Abstract:Photonic switches have attractive application prospects in optical communication data networks that require dynamic reconfiguration. Integrating optical switching devices with optical fiber, the most widely deployed photonic technology platform, can realize signal transmission and processing in practical applications. Here, we demonstrate the multilevel optical switching using the phase-change material Ge2Sb2Te5 (GST) integrated on a graded-index multimode fiber. This switching process works by exploiting the significant difference in extinction coefficient between the crystalline state and the amorphous state of the GST. Using GST to achieve the switch function, no external energy source is needed to maintain the existing state of the switch, and the device is nonvolatile. This multi-level optical switch is an all-fiber integrated device. We apply GST to the end facets of the graded-index multimode fiber by magnetron sputtering, which is a reflective structure. A pulsing scheme is used to control the optical propagation state of the optical modulation signal to realize the switching function. It can store up to 11 non-volatile reliable and repeatable levels encoded by the pump source laser with a wavelength of 1550 nm. At the same time, the switching process between states is on the order of hundreds of nanoseconds. The present experimental results demonstrate the feasibility of 11 multilevel states in the field of optical fibers commonly used in communications. It can be well coupled with the all-fiber terminal device. It also shows that the device is still applicable in the 1525 nm∼1610 nm broadband range, promising for designing future multilevel photonic switches and memory devices.

Abstract:The all-optical switch (AOS) is a key device for future all-optical communication and all-optical computing.There are many types of AOSs that have been investigated;one of them is the fiber-grating AOS,which is easily matched with fiber systems.We first describe two kinds of ordinary silica single fiber-grating AOSs based on the fiber Bragg grating (FBG) and the long-period fiber grating (LPFG),respectively.Both of these require kilowatt switching powers,so they cannot be used in practice.Secondly, we introduce two kinds of highly nonlinear fiber-grating AOSs,one based on a single nonlinear FBG and the other a pair of linear LPFGs connected by a nonlinear fiber.The nonlinear fibers that we use are rare-earth doped silica fibers.Both of the nonlinear fiber-grating AOSs have low milliwatt-level switching powers,and thus may be used in applications.

Abstract:We demonstrate a nonvolatile multilevel optical switch used by GST integrated on a graded-index multimode fiber. This optical switch works by the crystalline state and the amorphous state of the GST. The present experimental results demonstrate the feasibility of 11 multilevel states in the field of optical fibers commonly used in communications.

Abstract:A new M–Z interferometer all-optical switch (AOS) consisting of a single nonlinear fiber and a linear long-period fiber grating (LPFG) pair is investigated. The switching principle is based on shifting the transmission spectrum over half of the subspectrum width by the pump light. In this paper, two types of such devices are simulated. The first one concerns use of the usual silica fiber based on the Kerr effect, the switching power of which is 471 W, consisting of the experimental result3; the second one concerns the use of an erbium-doped fiber (EDF) based on the resonant nonlinearity, the switching power of which is reduced by less than 25 mW. The transmissions of the AOS in the EDF-LPFG pair for different parameters of LPFG are also discussed.

Abstract:We report an all-optical switch based on two-pump four-wave mixing in fibers. The switched signal is not shifted in frequency in this scheme. For different signal wavelengths, the pump wavelengths and powers can be optimized to achieve the best performance. The principle of how to design the switch is discussed in detail. A high extinction ratio of -60 dB is obtained when the pump parameters are optimized by a genetic algorithm that exhibits good convergence property and high computing efficiency. The effect of zero-dispersion wavelength fluctuations along the fiber on the switch is analyzed.

Abstract:We report a low-cost non-silicon-based fiber optic switch featuring a novel design of reflection cell, which is capable of ±5V pulse operation and self-latching. The switch prototypes were measured to have a switch time of 2.6ms, return loss of −54dB and a low insertion loss. Enabling technology is precision electrical discharge machining. The dynamic process of switching was analyzed using an FEA software ANSYS for design optimization. A reasonable agreement was obtained between the measurement and calculated results. The switch is scalable to 8×8 or above and allows the realization of high capacity cross-connects.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose a new design of all fiber optical switches by using a high finesse ring resonator (RR) side coupled Mach-Zehnder interferometer. We will show that by compensating the total loss in the RR the switching power can be decreased greatly and by loss, compensating the bistability effect in RR can be cancelled and the switching performance can be improved. In addition, we will show that by using Erbium doped fiber for fabricating the RR we can obtain switching power threshold in mW range.

Abstract:All-optical switching in long-period fiber grating (LPFG) with Ge-As-Se chalcogenide fibers was proposed. The switching performances at different resonant wavelengths and cladding modes were systematically investigated using coupled-mode theory. By utilizing the ultra-high nonlinearity of chalcogenide glass, the switching power threshold of the proposed LPFG switching at 1.55 μm was 105 MW/cm2 with power coupling for the low-order LP09 cladding mode, which was approximately 200 times lower than that of silica LPFG. Furthermore, the temperature stability of the proposed LPFG switching was examined. The optical switching instability due to the laser thermal effect can be well suppressed by optimizing the cladding radius and grating period. Considering the balance between temperature sensitivity and switching power threshold, an all-optical switch with temperature sensitivity of 51 pm/°C was finally realized by selecting the LP051 mode with a cladding radius of 39 μm.

