Abstract:A novel beam called cosine-Gauss beam is reported in this letter, which is a good model for describing the mode of resonators with step-phase mirror. The beam quality factor of cosine-Gauss beam is smaller than one. cosine-Gauss beam is formed by coherent superposition of two correlated Gaussian spherical beams with different centers.

Abstract:Helico-conical beam is attractive for its phase front is nonseparable helical and conical phase function, which produces a spiral intensity distribution occurs at the focal plane. In this letter, the focal properties of cosh-Gaussian beam with helico-conical wavefront were investigated to show that helico-conical phase front does not always produce spiral intensity distribution. On increasing decentered parameters in cosh parts of the beams, the spiral focal pattern evolves into multiple intensity peaks with center main strongest peak. Under condition of higher decentered parameters, the focal spiral curve disappears. In addition, the topological charge also affects the focal pattern considerably.

Abstract:Half-space amplitude modulation was introduced into the linearly polarized cosh-Gaussian beams with sine-azimuthal variation wavefront, and corresponding tunable focal patterns were investigated in detail. Simulation results show that focal pattern can be changed remarkably by the amplitude modulation. And under condition of different beam parameters and phase parameter that indicates the sine-azimuthal variation wavefront, the focal pattern evolution also differs considerably. Some novel focal shape may appear, including cross-shape, multiple-peak focal pattern, multiple intensity lines, wheel focal pattern, bell shape, and swallowtail focal spots. Symmetry of the whole focal pattern can be altered remarkably, the whole focal pattern evolves into uniaxial symmetry about perpendicular axes for odd and even phase parameter, respectively.

Abstract:A high-order Bessel-Gaussian mode is introduced to describe hollow beams. The results for high-order Bessel-Gaussian beams propagating through lens focusing system and free space are derived in terms of Collins integral formula. The diffraction patterns and profile for high-order Bessel-Gaussian beams propagating through the above-mentioned optical systems are illustrated.

Abstract:We investigate the dynamics of partially coherent Pearcey-Gauss beams propagating in free space, theoretically and experimentally. They are produced by introducing the degree of coherence (DOC) function with Gaussian Schell-model correlation into the light source in the frequency domain. Under a nearly incoherent state, the oscillation of the sidelobe turns smooth, and the intensity distribution concentrates on the mainlobe. Particularly, partially coherent Pearcey-Gauss beams would maintain the inherent properties of autofocusing performance and inversion effect without diminishing the autofocusing distance and form-invariable propagation. Moreover, the opening angle and the shift of peak intensity of the beams can be controlled by the binary parabola in the spectrum distribution of the Pearcey function. Our experimental results are in great agreement with the theoretical analysis.

Abstract:A new mathematical model, described as hollow Gaussian beams (HGBs), is proposed to describe a dark hollow laser beam (DHB). The area of the dark region across the HGBs can easily be controlled by proper choice of the beam parameters. Based on the Collins integral, an analytical propagation formula for the HGBs through a paraxial optical system is derived. The HGBs also can be expressed as a superposition of a series of Lagurerre-Gaussian modes by use of a polynomial expansion. As a numerical example, the propagation properties of a DHB in free space are illustrated graphically. The HGBs provide a convenient and powerful way to describe and treat the propagation of DHBs and can be used conveniently to analyze atoms manipulated with a DHB. (C) 2003 Optical Society of America.

Abstract:We provide a simple analysis based on ray optics and Dirac notation for one and two-dimensional Cosine beams. We then went on to understand the properties of the Bessel beams. For the first time, we report on a generation of three-dimensional needle structures based on interference of one-dimensional Cosine beams. Straightforward mathematical calculations are used to derive the analytical expressions for Cosine beams. The present method of demonstration of Cosine beams may be utilized to understand other structured modes. The Dirac notation-based interference explanation used here can render new researchers to discover an easy way to understand the wave nature of light in fundamental interferometric experiments as well as in advanced-level experiments such as beam engineering technology, imaging, particle manipulation, light sheet microscopy, and light-matter interaction. We also provide an in-depth analysis of similarities among Cosine, Bessel, and Hermite-Gaussian beams.

Abstract:A new kind of light beam named the elliptical Hermite-cosine-Gaussian beam (EHCosGB) is introduced in this paper by using a tensor method. An analytical propagation expression for an EHCosGB passing through an axially nonsymmetrical optical system is derived by using vector integration. By virtue of numerical simulations, the propagation properties of EHCosGBs through a free space and a focusing system are illustrated, respectively. The results indicate that an EHCosGB on the input plane can be regarded as the elliptical Hermite-Gaussian beam (EHGB) modulated by the cosine curves with certain oscillating frequency. Some of the neighboring lobes are combined and TEM-type Hermite-cosh-Gaussian beams are formed during the propagation.

