Abstract:In this review, we introduce some chip-based waveguide biosensing and imaging techniques, which significantly reduce the complexity of the entire system. These techniques use a well-confined evanescent field to interact with the surrounding materials and achieve high sensitivity sensing and high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) super-resolution imaging. The fabrication process of these chips is simple and compatible with conventional semiconductor fabrication methods, allowing high-yield production. Combined with recently developed chip-based light sources, these techniques offer the possibility of biosensing and super-resolution imaging based on integrated circuits.

Abstract:Silicon photonic biosensors based on cascaded resonators employing the Vernier effect are shown to be capable of greatly increasing the sensitivity. Two implementation schemes are presented, one using two cascaded ring resonators with a broadband light source, and the other by cascading a Fabry-Perot laser with a silicon ring resonator. Simple intensity interrogation schemes are developed to advance the planar waveguide sensor technology towards low-cost practical applications.

Abstract:Summary form only given. Optical waveguide sensors based on silicon-on-insulator (SOI) nanowire have received great interest due to their potential applications in many fields including bacteria and virus detection, medical diagnostics, food quality control, environment monitoring, and drug development. Various types of SOI sensors have been developed, including Mach-Zehnder interferometer, microdisks and microring resonators. High-sensitivity sensors based on cascaded double-ring resonators and a Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI) cascaded with a microring resonator employing Vernier effect have recently been proposed and experimentally demonstrated. Simple and low-cost intensity interrogation can be employed without using a high resolution spectrometer or a narrow line-width tunable laser. Label-free detection capability of these two types of SOI sensors have also been demonstrated. This talk reviews our work on the design, fabrication and measurement of SOI nanowire based high-sensitivity biosensors employing Vernier effect. Biosensing experiments using cascaded double-ring sensor and Mach-Zehnder-ring sensor integrated with microfluidic channels are also presented.

Abstract:A highly sensitive optical waveguide sensor based on simple intensity interrogation with a broadband light source is proposed and investigated. It consists of two cascaded microring resonators with the same or slightly different free spectral ranges. The variation of the refractive index of the analyte sample results in a large shift in the envelope function of the transmission peaks of the sensor, and, consequently, a large change in the transmitted power. The low-cost sensing scheme can achieve an ultrahigh sensitivity of 2 x 10(4) dB/RIU. Experimental results on the intensity interrogated double-ring sensor using a broadband source are presented, demonstrating its operation principle and potential for low-cost practical applications. Abstract:A plasmon waveguide resonance (PWR) sensing structure was presented based on composite waveguide layer in this article. This composite layer based PWR (CLPWR) could provide stronger evanescent electric field and sharper resonance curve than surface plasmon resonance (SPR). Owing to these, the CLPWR sensor could provide up to 20 times higher resolution than the conventional SPR technology under ideal conditions. The vacuum coating techniques and optimal optical arrangements were developed for the realization of CLPWR sensor, and the residual analysis was introduced to quantify the effect of experimental system noise on measurement accuracy. In the label free biosensing experiment, it was demonstrated that the CLPWR sensor could provide more accurate measurement results than conventional SPR sensor for label free biomolecular interaction analysis in complex media.

Abstract:Optical waveguide sensors based on cascaded double-ring resonators are analyzed theoretically and experimentally, for both wavelength interrogation and intensity interrogation methods. It is shown that for the wavelength interrogation, the sensitivity can be increased by over three orders of magnitude by combining the intensity ratio detection of two central peaks, compared with the simple digital operation mode of the central peak wavelength shift detection of the transmission spectrum. While the detection limit of the wavelength interrogation method is several times smaller than that of intensity interrogation method, the latter has advantages of simplicity and low cost which can outweigh the sensitivity reduction for many practical applications. Experimental results showed good agreements with the theoretical analysis.
An Integrated Optical Sensor Based on Cascaded Polarization Convertor and Slot Waveguide Microring Resonator

Abstract:A highly sensitive integrated optical sensor based on cascaded polarization convertor and slot waveguide microring resonator is proposed. The structure consists of an edge coupler, slot waveguide microring resonators and a reflective polarization converter. One polarization input light of the through-port of the slot waveguide microring resonator is converted into the other polarization mode after passing through the reflective polarization converter, and is coupled into slot waveguide microring resonators again. The output light of the sensor is the cascaded through-port spectrum of two different polarizations. The power conversion efficiency of the reflective polarization converter is optimized to 80%. The free spectrum ranges of the two polarization modes are different to produce the Vernier effect. Thus, the sensitivity of the sensor increases dramatically. The theoretical sensitivity of our system is 21150 nm/ Refractive-Index-Unit (RIU) with the measurement range of 0.0007 RIU. This structure has great potential in biological recognition and chemical analysis.

Abstract:A highly sensitive integrated optical biosensor based on the cascade of a Fabry-Perot cavity laser and a microring resonator is investigated theoretically and experimentally. The free spectral ranges of the microring and the laser cavity are designed to be about the same in order to apply intensity interrogation. The variation of the refractive index of the fluidic sample results in a large shift in the envelope function of the total transmission spectrum of the sensor, and consequently, a large change in the transmitted power. The simple light-source-integrated sensing scheme achieved a high sensitivity of 1000 dB/RIU in the preliminary experiment, demonstrating its principle and potential for low-cost practical applications.

Abstract:Optical waveguide biosensors based on silicon-on-insulator (SOI) have been extensively investigated owing to its various advantages and many potential applications. In this article, we demonstrate a novel highly sensitive biosensor based on cascaded Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI) and ring resonator with the Vernier effect using wavelength interrogation. The experimental results show that the sensitivity reached 1,960 nm/RIU and 19,100 nm/RIU for sensors based on MZI alone and cascaded MZI-ring with Vernier effect, respectively. A biosensing application was also demonstrated by monitoring the interaction between goat and antigoat immunoglobulin G (IgG) pairs. This integrated high sensitivity biosensor has great potential for medical diagnostic applications.

Abstract:We demonstrate a temperature-insensitive waveguide sensor based on a silicon-on-insulator platform. The sensor consists of a ring resonator and a Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MM). A free spectral range of the sensing ring is designed to be slightly different from that of the MZI; hence, the Vernier effect can be employed to improve sensitivity. By optimizing structural parameters of the MZI, the envelope peak position of a cascaded transmission spectrum can be immune to the temperature variation, and only dependent on analyte change in the sensing area. The experimental results show that bulk refractive index (RI) sensitivity of the proposed sensor is 3552 nm/RI unit, while its temperature sensitivity is less than 4 pm/K, which is two orders of magnitude smaller than the conventional cascaded sensor structure without temperature compensation. The proposed temperature-insensitive waveguide sensor does not need polymer cladding or extra thermal stabilization, making it more robust in practical applications. Abstract:A high-performance bi-reflection surface plasmon resonance waveguide sensor based on SiON was proposed. The thickness of Ag is optimized. The detection limit and the sensitivity are improved at the expense of loss using two planar reflection surfaces. A sensitivity of 103.8degree/RIU or 2.86x10(4)dB/RIU as well as a refractive index variation of 1x10(-5)RIU were measured.
