Abstract:Optical microcavities have been paid enormous attentions as a basic integrated element in photonic devices including micromodulators, microfilters, and microsensors. In particular, the microcavities that can produce unidirectional and single-mode lasing emissions are greatly demanded to meet the challenge of integrating high-efficiency and high-sensitivity optical functional systems. Herein, a three-dimensional polymer microlaser composed of stacked circular-ring-shaped and spiral-ring-shaped microcavities is fabricated directly on a narrow bandpass filter substrate by the femtosecond laser processing technique. The on-chip polymer microlaser provides a room-temperature, low-threshold, unidirectional, and single-mode laser output, resulting from the coupling between the two stacked microcavities. The fabrication of the on-chip low-threshold polymer microlaser opens up a possibility toward the integration of a variety of polymer microcavities for organic optoelectronic devices.

Abstract:We study the stimulated Raman emission of a high-Q polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS)-coated silica microsphere on a silicon chip. In this hybrid structure, as the thickness of the PDMS coating increases, the spatial distribution of the whispering gallery modes moves inside the PDMS layer, and the light emission switches from silica Raman lasing to PDMS Raman lasing. The Raman shift of the PDMS Raman laser is measured at 2900 cm(-1), corresponding to the strongest Raman fingerprint of bulk PDMS material. The threshold for this PDMS Raman lasing is demonstrated to be as low as 1.3 mW. This type of Raman emission from a surface-coated high-Q microcavity not only provides a route for extending lasing wavelengths, but also shows potential for detecting specific analytes.
Unidirectional Lasing from A Spiral-Shaped Microcavity of Dye-Doped Polymers

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrate fabrication of a spiral-shaped polymer microdisk cavity by femtosecond laser direct writing via two-photon polymerization of dye-doped resins. This spiral microresonator supports highly directional emission from the notch with a high-Q factor exceeding 1.6 x 10(3) and a low lasing threshold at room temperature. Our numerical simulation results reveal that clockwise propagating high-Q whispering gallery-like modes may couple to the counterclockwise modes and give the directional output. Benefiting from the low cost and good chemical compatibility of polymer materials, the fabrication of such spiral-shaped polymer microlasers with high-Q and unidirectional emission holds great potentials for use as elements of integrated organic optoelectronic devices.

Abstract:We propose a simple technique to form miniature optical circuits using microfibers embedded into a low refractive index matrix. As an example we demonstrate a silica microfiber knot resonator embedded in a fluoroacrylate polymer. Fabrication issues and initial experimental results are reported. We also present simulations aimed at understanding the current limitations to the Q-factor and the role of the embedding polymer refractive index on the Q-factor of future resonators. It is anticipated that using commercially available polymers high Q-factor resonators with radii as small as 100 micrometers can be made by this technique.

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrate a hybrid structure microlaser on chip with a single CdSe nanowire attached to a high-Q silica microdisk cavity at room temperature. When pumped by a 532 nm pulse laser, both single-longitudinal mode and multi-longitudinal mode lasers with linewidth of 0.18 nm are obtained from the hybrid structure with a 58-mu m-diameter microdisk and a 250-nm diameter nanowire. Abstract:By using a self-assembly method, SU-8 whispering gallery mode optical microcavities with an ultra-smooth surface (σ < 0.6 nm) and high-Q factors (∼104) are fabricated. As an application of the microcavities, we demonstrate a polydimethylsiloxane packaged temperature sensor with high sensitivity (120 pm per °C) and long-term stability (over one year). These results illustrate broad application potential in ultrasensitive sensors and microlasers.
Fabrication of Optical Cavities with Femtosecond Laser Pulses

Abstract:We report on fabrication of three-dimensional (3D) high-quality (Q) whispering-gallery-mode microcavities by femtosecond laser micromachining. The main fabrication procedures include the formation of on-chip freestanding microdisk through selective material removal by femtosecond laser pulses, followed by surface smoothing processes (CO2 laser reflow for amorphous glass and focused ion beam (FIB) sidewall milling for crystalline materials) to improve the Q factors. Fused silica microcavities with 3D geometries are demonstrated with Q factors exceeding 106. A microcavity laser based on Nd:glass has been fabricated, showing a threshold as low as 69μW via free space continuous-wave optical excitation at the room temperature. CaF2 crystalline microcavities with Q factor of ~4.2×104 have also been demonstrated. This technique allows us to fabricate 3D high-Q microcavities in various transparent materials such as glass and crystals, which will benefit a broad spectrum of applications such as nonlinear optics, quantum optics, and bio-sensing.

