Abstract:We report a nanocomposite material possessing large nonlinear optical coefficients and fast response simultaneously, which is made of poly[2-methoxy-5-(2-ethylhexyloxy)-1,4-phenylenevinylene] doped with Ag nanoparticles. Under resonant excitation of the polymer matrix and Ag nanoparticles, the value of the nonlinear susceptibility reaches the order of 10−6 esu. A nonlinear response time of 35 ps is achieved due to the energy transfer from organic molecules to Ag nanoparticles. An ultrafast photonic crystal all-optical switching with an ultralow pump intensity of 0.2 MW/cm2 is realized.

Abstract:Photonic crystal all-optical switching is realized in two-dimensional nonlinear photonic crystals made of poly[2-methoxy-5-(2-ethylhexyloxy)-1,4-phenylenevinylene]. Organic polymer films are fabricated by a slow evaporation method. Under resonant excitation, the organic matrix provides very large third-order nonlinear optical susceptibility. An operating pump energy as low as 514 pJ/cm 2 and a high switching efficiency of 70% are achieved for the photonic crystal optical switching. A switching time of 45.6 ps is maintained due to fast Forster transfer of excitons.

Abstract:We report a multi-component nanocomposite material with large and ultrafast third-order nonlinearity, made of poly(3-hexylthiophene) doped with 1-(3-methoxycarbonyl)propyl-1-phenyl-(6,6)C61 and silver nanoparticles. Large nonlinear refractive index of the order of 10−7 cm2/W is reached by combining surface plasmon resonance enhancing nonlinearity and local-field enhancing nonlinearity. An ultrafast response time of 33.6 ps is achieved due to the enhanced charge transfer and exciton-exciton annihilation associated with surface plasmon resonance. An ultrafast photonic crystal all-optical switching with an ultralow pump intensity of 70 KW/cm2 is also realized.

Abstract:Photonic crystals, materials with periodic dielectric structures, are able to control the propagation states of photons owing to the so-called photonic-bandgap effect1. Nonlinear photonic crystals, whose refractive-index distribution can be tuned optically, have been used to demonstrate all-optical switching2. However, a high pump intensity is usually required because the nonlinear optical coefficient of conventional materials is relatively small3. Here we report ultrafast and low-power photonic-crystal all-optical switching based on strong optical nonlinearity enhancement due to excited-state interelectron transfer. Compared with the case without nonlinearity enhancement, the switching operation power is reduced by four orders of magnitude while the ultrafast response time, of the order of a picosecond, is maintained. This provides a strategy for constructing photonic materials with large nonlinearity and studying ultrafast low-power integrated photonic devices.

Abstract:We report a low-power all-optical switching in a two-dimensional nanocomposite photonic crystal microcavity made of poly[2-methoxy-5-(2-ethylhexyloxy)-1,4-phenylenevinylene] doped with gold nanoparticles, realized based on surface plasmon resonance enhancing nonlinearity and dynamically tunable coupling of two asymmetric defect modes. Under excitation around the surface plasmon resonance peak, the value of the nonlinear susceptibility of the nanocomposite material reaches the order of 10−6 esu. A threshold photon energy as low as 700 fJ and an ultrahigh switching efficiency of 90% are realized simultaneously.

Abstract:On-chip-triggered all-optical switching is a key component of ultrahigh-speed and ultrawide-band information processing chips. This switching technique, the operating states of which are triggered by a remote control light, paves the way for the realization of cascaded and complicated logic processing circuits and quantum solid chips. Here, a strategy is reported to realize on-chip remotely-triggered, ultralow-power, ultrafast, and nanoscale all-optical switching with high switching efficiency in integrated photonic circuits. It is based on control-light induced dynamic modulation of the coupling properties of two remotely-coupled silicon photonic crystal nanocavities, and extremely large optical nonlinearity enhancement associated with epsilon-near-zero multi-component nanocomposite achieved through dispersion engineering. Compared with previous reports of on-chip direct-triggered all-optical switching, the threshold control intensity, 560 kW/cm(2), is reduced by four orders of magnitude, while maintaining ultrafast switching time of 15 ps. This not only provides a strategy to construct photonic materials with ultrafast and large third-order nonlinearity, but also offers an on-chip platform for the fundamental study of nonlinear optics.

Abstract:An all-optical switching with an operating pump intensity of 1 MW cm−2 is realized in a one-dimensional nonlinear organic photonic crystal made of poly(3-hexylthiophene) doped with 1-(3-methoxycarbonyl)propyl-1-phenyl-(6,6)C61, fabricated by focused ion-beam etching. The femtosecond pump and probe method is adopted to measure the transmittance changes of the probe laser based on the photonic bandgap shift induced by the pump laser. Under resonant excitation, a large nonlinear refractive index of the order of 10−9 cm2 W−1 is obtained for the polymer composite. A switching time of 58.9 ps is maintained due to intermolecular charge transfer and exciton–exciton annihilation.

