Abstract:Surface nitridation of titanium was induced by pulsed laser irradiation in nitrogen atmosphere. The nitridation layers were characterized by scanning electron microscope (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Raman spectroscopy. XRD results showed that the main phases of the nitridation layers were α-Ti and δ-TiN, with a small amount of α-Ti (N). With the increase of laser average power, δ-TiN and α-Ti(N) content in the nitridation layers increased. Correspondingly, the nitrogen content also increased. The hardness and Young's modulus of the nitridation layers were measured by nano-indentation with a load of 2 mN and found to be 11.5-15 GPa and 200-250 GPa, which were much higher than that of titanium.

Abstract:Surface modification is a promising technique to improve wear properties of titanium and titanium alloys by modifying either the surface composition or microstructure. Laser remelting and laser nitriding of commercial purity titanium were carried out under pure argon and pure nitrogen ambient, respectively. Characterization of the laser treated surface was done by optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), microhardness tester. During laser irradiation heating, Ti exhibits a height activity and combines with N in the atmosphere of pure nitrogen forming TiN and TiN0.3, whereas Ti only transform into martensitic Ti in pure argon. The Vickers microhardnesses are greatly improved by laser remelting and laser nitriding.

Abstract:Laser surface nitriding technique is successfully applied to improve the surface modification efficiency of titanium alloys. Moreover, adjustment of nitride layer thickness can be achieved by applying multi-pass laser surface nitriding. Mass transfer behavior of laser surface nitriding could be totally different from the steady-state gas nitriding processes because it involves rapid heating and cooling procedures for many times, which is systematically analyzed in this research by conducting different number of laser surface nitriding passes and in-situ laser quenching after laser surface nitriding experiment on commercial pure titanium TA2 alloy. Results indicate that the thickness of nitridation layer increases with the increase of nitriding passes. After three passes laser surface nitriding, the depth of nitridation region can reach to about 56 μm. During multi-pass laser surface nitriding process, the pre-formed TiN layer will be partially decomposed under the thermal impact of subsequent laser processing. The decomposed nitrogen will further diffuse deeply into the substrate along the nitrogen concentration gradient and combine with the nitrogen from the environment to continually offer the nitrogen source during the entire laser nitriding process with high processing efficiency.

Abstract:TiN layers were generated on titanium surface using laser gas alloying (LGA) method with the Q-switched YAG laser and XeCl excimer laser. The orientation of crystallization, morphology and degree of nitridation of TiN under different conditions such as different laser energy, different N2 gas pressure and different action pulse number were analyzed by using an X-ray diffractometer. The microstructures of TiN layers were observed by scanning electron microscopy. The mechanism of LGA was investigated. It was found that the LGA method also can be used to generate Mo2N layer on molybdenum.

Abstract:The Nd:YAG laser was used to treat TA 2 titanium in the nitrogen atmosphere .The macroscopic morphology , phase composition , microstructure , hardness , friction and wear properties of the laser nitriding layers on TA 2 under different processes were discussed .The results show that the nitriding layer and the matrix is metallurgical combined after laser surface nitriding , and the nitride layer microstructure is mainly composed of small , dendritic TiN .It is found that the laser discrete nitriding can significantly reduce the friction coefficient and improve the wear resistance .The higher distribution density of nitrided strengthening area , the smaller friction coefficient and better wear resistance can be obtained .The laser discrete nitriding can also improve the production efficiency and inhibit the formation of cracks .
Plasma Nitridation and Mechanical Properties of Pure Titanium Casts

Abstract:The surfaces of pure titanium casts were modified with plasma nitridation in NH3 environment.The impacts of surface modification conditions,including the pressure,sample temperature and nitridation time etc.,on the mechanical properties of the surfaces were studied.The microstructures and properties were characterized with X-ray diffraction(XRD),scanning electron microscopy(SEM) and conventional mechanical probes.The results show that the plasma nitridation significantly improves the properties of the Ti casts,and changes its stoichiometry.For instance,the modified Ti casts have much higher wear resistance,surface hardness,and corrosion resistance against the artificial saliva.And its color changed into dark-golden;the TiN,Ti2N and α-Ti(N) phases were observed in its surfaces.

Abstract:Advanced characterization techniques are utilized to investigate the effect of laser surface treatment on microstructural evolution of pure titanium (Ti). The results show that there are three distinctly different types of microstructure from surface to substrate in Ti samples, including phase transformation and solidification microstructure in zone I (melting zone); insufficient recrystallization grains with residual α martensitic plates in zone II (heat-affected zone, HAZ); fully recrystallization microstructure in zone III (base metal, BM). The hardness evolution profiles under different laser treatment parameters are similar. The highest hardness in MZ is ascribed to α plate, while the lowest hardness value in HAZ is due to the insufficiently recrystallized grains. The metallurgical process on the laser-modified Ti samples is systematically discussed in this work.

