniformities in the incident beam. A global-local united search algorithm has been presented to design a phase plate element to concentrate more than 95% energy of laser beams on a flat-top super-Gaussian (SG) envelope. A spatial-fining technique has been proposed to control the intermediate-spatial-frequency overlapping intensity modulation generated by various phase plate elements. For a flat incident aperture size of 40 cm, a laser wavelength of 351 nm, and a lens focal length of 1000 mm, 10 x 10 phase plate arrays have been designed to produce sixteenth-order SG profiles with the intensity modulation interval less than 5 mu m. More than 96% of the incident energy is homogeneously constrained in the desired region.

Abstract:A multilayer phase-shifting-surface-based flat plate is designed to offer a combination of lens and spiral phase plate (SPP) for orbital angular momentum (OAM) beam generation and convergence at 60 GHz. The proposed design consists of a series of phase-shift unit cells to control the emergent phase and form a flat lens for the purpose of beam focusing. The results of simulation and experiment verify that the OAM beam with small divergence angle can be achieved.

Abstract:Usually the intensity distribution of laser is Gaussian, but practical laser applications often require beam shaping. A ring-shaped pattern may be required in the confocal scanning microscopic imaging. Because phase-only spatial light modulators (SLMs) can be flexibly used to convert light wave fronts, the investigation of beam shaping by SLMs has become an active research area. In this paper, a phase-only liquid crystal spatial light modulator is used to transform a single-mode He-Ne laser into a ring-shaped pattern. This generated ring beam is investigated experimentally, and the experimental results with the pinhole size are analyzed.

Abstract:Combining random searching algorithm and simulated annealing algorithm with different appraising functions, a method of designing diffractive phase plates (DPPs ) used for beam shaping has been proposed. Thought the method, the multi-function DPP using for gaussian beam-shaper has been designed to perform required field distributions at different planes, such as high energy efficiency (more than 0.97) and low side lobe (BotRMS less than 0.0148) at the focal plane, and at the same time high uniform main lobe (TopRMS less than 0.11) at the non-focal plane.

Abstract:In high power laser systems, nonlinear effect, one of the key factors of beam wavefront aberration and even irreversible damage to system, has always been one of the top considerations of researchers for decades. A hybrid ray-tracing method for both linear media and nonlinear media based on geometric optics is presented in this paper and realized by programming. In a simple optic system with KDP crystal, an obvious decline of beam quality is observed in high laser power density conditions and a method taking component intervals as compensation of beam quality is proved feasible. Considering the complexity of traditional modeling method based on surfaces, a modeling method based on components is established. Hopefully, the conclusions and flaws of this paper can shed light on relevant work and further research.

Abstract:We propose an ultrafast random polarization smoothing scheme to achieve ultrafast speckle movement and polarization randomization of the focal spot. In the scheme, each beamlet in a laser quad is driven by a rotating petal-like wavefront, giving rise to the ultrafast redistribution of the speckles within the focal spot. The rotating wavefront is induced by an optical Kerr medium pumped by a laser beam with rotating intensity distribution that is generated by the superposition of two Laguerre–Gaussian beams carrying conjugate vortex phase and frequency shift. In addition, by properly selecting the topological charges of the pump beams and polarization states of the beamlets, the beamlets in a quad can be divided into two sets with counter-rotating wavefronts and orthogonal polarizations, which further randomizes the polarization of the focal spot. Results indicate that the proposed scheme can reduce the contrast by more than 70% and the degree of polarization by more than 75% within several picoseconds, by utilizing the rotating phase pumped by two Laguerre-Gaussian beams with a peak intensity of 0.18GW/cm 2 and a frequency shift of 1 THz. The ultrafast random polarization smoothing scheme is expected to suppress the growth of Laser Plasma Instabilities (LPIs) including the filamentation and backscatter in indirect-drive inertial confinement fusion (ICF) facilities.

Abstract:Diffractive optical element(DOE) can be used for beam smoothing, owing to its high light efficiency, design flexibility and so on. The phase design of the DOE can be considered as an optimization problem and optimized by many kinds of algorithms. In this paper, the hybrid algorithm, merging Hill-climbing with Simulated Annealing, is adopted to design the phase of the DOE. The designed phase is the sum of many kinds of sine function with different period, amplitude and initial phase, which the continuous phase DOE is ensured. The continuous phase DOE is fabricated by ion etching, with a rotating hollowed-out mask. Experiments of beam smoothing are carried out with a pulse working Nd:YAG laser, and spots with a rather good beam smoothing performance are obtained.

