Abstract:We demonstrate a refractive index (RI) sensor based on semiconductor nanowire lasers. It is shown that the TE01 mode is responsible for lasing and sensing with the lasing threshold of 3 μJ/mm2 and the lasing peak width as narrow as 0.22 nm. A RI sensitivity of 21.2 nm/RIU (refractive index units), a figure of merit of approximately 100, and an RI detection limit of 1.4×10−3 RIU are achieved.

Abstract:A highly sensitive integrated optical biosensor based on the cascade of a Fabry-Perot cavity laser and a microring resonator is investigated theoretically and experimentally. The free spectral ranges of the microring and the laser cavity are designed to be about the same in order to apply intensity interrogation. The variation of the refractive index of the fluidic sample results in a large shift in the envelope function of the total transmission spectrum of the sensor, and consequently, a large change in the transmitted power. The simple light-source-integrated sensing scheme achieved a high sensitivity of 1000 dB/RIU in the preliminary experiment, demonstrating its principle and potential for low-cost practical applications.

Abstract:A subnanometer resolution displacement sensor based on a grating interferometric cavity with intensity compensation and phase modulation is proposed and experimentally demonstrated in this paper. The grating interferometric cavity is composed of a frequency-stabilized laser source, a diffraction grating, and a mirror. To realize a subnanometer resolution, the intensity compensation and phase modulation technique are introduced, which are achieved by an intensity compensation light path, three closed placed photodetectors, a processing circuit and a piezoelectric ceramic transducer, and a lock-in amplifier. The intensity compensation technique can improve the stability of the output intensity signal greatly while the phase modulation technique can increase the signal-to-noise ratio dramatically. The detected signal is intensity modulated and processed by a particular arithmetic circuit. Experimental results indicate that the sensitivity of this displacement sensor is 44.75 mV/nm and the highest resolution can reach 0.017 nm, which is 27 times better than the one without intensity compensation and phase modulation. As a high-performance sensor with immunity to electromagnetic interference, this displacement sensor has potential to be used in nanoscience and technology.

Abstract:A highly-sensitive integrated optical biosensor based on two cascaded micro-rings resonator (MRR) is investigated theoretically and experimentally. The free spectral ranges (FSRs) of two cascaded micro-rings are designed to be slightly different in order to generate Vernier effect. A preliminary investigation of our sensor with a Q factor of 2×104 using different ethanol concentrations shows that the Vernier effect can improve the sensitivity to 1300nm per refractive index unit (RIU), compared to 62nm/RIU for a single ring sensor. The sensor also has a large measurement range of refractive index change up to 1.15×10−2 RIU. It can be useful for low-cost and highly-sensitive optical biosensor system.

Abstract:Silicon photonic biosensors based on cascaded resonators employing the Vernier effect are shown to be capable of greatly increasing the sensitivity. Two implementation schemes are presented, one using two cascaded ring resonators with a broadband light source, and the other by cascading a Fabry-Perot laser with a silicon ring resonator. Simple intensity interrogation schemes are developed to advance the planar waveguide sensor technology towards low-cost practical applications.

Abstract:Novel design concepts, simulations and experimental results on semiconductor lasers and integrated photonic devices are presented, for both telecom and biomedical applications. It is shown that the Vernier effect can be used to increase the tuning range of a digitally wavelength-switchable semiconductor laser, and to increase the sensitivity of passive and active waveguide sensors. The wavelength switchable laser based on V-coupled cavity has a large tolerance on the accuracy of the setting current. For the middle 50% of the current range corresponding to a wavelength channel, the wavelength varies by only ±0.01nm from the set value for 0.8nm channel spacing and the SMSR is maintained above 38dB. Wavelength switching over 8 consecutive channels is experimentally demonstrated using a single electrode control. The wavelength shift sensitivity of a waveguide sensor based on two cascaded microring resonators with Vernier effect can reach 1300nm/RIU, over an order of magnitude higher than a single ring sensor. A monolithic integrated intracavity biosensor based on V-coupled cavity laser is also proposed and analyzed. By simply detecting the power ratio of two output ports, a refractive index sensitivity in the order of 10-8 RIU can be achieved thanks to the intracavity sensing mechanism and the Vernier effect.

Abstract:In this paper, a novel high-sensitivity optical sensor based on cascaded two Fabry-Perot interferometers (FPIs) has been investigated theoretically and experimentally. In order to improve the sensitivity, the two FP interferometers were designed with slightly different free spectrum ranges (FSRs) to produce Vernier effect. The experimental results showed that the sensitivity of the sensor is 23,794.6 nm/RIU for the wavelength interrogation and 4602.3 dB/RIU for the intensity interrogation, much higher than that of the conventional sensors for the bulk refractive index (RI) sensing. Finally, the reaction between Streptomycin monoclonal antibody and Streptomycin-BSA was measured, showing a great potential for low-cost and portable systems in biochemical sensing.