Abstract:We have demonstrated a chip-based Raman laser by using a silica microdisk resonator with an intrinsic optical Q-factor of 1.5×10 7 . The achieved lasing threshold is as low as 3.9 mw with a conversion efficiency of 7.5%.

Abstract:Raman-based technologies have enabled many ground-breaking scientific discoveries related to surface science, single molecule chemistry and biology. For example, researchers have identified surface bound molecules by their Raman vibrational modes and demonstrated polarization-dependent Raman gain. However, a surface constrained Raman laser has yet to be demonstrated because of the challenges associated with achieving a sufficiently high photon population located at a surface to transition from spontaneous to stimulated Raman scattering. Here, advances in surface chemistry and in integrated photonics are combined to demonstrate lasing based on surface stimulated Raman scattering (SSRS). By creating an oriented, constrained Si-O-Si monolayer on the surface of integrated silica optical microresonators, the requisite conditions for SSRS are achieved with low threshold powers (200microW). The expected polarization-dependence of the SSRS due to the orientation of the Si-O-Si bond is observed. Due to the ordered monolayer, the Raman lasing efficiency is improved from ~5% to over 40%.

Femtosecond Laser Processing of Microcavity Lasers

Abstract:In this paper, we reviewed the fabrications of functional microcavity lasers in soft materials such as polymer and protein by femtosecond laser processing. High-quality (Q) microdisks with a laser dye (Rhodamine B, RhB) acting as gain medium were fabricated that produced whispering-gallery-mode (WGM) lasing output. We also obtained unidirectional lasing output with a low lasing threshold in a deformed spiral microcavity at room temperature. Photonic-molecule (PM) microlasers were prepared to investigate the interaction and coupling effects of different cavities, and it was found that the distance between the two disks plays an important role in the lasing behaviors. Single-mode lasing was realized from a stacked PM microlaser through Vernier effect. Furthermore we adopted the biocompatible materials, RhB-doped proteins as a host material and fabricated a three-dimensional (3D) WGM microlaser, which operated well both in air and aqueous environment. The sensing of the protein microlasers to Na2SO4 concentration was investigated. Our results of fabricating high-Q microlasers with different materials reveal the potential applications of femtosecond laser processing in the areas of integrated optoelectronic and ultrahigh sensitive bio-sensing devices.

Abstract:We fabricate a fiber coupled ultrahigh-Q resonator from a {\mu}droplet per se; and experimentally measure stimulated Raman emission showing itself at a 160{\mu}W threshold. We observe Raman-laser lines that agree with their related calculated molecular-vibrations, as well as with a control-group experiment that uses a Raman-spectrometer. Yet, unlike spectrometers where emission is spontaneous and less directional, our droplet emitter is stimulated, single-mode-fiber coupled, resonantly enhanced with Q of 250 million, confined to a 23 um3 mode volume and has 7 orders of magnitude higher power.

Abstract:We experimentally report high-Q asymmetric polymer microcavities with highly directional coupling, which are directly written by two-photon polymerization of zirconium/silicon hybrid sol-gel. Benefiting from the high spatial resolution and three-dimensional nature of this direct laser writing technique, the polymer microcavities not only have the designed boundary shapes that are required for highly directional emission but also possess high-Q factors exceeding 10(5) that approach the polymer absorption limit. The free-space coupling fractional dip, dependent on the incident far-field direction, is used here to characterize the emission properties by the mutual correlation between the coupling and the directional emission. These high-performance polymer microcavities hold great potential in the fields of low-threshold microlasing and high-sensitivity optical biosensing. (C) 2013 AIP Publishing LLC.

Abstract:We report Raman lasing and the optical analog of electromagnetically-induced-transparency (EIT) in a whispering-gallerymode (WGM) microtoroid resonator embedded in a low refractive index polymer matrix together with a tapered fiber coupler. The Raman laser supports both single and multimode operation with low power thresholds. Observations of Fano and EIT-like pheonomena in a packaged microresonator will enable high resolution sensors and can be used in networks where slow light process is needed. These results open the way for portable, robust, and stable WGM microlasers and laserbased sensors for applications in various environments.