Abstract:Indirect-drive Inertial Confinement Fusion(ICF) system has two requests: first, it requires incident beam to focus on a small spot with very low circular side-lobe around the edge of the hole; second, when it continue to transmit onto the wall of cavity, it requires uniform illumination. A two-step iteration algorithm aiming at two positions of this system is proposed to match these two requests with using Pure Phase Plate (PPE). Our results show that the circular side-lobe near the target hole has been depressed to about 10-11 W/cm2, and the beam has small top modulation on the target wall.

Abstract:Air turbulence is introduced to disturb the laser-beam before irradiating multi-step phase plates (MPP), which improve the light uniformity irradiation in the focal plane. The far-field character of the disturbed wavefront with and without MPP has been studied including the effects of large-scale phase fluctuations. Simulation results indicate that the intensity distribution can be smoothed by using the new method with the remaining flat-top profile on target plane after a period of accumulation.

Abstract:The limited quantization digit of voltage and the effect of fringing field between adjacent electrodes (phased-array controlling units) limit the deflection efficiency when a Liquid-Crystal Phased Array (LCPA) is used for beam steering. In this paper, an optimization algorithm named pattern search is proposed to improve the diffraction efficiency. This algorithm directly optimizes the step phase slope to obtain high diffraction efficiency, rather than discussing the complex relationship between the diffraction efficiency and various influence factors. Besides, other optimization algorithms based on phase retrieval, such as GS, need the entire energy distribution; however, it is hard to obtain in practical. Our algorithm need only the energy of the target diffraction point and it can be easily realized. Firstly, we construct the model for beam steering, and point out that the deformation of the phase slope by influence factors is the reason why conventional method can not realize high diffraction efficiency. Secondly, we construct an optimization model for the issues and apply the pattern search algorithm to optimize the diffraction efficiency. The simulation results show high performance of our algorithm comparing with the conventional steering method. Finally, a set of beam steering experiments were performed with a one-dimensional LCPA being set both according to the un-optimized and the optimized recipe, and the results were in very good agreement with the theoretical predictions. We show that the deflection efficiency can be drastically improved.

Abstract:The phase-only liquid crystal spatial light modulator (SLM) is a real-time electro-optic device capable of modulating the phase of an optical wavefront in space. SLMs have been harnessed for beam shaping. In this paper, an accelerated GS phase retrieval and iteration algorithm is used for designing the SLM phases which transformed a single-mode He-Ne laser into a ring-shaped pattern. These generated ring beams are investigated experimentally and the phenomena of the added prism phases are also observed. The experimental results showed that a given single-mode laser beam could be converted into a ring-shaped intensity distribution which corresponds to our designation.

Abstract:A new suggestion that there is a phase jump of (pi) in the boundary wave is put forward in this paper. This suggestion may be a supplement of Huygens-Fresnel principle. Based on this new suggestion, a series of new beam was invented, both outside and inside laser cavity. Especially, a new CO2 laser with equivalent beam quality factor M2 < 1 is achieved. it can be considered as the result of some controllable nonlinear self-focusing, and the physical background of deformed quantum mechanics.

Abstract:In this paper, a solution for speckle reduction using phase plate array (PPA) and lens array (LA) in a motionless way is proposed. The specially designed PPA is composed of sub-phase plates, which are constituted by phase patterns formed by Hadamard sub-matrices. Each component of the proposed optical system should satisfy the stated relationships. The incident laser beam will be incoherent after passing through PPA, and superpose on the screen under the action of LA and main lens. Speckle reduction can be achieved by the averaging of the incoherent speckle patterns. Because of abandoning the mechanical movement, it will be suitable for laser displays and images.

Abstract:Dynamical effects in three-beam X-ray diffraction are considered for the design of an X-ray phase plate to change linearly polarized X-rays into circularly and elliptically polarized ones. A working condition on selecting a proper three-beam diffraction is derived from the kinematical and the dynamical theories. Calculations on the intensities and phases of sigma- and pi-component waves are carried out based on the dynamical theory. An optics of realizing circular polarization is also proposed.