Abstract:Single silicon nanobeam photonic crystal cavity based sensors are systematically analyzed and designed. By using perturbation theory and numerical simulations, both dielectric-mode and air-mode cavities are extensively investigated in terms of sensitivity (S), figure of merit (FOM), detection limit (DL), footprint size, and coupling scheme. The analytical study reveals a sensitivity limit of 1176 nm/RIU and a maximum figure of merit of 5070 for nanobeam cavity based sensors, due to the absorption of light near 1550 nm wavelength. when water is used as the carrier fluid. Design of high FOM (> 4800) nanobeam cavities is demonstrated with S of 291 and 232 nm/RIU for air modes and dielectric modes, respectively. The calculation results indicate that on a 220-nm-thick-silicon SOI platform, it is possible to design a nanobeam cavity based biosensor with DL on the order of 4 × 10-6 RIU, insertion loss of -30 dB, and cavity length less than 40a (a is the lattice constant). To approach the absorption bounded DL, the presented design is adequate when analyte absorption dominates the loss, regardless if it is for dielectric modes or air modes. These results would be conducive to clarification of the confusion on the priority of air mode and dielectric mode in designing nanobeam cavities based sensors, as well as recent considerable efforts to maximize Sand FOM.

Abstract:Summary form only given. Optical waveguide sensors based on silicon-on-insulator (SOI) nanowire have received great interest due to their potential applications in many fields including bacteria and virus detection, medical diagnostics, food quality control, environment monitoring, and drug development. Various types of SOI sensors have been developed, including Mach-Zehnder interferometer, microdisks and microring resonators. High-sensitivity sensors based on cascaded double-ring resonators and a Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI) cascaded with a microring resonator employing Vernier effect have recently been proposed and experimentally demonstrated. Simple and low-cost intensity interrogation can be employed without using a high resolution spectrometer or a narrow line-width tunable laser. Label-free detection capability of these two types of SOI sensors have also been demonstrated. This talk reviews our work on the design, fabrication and measurement of SOI nanowire based high-sensitivity biosensors employing Vernier effect. Biosensing experiments using cascaded double-ring sensor and Mach-Zehnder-ring sensor integrated with microfluidic channels are also presented.

Abstract:A highly sensitive optical waveguide sensor based on simple intensity interrogation with a broadband light source is proposed and investigated. It consists of two cascaded microring resonators with the same or slightly different free spectral ranges. The variation of the refractive index of the analyte sample results in a large shift in the envelope function of the transmission peaks of the sensor, and, consequently, a large change in the transmitted power. The low-cost sensing scheme can achieve an ultrahigh sensitivity of 2 x 10(4) dB/RIU. Experimental results on the intensity interrogated double-ring sensor using a broadband source are presented, demonstrating its operation principle and potential for low-cost practical applications. Abstract:A method to improve the sensitivity and selectivity of a monolithically integrated mid-infrared sensor using a distributed feedback laser (DFB) is presented in this paper. The sensor is based on a quantum cascade laser/detector system built from the same epitaxial structure and with the same fabrication approach. The devices are connected via a dielectric-loaded surface plasmon polariton waveguide with a twofold function: it provides high light coupling efficiency and a strong interaction of the light with the environment (e.g., a surrounding fluid). The weakly coupled DFB quantum cascade laser emits narrow mode light with a FWHM of 2 cm−1 at 1586 cm−1. The room temperature laser threshold current density is 3 kA∕cm2 and a pulsed output power of around 200 mW was measured. With the superior laser noise performance, due to narrow mode emission and the compensation of thermal fluctuations, the lower limit of detection was expanded by one order of magnitude to the 10 ppm range.

Abstract:Microcavity lasers show excellent performance as a miniaturized microsensor in various applications. However, their relatively weak power may be easily submerged in system noises and disturbed by environmental fluctuations, rendering them ineffective at detecting small signals for precise sensing. To solve this problem, the laser differential frequency-shift feedback technique is demonstrated in a microtubule Raman laser to achieve the optical gain assistance. When the microlaser is frequency-shift-modulated and returns back to the resonator, the measurement signal can resonate with the laser relaxation oscillation and be significantly enhanced. The intracavity dynamics-based enhancement makes it effective for increasing intensity changes caused by analytes. Small signals that would otherwise be buried in system noises and go undetected can be more easily resolved. In addition, the microsensor reduces the spectral measurement range and offers a way to observe the fast dynamic response. Based on that, a measurement resolution of 50 nm nanoparticle detection limit and a refractive index noise-limited resolution of 8.18 × 10−7 refractive index unit (RIU) are demonstrated. The dynamic phase transition of thermosensitive hydrogel is further investigated as a validation of its rapid detection capability. Integrated with an inherent microfluidic channel, the proposed microsensor provides a direct interaction between analytes and probe light with ultrasmall sample consumption down to 50 pl. It is expected to boost the detection of weak signals in microlasers and enlighten the development of optofluidic microsensors in exploring diverse biochemical processes.