Abstract:This paper reports the design, fabrication, and testing of a Micro-opto-mechanical grating switch driven by electrostatic actuator for fiber-optic communication applications. It consists of two bounded silicon wafers. One input fiber with a hemispherical lens at its end and three photodetectors are mounted on the upper wafer. A movable platform with two gratings and one mirror are fabricated on the lower wafer. When the movable platform is at a certain position, the input beam can be split into three beams by the gratings. The reflectivity of the mirror is about 85% while the efficiency in the three different order is 29%, 26%, and 26%. The switching speed is about 500 μs. Details of the grating switching design, theoretical analysis, fabrication and experimental results are presented in this paper.

Abstract:We propose a novel 2×2 wavelength-convertible optical switch based on dual-pump fiber parametric devices: one is driven by linearly parallel pumps, and the other one by perpendicular pumps. Theoretical analysis is made on the polarization effects on the switching performance of the two devices. The result predicts that two incident signals which are positioned symmetrically with respect to one pump can be switched independently, with judicious combinations of the relative pump-signal polarization states. Simulations performed in OptiSystem show that the scheme can achieve crosstalk-free packet switching with acceptable extinction ratios for both signals. Besides, future applications of this novel scheme in high-speed switching nodes are discussed.

Abstract:We propose a novel Sagnac interferometer (SI) optical switch consisting of a pumped erbium-doped fiber 3dB coupler for a signal at 1.55 mu m and a short fiber loop. The switching between the reflected and transmitted output powers can be accomplished by two approaches: using 980nm-pump power in the cross-pumping mode or using an additional signal power in the self-pumping mode. In the two modes, the switching powers are 40mW and 20mW, and the switching times are sub-nanoseconds and milliseconds, respectively. In the both cases, the switching powers are independent of the fiber-loop length, so that the power-length products for proposed SI switch can be smaller than that of other kind of nonlinear SI switches.

Abstract:We report the experimental observation of optical bistable switching in a combined distributed-feedback/Fabry–Perot structure. The sample had a high switching contrast with almost zero reflectivity in the on-state. A turnoff time as short as 4 ns was measured. The threshold power for bistability was about 2 mW. Bistable switching with the memory effect and a potential application for all-optical signal regeneration were demonstrated.

Abstract:In this paper, a non-volatile polarization-insensitive 1×2 silicon optical switch utilizing phase-change materials is presented. The presented device is composed of three polarization beam combiners/splitters, two directional couplers with phase change materials, and a polarization-insensitive waveguide crossing. By adjusting the phase state of phase-change material, polarization-insensitive switching behavior is realized. As an example, the proposed switch using Ge2Sb2Te5 is comprehensively optimized and analyzed based on particle swarm optimization algorithm and finite difference time domain method. The designed device can have a crosstalk of less than −15.98 dB and an insertion loss of smaller than 0.95 dB over the C-band in the case of TE polarization, while a maximum crosstalk of −13.53 dB and a maximum insertion loss of 1.37 dB can be obtained within the C-band in the case of TM polarization.

Abstract:An all-optical 2 x 2 cross/bar switch is demonstrated exploiting nonlinear polarization rotation in a single semiconductor optical amplifier. The proposed architecture allows operation with packets at the same input wavelengths and does not require high-speed clock control pump signals. Bit-error-rate measurements at the switch output ports for both cross/bar configurations and for both cases of one and two packet signals connected to the input ports are performed. A maximum of 2.3 dB of power penalty was observed in the worst case. The switching energy was as low as about 400 fJ per bit at 10 Gb/s.

Abstract:We report a fiber optic switch based on a novel MEMS technology allowing fast switch (<2 ms), excellent isolation (>50dB) and wide bandwidth. Each switch module consists of an electromagnetically actuated gold-coated silicon mirror rotating around a 100 mum diameter shaft and a miniature 5V driven coil. Enabling technology is precision EDM machining and laser cutting. The switch is scalable to 8 X 8 and allows the realization of high capacity cross-connects.

Abstract:Photonic crystals, materials with periodic dielectric structures, are able to control the propagation states of photons owing to the so-called photonic-bandgap effect1. Nonlinear photonic crystals, whose refractive-index distribution can be tuned optically, have been used to demonstrate all-optical switching2. However, a high pump intensity is usually required because the nonlinear optical coefficient of conventional materials is relatively small3. Here we report ultrafast and low-power photonic-crystal all-optical switching based on strong optical nonlinearity enhancement due to excited-state interelectron transfer. Compared with the case without nonlinearity enhancement, the switching operation power is reduced by four orders of magnitude while the ultrafast response time, of the order of a picosecond, is maintained. This provides a strategy for constructing photonic materials with large nonlinearity and studying ultrafast low-power integrated photonic devices.

Abstract:A novel all-optical switch based on nonlinear polarization mechanism using polarization-maintaining fiber ring with a polarization rotator is proposed. Optical switching with low threshold of mW order and optical limiting with broader limiting range, less fluctuation, higher damage threshold and response speed are demonstrated numerically. The deterioration of switching and the improvement of limiting originating from losses are also studied. Considering the tradeoff between switching power and bandwidth, the way to increase bandwidth is discussed.
