Abstract:One of the major challenges in realizing practical all-optical switching devices is the need for strong and fast material nonlinearity. The use of resonance-enhanced nonlinear effects in optical cavities has been explored as a promising way to lower the switching power. This paper provides numerically investigation of resonator-enhanced Mach-Zehnder interferometer all-optical switch by employing a nonlinear ratio-variable coupler with the merits of easy fabrication and excellent nonlinear optical controllability. This performs nonlinear optical switching with advantages of hundreds mu W low switching threshold, steady switch ON/OFF states and a wide wavelength range by combining the high nonlinearity of ring and adjustable coupling ratio of RVC. Resonator finesse is controllable by incident power with potential applications in controllable photonic devices. Some undesirable effects involving attenuation, group delay and partial coherence lead to increase of switching power and low extinction ratio. Optical bistability and instability do not limit practical applications in optical switch. A desired tradeoff between response time and switching power can be achieved by controlling finesse. Picosecond ultrafast all-optical switch is predicted.

Abstract:A new M–Z interferometer all-optical switch (AOS) consisting of a single nonlinear fiber and a linear long-period fiber grating (LPFG) pair is investigated. The switching principle is based on shifting the transmission spectrum over half of the subspectrum width by the pump light. In this paper, two types of such devices are simulated. The first one concerns use of the usual silica fiber based on the Kerr effect, the switching power of which is 471 W, consisting of the experimental result3; the second one concerns the use of an erbium-doped fiber (EDF) based on the resonant nonlinearity, the switching power of which is reduced by less than 25 mW. The transmissions of the AOS in the EDF-LPFG pair for different parameters of LPFG are also discussed.

Abstract:We propose a novel configuration of all-optical switch based on a double-loop Sagnac ring coupled with a nonlinear ring resonator. In the case of self-phase modulation, the reducing switching threshold power down to mW is predicted, which is the improvement of earlier works on all-optical switches. The switch optimization is analysed. A way to increase the response speed of all-optical switches is suggested.

Abstract:We propose a novel Sagnac interferometer (SI) optical switch consisting of a pumped erbium-doped fiber 3dB coupler for a signal at 1.55 mu m and a short fiber loop. The switching between the reflected and transmitted output powers can be accomplished by two approaches: using 980nm-pump power in the cross-pumping mode or using an additional signal power in the self-pumping mode. In the two modes, the switching powers are 40mW and 20mW, and the switching times are sub-nanoseconds and milliseconds, respectively. In the both cases, the switching powers are independent of the fiber-loop length, so that the power-length products for proposed SI switch can be smaller than that of other kind of nonlinear SI switches.

Abstract:A novel configuration of all-optical switch in Mach-Zehnder interferometer with two-arm-sharing nonlinear ring resonator is proposed. Self- and pump-controlled switching are investigated numerically. The simulation results show the reduction of switching threshold down to 0.1mW and 4mW correspondingly and the high stability on the switch on/off states. The feasibility of ps-order ultrafast all-optical switching is also discussed.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose a new design of all fiber optical switches by using a high finesse ring resonator (RR) side coupled Mach-Zehnder interferometer. We will show that by compensating the total loss in the RR the switching power can be decreased greatly and by loss, compensating the bistability effect in RR can be cancelled and the switching performance can be improved. In addition, we will show that by using Erbium doped fiber for fabricating the RR we can obtain switching power threshold in mW range.

Abstract:We propose an all-optical switch of the Mach–Zehnder interferometer type using an active nonlinear ring resonator and analyse the significance of the parameter A, a product of gain and total loss, for performing an ideal 1 by 2 switch. We found that in the range of 1−κ⩽A⩽(1−κ)1/2, the increment of A can compensate the losses inside the ring, therefore increase the finesse of the ring and enhance the nonlinearity contribution to reduce the switching power threshold effectively. We also emphasize the importance of the initial switching point and discuss the feasibility of utilizing a high-nonlinear fibre in the ring.

Abstract:We propose a new all-optical switch for 1.55-mum signal by using an erbium-doped fiber (EDF) ring resonator coupled to one arm of Mach-Zehnder interferometer. Because of the high nonlinearity of EDF and compensating losses in the ring by the gain of EDF amplifier, the switching power-length product is reduced to the order of 10(-4) Wm. When we design the device with the ring length of 0.3 m, and adjust the 980-nm pump power from 14 to 19 mW, the gain changes from 3 to 4 dB,. and then the switching power and switching time can be changed from 6 to 11 mW and 22 to 16 ns, respectively.