Abstract:A nitride layer can be formed on the surface of a titanium alloy during laser gas nitriding, to improve the surface hardness and wear resistance of the titanium alloy. Importantly, the nitride layer is influenced by the nitrogen ionization state (nitrogen molecules or nitrogen atoms and ions). No research reports exist on the nitrogen ionization state or the effect on the nitride layer during fiber laser nitriding of titanium alloys. Radiation images that were taken with a high-speed camera and emission spectra that were collected with a fiber spectrometer were used to study the nitrogen ionization state. To study the effect of nitrogen ionization state on the nitride layer, the surface nitrogen and oxygen content were measured with an electro-probe microanalyzer, and the surface morphology of the nitride layer was studied by optical and scanning electron microscopy. The experimental results showed that the laser power density was too low to induce nitrogen ionization during fiber laser gas nitriding of the Ti-6Al-4V alloy. The nitrogen molecules had a lower energy than the nitrogen plasma (nitrogen atoms and ions) and a slower reaction rate with the titanium alloy, which resulted in a low nitrogen content and a few defects in the nitride layer. The relationship between the oxidation and nitriding was competitive; that is, nitrogen and oxygen competed to react with the titanium alloy. As such, a low nitrogen content led to a high oxygen content, and the nitride surface was golden-yellow in color with black markings.

Abstract:This study aimed to further the understanding of open-atmosphere nitriding phenomena on a metal surface triggered by focused pulse Nd:YAG laser irradiation. This phenomenon produces a nitride layer of several micrometers on the Ti surface but not on other metal surfaces, such as Fe. In this study, a similar laser treatment was conducted on Ti, Fe, Zr, and Cu surfaces. The key material properties supporting the growth of the nitride layer were examined based on the surface analysis results. The results highlight the importance of the thermal conductivity of the metal substrate and the standard free energy of each metal nitride in laser nitriding phenomena. Thermal conductivity is related to the generation of the molten metal pool, which predominates the intake of nitrogen gas from the surrounding gas. For example, a Cu surface with a high thermal conductivity of approximately 4 × 10 2 W·m −1 ·K −1 scarcely takes in nitrogen. The standard free energy is important for the formation of nitride compounds during solidification. For instance, the nitrogen on the Fe surface was degassed immediately because of the high standard free energy of Fe-nitride (e.g., Fe 4 N with 3.8 kJ·mol −1 at 298 K); consequently, the nitrogen content was notably diminished. Open-atmosphere nitriding phenomena are complex; however, the findings from this study provide valuable insights into the process.

Abstract:Titanium is frequently adopted in laser-induced forward transfer (LIFT) due to its unique industrial advantages (low density, high specific strength and good corrosion resistance). To understand the LIFT process assisted with Ti films, topographies of on Ti films with a thickness 435 nm <= d <= 1250 nmirradiated by ultraviolet nanosecond laser pulses are investigated. Five different topographies (the pit, blister, bump, spray, and strip) are observed and classified, among which the pit, with a basin-like profile, is first addressed in this work. The probability distribution of these types with respect to laser fluence on 435 nm and 1250 nm Ti films is provided and an analytical model is developed to explain the driving mechanism of the ablation threshold and the formation of different topographies.
Formation of Titanium Nitride, Titanium Carbide, and Silicon Carbide Surfaces by High Power Femtosecond Laser Treatment

Abstract:Coatings based on titanium nitrides, titanium carbides and silicon carbides can optimize the surface properties of titanium or silicon for various applications ranging from biocompatibility to chemical stability and durability. Here, we investigated a high power (100 W) high pulse repetition rate femtosecond laser process (λ=1030 nm, τ=750 fs, f=1 MHz) for the treatment of titanium and silicon in atmospheres of argon, nitrogen, methane, ethene and acetylene. In a nitrogen atmosphere, a homogeneous coating of TiON is formed on titanium. In an ethene/argon atmosphere coatings of TiOC and SiC are formed on Ti and Si, respectively. The process allows a fast surface transformation with a process rate of 0.33 cm2 s-1 and a high spatial resolution below 0.5 mm with a minimal heat affected zone at the same time. In contrast to low repetition rate femtosecond laser processed samples, the surfaces are more robust against mechanical impact. At the same time, the surfaces reveal a distinct microstructure in comparison to coatings obtained by vapor deposition techniques.