Abstract:Synthetic single-crystal diamond has recently emerged as a promising platform for Raman lasers at exotic wavelengths due to its giant Raman shift, large transparency window and excellent thermal properties yielding a greatly enhanced figure-of-merit compared to conventional materials. To date, diamond Raman lasers have been realized using bulk plates placed inside macroscopic cavities, requiring careful alignment and resulting in high threshold powers (~W-kW). Here we demonstrate an on-chip Raman laser based on fully-integrated, high quality-factor, diamond racetrack micro-resonators embedded in silica. Pumping at telecom wavelengths, we show Stokes output discretely tunable over a ~100nm bandwidth around 2-{\mu}m with output powers >250 {\mu}W, extending the functionality of diamond Raman lasers to an interesting wavelength range at the edge of the mid-infrared spectrum. Continuous-wave operation with only ~85 mW pump threshold power in the feeding waveguide is demonstrated along with continuous, mode-hop-free tuning over ~7.5 GHz in a compact, integrated-optics platform.

Abstract:A single frequency erbium-doped fiber laser with an on-chip high-Q silicon nitride (Si 3 N 4 ) microring cavity is demonstrated. The laser linear cavity is composed of a microring with a Q of up to 2.5×10 5 and a free spectral range (FSR) of 2 nm, a 12 cm erbium-doped fiber and a fiber Bragg grating (FBG). The linewidth of 8 kHz is achieved.
Efficient Raman lasing and Raman-Kerr interaction in an integrated silicon carbide platform

Abstract:Implementing stimulated Raman scattering in a low-loss microresonator could lead to Raman lasing. Here, we report the demonstration of an efficient Raman laser with $>50 \%$ power efficiency in an integrated silicon carbide platform for the first time. By fine tuning the free spectral range (FSR) of 43-$\mu$m-radius silicon carbide microresonators, the Stokes resonance corresponding to the dominant Raman shift of $777\ \text{cm}^{-1}$ ($23.3$ THz) is aligned to the center of the Raman gain spectrum, resulting in a low power threshold of $2.5$ mW. The peak Raman gain coefficient is estimated to be ($0.75 \pm 0.15) \ \text{cm}/\text{GW}$ in the 1550 nm band, with an approximate full width at half maximum of ($120 \pm 30$) GHz. In addition, the microresonator is designed to exhibit normal dispersion at the pump wavelength near 1550 nm while possessing anomalous dispersion at the first Stokes near 1760 nm. At high enough input powers, a Kerr microcomb is generated by the Stokes signal acting as the secondary pump, which then mixes with the pump laser through four-wave mixing to attain a wider spectral coverage. Furthermore, cascaded Raman lasing and occurrence of multiple Raman shifts, including $204\ \text{cm}^{-1}$ ($6.1$ THz) and $266\ \text{cm}^{-1}$ ($8.0$ THz) transitions, are also observed. Finally, we show that the Stokes Raman could also help broaden the spectrum in a Kerr microcomb which has anomalous dispersion at the pump wavelength. Our example of a 100-GHz-FSR microcomb has a wavelength span from 1200 nm to 1900 nm with 300 mW on-chip power.

Abstract:We demonstrate that high-Q polymer whispering gallery microcavities can be directly written by the two-photon polymerization of zirconium/silicon hybrid sol-gel, benefiting from the high spatial resolution and three-dimensional nature of this direct laser writing technique. The quality factors of the fabricated whispering gallery microcavities are up to 1.48×105 limited by the material absorption. The surface roughness is less than 12 nm. This opens the way to fabricate intricate three-dimensional microcavities for the fundamental and applied physics research based on optical resonators.
A Coupled Cavity Micro Fluidic Dye Ring Laser

Abstract:We present a laterally emitting, coupled cavity micro fluidic dye ring laser, suitable for integration into lab-on-a-chip micro systems. The micro-fluidic laser has been successfully designed, fabricated, characterized and modelled. The resonator is formed by a micro-fluidic channel bounded by two isosceles triangle mirrors. The micro-fluidic laser structure is defined using photo lithography in 10 microns thick SU-8 polymer on a glass substrate. The micro fluidic channel is sealed by a glass lid, using PMMA adhesive bonding. The laser is characterized using the laser dye Rhodamine 6G dissolved in ethanol or ethylene glycol as the active gain medium, which is pumped through the micro-fluidic channel and laser resonator. The dye laser is optically pumped normal to the chip plane at 532 nm by a pulsed, frequency doubled Nd:YAG laser and lasing is observed with a threshold pump pulse energy flux of around 55 micro-Joule/square-milimeter. The lasing is multi-mode, and the laser has switchable output coupling into an integrated polymer planar waveguide. Tuning of the lasing wavelength is feasible by changing the dye/solvent properties.