The evolution properties of the intensity distribution of HGBs in free space propagation are illustrated graphically using the derived propagation formula. By using matrix eigenvalues method, the laser cavity with diffraction optical elements, which can generate the dark hollow beams, was constructed. Dark hollow beams were realized in experiment and its intensity distribution properties in near field and far field were studied. The results derived from the experiment is coincident with those predicted by the theory. The dark hollow beams we have obtained can be used conveniently to analyze atoms manipulation and may provide a new method for atom cooling.

Abstract:The paraxial propagation of partially coherent beams with the Hermite–Gauss modes is investigated. A more generalized and simple expression of the mean-squared width and the beam propagation ratio (M2) of the beam with different mode order is obtained in terms of the cross-spectral density. Our results show that the higher order strengthens the variations of the mean-squared width and the beam propagation ratio for partially coherent beams, and the relation between the two parameters of partially coherent beams is independent of the coherence length.

Abstract:The evolution of cosine-Gauss beams in nonlocal optical medium which can be governed by the nonlinear Schrödinger equation with nonlocal nonlinearity is investigated. A set of mathematical analytical expressions describing propagation characteristics are derived, and the numerical simulation results and illustrations of typical propagation characteristics are given. The results show that the cosine-Gauss beam has a variety of light intensity distribution forms at the initial position and changes periodically in the propagation process. There are different propagation characteristics under different initial parameters of cosine-Gauss beams. If the cosine-Gauss beam is incident at the on-waist position, it can form a generalized soliton form, that is, the statistical transverse width of cosine-Gauss beams changes and the optical intensity distribution changes with a period; also, a generalized breathers can be formed, that is, the statistical transverse width and optical intensity distribution change with a period. If the cosine-Gauss beam is incident on the off-waist position, it only exist in the form of generalized breather and cannot form generalized soliton. The physical explanation is given.

Abstract:We propose a novel Schell model source for generating twisted partially coherent beams with an initial radius of curvature, which is called a twisted flat-topped cosine Gaussian Schell-model (TFCGSM) source. The TFCGSM beam comprises a wavefront phase and a flat-top structure, with the source degree of coherence determined by two cosine functions. Based on the Huygens–Fresnel principle, the general analytical expression of the cross-spectral density function of the TFCGSM beam propagating through the paraxial ABCD optical system is derived, and then its propagation properties are studied. The results show that the conversion of the array of the beam and the non-uniform structure can be realized by adjusting the parameters in the source plane. As the propagation distance of the TFCGSM beam increases, it rotates around the axis and increases the intensity of the array distribution. Surprisingly, the initial radius of curvature can cause the beam to rotate. The unique shape and properties of the TFCGSM beam create new possibilities for optical communication and enhanced optical functions.

Abstract:By using slowly-varying envelope approximation, a family of solutions of the paraxial wave equation are found in theory, which represents a new family of ultrashort pulsed beams called ultrashort pulsed complex argument Sinc-Gaussian beams. These pulsed beams with a certain frequency have a nearly complex argument Gaussian profile, a sinc function temporal shape. The ultrashort pulsed complex argument Sinc-Gaussian beams and their propagation properties in free space are studied detailedly, such as intensity on the axis, transversal intensity distribution of the pulsed beams, polarity reversal, pulse time delay, etc..

Abstract:We introduce, to the best of our knowledge, a new class of twisted partially coherent sources for producing rotating Gaussian array profiles. The general analytical formula for the cross-spectral density function of a beam generated by such a novel source propagating in free space is derived, and its propagation characteristics are analyzed. It is shown that both the irradiance profile of each element of the array and the degree of coherence rotate during propagation, but in opposite directions. Further, the twist effects of the spectral density and the degree of coherence are quantified. It is shown that the direction of rotation is changeable upon propagation. Our results may provide new insight into the twist phase and may be applied in optical trapping.

Abstract:We present a novel approach to generate Bessel-Gauss modes of arbitrary integer order and well-defined optical angular momentum in a gradient index medium of transverse parabolic profile. The propagation and coherence properties, as well as the quality factor, are studied using algebraic techniques that are widely used in quantum mechanics. It is found that imposing the well-defined optical angular momentum condition, the Lie group $SU(1,1)$ comes to light as a characteristic symmetry of the Bessel-Gauss beams.

Abstract:The presented paper points out that the ChG beam can be generated by using the graded phase mirror (GPM). The theory expressions of the amplitude and the phase of the ChG beams are derived, respectively. Subsequently, the phase function of the GPM is deduced, which is necessary to design the surface of the GPM. A procedure is proposed to design the geometrical parameters of the resonator to generate the desired ChG beam. The quality of the output beam can be nearly ideal due to the high selectivity of the GPM and the intracavity aperture. Furthermore, the thermal lensing and gain saturation are taken into accounts. Finally, the theory expression of the kurtosis at the waist plane is derived to point out that the profile of the ChG beams are platykurtic except for the case of b=0, which corresponds to the Gaussian beam.
