Abstract:Photonic crystals, materials with periodic dielectric structures, are able to control the propagation states of photons owing to the so-called photonic-bandgap effect1. Nonlinear photonic crystals, whose refractive-index distribution can be tuned optically, have been used to demonstrate all-optical switching2. However, a high pump intensity is usually required because the nonlinear optical coefficient of conventional materials is relatively small3. Here we report ultrafast and low-power photonic-crystal all-optical switching based on strong optical nonlinearity enhancement due to excited-state interelectron transfer. Compared with the case without nonlinearity enhancement, the switching operation power is reduced by four orders of magnitude while the ultrafast response time, of the order of a picosecond, is maintained. This provides a strategy for constructing photonic materials with large nonlinearity and studying ultrafast low-power integrated photonic devices.

Abstract:We theoretically investigate and discuss the response time, switching contrast, and pump power of all-optical switching in a nonlinear photonic crystal structure with high quality factor (high-Q) cavity. For the response time of all-optical switching, the drop and rise time are considered, respectively. Moreover, we find that when the duration of pump pulse is shorter than the lifetime, the response curve of all-optical switching is asymmetric, and the drop time is determined by both the lifetime of high-Q cavity and duration of pump pulse, and the rise time is mainly determined by lifetime of high-Q cavity. In contrast, when the duration of pump pulse is much longer than the lifetime, the dynamic response curve is symmetric, and both the drop and rise time are determined by the duration of pump pulse. On the other hand, the pump power can be significantly reduced by using a setup where the probe beam is located at the high-Q cavity mode with very narrow linewidth. Furthermore, if the central wavelength of pump pulse is also set to match with this or another high-Q cavity mode, the pump power will be reduced further due to the large field enhancement within the photonic crystal, and more importantly there is no extra prolonged response time of all-optical switching. By this method, the pump power as low as 210 KW/cm2 is observed in our model structure with the quality factor of only 32 096 for the ordinary polystyrene material.

Abstract:An all-optical switching with an ultrafast response time of femtosecond order is demonstrated in a two-dimensional polystyrene photonic crystal excited by a 9.7 MW/cm2 pump laser. High switching efficiency of about 70 % is achieved.

Abstract:An all-optical switching with high switch efficiency is realized based on two-dimensional nonlinear photonic crystal made of polystyrene. The prism-film coupling method is used to couple energy of probe light into photonic crystal waveguide. High transmittance contrast of more than 60% is realized for the probe light. Time response of the optical switching is around l0 ps. The dynamical shifts of photonic gap induced by pump light are measured and analyzed in detail. The photonic gap shifts l0 nm under the excitation of 16.7GW∕cm2 pump intensity, which is in agreement with the theoretical predictions.

Abstract:Photonic crystal all-optical switching is realized in two-dimensional nonlinear photonic crystals made of poly[2-methoxy-5-(2-ethylhexyloxy)-1,4-phenylenevinylene]. Organic polymer films are fabricated by a slow evaporation method. Under resonant excitation, the organic matrix provides very large third-order nonlinear optical susceptibility. An operating pump energy as low as 514 pJ/cm 2 and a high switching efficiency of 70% are achieved for the photonic crystal optical switching. A switching time of 45.6 ps is maintained due to fast Forster transfer of excitons.

Abstract:We designed a novel and low switching-power all-optical fiber switch. The highly nonlinear photonic crystal fiber and the bi-directional pumped Er-doped fiber amplifier are inserted into the Sagnac loop mirror simultaneously. The switching is realized based on cross-phase modulation because the symmetry of the loop is broken. The theoretical analysis shows that the switching-power is inverse proportional to the product of the amplifier gain and the nonlinear coefficient of the photonic crystal fiber. In our experiment, 40 mW switching-power and 15.9 dB switching-extinction are obtained; furthermore, the transmission of signal light is a cosine function of the peak power of the control pulse. All the results of experiment well agree with the theory.

Abstract:We report a picosecond and low-power all-optical switch with multiple operating wavelengths in integrated photonic circuits, on-chip-triggered by a control light. The sample configuration combines the advantages of plasmonics and photonics, i.e. plasmonic nanostructures used as core units interconnected by ultralow-loss dielectric slot waveguides. A large nonlinearity enhancement is obtained based on resonant excitation, local field effect, and field enhancement effect, while fast response is maintained by intermolecular energy transfer. A fast response of 63 ps and ultralow control light intensity of 450 kW/cm(2) are achieved.

Abstract:An ultrafast all-optical switching is demonstrated in an organic three-dimensional nonlinear photonic crystal with a response time as short as 120 fs. The operating wavelength of the optical switching is in the visible spectrum. The switching function is realized by a shift of the photonic band gap under optical pumping. It is found that the photonic band gap shifts about 10 nm with the excitation of 27.5GW∕cm2 pump laser.

Abstract:An all-optical switching with an operating pump intensity of 1 MW cm−2 is realized in a one-dimensional nonlinear organic photonic crystal made of poly(3-hexylthiophene) doped with 1-(3-methoxycarbonyl)propyl-1-phenyl-(6,6)C61, fabricated by focused ion-beam etching. The femtosecond pump and probe method is adopted to measure the transmittance changes of the probe laser based on the photonic bandgap shift induced by the pump laser. Under resonant excitation, a large nonlinear refractive index of the order of 10−9 cm2 W−1 is obtained for the polymer composite. A switching time of 58.9 ps is maintained due to intermolecular charge transfer and exciton–exciton annihilation.