Abstract:A self-consistent diffusion model has been employed to simulate the atomic nitrogen transport in titanium alloy with the coupling effect of both initial activated nitrogen concentration and high temperature gradient. Transport equations are solved through coupling the transient heat transfer equation and incorporating the surface physical phenomena in the governing equations as boundary conditions. For comparisons, laser gas nitriding of Ti6Al4V alloy has been performed by means of a pulsed Nd:YAG laser irradiation in a controlled nitrogen chamber. Results indicate that the simulated nitriding molten pool geometry and nitrogen concentration profiles are broadly consistent with the experimental results for various laser intensities and nitrogen pressures. Due to the combined driving of both concentration and temperature gradient, a rapid increase of nitrogen concentration profile during the heating stage is observed. While in the cooling stage, the redistribution of nitrogen in substrate and the local maximum of nitrogen close to the surface are mainly caused by the transient temperature gradient which is confirmed by both the experimental and simulated results. In addition, the influence of laser intensity on nitrogen transport is strongly related to the initial nitrogen concentration at surface. Especially, when the initial nitrogen concentration at surface approaches to the maximum concentration limit of nitrogen in titanium nitrided layer, slight drops of nitrogen concentration in molten zone are observed with the increase of laser intensity. This indicates that the earlier formed diffusion barrier due to the maximum concentration limit will impede the further penetration of atomic nitrogen and thus lead to the relatively lower concentration.

Abstract:Titanium dioxide (TiO2) has been a key material in a wide range of applications such as catalysis, energy harvesting, and antibacterial surfaces. Typically, different TiO2 phases are first synthesized and then coated onto the test parts. Here, the authors demonstrate a direct method for the formation of TiO2 nanostructures and patterns with rutile, anatase, and mixed phases by a controlled laser-assisted surface modification approach on additive manufacturing titanium parts. A tunable nanosecond fiber laser coupled to a galvo scanner was employed to regulate the laser material for a controlled and localized transformation process in an oxygen environment. The influence of processing conditions such as scanning speed, laser power, laser pulse duration, frequency, and gas flow rate on the selective formation of rutile, anatase, and mixed phases was studied. The structural evolutions and morphology have been investigated using different characterization techniques, including scanning electron microscopy and Raman spectroscopy methods. The main advantage of this laser-assisted process is its ability to create selective TiO2 phases on complex titanium parts such as implants.

Abstract:Manipulating materials at nanoscale is challenging but rewarding. Nanostructures exhibit some unique properties distinguished from macroscopic bulk materials, so fabrication of nanostructures on the material surface is beneficial to broaden their functional applications. In this study, by nanosecond pulse laser irradiation in nitrogen atmosphere, it was found that unique nanoporous structures could be formed on the Ti6Al4V surface. The effects of laser parameters including the laser power, overlap rate, scanning speed, and repetition frequency on the formation and evolution of the nanoporous structures were systematically investigated. By changing the laser parameters, the nanoporous structures with various porosities could be easily achieved on the Ti6Al4V surface. According to the structural evolution and chemical composition, the formation mechanism of the nanoporous structures was discussed. Furthermore, by characterizing the micro-mechanical properties and wettability, it was found that the surface with nanoporous structures exhibited similar surface hardness but improved tribological performances compared to the original Ti6Al4V surface, and the surface wettability could be tuned. This study provides a simple method for fabricating nanoporous structures on the Ti6Al4V surface, which would broaden its functional applications.

Abstract:Laser-induced periodic surface structure is a universal phenomenon observed when solid materials are irradiated with pulsed lasers. Typically, these structures are generated using Gaussian pulses. Here, we investigate the formation of periodic nanostructures on titanium nitride thin films using two different laser sources: Gaussian pulses and femtosecond pulse trains generated through a Fabry-Perot cavity. Our findings indicate that the formation of self-organized nanostructures on the thin films can occur through either laser-induced oxidation or laser ablation processes, depending on laser fluence, scanning speed, and pulse duration. Interestingly, when utilizing femtosecond pulse trains, we observe that the range of laser fluence thresholds for oxidative nanostructure formation is significantly wider compared to Gaussian pulses. To comprehend the underlying mechanisms driving these observations, we employ a two-temperature model to calculate the ultrafast dynamics of hot electrons when exposed to laser irradiation. Our results reveal that the initial sub-pulse generates a substantial population of hot electrons, exciting surface plasmons and resulting in the creation of a periodic energy distribution. Before these hot electrons can dissipate, subsequent sub-pulses reach the thin film, re-exciting a large number of hot electrons. Consequently, the periodic energy distribution persists for an extended duration, creating more favorable conditions for the formation of periodic oxidative nanostructures when using pulse trains. These findings contribute to a comprehensive understanding of the mechanisms involved in the formation of periodic nanostructures under femtosecond laser irradiation.

