Abstract:A highly-sensitive integrated optical biosensor based on two cascaded micro-rings resonator (MRR) is investigated theoretically and experimentally. The free spectral ranges (FSRs) of two cascaded micro-rings are designed to be slightly different in order to generate Vernier effect. A preliminary investigation of our sensor with a Q factor of 2×104 using different ethanol concentrations shows that the Vernier effect can improve the sensitivity to 1300nm per refractive index unit (RIU), compared to 62nm/RIU for a single ring sensor. The sensor also has a large measurement range of refractive index change up to 1.15×10−2 RIU. It can be useful for low-cost and highly-sensitive optical biosensor system.

Abstract:We report the latest experimental results of cascaded double ring sensor. To improve the sensitivity, nanowire waveguide sensor operating in TM polarization is designed and fabricated, with the help of the e-beam lithography system. The measured transmission spectrum shows good agreement with theoretical analysis.

Abstract:High-sensitivity optical sensors based on the cascaded reflective MZIs and the microring resonators are investigated theoretically and experimentally. The free spectral ranges of the microring and the reflective MZI are designed to be similar in order to produce Vernier effect. A high sensitivity of 1892dB/RIU of the optical sensor was achieved for the intensity interrogation. The measurement average power shows 13 dB increment comparing to that of the traditional two cascaded microring resonators. It’s meaningful for the realization of the low-cost portable systems and application in biochemical sensing.

Abstract:Silicon photonic biosensors based on cascaded resonators employing the Vernier effect are shown to be capable of greatly increasing the sensitivity. Two implementation schemes are presented, one using two cascaded ring resonators with a broadband light source, and the other by cascading a Fabry-Perot laser with a silicon ring resonator. Simple intensity interrogation schemes are developed to advance the planar waveguide sensor technology towards low-cost practical applications.

Abstract:Although the cascaded double ring sensor can improve the sensitivity due to the difference between the radii of the reference ring and the sensing ring to produce Vernier effect, a large bandwidth spectrometer or a large tunable range laser is required for the wavelength interrogation. In this paper, the cascaded double ring senor based on silicon on insulator (SOI) with thermo-optical tuning for refractive index sensing is investigated. The peak wavelength shift of the transmission envelope can be converted into the electric power change of the micro-heater. The sensitivity reaches 33.703×103 mW/RIU by fitting Gaussian function to the spectral envelope for the wavelength interrogation with 7.9 nm wavelength measurement range.

Abstract:We demonstrate a temperature-insensitive waveguide sensor based on a silicon-on-insulator platform. The sensor consists of a ring resonator and a Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MM). A free spectral range of the sensing ring is designed to be slightly different from that of the MZI; hence, the Vernier effect can be employed to improve sensitivity. By optimizing structural parameters of the MZI, the envelope peak position of a cascaded transmission spectrum can be immune to the temperature variation, and only dependent on analyte change in the sensing area. The experimental results show that bulk refractive index (RI) sensitivity of the proposed sensor is 3552 nm/RI unit, while its temperature sensitivity is less than 4 pm/K, which is two orders of magnitude smaller than the conventional cascaded sensor structure without temperature compensation. The proposed temperature-insensitive waveguide sensor does not need polymer cladding or extra thermal stabilization, making it more robust in practical applications. Abstract:A highly sensitive optical waveguide sensor based on simple intensity interrogation with a broadband light source is proposed and investigated. It consists of two cascaded microring resonators with the same or slightly different free spectral ranges. The variation of the refractive index of the analyte sample results in a large shift in the envelope function of the transmission peaks of the sensor, and, consequently, a large change in the transmitted power. The low-cost sensing scheme can achieve an ultrahigh sensitivity of 2 x 10(4) dB/RIU. Experimental results on the intensity interrogated double-ring sensor using a broadband source are presented, demonstrating its operation principle and potential for low-cost practical applications. Abstract:A highly sensitive integrated optical sensor based on cascaded polarization convertor and slot waveguide microring resonator is proposed. The structure consists of an edge coupler, slot waveguide microring resonators and a reflective polarization converter. One polarization input light of the through-port of the slot waveguide microring resonator is converted into the other polarization mode after passing through the reflective polarization converter, and is coupled into slot waveguide microring resonators again. The output light of the sensor is the cascaded through-port spectrum of two different polarizations. The power conversion efficiency of the reflective polarization converter is optimized to 80%. The free spectrum ranges of the two polarization modes are different to produce the Vernier effect. Thus, the sensitivity of the sensor increases dramatically. The theoretical sensitivity of our system is 21150 nm/ Refractive-Index-Unit (RIU) with the measurement range of 0.0007 RIU. This structure has great potential in biological recognition and chemical analysis.

Abstract:In this paper, a thermo-optic tuning optical waveguide sensor system based on a cascaded double micro-ring resonator is investigated. The system consists of a micro-ring resonator with the microheater as a reference ring and a micro-ring resonator with removing the upper cladding layers as a sensing ring, combined with a microfluidic control. The refractive index change of the sample is measured by the electric power change of the microheater. The experimental results show that the sensitivity of the thermo-optic tuning is 34.231 W/RIU (refractive index units), and the measurement range is 4.325 x 10(-3)RIU, almost eight times larger than that of the cascaded double micro-ring resonator without thermo-optic tuning for the intensity interrogation.

Abstract:Based on the Vernier effect of the cascaded double ring resonator(CDRR) sensor,a sensor consisting of a microfluidic control system,a sensing ring,and a reference ring with a micro-heater for thermal tuning is proposed in this paper.In wavelength interrogation,a broadband spectrometer or a large tunable range laser is not required.The shift of the output spectrum caused by the refractive index change of the sample is converted into the change of the electric power by the thermal tuning heater.Due to the Vernier effect,the sensitivity of the sensor is 20 times higher than that of the single ring.The spectral envelope of the thermal-optic tuning of the sensor was fitted by a Gaussian function in the wavelength range of8 nm.The experimental results showed that the sensitivity was 33.703 W/RIU,and the limit of detection was 1.34×10-5 RIU.

Abstract:We demonstrate a novel, to the best of our knowledge, temperature-insensitive optical sensor based on two cascaded identical microring resonators (CIMRR) in this Letter. The structural parameters of the reference ring and sensing ring are designed to be identical. The upper cladding in the sensing windows of the two rings is removed. With different microfluidic channels, the reference ring and sensing ring are exposed to the reference solution and reagent sample, respectively. For wavelength interrogation experiments in the transmission spectrum contrast ratio and low-cost intensity interrogation experiments, the sensitivities of refractive index (RI) sensing are 3402.4 dB/RIU and 1087.3 dB/RIU, respectively, while the temperature sensitivities are as low as 0.023 dB/K and 0.0124 dB/K, respectively. Abstract:In this paper, we compare the sensing sensitivity, the stability and the temperature sensitivity of the micro-ring resonator optical sensor based on silicon waveguide and silicon nitride waveguide. For the silicon waveguide and silicon nitride waveguide single ring, the sensing sensitivities are 1113nm/RIU and 182.64nm/RIU, the resonance wavelength variations are ±12.5pm and ±7.5pm in an hour testing at the ambient temperature and the temperature sensitivities are 0.038nm/K and 0.018nm/K, respectively. . The sensing sensitivity can be improved to 6080.6nm/RIU by cascaded double silicon nitride waveguide rings to produce Vernier effect.