Abstract:A low-power all-optical switching is presented based on the all-optical tunable Fano-like resonance in a two-dimensional nonlinear ferroelectric photonic crystal made of polycrystalline lithium niobate. An asymmetric Fano-like line shape is achieved in the transmission spectrum by using two cascaded and uncoupled photonic crystal microcavities. The physical mechanism underlying the all-optical switching is attributed to the dynamic shift of the Fano-like resonance peak caused by variations in the dispersion relations of the photonic crystal structure induced by pump light. A large switching efficiency of 61% is reached under excitation of a weak pump light with an intensity as low as 1 MW cm(-2).

Abstract:We report a low-power all-optical switching in a two-dimensional nanocomposite photonic crystal microcavity made of poly[2-methoxy-5-(2-ethylhexyloxy)-1,4-phenylenevinylene] doped with gold nanoparticles, realized based on surface plasmon resonance enhancing nonlinearity and dynamically tunable coupling of two asymmetric defect modes. Under excitation around the surface plasmon resonance peak, the value of the nonlinear susceptibility of the nanocomposite material reaches the order of 10−6 esu. A threshold photon energy as low as 700 fJ and an ultrahigh switching efficiency of 90% are realized simultaneously.

Abstract:An ultrafast all-optical switching with the response time on the order of 10 fs is demonstrated in a three-dimensional opal polystyrene nonlinear photonic crystal by means of precise femtosecond pump-probe technique. The switching is realized by the shift in the photonic band gap under external optical pumping of 8 fs Ti:sapphire pulse laser with a peak pump power of 20.6 GW/cm2. The good performance of optical switching is attributed to the very strong and fast Kerr nonlinear optical response of the polystyrene material.

Abstract:All-optical switching with ultrafast time response of 20 fs is realized in a two-dimensional polystyrene photonic crystal. The high switching contrast of more than 45% is achieved. The pump and probe method is used to study the dynamical shift of the photonic band gap based on the nonlinear optical Kerr effect. It is found that the maximum shift of short wavelength band edge is about 6 nm under excitation of 13 GW/cm pump light.

Abstract:Liquid crystals are widely used in photonics because of their profound electro-optic properties. However, the slow switching speeds (milliseconds) and the fluid nature of liquid crystals restrict their potential use in integrated photonics. In this work, polymer-stabilized liquid crystals are utilized as the functional material to improve the response time with a polymer network that helps pre-orientate the liquid crystal. Additionally, plasmonic slot structures are simultaneously employed to minimize the switch voltage by confining the optical field within the electrode spacing at subwavelength scales. Thanks to the large overlap of the optical and electric fields, the scattering states of the polymer-stabilized liquid crystal can be effectively manipulated to modulate the loss of the propagating wave, resulting in strong optical attenuation in the integrated photonic platform. Specifically, a plasmonic enhanced polymer-stabilized liquid crystal photonic device for operation at 1550 nm, which has a length of only 10 mu m and shows an extinction ratio of 0.38 dB mu m-1, with a power consumption of less than 6 mu W and a response time approximate to 20 mu s, resulting in a figure-of-merit of 0.012 mW. A scheme of on-chip integrated optical attenuators for plasmonic slot waveguide-enhanced electro-optical properties of polymer-stabilized liquid crystal film is proposed. This prototype reduces the response time and improves the modulation efficiency of the liquid crystal-based integrated photonic device, resulting in a compact and energy-efficient platform for on-chip optical modulation. image

Abstract:We report a new all-optical switching in a two-dimensional photonic crystal microcavity made of semiconductor multiple quantum wells and realized based on the electromagnetically induced transparency effect with exciton and two-exciton energy levels. We use the quantum coherence effects to achieve small absorption of the probe field, and the absorption of the probe field can be adjusted by controlling the pump field and decay rate. We turn the control field into pulses of light field so that we can regulate the efficiency of the switch. Through selecting the appropriate control light field intensity, we can obtain a switching efficiency of 85% and a switching time is 10 ps. This result can be used for the development of new types of nanoelectronic devices for realizing the switching process.

Abstract:On-chip-triggered all-optical switching is a key component of ultrahigh-speed and ultrawide-band information processing chips. This switching technique, the operating states of which are triggered by a remote control light, paves the way for the realization of cascaded and complicated logic processing circuits and quantum solid chips. Here, a strategy is reported to realize on-chip remotely-triggered, ultralow-power, ultrafast, and nanoscale all-optical switching with high switching efficiency in integrated photonic circuits. It is based on control-light induced dynamic modulation of the coupling properties of two remotely-coupled silicon photonic crystal nanocavities, and extremely large optical nonlinearity enhancement associated with epsilon-near-zero multi-component nanocomposite achieved through dispersion engineering. Compared with previous reports of on-chip direct-triggered all-optical switching, the threshold control intensity, 560 kW/cm(2), is reduced by four orders of magnitude, while maintaining ultrafast switching time of 15 ps. This not only provides a strategy to construct photonic materials with ultrafast and large third-order nonlinearity, but also offers an on-chip platform for the fundamental study of nonlinear optics.