However, the losses inside the ring and the coupler strongly affect the characteristics of switches. We suggest inserting a gain-controllable optical amplifier SOA into the ring to compensate all of the losses in the ring resonator as shown in Fig. 1.

Abstract:A kind of Mach-Zehnder optical switch with a dual-bus coupled ring resonator as a two-beam interferometer is proposed and investigated. The analysis based on the transfer matrix method shows that a sharp asymmetric Fano line shape can be generated in the transmission spectra of such a configuration, which can be used to significantly reduce the phase change required for switching. Meanwhile, it can also be found that complete extinctions can be achieved in both switching states if the structural parameters are carefully chosen and the phase bias is properly set. Through tuning the phase difference between the arms of the Mach-Zehnder interferometer, complete extinction can be easily kept within a large range of the ring-bus coupling ratios in the OFF state. By properly modulating the phase change in the ring waveguide, the shift of the resonant frequency and the asymmetry of the transmission spectra can be controlled to finally enable optical switching with a high extinction ratio, even complete extinction, in the ON state. The switching functionality is verified by the finite-difference time-domain simulation.

Abstract:This paper presents a novel micro-ring-resonator-assisted structure as an optical switch. This device couples two outputs of a 1x2 power splitter into a micro-ring resonator (MRR). The double-beam interference will occur in the MRR. If the phase difference between the beams and the coupling coefficients of MRR are set properly, the device can switch the light by applying phase shift on MRR. High extinction ratio or low crosstalk can be achieved, even if the modulation additional loss is large.

Abstract:We perform optimization of all-optical EDFA-based Sagnac - interferometer switch through an analytical model and numerical simulations by solving nonlinear Schrödinger equations. The effects of the performance of EDFA on the bit rate and the switching power are investigated for all-optical switch based on self-phase or cross-phase modulation. The simulated results show that ultra-low switching power (<1mW) all-optical switch for 40 Gb/s data can be realized by properly selecting the length of highly nonlinear photonic crystal fiber and adjusting the performance of EDFA.

Abstract:An optically activated optical switch based on suppression of mode interference (SMI) is presented. The imaging properties of multi-mode interference (MMI) section in the switch with Y-branch can be modified by a controlling light injection. The switch was simulated by finite difference beam propagation method (FD-BPM) and fabricated on GaAlAs/GaAs epitaxial materials. At the wavelength of 1.31 um, the primary experiment showed an extinction ratio of about 8 dB with controlling light power density of 73.5 W/mm2.

Abstract:A novel all-optical switch based on nonlinear polarization mechanism using polarization-maintaining fiber ring with a polarization rotator is proposed. Optical switching with low threshold of mW order and optical limiting with broader limiting range, less fluctuation, higher damage threshold and response speed are demonstrated numerically. The deterioration of switching and the improvement of limiting originating from losses are also studied. Considering the tradeoff between switching power and bandwidth, the way to increase bandwidth is discussed.

Abstract:We propose and experimentally demonstrate a low-power 2×2 silicon electro-optic (EO) switch consisting of a double-ring assisted Mach-Zehnder interferometer (DR-MZI). Active tuning elements based on p-i-n diodes and silicon resistive micro-heaters are embedded in the microrings for high-speed EO switching and low-loss thermo-optic (TO) tuning, respectively. The transmission spectrum shows the device can perform switching in a 60 GHz spectral window with a crosstalk less than -20 dB. After phase error correction with 2.31 mW TO power, the EO switch power from cross to bar states is only 0.69 mW. The rise and fall times of the switch are 405 and 414 ps, respectively. The switch operation of the device is verified by high-throughput optical signal transmission up to 25 Gbps.

Abstract:We designed a novel and low switching-power all-optical fiber switch. The highly nonlinear photonic crystal fiber and the bi-directional pumped Er-doped fiber amplifier are inserted into the Sagnac loop mirror simultaneously. The switching is realized based on cross-phase modulation because the symmetry of the loop is broken. The theoretical analysis shows that the switching-power is inverse proportional to the product of the amplifier gain and the nonlinear coefficient of the photonic crystal fiber. In our experiment, 40 mW switching-power and 15.9 dB switching-extinction are obtained; furthermore, the transmission of signal light is a cosine function of the peak power of the control pulse. All the results of experiment well agree with the theory.