Abstract:This study reported on the formation of sub-5-mu m microstructures covered on titanium by cracks growth under 10-ns laser radiation at the wavelength of 532 nm and its induced light modification for production of nanostructures. The electric field intensity and laser power density absorbed by commercial pure titanium were computed to investigate the self-trapping introduced by cracks and the effect of surface morphology on laser propagation characteristics. It is found that nanostructures can form at the surface with the curvature radius below 20 mu m. Meanwhile, variable laser fluences were applied to explore the evolution of cracks on commercial pure titanium with or without melt as spot overlap number increased. Experimental study was first performed at the peak laser fluence of 1.063 J/cm(2) to investigate the microstructures induced only by cracks growth. The results demonstrated that angular microstructures with size between 1.68 mu m nd 4.74 mu m was obtained and no nanostructure covered. Then, at the peak laser fluence of 2.126 J/cm(2), there were some nanostructures covered on the melt induced curved microstructured surface. However, surface molten material submerged in the most of cracks at the spot overlap number of 744, where the old cracks disappeared. The results indicated that there was too much molten material and melting time at the peak laser fluence of 2.126 j/cm(2), which was not suitable for obtainment of perfect micro-nano structures. On this basis, peak laser fluence was reduced down to 1.595 J/cm(2) and the sharp sub-5 mu m microstructures with nanostructures covered was obtained at spot overlap number of 3720. Abstract:Near-threshold femtosecond laser surface treatment of titanium produces functional nanostructures, which has received much attention in applications and scientific researches. However, researches on the mechanism of near-threshold temporally-shaped femtosecond laser ablation of titanium are scarce, because the difficulty of investigating the modification mechanism of surface properties by sub-pulses below the ablation threshold. In this study, the double-pulse femtosecond laser ablation with various pulse separation was investigated. We found that the maximum ablation area appeared around 1 ps pulse separation at different fluences, and the ablation enhancement weakened with the increase of the fluence. The ultrafast pump–probe microscopy technique and ultrafast thermoelasticity model were used to investigate the mechanism. The result of pump–probe microscopy technique indicated that the enhancement of the area was caused by the decrease of transient reflectivity in the early stages which facilitated the subsequent sub-pulse energy absorption. The theoretical results indicate that the maximum ablation enhancement occurred at 1 ps, which is due to the combination of thermal and mechanical effects. The maximum of long axis diameter of periodic structure also appeared at 1 ps in multi-point processing. These findings have significant implications for the modulation of titanium surface nanostructures and providing theoretical support for processing.

In Situ Synthesis of Titanium Nickel Intermetallic Compounds Layer and TiN Coating by Laser Cladding

Abstract:Laser cladding,together with laser nitriding was used to synthesize a titanium nickel intermetallic compound layer on the nickel substrate and a TiN coating on the cladding layer. During the laser cladding, Ti and Ni powders were blown into the melting pool by a six-hole coaxial nozzle powder injection system. Exothermic reactions between Ti and Ni took place in the melting pool, and a cladding layer of titanium nickel intermetallic compounds was produced. Laser nitriding in a nitrogen-rich atmosphere followed the production of the cladding layer, and formed a golden yellow TiN layer over it. An optical and a scanning electron microscope were used to investigate the microstructures and measure the thicknesses of the cladding layer and the TiN layer. Phase identification was carried out by XRD. For the nitriding sample, the microhardness profile of the clad layer was tested. The optimal process parameters of the in situ synthesis of titanium nickel intermetallic compounds were obtained.

Abstract:The evolution mechanisms of phase, microstructure and vacuum tribological properties for Ti-20Zr-6.5Al-4V under different laser beam diameters have been investigated by using laser surface nitriding (LSN). Results indicate that all the LSN samples are mainly composed of α phase and Ti(Zr)N phase, besides, Ti(Zr)N 0.3 phase can also be obtained, which is based on a change in the ratio of liquefied n Ti(Zr) /n N . With the laser beam diameter decreasing from 3 to 1 mm, the thickness and density of nitride layer increase significantly, which contribute to the increased energy input density. EPMA results indicate that the nitrides mainly exist in the form of Ti(Zr) x N y , and the distribution transformation of Al and V elements has also been analyzed. As the laser beam diameter decreases, the coefficient of friction decreases, and the sample with 1 mm laser beam diameter display the lowest coefficient of friction (∼0.333). Also, the wear volume and wear rate of the LSN sample with 1 mm laser beam diameter are the smallest, which are both reduced by about 40% compared with the original sample. After analysis, the wear pattern of the LSN samples can be confirmed as the composite of adhesive wear and abrasive wear. Nitride dendrites can form a support skeleton between the wear surface and friction pair, which can significantly reduce the wear of LSN sample surface. The results of this work prove the feasibility of improving the surface wear resistance of Ti-20Zr-6.5Al-4V by LSN.