Abstract:Photonic switches have attractive application prospects in optical communication data networks that require dynamic reconfiguration. Integrating optical switching devices with optical fiber, the most widely deployed photonic technology platform, can realize signal transmission and processing in practical applications. Here, we demonstrate the multilevel optical switching using the phase-change material Ge2Sb2Te5 (GST) integrated on a graded-index multimode fiber. This switching process works by exploiting the significant difference in extinction coefficient between the crystalline state and the amorphous state of the GST. Using GST to achieve the switch function, no external energy source is needed to maintain the existing state of the switch, and the device is nonvolatile. This multi-level optical switch is an all-fiber integrated device. We apply GST to the end facets of the graded-index multimode fiber by magnetron sputtering, which is a reflective structure. A pulsing scheme is used to control the optical propagation state of the optical modulation signal to realize the switching function. It can store up to 11 non-volatile reliable and repeatable levels encoded by the pump source laser with a wavelength of 1550 nm. At the same time, the switching process between states is on the order of hundreds of nanoseconds. The present experimental results demonstrate the feasibility of 11 multilevel states in the field of optical fibers commonly used in communications. It can be well coupled with the all-fiber terminal device. It also shows that the device is still applicable in the 1525 nm∼1610 nm broadband range, promising for designing future multilevel photonic switches and memory devices.

Abstract:An all-optical switching with high switch efficiency is realized based on two-dimensional nonlinear photonic crystal made of polystyrene. The prism-film coupling method is used to couple energy of probe light into photonic crystal waveguide. High transmittance contrast of more than 60% is realized for the probe light. Time response of the optical switching is around l0 ps. The dynamical shifts of photonic gap induced by pump light are measured and analyzed in detail. The photonic gap shifts l0 nm under the excitation of 16.7GW∕cm2 pump intensity, which is in agreement with the theoretical predictions.

Abstract:We report a picosecond and low-power all-optical switch with multiple operating wavelengths in integrated photonic circuits, on-chip-triggered by a control light. The sample configuration combines the advantages of plasmonics and photonics, i.e. plasmonic nanostructures used as core units interconnected by ultralow-loss dielectric slot waveguides. A large nonlinearity enhancement is obtained based on resonant excitation, local field effect, and field enhancement effect, while fast response is maintained by intermolecular energy transfer. A fast response of 63 ps and ultralow control light intensity of 450 kW/cm(2) are achieved.

Abstract:An ultrafast and ultralow-power on-chip-triggered all-optical switch is realized by X. Hu and co-workers. The device, which is described on page 1159, is based on a plasmon–photon–hybrid nanostructure-coated multicomponent nanocomposite in integrated photonic circuits. This paves a way to overcome the intrinsic material limitations for the realization of very-large-scale integrated photonic circuits and chips, and additionally provides a lab-on-chip platform for fundamental research of nonlinear optics and quantum optics.

Abstract:Liquid crystals are widely used in photonics because of their profound electro-optic properties. However, the slow switching speeds (milliseconds) and the fluid nature of liquid crystals restrict their potential use in integrated photonics. In this work, polymer-stabilized liquid crystals are utilized as the functional material to improve the response time with a polymer network that helps pre-orientate the liquid crystal. Additionally, plasmonic slot structures are simultaneously employed to minimize the switch voltage by confining the optical field within the electrode spacing at subwavelength scales. Thanks to the large overlap of the optical and electric fields, the scattering states of the polymer-stabilized liquid crystal can be effectively manipulated to modulate the loss of the propagating wave, resulting in strong optical attenuation in the integrated photonic platform. Specifically, a plasmonic enhanced polymer-stabilized liquid crystal photonic device for operation at 1550 nm, which has a length of only 10 mu m and shows an extinction ratio of 0.38 dB mu m-1, with a power consumption of less than 6 mu W and a response time approximate to 20 mu s, resulting in a figure-of-merit of 0.012 mW. A scheme of on-chip integrated optical attenuators for plasmonic slot waveguide-enhanced electro-optical properties of polymer-stabilized liquid crystal film is proposed. This prototype reduces the response time and improves the modulation efficiency of the liquid crystal-based integrated photonic device, resulting in a compact and energy-efficient platform for on-chip optical modulation. image

Abstract:An ultrafast all-optical switching is demonstrated in an organic three-dimensional nonlinear photonic crystal with a response time as short as 120 fs. The operating wavelength of the optical switching is in the visible spectrum. The switching function is realized by a shift of the photonic band gap under optical pumping. It is found that the photonic band gap shifts about 10 nm with the excitation of 27.5GW∕cm2 pump laser.

Abstract:All the optical properties of materials are derived from dielectric function. In spectral region where the dielectric permittivity approaches zero, known as epsilon‐near‐zero (ENZ) region, the propagating light within the material attains a very high phase velocity, and meanwhile the material exhibits strong optical nonlinearity. The interplay between the linear and nonlinear optical response in these materials thus offers unprecedented pathways for all‐optical control and device design. Here the authors demonstrate ultrafast all‐optical modulation based on a typical ENZ material of indium tin oxide (ITO) nanocrystals (NCs), accessed by a wet‐chemistry route. In the ENZ region, the authors find that the optical response in these ITO NCs is associated with a strong nonlinear character, exhibiting sub‐picosecond response time (corresponding to frequencies over 2 THz) and modulation depth up to ≈160%. This large optical nonlinearity benefits from the highly confined geometry in addition to the ENZ enhancement effect of the ITO NCs. Based on these ENZ NCs, the authors successfully demonstrate a fiber optical switch that allows switching of continuous laser wave into femtosecond laser pulses. Combined with facile processibility and tunable optical properties, these solution‐processed ENZ NCs may offer a scalable and printable material solution for dynamic photonic and optoelectronic devices.