Abstract:High-sensitivity optical sensors based on the cascaded reflective MZIs and the microring resonators are investigated theoretically and experimentally. The free spectral ranges of the microring and the reflective MZI are designed to be similar in order to produce Vernier effect. A high sensitivity of 1892dB/RIU of the optical sensor was achieved for the intensity interrogation. The measurement average power shows 13 dB increment comparing to that of the traditional two cascaded microring resonators. It’s meaningful for the realization of the low-cost portable systems and application in biochemical sensing.

Abstract:A Refractive index sensor based on tilted fiber Bragg grating and stimulated Brillouin scattering is proposed and demonstrated. The cladding modes of the tilted fiber Bragg grating is sensitive to the surrounding refractive index and the approach relies on refractive index dependent resonance wavelength shift of the modes. Stimulated Brillouin scattering is introduced to measure the wavelength shift due to its narrow bandwidth, which enhances the wavelength resolution to 0.25 pm and provides much higher refractive index sensitivity than traditional wavelength readout methods. This kind sensor is suitable to sense a very small variation of refractive index and the sensitivities can reach to a resolution of 1.27 × 10(-4) RIU with the refractive index ranging from 1.3405 to 1.4025 and a resolution of 2.49 × 10(-5) RIU ranging from 1.4025 to 1.4219, respectively.

Abstract:Silicon photonic sensors have formed a favorable platform for various sensing applications due to the great advantages of high-performance, compactness, and large-scale integration capability. However, interrogation systems for reading out the encoded sensing information from an integrated sensor are still bulky and inflexible for various portable applications. In this paper, we propose a monolithic silicon refractive index sensor and interrogator by utilizing the cascaded microring resonators. A novel dithering and bias scan interrogation technique is designed for highly sensitive refractive index sensing with a broadband light source. The reflective index for aqueous solutions of ethanol with different concentrations are measured in the experiment, verifying that the sensitivity of the sensor is 125.1 nm/RIU and the detection accuracy of the whole system is 7.76 $\boldsymbol{\times 10^{-6}}$ RIU. This integrated photonic sensor and interrogator will be a promising solution for large-scale applications in biological and chemical sensing scenarios.

Abstract:A novel miniature fiber-optic Fabry-Perot (F-P) refractive-index (RI) sensor machined by 157 nm laser is proposed. The sensor head consists of a micro air F-P cavity near the tip of a single-mode fiber with a micro channel on the fiber tip used as both inlet and outlet for medium under test. Thin films are coated at reflective interfaces of the F-P cavity as mirrors to ensure high optical contrast, respectively. A RI resolution of 1130.887 nm/RI unit (RIU) is achieved by experiment. Such a sensor has a number of outstanding advantages when compared with other fiber-optic RI sensors, such as very small, rigid, high resolution, excellent linearity, wide measurement range, et al.

Abstract:Aiming for high-sensitivity refractive index biosensing, we investigate Fano resonance in a one-dimensional photonic crystal cavity-coupled microring resonator (PCMRR) on a silicon chip. Calculated results show that utilizing the asymmetric line shape of the Fano resonance, the detection limit can be reduced by a factor of 5 and the intensity detection sensitivity of PCMRR can be increased by a factor of 5 compared with a regular silicon-on-insulator, reaching the values of ~7.2 × 10-4 RIU and ~1.76 × 104 dB/RIU, respectively. Owing to its simplicity, compact footprint, and excellent performances, our device would be a promising candidate for optical label-free sensing applications.

Abstract:Optical waveguide biosensors based on silicon-on-insulator (SOI) have been extensively investigated owing to its various advantages and many potential applications. In this article, we demonstrate a novel highly sensitive biosensor based on cascaded Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI) and ring resonator with the Vernier effect using wavelength interrogation. The experimental results show that the sensitivity reached 1,960 nm/RIU and 19,100 nm/RIU for sensors based on MZI alone and cascaded MZI-ring with Vernier effect, respectively. A biosensing application was also demonstrated by monitoring the interaction between goat and antigoat immunoglobulin G (IgG) pairs. This integrated high sensitivity biosensor has great potential for medical diagnostic applications.
